I went to Flo because I had been feeling disconnected from both my inner self and from nature. She gave me insight into some of the reasons why I felt so disconnected. I left the session having laughed, cried, and most importantly with a newfound sense of direction. It was truly a wonderful experience. Thank you Flo.” - Dy’Anna “My reading with Flora enabled me to see areas that I needed to work on with greater clarity. She was able to provide insight with a kind and generous heart, and the jewelry pieces I bought after my reading added more beauty and joy to my day! “ - Irene Chong “My friend and I did the chakra readings with Flora when I was in Singapore for the Conscious festival. It was very interesting and it actually gave us goosebumps when she said something that not many people know about my family... I would recommend you to be open minded and give it a go! Oh and her jewellery is beautiful!” - Eva Yoe “I had the most amazing healing session ever with Flora. My body felt lighter and energised instantly after the session.”- Florence Ng

EDITOR’S LETTER
2020 VISION
I
t’s been a whole year since I wrote my first editor’s letter for Liv Magazine. While it’s debatable whether I’m any wiser, I’d like to think it was a year of personal growth and positive change that I’m glad I had the chance to experience. I’m not sure I’d be able to say the same about the year before, and it makes me all the more reflective and grateful for the moments in my life where I’ve felt inspired, motivated and appreciative of what’s positive in my life. One big difference in this past year was how much I looked after myself. I’m not sure if it was my new responsibilities as editor of a health and wellness magazine, but I took our printed words to heart every month and lived a healthier life for it. I ran my first 10K, I went to my first yoga retreat, I learned how to meditate. I looked after myself and saw myself do things I never thought I would. For that reason it feels quite poignant to bring you our first cover story of 2020: self-care! The term gets bandied about a lot, often by industries trying to sell you something, but what is it actually? Find out what we discovered about that on p.22. Did last month’s holiday shopping break the bank? Don’t let that keep you from being healthy in 2020! We scoured the city for free and donation-based fitness classes, so you can get your year started off right with some walletfriendly workouts on p.30. Ever wanted to try making your own beauty products? It’s cheap, great for the environment, and surprisingly easier than you’d think! Find out how to make your own products on p.36. Whatever your resolutions may be, assuming you made any, I hope your next year (and decade) be filled with some serious clarity, kindness and peace. Here’s to getting it in 2020!
MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS Ach! Zoe Belhomme heads for the hills, the Scottish Highlands to be exact, with a trip around Skye on p.38.
Kate Springer does a resolution roundup and gives you her best pick of Asia’s wellness resorts on p.42.
Sarah Fung dives deep into the wonderful world of medicinal Chinese soups on p.12.
Sally Victoria Benson finds a new acai bowl hotspot and Michelin stars galore in Macau on p.44.
Jo Robinson checks her self, with an up-close and personal look at the selfcare phenomenon on p.22.

CHEAT DAY

WALK LIKE A CRUSTACEAN Roll up your sleeves: the Island Shangri-La’s Lobster Bar is kicking off the New Year by launching a Louisiana-style Lobster Boil Sunday Brunch. What is a lobster boil, we hear you ask? A Cajun tradition, it’s an informal meal where heaps of shellfish and sides are placed on sheets of paper, and everyone gets stuck in, eating with their fingers until only the shells remain. It’s a ton of fun, particularly when you factor in the Cajun live band that provides the soundtrack to your afternoon and the Bloody Marys mixed tableside. Think Boston lobster, blue mussels, clams and prawns, served with spiced butter sauce, fries, garlic bread and salad, all washed down with free-flow Veuve Cliquot and Young Master Ales. Save room for dessert: every guest gets to pick a decadent ice cream sundae to finish with. The brunch goes from noon-2:30pm for $898. TREATMENT
Dermapen at Optimal Family Health The Buzz: Hailed as a “super-facial” by celebs, micro-needling (a treatment using super-tiny needles to cause microscopic injuries and boost cell renewal) is considered one of the most effective ways to treat acne, scarring, firming, fine lines and pigmentation. Battling the latter two issues, we decided to check out Dermapen, a type of micro-needling technology, to see if we could erase sun damage acquired from years of lifeguarding and uninhibited beach-bumming. The Treatment: Knowing that Dermapen is more invasive than your average facial, we chose Optimal Family Health Clinic in Central - not only because it has a clean, sterile environment but also because our skincare therapist, Florence Fatialofa, has taken a Dermapen masterclass, which made us feel totally safe and confident. Before starting, Florence walked us through the process to ensure there were no surprises. Each Dermapen device has 16 sterilised needles which she moves across the skin to create thousands of teeny, tiny punctures. “Controlled micro-trauma to specific layers enables us to activate the production of newer, healthier cells,” explains Florence. “For example, when we cut ourselves, cells rush to that site and start to repair the skin. When that scab falls off, it reveals healthy new skin underneath.” For the next 20 minutes, she carefully runs the Dermapen device along our forehead, nose, cheeks, jawline, eye area and neck - adjusting the depth depending on the area. “It’s not simply ‘the deeper, the better,’” she adds. “I target the precise layer of skin where collagen or pigment are generated to produce results.” 16
By creating the channels through needling, Florence says she could also infuse melanin-inhibiting ingredients into the layer where pigmentation lives, thus “halting their progression to the upper layer while boosting overall rejuvenation.” If you’re wondering if it hurt... Yes, it did but it was far from unbearable in our experience. Even so, we were grateful it only lasted 20 minutes! Afterwards, Florence applied an incredible cooling mask and massaged our head, then finished with a tinted zinc lotion that concealed the redness. Our skin was red and warm - akin to sunburn - for about 24 hours, during which Florence advised us to avoid sun exposure and exercise. The Verdict: In the days and weeks following the treatment, our skin looked fuller, smoother, and noticeably more even - and we could swear our pores look smaller, too. We liked the results so much, we went back for four more treatments. Cost: $3,500 per treatment. 1903A,19/F, The Centrium, 60 Wyndham St., Central, 2666-6300, optimalfamilyhealth.com.hk

Cover Story
CHECK YOUR SELF Self-care was 2019’s biggest buzzword, but what does the term really mean? Jo Robinson goes beyond the sheet mask to get to the heart of the self-care phenomenon, and learns how to do it right.
T
hree years ago, I believed I was the epitome of self-care. I went to the gym six days a week. I prepped a week’s worth of meals on a Sunday. I made sure I was in bed at a decent hour, four or five nights each week. I cleansed, toned and moisturised morning and night, but not before I’d brushed and flossed exactly how the dentist had told me to. But just because I ate healthy, worked out and did the odd face mask, did not mean I was practising self-care. Far from it. It only took one medical scare involving my adrenal gland to realise that all my efforts at self-care were,
22
ironically, putting more stress on my body and leaving me out of touch with myself. Which leads to the question: what actually is self-care? How much of it do we need? And what can happen to us if we neglect it? “Not taking time to care for ourselves and sending the message back to our brains that everything is safe and sound can put real pressure on nearly every system of the body,” says naturopath Philip Watkins, of Hong Kong’s Integrated Medical Institute. Combined with work obligations, all our attempts at living the healthiest life possible
Cover Story
can be massively detrimental, says Graeme Bradshaw, also a naturopath and the founding director of Hong Kong’s Integrated Medical Institute. “Excessive work hours plus excessive endurance sports and other social efforts can undermine the cells in our body, our sleep, and our neurohormonal systems, as well as how we make energy,” says Bradshaw. What are we missing when it comes to self-care? Our bodies clearly need more than just a face mask, so what are our other options? Madison Ashley is a partner at Balance Potential, a workplace wellness company. She believes most people fall short by missing the big picture when they think of self-care. “Self-care is an act of investing in total wellbeing; a decision which is rooted in awareness and integrity with what an individual values and feels truly fulfilled or uplifted by.” Most experts agree that it really is as simple as that: doing the things that make you happy, content and calm. Checking in with yourself and being mindful of how you feel and what you need in any given moment. Forget the scientific reports about what herbal supplement you should be taking, or how long your intermittent fasting should be. Self-care is subjective, and the only way to know if you’re doing it right is to stop, take a breath and ask yourself if you’re happy. Self-care should bring you more peace, mental clarity and assurance, not add to your anxiety by giving you more tasks to complete. If you’d have told me three years ago that my self-care would be turning off my phone for 12 hours or eating half a jar of peanut butter on the sofa without guilt, I wouldn’t have believed you. But for me it really has become that minimal, just giving my body what it needs when it needs it. So how do you find your self-care? We’ve listed some suggestions on how to properly look after the most important thing in your world: you!

GET OUTSIDE
Wherever you are, take a break and go for a walk in nature. Japanese researcher and medical doctor Qing Li brought forest bathing to the world’s attention with his book “Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness”. Li says trees are the key to what makes us all healthier and happier - so get back to your roots, literally.
BOUNDARIES
It’s a word we hear but do we really know what boundaries are? Personal boundaries are our own personal limits we build them according to what we know we need to be protected from. Whilst they can be hard to set, start by getting to know what yours are; think of situations where you’ve felt unease, frustration, anger or hurt. These can indicate when your boundaries may have been crossed and where you need to start placing limits around what you’re willing to accept.
TREAT YOURSELF AS YOU WOULD TREAT OTHERS
Make a note of how you talk to yourself when you’re trying on that new pair of workout leggings, or after an awkward meeting with your boss. Would you say the same to a friend? Try talking to yourself the way you would to someone you love; it’s not the easiest but it’s an incredible tool to practice being wonderfully kind to yourself.
LEARN HOW TO SAY NO
It’s a beautiful word, we swear! Just remember that “no” is a complete sentence; it doesn’t need to be followed by an explanation. And ultimately, by saying no to the things that aren’t important or don’t serve us, we allow ourselves the time to say yes to the things that matter.
STOP THE “SHOULDS”
We often use this as a way of moving forwards towards our goals, but the effect of using this word too much can also conjure up feelings of regret and shame over our shortcomings. Stop with all the “shoulds” and start focusing on what you’re doing well now. 24

STOP FAKING IT
Natural never goes out of style, so just be true to yourself and get rid of anything that doesn’t feel like it serves you anymore. There is no better gift to yourself than being unapologetically you.
For me it's all about controlling the bookends of my day; morning and night are generally the only times each day that I have complete control over. Morning rituals (cold shower, joint rotation & movement, podcast, no phone until after breakfast) set me up for success for the day, and evening rituals (no electronics after 8:30pm, guitar or reading, stretching) help me to unwind and reset.
Avey Cortes, Fitness Instructor and Community Manager I try to carve at least one hour of “alone time” each day for myself. Whether that’s having a coffee or some food, exercising, reading or even watching YouTube on my phone...as long as I’m doing something for me that makes me happy and allows me to recharge, reflect and hold space for me.
Stephanie Chai, CEO of The Luxe Nomad I make it my intention to meditate daily, and make sure to practice yoga regularly. Foot massages are a great go-to for me when it comes to self-care, and I also have a couple of great energy healers in Bali who I see every 3 or 4 months as a little check-in.
MEDITATE
Love it or hate it, meditation is medically proven to quieten the sympathetic nervous system (our fight or flight response) and activate our parasympathetic (our rest response). If you’re not the sort to enjoy sitting in silence with your thoughts for 10 minutes, try a guided app or a moving meditation, like mindful walking. 26
Sarah Fung, Publisher of Liv Magazine I've recently picked up horse-riding again after a five-year break. I've made a commitment to myself every week to get up early, get out and do an intense physical activity that requires absolute focus - no phones, no distractions - for a couple of hours. It's also an opportunity to regularly get out in nature and spend time with animals, which is always good for the soul.

OPEN SKATE SESSION WITH HONG KONG ROLLER DERBY If you like the idea of roller skating but find the contact sport of roller derby terrifying, then check out the Madame Quad Monday Open Skate Session at Victoria Park. The workout is for all levels, with organisers providing music and teaching you how to skate, balance and boogie! If you don’t have your own skates and protective gear, you can rent it at the rink - which means it’s technically not free anymore, but at $150 per session it’s still a bargain by HK standards! Mondays, 8-10pm, Victoria Park Skating Rink, Tin Hau, facebook.com/madamequad.

OPEN WATER SWIMMERS OF HONG KONG If you prefer aquatic workouts but can’t stand the slow, crowded pace of public pools, you might appreciate the freedom of Hong Kong’s open water. OWSHK meets every Saturday for a weekly training session that’s attended by seasoned swimmers and open water newbies alike. Leaders teach you to familiarise yourself in the ocean, navigate and other open water strategies. Fair warning though, that this is not a free swimming class; attendees are expected to be able to swim 500 metres nonstop in a pool. HASH CLUBS Another one that isn’t technically free, but the cost is so low we might as well tell you about it while we’re here! If you don’t know what hashing is, it’s basically like running your way through a scavenger hunt. A “hare” lays out the course to follow using special symbols, which could take you through streets, hills or forests, and you complete it as quick as you can. Once you’re at your destination, all hashers drink and get merry! There are several hash clubs in Hong Kong, including Hebe Hash House Harriers which costs $30-50 for women and men to run, respectively.

THE GLOW UP News from the beauty aisle
Make Your Own BEAUTY PRODUCTS
N
atural beauty care is all the rage right now, and with good reason. It seems like every week a new study comes out linking hidden chemicals found in beauty products to health problems, animal abuse, or environmental impact. But as more big name beauty brands jump on the organic bandwagon, it’s getting to the point that even products labelled as all-natural can contain questionable ingredients. One easy way to remove that guesswork is making the goods yourself. London-based yoga instructor Ashley Ahrens made the change to DIY beauty care in 2016 after finding out too many of her favourite beauty brands were misrepresenting what was in the bottle. Easy to read up on (thanks, Google!), quick to order ingredients online and surprisingly easy to make, Ashley is now a DIY convert, making batches of different personal care products that tend to last her months, if not years, and saves hundreds of pounds every year. Here are two of her most tried and tested recipes, but Ashley warns that half the fun is playing around with it - change it up with essential oils and other tweaks to personalise it to your specific beauty needs!

HERBAL FRESH TOOTHPASTE
• Melt 1 cup coconut oil and 1 tbsp. almond oil in a double boiler on the stove. • Remove from heat once melted and add 3/4 cup baking soda and 3/4 cup kaolin clay. • Keep adding equal measures of powders to make a thin paste like texture. Since coconut oil hardens at room temperature, you may need more powders if living in a warmer climate as the toothpaste will melt. • Optional: add peppermint essential oil (or anything you prefer, anise and cinnamon are also nice) and 1 tbsp. charcoal powder (enough to make paste a black colour) • Pour in clean, dry jars and leave in the fridge to set.

DIVINE GODDESS DEODORANT
• Melt 1 tbsp. of both coconut oil and shea butter, and 1 tsp. of almond oil and cocoa butter in a double boiler on the stove. • Remove from heat once melted and add 2 tbsp. arrowroot powder, 1.5 tbsp. kaolin clay and 1 tbsp. magnesium hydroxide. • Add essential oils to your liking (rose and mixed geranium is nice), about 10-30 drops. • Stir until it’s thin enough to pour (but not so thin it’s watery) and pour into clean, dry jars. Leave in the fridge for one hour to set.

TRUE NORTH With tourism to the world’s northernmost reaches booming, it’s time to fall in love with the windswept natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands, writes Zoe Bellhomme

W
hen thinking of destinations for a relaxing getaway, the Scottish Highlands might not immediately spring to mind. But for those who love exploring nature and early nights in with a pint of real ale by an open fire, the beautifully sultry landscapes of Lochalsh on the UK Mainland and the Island of Skye have a very powerful allure. Skye is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides and is well known for its stunning scenery, as well as being a stepping stone to some of the Highland’s most remote locations. If your stay allows, and you don’t mind braving the elements, take some time on your way North to explore the picture-perfect villages and hamlets of the lesser known Lochalsh, a region that’s hard not to fall in love with.
Exploring pretty Plockton by land and sea The fishing village of Plockton on the mainland is a little pocket of prettiness, and palm trees (yes, really!) line the waterfront thanks to the famously mild climate of this sheltered enclave. The village itself is home to several traditional pubs, serving fresh locally-caught seafood caught in the area and prepared to simple perfection. After lunch, take one of the signposted walks such as the onekilometre forest amble to the imposing Duncraig Castle, or mooch around the small selection of local shops. Feeling more adventurous? Explore the turquoise seas and deserted white beaches with a kayak. The waters around Plockton are sheltered, peppered with little islands and brimming with marine life - just don’t forget to wear warm and waterproof clothing because even in the summer months it can be cold and windy.

King of the castles Driving on the mainland towards the Skye Bridge on the mainland, you’ll naturally come across a true Scottish icon. Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the Highlands but even at the height of summer it never feels overcrowded. Strategically located on its own little island, overlooking the Isle of Skye, and surrounded by the forested mountains of Kintail, this picture perfect castle has recently been restored to tell a story of Jacobean battles and bloody warfare. The castle also featured in the modern day James Bond film, Skyfall, so it’s certainly worth stopping in for a few hours.
A break to the city After miles of driving through Skye’s natural landscapes, the main road through the island will bring you to the quaint capital of Portree. A day or a couple of nights enjoying the sights and sounds of this prosperous town will make it easy to forget just how remote you are. Highlights of your stay should be savouring a half of Skye Gold Ale in the Isles Inn, nibbling at sweet cranberry bread from the Isle of Skye Baking Company, or wandering around some of the city’s art galleries and natural product shops. There are plenty of places to stay in Portree too so it provides the perfect nighttime hub for your day time activities on the island.
Majestic scenery by train They say it’s not about the destination but the journey itself, and this is particularly true when you take the train from Inverness to the end of the line at the Kyle of Lochalsh - the last town before the Skye Bridge Crossing. Even if you’ve driven to the Highlands, hop aboard the little Scotrail train from the station for one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world. The modern carriages might not be the most atmospheric but the views of looming mountains, rushing rivers and the glass-like waters of Loch Carron as you snake around the brooding coastline more than make up for it. Three trains a day, running back and forth from Inverness, make this memorable two-and-a-half-hour journey. 40
Travel
A fairy good hike No trip to the Highlands is complete without a day or two of hiking - and both the Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye both provide outstanding backdrops for walkers of all levels. A paragraph in a travel story about the region cannot convey the sheer scale and diversity of the hikes on offer, but it’s worth picking out a couple of standout trails. Turn left after crossing the bridge and drive south towards Armadale (where you can park) and you’ll come to the Point of Sleat and a walk along a track to the most southern point of Skye. The route passes a white sand beach with crystal waters - an ample resting point for a quick lunch or a thermos of coffee. Continue on to the point where you’ll find a lighthouse and some fantastic views out to the small isles of Rum, Canna and Eigg. The Fairy Pools are touted as one of Skye’s top tourist attractions and for good reason. This easy-to-follow route leads to the beautifully crystal clear blue pools on the River Brittle. If you’re brave enough to enter the cold water (it’s freezing even in summer) the pools make for a magical dip, but most will be happy for the unique photo opportunity.
A wee dram
Remote restaurants to remember With so much beautiful, fresh produce from the land and sea available to chefs, it’s no wonder that Skye is home to its fair share of fine dining establishments. If you drive for an hour northwest of Portree to the remote village of Colbost, reward yourself with lunch or dinner at the award-winning Three Chimneys. The restaurant and luxury B&B serves locally inspired dishes with a touch of elegance from a comfortable dining room that provides the perfect spot to watch the afternoon clouds roll in from the North Sea. In the summer savour the endlessly long mild nights with a glass of wine, or cosy up in the winter with a warming glass of the restaurant’s famed mulled cider. The island also boasts a roster of big-name chefs such as Michelinstarred Michael Smith at Loch Bay and Paul Rankin, who took over Stein Inn in August last year.
Dreaming of a dram? Whisky flows through the veins of Scotland, with each region offering its own unique flavour and characteristics to the amber coloured liquor. The Talisker Distillery, located about a 30-minute drive from the Skye Bridge, might be one of the most recognisable and popular brands globally but this hasn’t really changed the process by which the spirit is made. Talisiker still uses the natural spring water from the surrounding areas, locally-sourced barley and traditional wooden vessels for fermentation. Not just for whisky connoisseurs, a visit to the brewery includes a tour and tasting that will interest even non whisky-drinkers. Plus if it’s a nice day, you can take a small boat along the burn and into the loch.
A Tale of Two Cities: Edinburgh & Glasgow Even if your intention is to spend a week exploring the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands, it would be a shame to fly all the way from Asia and not enjoy the sights and sounds of one of Scotland’s two main cities. Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, is where tradition meets gardens, galleries and cultural attractions; its grey stone architecture and iconic castle make it a city that’s hard to forget. Head to Edinburgh in August
to experience the atmosphere and performances of its annual month-long International Fringe Festival. Just don’t forget to sort out your accommodation early because everything gets booked up well in advance. Glasgow is the edgier, modern cousin with arts and restaurants aplenty. Its recent city centre regeneration has made Glasgow one of the UK’s fastest growing economies and dynamic places to live and visit. 41

very year, I promise to exercise more, eat less meat, cultivate a new hobby... I don’t exactly nail every resolution, but I still value how they help me to reflect on the last year and plan an even better 2020. So in honour of the tradition, here are a few ways you can keep your resolutions - at least for a weekend - at the hottest new hotels in Asia.
RESOLUTION: EXERCISE MORE Opening in March, One&Only Desaru Coast is taking over a pretty plot of land on the southeastern shore of Malaysia, about two hours from Singapore by car. The villas and suites - designed as an homage to Malaysian “kampung” villages - are wedged between a dense rainforest and the South China Sea, ensuring every guest has a fantastic view. Those hoping to exercise more in 2020 can try their hand at tennis, learn silat (traditional Malaysian martial arts) or test their mettle with a bit of kite surfing - the list of outdoor activities could keep you busy for months. oneandonlyresorts.com/desaru-coast

NEW KID Morpheus Hotel is Macau's latest luxurious hotel to open, and a new personal favourite of mine. The building's signature design alone is worth a trip, and the suites and spa are similarly impressive. Morpheus Spa has only six treatment rooms but they are huge and you really feel like you’re in your own cozy space. There’s also an in-house butler, an in-room dining menu that you pre-order before treatment and an actual “snow garden” with real snow! I was blown away before the facial had even started. Don’t miss the common area, best utilised before your treatment, with a large heated jacuzzi pool, steam room and sauna. One of my fave natural skincare brands, Subtle Energies, is also carried here - gold stars all round! City of Dreams Macau, Estr. do Istmo, Cotai, +853-8868-3432, cityofdreamsmacau.com/morpheus
MICHELIN, MAN Foodies, gourmands, all-round food lovers! If you haven’t taken a foodie’s trip to Macau, this is officially the year to do it. Last month, the 12th edition of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2020 was announced, with a fantastic selection of newly starred restaurants, many of which are personal favourites of mine. Ten Macau restaurants received their star, seven received two, and three lucky spots received a gasp-inducing three stars. If you aren’t about that fine dining experience, there were also local six street food outlets that made the list. Hit the streets and get ready to taste to your heart’s content! guide.michelin.com/mo/en/macau-region/macau
ACAI OF RELIEF Acai bowl lovers rejoice, we finally have a place in Macau for this delicious breakfast dish! Newly opened Habitbox has landed on the local scene with some great healthy eating options, like salads, sandwiches, yoghurts, cold-pressed juices and homemade almond milk. But you really can’t miss their fantastic smoothie and acai bowls. There are a few different varieties available with different toppings and all equally tasty, but for the best photo, opt for the “Naked Coconut,” served up in an actual coconut! They also have monthly meal plans available for anyone looking to eat healthier this year. 44A, Rua dos Ervanários, Taipa, +853-65868613, facebook.com/habitboxmacau.

Problems often appear early in life, with an estimated 50 percent of those diagnosed with a mental health issue showing signs before the age of 14, according to Mind HK. That’s why early detection and intervention can be massively important in getting kids the help and support they may need to cope. When it’s your own children, however, noticing the subtle signs can be difficult to spot. But Mind HK says there are a few things to look out for: • Behavioural changes - being withdrawn or agitated for example • Difficulty sleeping and overtiredness during the day • Issues interacting with others - awkwardness in social situations when they were previously comfortable • Use of drugs and alcohol Here are a few resources available in Hong Kong if you think someone in your family might be struggling with early mental health issues.
MINDHK (COOLMINDS) MindHK is the leading not-for-profit and mental health resource in Hong Kong. Their Coolminds initiative is run in partnership with KELY Support Group, and aims to deliver international best practice in youth mental health. In addition to supporting parents and young people, Coolminds also works with teachers and educators, giving them the tools to identify and support students who may be struggling. You’ll also find a ton of useful online resources on the website. mind.org.hk 46

ECO BABY
COO CLUB Whether you’re a first-time parent or you’ve already got a large brood at home, babies grow fast and their gorgeous, often expensive, clothes become redundant pretty fast. Enter Coo Club, a new circular fashion club for baby clothes founded by local Sai Kung mama Louise Schenk. Parents pay by the month to borrow from a cute collection of basics such as onesies, pants, shorts, sweaters, and jammies in sizes from newborn to 24 months. When baby grows, simply swap pieces out for the next size (even if they’re a bit grubbier than when you received them). Members can either select items directly or share a few details with Louise and she’ll choose items that will work for you and your growing family. This service isn’t just for parents who don’t have the space to store outgrown baby clothes, it’s also a way for them to consume consciously. Borrow the bulk and just buy a few unique pieces to keep your little one’s wardrobe unique. At the end of the cycle, used clothes are recycled and regenerated into something new. whatcookidsdo.com

TODDLER SIPPY CUPS So, your baby has graduated from the bottle but they’re definitely not ready for an open cup yet. There’s now a huge range of sippy cups on the market that help reduce the chance of spills but also prepare your toddler for the next stage. Here’s four to try: Tommee Tippee Explora Weaning First Cup My little girl was a big fan of this cup from around six months. It’s small with easy to grip handles and she loved to gnaw on the super soft spout while she was teething.
Miracle 360 Training Cup by Munchkin The 360-degree drinking lid has a special automatic seal. It’s travel-friendly, easy to clean as it doesn’t have a tube or spout, and is dishwasher-safe. $75 from Mothercare.
Skip Hop Zoo Straw Bottle Slightly larger than others, this basic bottle does exactly what you need it to. It comes with a push-down straw and there are so many cute animal designs to choose from.
Think Thinkster of Steel Prefer to steer clear of plastic? This 9oz metal bottle comes with a soft silicon cap and nospill straw, keeping drinks hot or cool longer than its plastic counterparts. Don’t forget to sterilise it thoroughly as it can leave a slight metallic taste in your water when new. A better option for 15 months plus!

$111 from iHerb.
$65 from Baby Basics.
