Feeling helpless in the face of our mounting environmental problems? These Hongkongers show how one person can inspire change on a large scale

EDITOR’S LETTER

INSPIRE, EMPOWER If, like many of us, you feel like nothing you do is going to make the least bit of difference to our world’s environmental woes, think again. For this month’s issue, we speak to six Hongkongers who have individually contributed significant change. Whether it’s through advocacy and awareness campaigns (David Yeung’s Green Monday campaign has led to 23 percent of Hongkongers adopting a greener diet) to physically removing trash from our shores (veteran diver Harry Chan has personally removed 100 tonnes of ghost nets from Hong Kong waters), these inspirational individuals show that one person’s efforts can lead to significant changes on both an environmental and policy level. Read their stories on p.26. Changing gears: we can’t believe that Christmas is around the corner! With just seven weeks go to, it’s time to organise the most important event of all: your Christmas meal. Whether you’re vegan, have allergies or intolerances, or simply want a more ethically-reared bird on your dinner table, we’ve got all the suppliers you need on p.34. November means that men’s health is on the agenda, with the launch of the annual Movember campaign. Expect upper lips across the city to sport some stylish bristles all month long to raise funds and awareness of men’s health, including male-specific cancers and mental wellbeing. Learn all about the Hong Kong chapter of the campaign on p.38. There’s no time like now to unleash your inner eco-warrior. Go forth!

MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS Six inspiring Hongkongers speak to Zoe Belhomme about how their actions have led to incredible change, p.26.

Ready to splurge? Kate Springer has eco and spa retreats that don’t skimp on luxury. Like, at all, p.50. If you’ve always wanted to give Wonderfruit a whirl, our newest contributor Carla Thomas shows you what to expect at the Thai wellness festival, p.46.

Remember Movember! Tanya Hodgson learns all about the charity on a mission to improve men’s health, p.38.

An expert on healthy living in Macau, Sally Victoria Benson spills the beans on the upcoming Grand Prix, p.52.

FRESH CUTS Dining news that’s good for you

PRETTY DISHY Located in the rather swanky new Lee Garden Three in Causeway Bay, Next Door Cafe & Bar is the creation of head chef Bryan Nagao in collaboration with design company BoConcept, which supplied the restaurant’s chic funishings. The dining area is light and spacious, with soft marble and a minimalistic design, while outside there’s an almost unheard-of 800-square-foot terrace. But what about the food, we hear you cry? This casual restaurant isn’t just style over substance. A hearty salad bar with rotating seasonal options each day mean there’s something for most tastes, and is pleasantly diverse without being overwhelming. It also offers a selection of cold-pressed juices at prices you won’t baulk at. Unit 206-210, Lee Garden Three, 10 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, 2606-6665, www.nextdoorcafe.com.hk.

THE EMPORIO STRIKES BACK Known on the foodie scene for importing decadent ingredients such as caviar and truffles, you’d be forgiven for thinking there wouldn’t be anything on the menu for health-conscious diners at Emporio Antico, a food import company that also runs a restaurant in Wan Chai. But looks can be deceiving. Under the helm of new Executive Chef Mike Boyle, Emporio Antico’s new lunch and à la carte menus have pivoted towards wellness while still giving you something to savour. The restaurant is still very much a fine dine, but it has switched out certain offending ingredients and replaced them with lighter options to keep sugar and excess calories to a minimum. From Caesar 14

salad made from kale and sourdough croutons, to a super fresh heirloom tomato salad with avocado and goat’s cheese, you’ll find healthier cooking methods and quality ingredients that don’t compromise on taste. Desserts, including a dark chocolate cake and a British-inspired berry trifle, are made with refined sugar alternatives so you can finish off your meal guilt-free. In addition to the à la carte menu, Emporio Antico has a daily lunch buffet with a main course option ranging from $138 to $238. 18F/ 239 Hennessy Rd., Wan Chai, 2387-7168, www.emporioantico.com.

AN OFFICER’S MESS Located on the top floor of the transformed Police Headquarters at Tai Kwun, our “ditch the diet” suggestion for this month is Statement, a modern British restaurant paying homage to the colonial history that has contributed to Hong Kong’s unique East-West heritage. Full of British flavours and ingredients sourced from top suppliers in the UK, the menu starts off strong, with crusty bread and hand-churned marmiteinfused butter - remember there’s three courses to come before you devour the whole loaf! The menu rotates seasonally but expect starters such as pan-fried scallops with smoked

cabbage hearts and Welsh laverbread. Mains feel more traditional, like Gressingham duck with plum sauce and salt-baked carrots, or Wicks Manor Farm pork loin with black pudding and quince jelly. We recommend the cranberrypoached pear and buttermilk caramel mousse with Scottish shortbread (pictured), but if you’re ignoring the calorie content, try the decadent sticky toffee pudding instead. REHAB TRAINING: YOUR ANSWER TO INJURY PREVENTION AND PAIN MANAGEMENT DO YOU have muscle pains? DO YOU have tight muscles which restrict your movements? DO YOU have poor posture? ARE YOU seeking to return to physical exercise after an injury or after physiotherapy? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you may be an ideal candidate for rehabilitation (or rehab) training with one of our qualified rehab trainers.

What is a rehab trainer? A rehab trainer is a personal trainer who has been specifically trained and is qualified to assess you for muscular and postural imbalances, evaluate your functional movements, and provide you with corrective exercises and workouts designed to release tight muscles, activate weak muscles and retrain your body to move correctly. Why is rehab training necessary? Whether you are suffering from the overuse of certain muscles, extended sitting, poorly fitting footwear, an accident, or incorrect training form, these can all create muscle imbalances. Left untreated, these can cause tight muscles leading to pain, postural issues, inflammatory conditions and potential injury. What are some of the benefits of having a rehab trainer? As well as receiving the usual benefits of exercise (such as fat loss), consistent practice of the exercises provided by your rehab trainer can help you strengthen and release the correct muscles, improve your balance, correct your posture,

reduce your pain, improve your range of motion, build your strength and even improve your breathing in some cases. Why Ozone Fitness? Ozone Fitness has four qualified rehab trainers, led by Martin Wong who has an M.Sc. degree in Sports Medicine and Health Science and a B.Sc. Ed degree in Sports Science. Through this rehab specialisation, we have seen clients become pain free, open up their posture, move better and grow stronger. This has enabled them to move more functionally in daily life and improved their workout performance.

SPECIAL OFFER FOR LIV READERS For the month of November, Liv readers who are interested in rehab or rehab training will be entitled to a free rehab assessment, subject to Ozone’s terms and conditions. For further details, please contact James at tel. 6689 3996 or email info@ozone.fitness.

Craniosacral Therapy with Cranio HK The Buzz:

Essential oil candle & perfume-making The Buzz: Whether it’s used to calm the mind or

invigorate the senses, aromatherapy has has so many positive benefits. Learn more about the practice and have fun making your own candles with Alice Scott, a nutritional therapist and aromatherapist who runs intimate essential oil and beauty workshops from her Mid-Levels flat. For this class we learnt about blending essential oils to create a bespoke natural soy candle and rollerball perfume. The Class: A group of six of us arrived at Alice’s home

on a rainy Wednesday evening and were welcomed with a glass of wine and a selection of tasty nibbles. As we were all complete aromatherapy novices, our host spent some time explaining the benefits of the different oils and how to create the perfect combination depending on the effect you’re after. We were then left to explore and experiment with between four to six oils before being given some melted soy wax, a glass jar and wick to construct our candle. The Verdict: If you’re looking to do something different

with a group of friends, Alice’s classes are ideal. Wellpriced and personalised to the needs of her guests, the sessions are both informative and therapeutic - plus you get some great little takeaways! The Cost: Prices range from $400 - $500 per person,

depending on what you’re making and the class size. An additional fee will be charged for Alice to come to your home. To enquire about booking your own workshop, email her on scottsapothecary@gmail.com.

Craniosacral therapy has been around for a while, but while it’s best known as a noninvasive treatment for infants or adults suffering from headaches, it’s also therapeutic on an emotional level: the practitioner works to address old tensions and traumas to find emotional release aided by gentle physical manipulations. The Treatment: Our session was with certified craniosacral

therapist Christine Domingo Klitsie. After taking our medical history, she took us through a detailed introduction to craniosacral therapy. She then explained how our bodies react to tension, and how prolonged stress suppresses the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to digestive issues, emotional imbalances and other physical symptoms. Through gentle, almost imperceptible manipulations combined with Somatic Experiencing, a therapy that aims to release “stuck” physical states caused by trauma by having the patient pay attention to their physical sensations, Christine gently guided us to a place of greater physical and emotional freedom. The verdict: We were expecting an hour-long head massage, but Christine’s method is so much more. With her background in Somatic Experiencing, she regularly takes deep-dives with her clients, looking after their mental wellbeing as much as their physical symptoms. Christine lends a professional, sympathetic ear and a gentle touch to address both the physical and emotional aspects of your symptoms. Price: $1,500 for first consultation (75 minutes); $1,200

for subsequent treatments. Room 606, 6/F Cosmos Building 8-11 Lan Kwai Fong, Central, 2523-3780, cranio-hk.com.

Q What is the inspiration for your latest collection? A: The keyword for the inspiration of my new collection is “psychedelic.” As you can see, it is full of radiant colors, including fluorescent hues such as violet, red and green. Right now I’m obsessed with flowers and plants - particularly orchids - and so you will find floral motifs in my collection from time to time - for instance the padparacha sapphire flower ring, which embodies blooming flowers in the spring. I also love animals and used to have a lovely sparrow back in the day. These sparrow earrings vividly reflect the side view of two sparrows perching on a branch.

Q You are well known for some extremely intricate designs. What items in your collection to you think would be suitable for gifting? A: We do have some entry-level pieces that make perfect gifts. For example, our South Sea white pearl earrings and rings are simple, easy to wear and elegant. Or you can take a look at these open-end rings (above right). We have Emerald and Diamond rings, and Rubellite and Diamond rings to choose from. They can be tailor-made with different gold and stone combinations. You are more than welcome to stop by our shop to tell us what unique combination you like, and we can tailor-make it for you.

Q Can you give us some tips on how to pick a piece of jewellery for a gift? A: There are a few tricks for gifting a jewellery piece to a special one. Firstly, you’ll want to select something that’s easy to wear so that they can can wear it on daily basis. Having a piece that they will keep in a safe box forever and never wear is a waste of both your effort and money. Secondly, you can find inspiration from his or her birthstone. For example, the birthstone for June is pearl, and September’s is sapphire. Not only is it a unique and meaningful gift, it also shows you made an effort to pick something special. Last but not least, you probably have to secretly "investigate" the gift receiver's ring/wrist size, although we are always happy to resize it for you.

Q You also accept custom orders. Can you tell us more about that process? A: For custom-made pieces, the first and most important step is always to sit down and chat with the client. It's essential to understand the purpose behind each and every piece so I can better fulfill the client's requirements. Then, I'll draw up some sketches for the client to choose from and amendments will be made upon request. For complex pieces we can show the client the initial jewellery mold to ensure the final piece will perfectly reflect the client's vision. The starting price depends on several elements: the size of the particular piece, the quality and the size of the main gemstone, as well as the complexity level for manufacturing the piece. In general I would say the starting price would be around HK$10,000.

GAME CHANGERS In the face of our planet’s overwhelming environmental issues, it’s all too easy to assume that one person’s effort can’t make a difference. But these six inspirational Hongkongers prove that one person can indeed have a massive impact, be it by personally collecting trash or by shaping public attitudes on a massive scale. HARRY CHAN HARRY’S IMPACT GHOST NETS COLLECTED FROM HONG KONG WATERS: 100 tonnes INDIVIDUAL CLEAN-UP DIVES COMPLETED: More than 200 GROUP CLEAN UPS: More than 100 POLYSTYRENE AND MARINE PLASTIC WASTE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE OCEAN: 80 tonnes, including more than 1,000 plastic bags

“IT’S THE DUTY OF DIVERS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR WATERS.”

A

t 66 years old, many people wouldn’t blame Harry Chan, for taking a more sedate approach to life. But Harry is a man on a mission. Around twice a month, he dons his wetsuit and dives to the bottom of the seabed in search of ghost nets, which are deadly to marine life and dangerous for swimmers. Tell us about your love of diving and how you used your passion to fight Hong Kong’s marine waste problems. I’ve been diving around the world for more than 30 years, but while in my home waters I noticed how many cheap ghost nets were left dumped in the water and tangled on reefs. They posed a safety hazard, so I just started dragging them out of the water so they could be collected by waste services on land. I soon realised that the problem was huge, and the situation wasn’t about to change, so I started going out regularly with friends and eco-groups. It quickly became my passion. In your opinion, are things changing? Unfortunately it’s hard to change habits of a lifetime and it’s unlikely that the fishing industry will stop dumping ghost nets - it’s the easiest and most cost effective solution. On the plus side I see more people caring about our environment and offering their time

26

and support, but unless fundamental changes are made to policies change is futile, and our beautiful and extensive coastal system will never be clean. Why do you spend your savings and free time fighting a war that you know you can’t win? I just want to contribute back to the place I’ve called home my whole life and inspire the younger generation to take action. If everyone did just a little bit, it would have a massive impact. What can be done? In my opinion, it’s all about education and governmental change. Children are now being taught about our waste problems at school and they are the ones educating their parents’ generation. Governmental policies need to change fundamentally before we can expect to see real improvements to our environment. I also share all the work I do on social media and encourage everyone who joins me to do the same to raise the profile of the problems right on their doorstep. What advice would you give to people who want to give something back? Don’t be too extreme with anything you do. Find a balance that works. DAVID YEUNG of Green Monday DAVID’S IMPACT ANIMAL LIVES SAVED: 300,000,000 per year CARBON EMISSIONS SAVED: 1 million tonnes per year WATER SAVED: 1 trillion tonnes per year HONGKONGERS ADOPTING A FLEXITARIAN DIET: 23%

G

reen Monday founder David Yeung has dramatically shaped how people eat. By bringing innovative meat alternatives to Hong Kong and engaging individuals and corporates alike to adopt a lower-meat diet, David has helped to revolutionise Hong Kong’s food scene. Tell us how you became one of Hong Kong’s bestknown eco ambassadors. Turning to a plant-based diet was a personal choice, until I found out more than a decade ago about the environmental impact the livestock industry has on our planet, and the urgency of the climate crisis we are facing. The latest UN IPCC report tells us we have a 12-year window remaining before the world suffers an irreversible climate catastrophe. What do you want to achieve with Green Monday, and its sister brand, Green Common? Our motto is to “make change happen, make green common.” We want the Green Monday movement and our Green Common stores to work hand-in-hand to catalyze the world towards a healthier and more sustainable future. What do you think the future holds for green innovation? I am a big believer that sustainability requires innovation; I am also deeply passionate about all social or technological innovations that can create better, greener alternatives in our lives. We are at a critical juncture of humanity’s evolution. This test will either break us, or it will lead us to a major breakthrough. I am still hopeful that the world’s creative, scientific and logical minds can

get us through this crisis. What are some ways you’ve encouraged people to take up a plant-based diet in Asia? The majority of people choose their food based on taste, affordability, convenience and trend. So there is no better way to change perceptions and behaviours than by simply innovating better food and food experiences. That’s where emerging plant-based brands such as Beyond Burger, Impossible Foods, JUST, Oatly and Omnipork come in. These foods aren’t just for vegans; they are great products for all. Green Common and our partner restaurants and supermarkets are making these plant-based options super accessible. What kind of trends are you seeing in the Hong Kong F&B industry when it comes to vegetarian and vegan food? 2018 has been a tipping point. We are witnessing a sharp increase in plant-based offerings in almost all cuisines, and the awareness is growing exponentially. The most encouraging sign is that more local chains are joining the green movement, evidenced by the recent collaboration between Omnipork and local chains “Food Expression,” “King of Sheng Jian” and “Meat Pie Gor” - these are inexpensive restaurants frequented by everyday people, and it’s an encouraging sign that the meat-free movement is entering every sector of society. Non-dairy is another segment that is seeing dramatic growth; From artisanal coffee shops to mass market chains, consumers can find many non-dairy options on the menu. greenmonday.org

HANNAH CHUNG Zero Waste Queen “THE AVERAGE HONGKONGER SENDS 1.39 KILOS OF SOLID WASTE TO LANDFILLS EACH DAY. ”

H

annah Chung has been on a personal zero waste challenge for two years, and has become one of the city’s best known green ambassadors. Wherever possible, she has vowed not to purchase anything with packaging that cannot be reused, up-cycled, or recycled. Why is waste reduction so important to you? A great quote from Gary Stokes of Sea Shepherd is, “If you come home to see your bath leaking, do you grab a mop or turn the tap off?” The real problem we have is that most things are designed to be used once and disposed of. Yes, we do need to recycle what we have, but we also have to move away from our disposable culture and turn off the plastic tap. Do you believe anyone can adopt a zerowaste lifestyle or is it just too restrictive? A zero-waste lifestyle is similar to veganism in terms of restrictiveness. I am not a vegan, but I have drastically reduced my meat and dairy intake over the past few years as my contribution to reducing carbon emissions.

My message isn’t to change your daily habits to achieve absolute zero waste; it’s being aware of the excessive amounts of trash we produce and finding creative ways to reduce waste that work for each individual. Can individuals really make a difference? Yes! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless with all the problems of over-consumption, global warming, rising sea levels and the amount of waste in our oceans. I believe the more we understand the extent of the problem, the better we can be at adapting, and it all starts on an individual level. Spend money on the businesses that you want to see flourish and understand that it’s part of a movement that puts pressures on companies to make the changes we need. Rather than waiting for government legislation, we can all contribute by voicing our demands and voting with our dollars. What changes would you like to see in the waste industry in 10 years time? I am optimistic about the future and know that we will find ways to solve our waste crisis. Currently, 73% of plastic waste entering our oceans is for single-use purposes, most of which are food and beverage packaging and utensils. A re-design of our whole system, from linear to circular will be how companies will operate in the future. I am working with Revolv a startup that will disrupt the packaging industry by creating a sharing economy for food containers. We are aiming to be at the forefront of the circular movement and creating communities of people moving away from our disposable culture. In 10 years time, I believe we will find it weird to be walking down the street with a disposable coffee cup. instagram.com/thezerowastechallenge

S

haun Cunningham is the founder of vegan brand Future Kind, with the mission of helping the planet shift to a plant-based diet. On the side, he runs Microadventures Hong Kong, a 3,000-strong organisation dedicated to bringing more adventure into our lives. He’s also the founder of the environmental advocacy group A Letter A Day to Keep The Plastic Away. Tell us why waste reduction, particularly in single-use plastic, is so important to you? Like many Aussies, I spent much of my childhood at the beach. When I moved here five years ago, I was blown away by the region’s natural beauty, but saddened by the amount of plastic waste in the water. The dumping of any kind of material in the ocean is a tragedy, but single-use plastic is particularly unfortunate because it is so easily avoided. How did you come up with the idea for ‘A Letter a Day to keep the Plastic Away’? It all started after I went shopping at my local supermarket in Kennedy Town and noticed the amount of individually wrapped fruits and vegetables on the shelves. I posted a photo on Facebook, and unsurprisingly, a number of others also expressed their dismay. It was then I decided to create a group based on a simple idea: what if we could send a letter each day to different organisations asking them to reduce their use of single-use plastic? Wouldn’t it be worth it if even just one company decided to make a change?

Why do you think there is such a waste problem here? The SARS epidemic, long working hours, shortsighted governance and the ability to ship waste to the mainland all created the perfect storm for Hong Kong’s unprecedented levels of waste and low rates of recycling. The SARS epidemic resulted in a culture of “wrapping everything in plastic” for hygiene, but 15 years later, we need to move on. Long working hours and a large wealth gap have also pushed waste management and recycling down the agenda. Can individuals really make a difference? It’s a cliche, but if you don’t, who will? History is filled with figures who took a stand and changed the course of humanity. The problem is enormous but so are the opportunities. How have businesses responded? Our Facebook group is filled with success stories from restaurants that have agreed to take action based on the letters written by our members. Many restaurant owners simply didn’t make the connection and there is even the possibility to save money by reducing their waste. Supermarkets have been a much more challenging target, often responding with generic pre-written letters, the contents of which are in essence “we’re still prioritising making money over your health and the environment”. This is where we need the government to step in. tinyurl.com/letter-a-day

s the founder of Hong Kong’s first and largest cleanup organisation, Lisa empowers thousands of corporations, schools, community groups and individuals alike to clean up Hong Kong’s coastlines and country parks, increase awareness and curb the input of debris into the ocean. Tell us more about Hong Kong Cleanup. The idea is simple: we organise bespoke managed corporate cleanups throughout the year and during the annual Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge, which runs from September 15-December 15. Our signature event takes place on the third Saturday in September: World Cleanup Day. As the official International Coastal Cleanup coordinator on behalf of our global charity partner, Ocean Conservancy, we collect data and work on sciencebased solutions to solve this issue. How has our coastline changed since you started Hong Kong Cleanup in 2000? Despite our best efforts, the amount of plastic washing up on our shores is getting worse every year. It would be easy to become despondent you need to be an optimist to work in this space! Awareness levels of the problem are growing and we hope to see a major shift soon. How do people’s attitudes need to change? We all use plastics in our everyday lives, so small

30

changes in behaviour by a lot of people can have a huge effect. The challenge is to reverse some 60 years of training for the throwaway society we live in today, and there’s no doubt that beach cleanups are playing a major role in increasing awareness of the problems and solutions. How can Hongkongers get involved You can choose to participate in a managed, non-managed or community cleanup. Managed cleanups are best suited to corporates looking for fun, meaningful and empowering team-building exercises. For these, the Hong Kong Cleanup team will guide you on best practices and educate participants on the problem of marine plastic pollution. For non-managed cleanups you simply need to pick a date and a beach, and register your team on our website. www.HKcleanup.org. As an individual, it can be easy to feel helpless when looking at the sheer scale of the problem. What can people do to stop plastic winding up in our seas? Every small action makes a difference, and when many individuals get together to reduce their consumption habits, long term behaviour and real change can be seen. Bringing your own bags, refusing all single-use plastics and shopping in bulk are a few of the easier ways to get started. hkcleanup.org

T

he head of community and corporate outreach at Eco Drive, Hong Kong’s newest advocacy group striving to reduce single-use plastic via outreach and education, Yolanda seeks to affect change on a larger scale by influencing top-level decision-makers at corporates, schools and other groups. Why is reducing plastic waste in Hong Kong so important to you? Hong Kong rarely prosecutes littering offenses, and with people so used to the convenience of the city, they often just leave their garbage for others to clean up. Then, after a rainstorm, litter travels through our drains and into the sea. Single-use plastic is used, on average, for just 15 minutes, and then it stays on the planet for hundreds of years. Finally, only 5 percent of single-use plastics are being collected and recycled in Hong Kong. Who knows where the rest goes? Why do we have such a big plastic problem in Hong Kong? There is generally distrust in recycling services, so most people don’t bother to separate their waste. There is very little education on how to separate, and the general public doesn’t know what kind of plastics can or cannot be recycled. Few companies pick up and separate plastic because there is no incentive; it takes up too much space and it’s less profitable compared to other recyclables, although Hong Kong Recycles and Chun Shing are two good companies

that will come and take away your plastic. Finally, with no incinerator, everything we throw away goes to the landfill. How are you encouraging people to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic? We are reaching out to workplaces, schools and community groups, as well as speaking at events. In our presentations, we highlight facts and hope people will change their consumption habits. We have had a lot of success with corporates, and most are now eliminating bottled water in their conference rooms, and providing pitchers of filtered water instead. We also hope to enlist the help of volunteers and supporters to talk to their property management companies where they live to encourage them to separate waste and ensure plastic recycling is being done. We can support people by providing lists of companies who collect plastic, as well as marketing tools such as videos and infographics. What can businesses do to ease the problem? Corporates should stop giving out plastic water bottles and instead supply filtered water. Hong Kong tap water is quite safe. The government is working on a producer responsibility scheme which would make currently worthless PET bottles worth something if returned. www.facebook.com/ecodrivehongkong

ASK THE EXPERT

Dani Figueiras, Chi Nei Tsang practicioner Q I feel I have a balanced diet, and I do my best to look after myself, but I often feel bloated. What are the reasons? A Symptoms such as bloating, gas, cramps, diarrhea or constipation are a clear sign that something is amiss in your digestive tract. One cause may be insufficient levels of healthy bacteria, often caused by candida, a fungus overgrowth. In addition to cutting out sugar, which feeds the candida, it is also important to increase good bacteria with probiotics and propolis to help fight the fungus.

BEST OF BRITISH Looking for a turkey that’ll really turn heads? This year, citysuper is bringing in organic turkeys from Daylesford, an award-winning family-run farm in Gloucestershire that’s the darling of London’s foodie and wellness scene. Known for its quality produce and ethical rearing techniques, it has farm shops in chic addresses such as Notting Hill, Marylebone and Pimlico. Buy chilled or cooked as part of the “Best of citysuper” catering platter ($7,988 for 8-10 diners). citysuper.com.hk.

NO HARM, NO FOWL New meat deliver company, Aussie Meat, is bringing in a limited order of free-range self-basting Steggles turkeys from Down Under. Raised in large barns and free from hormones, be sure to place your order early. A roughly three-kilo bird is $470.

Cultivating mindfulness in your everyday life is also very important – especially when it comes to eating. • Pay full attention to the experience of eating and drinking. • Notice the colours, textures and temperature of your food, as well as the flavour. • If possible, avoid conversation while you are eating because this can increase air in the abdomen. • Put your mobile phone aside and forget it for a while. • Avoid any stress while eating and drinking. • Chew slowly and thoroughly. This is vital for good digestion. Another very effective way to address this health issue is to look at the emotions. Chi Nei Tsang is a therapeutic abdominal massage which originated in ancient China and uses a combination of gentle and deeply healing touch, breath and energy work to help clear out stored emotional energy and physical toxins. This powerful method works with the major systems of the body: breath, vascular, lymphatic, nervous, fascia, muscular and the meridians. It detoxifies, pumps the organs with fresh blood and oxygen, and aids in the release of wastes and toxins. It also helps to correct the body structurally, especially the psoas muscle which helps with back pain. Anyone suffering from digestive issues, poor sleeping patterns, stress or anxiety could definitely consider Chi Nei Tsang massage.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT:

The Movember Campaign November wouldn’t be November without its annual display of moustaches, all cultivated in the name of charity thanks to Movember, the wildly popular grassroots campaign. This hirsute pursuit of raising awareness and funds for men’s health gets Hong Kong into a furry-lipped frenzy every year, and we spoke with Movember Hong Kong ambassador James Carlile (pictured, right) to find out more. By Tanya Hodgson

38

Q Can you give us a brief history of the Movember campaign? The campaign started back in Melbourne, Australia as a grassroots effort when two mates joked about bringing the moustache back into fashion. Whilst talking to friends, they were inspired by one of their mothers who was fundraising for breast cancer, leading them to create a campaign for men’s health and prostate cancer.

Community

Q What sort of issues does the Movember campaign hope to shine a light on? In 2003, it mainly focused on prostate cancer. However, Movember as an organisation has since diversified and has widened its focus to become a catch-all about men’s health. There are some key pillars of the Movember campaign and one of them is cancer, including prostate cancer and testicular cancer. But what we’re really starting to see now is more emphasis on mental health, suicide prevention and depression that makes up the second pillar. Q How is the Movember normalising men’s health issues in Hong Kong? The Movember campaign has taken quite a low-key approach and it’s very much about starting to get people talking about men’s health issues, for example having a conversation over a beer with a mate and asking them how they are feeling. We are starting to see this more, particularly in clubs and organisations where people come together, and slowly but surely these sorts of conversations are becoming normalised in these social scenes. There are also lots of activities to participate in during the month of November to raise awareness, whether it’s growing a moustache or taking part in Move for Movember - a project in which we ask you to commit to running or walking 60 kilometres over the course of November.

Q There is a perception that Movember is mainly an event for expatriate men. Do you agree? It’s certainly how it started because people came to Hong Kong and brought this idea with them. I think as the campaign becomes more mature year after year, the audience will certainly become much broader and it will start reaching out more to local men. One of the more popular things we did last year, which was part of the Move for Movember project, saw a 50/50 turnout in terms of gender mix as well as local men and expatriate men. All the proceeds from these kinds of projects are donated to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund as well as other local organisations, so we’re really keen to build that relationship with the local community.

39

P Ch oo mtmo ug nr iatpyh e r

Q Mental health is a huge topic at the moment, particularly among men. How does Movember raise awareness for mental health? The biggest awareness factor is the moustache and that’s what the organisation was founded on. The idea is that by men having a moustache during the month of November, they become a bit of an icon and a champion. Beyond that we encourage participants to organise their own events whether that’s through their corporates, work, sports clubs, friends and family. This can be done by visiting the Movember website where you can either host an event, or find an event to participate in. Q Can you share with us some details of fundraising events or cross-promotions taking place in November? We’re doing a lot of work with some long-term partners here such as Beef & Liberty. They are hosting a quiz night in the middle of the month and they’re also going to host an end of Movember party where there’ll be a big shave-off. We’re also collaborating with Selvedge groomers, in which anyone who is growing a moustache for Movember can receive a complimentary shave. There are a lot more events to look forward to, so definitely stay updated by visiting our website.

Q How can our readers get involved? The first thing is to grow a moustache if they can, and if they can’t they should encourage their friends and family to grow their mos. The second thing is the Move for Movember project - the best way to get involved there is to register online on the website and to create an event. Last year we had a range of events being held, from CrossFit, to hiking, to yoga. A group of friends can get together and create an event, chip in some money and that gets donated to the campaign. If you can’t create an event, you can also participate in events already on the Movember website. Q How much have you raised to date for local men’s health charities in Hong Kong? Since 2012, the Movember Foundation has raised a total of HK$16.8 million and counting for local men’s health charities which support these issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Register a fundraiser and get a full events calendar at hk.movember.com.

READY SET GLOW with Rachel Read

ME AND MY SHADOW It’s time to mention the dreaded C-word… yes, Christmas is coming! If you’re after some no-brainer goodies for your holiday shopping list, Christian Louboutin Beauté has just launched Tape à l’Oeil Eye Colours, their very first eyeshadow collection - just in time for you to start dropping some significant hints to your nearest and dearest. Comprising a total of twelve shades (six matte nudes, six shimmering metallics), the Art Deco packaging is every bit as gorgeous as we’ve come to expect from Louboutin’s beauty products. The formula is lightweight and long-lasting, with an innovative brush that allows for perfect application and blending, and it’s all ophthalmologist-tested and cruelty-free too. Use them as all-over eye shadows (the matte shades can also be used as primers) or go more avant-garde and create a quirky graphical look with the precision brush... Or just stare at them lovingly on your dressing table! Tape à l’Oeil Eye Colours cost $450 each. Available at Christian Louboutin's Wyndham Street boutique or at Christian Louboutin Beauté counters at Lane Crawford IFC, Canton Road and Times Square. www.asia.christianlouboutin.com. 44

ICE, ICE BABY Getting away from the cold was one of the main reasons I left the UK but I’m all for subjecting myself to some sub-zero temperatures in the name of beauty! The Ritz-Carlton Spa has just launched a new series of very cool (literally!) cryotherapy treatments, including the Cryotherapy Rejuvenation Facial; this involves -30°C purified air being blown at your face using a special machine, which has an instant revitalising effect on your complexion. The cool temperature apparently helps exfoliate away dead skin cells, leaving you ready to get your glow on. Combined with products from luxurious skincare line 111SKIN, you can expect your skin to look firmer, clearer and more luminous after just one treatment - ideal if you’ve got a special occasion that you want to look great for. I tried the facial and was pretty impressed with the results… and as someone who has braved many a British winter without central heating, I didn’t even find it that cold either! Cryotherapy body treatments designed to stimulate the lymphatic system and ease sore muscles are also available. Cryotherapy Rejuvenation Facial costs $2,580 for 60 minutes, $3,080 for 90 minutes ($100 supplement for treatments on Friday-Sunday or public holidays). The Ritz-Carlton Spa, 116/F, The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, International Commerce Centre, 1 Austin Road West, West Kowloon, 2263-2040. www.ritzcarlton.com.

HERB IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Forget farm-to-table… let’s talk farm to face instead! All-natural Kiwi beauty brand The Herb Farm has just launched in Hong Kong at A Beauty Bar - and as you might guess from its name, it's focused on harnessing the power of pure herbal ingredients for the benefit of your skin. Featuring a line-up of everything natural, nourishing and rejuvenating that you need to reboot your beauty routine (including cleanser, exfoliator, eye gel, face cream, oil and serum), The Herb Farm boasts only recyclable packaging, does not test on animals, and uses zero artificial preservatives. Products cost $320-420. Available at all A Beauty Bar locations in Hong Kong, including Harvey Nichols Central; see all locations or shop online at www.abeautybar.com.hk. THE WONDER OF WONDERFRUIT

Asia’s number-one festival for wellness, sustainability and a hippie-tastic good time draws a sizeable crowd from Hong Kong each year. Ahead of this year’s event on December 13-16, Carla Thomas gives the lowdown on what to expect. 46

Travel

I

magine going to a music festival and actually leaving feeling more energetic and invigorated than when you arrived. Sound unlikely? Dare we even say, impossible? Thailand’s Wonderfruit, Asia’s premier arts, music and lifestyle festival, is all about pulling off the impossible. Make no mistake; this is no Glastonbury or Coachella where you’ll need a week to recover. Wonderfruit is centered on wellness and sustainability, providing a platform in the process to catalyze creativity and a positive impact. What does that mean on the ground? It’s a fourday smorgasbord of workshops, talks and musical performers, raising the bar on the typical “festival” formula so that there’s something for everyone. Expect to attend and leave with realigned chakras, heightened consciousness, and some serious bliss to take with you into the stressful holiday season.

WHAT TO EXPECT Most days start off with several wellness activities designed to get attendees, or “Wonderers,” centered and stimulated. They range from the more mainstream, like your standard yoga, tai chi, or simple meditation, to less familiar avocations such as gong baths, crystal bowl

healing or cacao ceremonies. There are also several talks that cover an admirable range of issues and topics, from transgender rights to blockchain. Designed to encourage community and conversation within the festival, there are often some pretty impressive speakers that come through. Last year, AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes gave a speech on chasing your dreams. Expect award-winning authors, eco-heroes, explorers and change makers to broaden your horizons. Workshops are also available to get your creative juices flowing. Activities have included still-life watercolour painting, build-your-own beauty products and the literally eye-watering metal forging workshop (probably best to let the kids skip this one!) On that note, there’s an entire section of the festival grounds dedicated to families and kid-friendly fun. The festival’s decidedly earthy vibe doesn’t mean that it’s all about being one with nature (although there is plenty of that, including sustainable farming workshops and bug discoveries). This year, children aged 4-12 can sign up for the “In The Eyes of the Animal” VR adventure, a virtual reality experience through the eyes of a woodland creature. There’s also a giant mud bath, where kids and adults alike can nurture their inner Babe.

PLASTIC ENEMY #1 No stranger to the pitfalls of mass tourism (we’re looking at you, Maya Bay), it makes sense that a festival held in Thailand would pay strict attention to building eco-awareness and conscious consumerism. This year, organizers have pledged a zero single-use plastic policy, part of its ethos of being carbon-neutral. Festivalgoers are encouraged to carry their own metal cups, and water stations abound, so there’s no dreaded plastic water bottle problem to contend with once the revelers go home. Plastic reduction is a huge pillar of this year’s event, with plastic upcycled into beautiful art installations, and organizers partnering with local businesses and corporates to reduce their plastic footprint. Now in its fourth year, Wonderfruit is also getting better and more polished at every annual go around the verdant country club polo grounds that it’s held on. This year, organizers have moved the site ever so slightly in order to work with the land rather than against it, so expect natural elements like plants, rocks, soil and trees to be incorporated in place of concrete and bricks to build the stages and chill-out areas.

Travel

AS FOR THE MUSIC… It wouldn’t be a festival without some tunes, now would it? Past lineups (although Wonderfruit prefers the term “curated extraordinary experiences”) have included performances by Little Dragon, De La Soul and Young Fathers, with favourites from Hong Kong’s local music scene often representing. This year, headliners include Nightmares on Wax, drum ‘n’ bass icon Goldie, and disco kings Horse Meat Disco. Make sure you don’t get too caught up in the music though; the stages are eye-catching in their own right. With an emphasis on innovative and sustainable design, concepts like a modular geometric network of flexible, foldable panels made from woven, recycled material guarantee that the backdrops won’t just blend in.

I WANT TO GO TO THERE! Wonderfruit is held December 13-16 at the Siam Country Club grounds just outside Pattaya, a reasonable two-hour drive from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) - grab a taxi or book a van from Bangkok. There’s a range of onsite accommodation options, from BYO-tent to glamping in the luxurious Camp Kerala, which includes Wi-Fi, VIP access, and your own concierge service. Four-day passes for adults are now THB5,800, or about $1,384; children under 12 are welcome on the house! For more information, check out wonderfruit.co. 49

PRIVATE ISLAND INDULGENCE It takes some legwork to reach Bawah Reserve, a recently opened private island retreat in Indonesia’s Anambas archipelago, but it’s a trip of a lifetime. First, you have to make your way to Singapore, then take a ferry to Indonesia, followed by a 1.5-hour flight on the resort’s private seaplane. The water landing is stunning - picture a ring of forested islands, a private jetty, three blue lagoons, and coral reefs in all directions. Once you’ve settled in, spend your days kayaking in transparent boats (to see what’s swimming below), hiking through the rainforest, paddleboarding, diving, snorkelling, practising yoga and Pilates, or simply relaxing with unlimited spa treatments. Aside from looking after your every need, Bawah Reserve has plenty of eco credentials too: The 35 bungalows and four restaurants were all handcrafted using driftwood and bamboo. Meanwhile, there’s a zero-waste policy, renewable microgrid, water recycling programmes, an in-house garden, and strict marine conservation practices. Next time you’re celebrating something really special, this is the place. From HK$13,500 per night, inclusive of unlimited food, activities and spa treatments. Minimum three-night stay. MACAU

News and deals from our sister SAR

HAVE A SKINFUL Big news on Macau’s spa scene: St. Regis Macao’s Iridium Spa has just announced a new line of treatments in partnership with Intraceuticals, an Australian skincare brand that specialises in intense hydration. It works by delivering a cocktail of hyaluronic acid, vitamins and peptides via a three-step moisture layering system combined with a special machine that helps the products penetrate below the skin’s surface. It’s beloved by celebs - from Kim Kardashian to Susan Sarandon - who use the treatments before premieres, photoshoots and close-ups to keep skin plump and moist. If you’re into more extreme procedures such as peels, the Intraceuticals line is an excellent complement because it’s so gentle and soothing. To sweeten the pot, if you book a 60-minute Rejuvenate Booster or Opulence treatment before December 31, you get an additional 20-minute eye-booster treatment and a Booster Series home care kit worth MOP478. The facial is MOP2,880 for one, or MOP18,888 for six 60-minute sessions. The St. Regis Macao, S/N, Estr. do Istmo, Macau, +853-8113-4949.

THE PRIX IS RIGHT It’s almost the end of the year and if you haven’t had a chance to head over to Macau yet, November is one of the best months to go. One of my favourite events is the 65th Macau Grand Prix on November 15-18. Without a doubt, it’s one of the most prestigious international events on the local Macau calendar. Known for being the only street circuit race in which both car and motorcycle races are held, this three-day event welcomes hundreds of participants from around the world who compete in different categories of motor racing, including single-seaters, touring cars and motorbikes. There are plenty of public stands set up around the city at awesome viewing points and it’s kid-friendly too; just remember to bring along ear protectors as it does get loud. Looking to make a day of it? Check out the hotels along the circuit; the Grand Lapa for instance offers lunch and viewing packages from the hotel rooftop. MOP50-900.visit www.macau.grandprix.gov.mo for details. 52

FOODIE FEST If you’re heading over for the Grand Prix, you should also check out the 18th Macau Food Festival, a favourite foodie event among locals and visitors alike. Held on November 9-25, the theme this year is “global delicacies” in Macau, so expect delicious Asian, European, Mainland Chinese and local dishes, as well as some exciting non-culinary entertainment, such as game booths, live performances and a beer competition. This is easily one of the busiest and most anticipated events of the year, and a great one for the whole family to enjoy. Held near the Macau Tower, the views from Sai Van Lake also happen to be some of the most beautiful in Macau. Free; each stall has its own pricing. For details, visit en.macaotourism.gov.mo.

FIT FAM

with Kate Farr

Feeling stressed? This month, this column is all about finding new ways for the whole family to blow off steam. We’ll be throwing caution to the wind and taking the plunge in Hong Kong’s wild waters, tapping into the art of Zen to find that elusive balance, and throwing shapes like noone’s watching… even though they probably are.

CLOCK ON November is a huge month for music lovers, as Clockenflap returns to the city to turn it up to eleven. With householdname headline sets from Interpol, Khalid and David Byrne over the weekend of November 9-11, you can count on any hipster worth their salt heading to the Central Harbourfront. What you may not know is that, unlike Glastonbury’s infamous boot-sucking mudbaths, Hong Kong’s homegrown music festival is an exceptionally family-friendly affair. Past years have seen a dedicated family area, glitter face-painting booths, interactive art installations, silent disco, children’s entertainers, family DJ workshops, and even free protective earphones for kids who want to join Mum and Dad down in the moshpit. With stroller-friendly access, a location that’s ideal for public transport, reasonably clean (for a festival) toilets, and loads of kid-friendly eats, this is the perfect opportunity to embarrass your kiddos with some enthusiastic parental dance moves. Costs: $1,620 for adult weekend ticket, $890-990 per day; $1,080 for student weekend ticket, $570-640 per day. Up to two children under 12 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult ticket holder.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Wild swimming, where intrepid swimmers take the plunge in ponds, streams or lakes, is already a popular pastime in other countries, but it’s never really taken off in Hong Kong - until now, that is. Bringing the joys of an alfresco dip to us nature-starved Hongkongers, Kembali leads monthly women-only wild swimming groups, with guides introducing little-known freshwater rock pools all over the territory. Kembali are now opening up some of their guided sessions to include kids too, with the next child-friendly meet slated for December 1 in Tseun Wan. The free sessions aim to help participants of all ages reconnect with nature in a like-minded group, so grab your kids and a towel for a swim on Hong Kong’s wild side. Sessions are free of charge. For schedule information, visit kembali.org/upcoming-events. 54

ALL IN THE MIND Enhale is a brand new mediation studio that recently launched in that most un-Zen of locations, Lan Kwai Fong. Offering a full daily schedule of guided mindfulness and meditation sessions, Enhale is also extending its practice to include the whole family. There are regular pre- and postnatal sessions that focus on restorative self-care, along with specialised family workshops, in which kids from 4-10 years old and their parents connect through mindfulness-based arts activities. With schools in the UK, US, Australia and Japan now incorporating morning meditation into lessons to help focus and reduce stress, it’s high time Hong Kong kids found their balance, too. Costs vary per session. For membership and booking information visit enhalems.com

CAN’T LIV WITHOUT

Edie Hu

Edie Hu is one of the founding members of the Splash Foundation, a charity that provides free swimming lessons for domestic workers and underprivileged kids. On November 3, Edie will attempt the HK360, a 45-kilometre open water swim around Hong Kong Island, with the aim of raising money for Splash. It will be her biggest solo challenge to date.

I joined Splash because: I felt that there was an overwhelming need to teach swimming to the underserved community in Hong Kong. What better way to help people who don’t know how to swim by matching them with those who do! By attempting the HK360 swim, I want to: Bring more awareness to Splash and the work that they are doing, whilst showing off the breathtaking beauty of Hong Kong’s coastline. Hopefully by completing this swim I will be able to inspire others to take on big personal goals. Where I work out: In my living room and in the ocean. My favourite workout gear: Right now I am loving the TYR swimsuit. I love the thin straps and how comfortable it is - essential when you’re in the water for hours and hours. All my swimsuits are the same style so I always have a pair of permanent tan lines! What I'm watching on TV: I’ve been watching Modern Family from the very first season and feel so invested in it. Even after 10 seasons I still find it well-written and hilarious. My favourite workout song: “Do or Die” by Afrojack and Thirty Seconds to Mars. Number one item on my bucket list: Swim around Hong Kong! Where I go to get pampered: Ten Feet Tall for a lymphatic drainage massage What I always have in my fridge: Coconut water, kale and dark chocolate. My guilty pleasure: I love anything fried, especially French fries. I reward myself with these everytime I swim more than 10k. 58

My beauty essential: I always need sunscreen as I am regularly out swimming. I use Atomy 50+ for my face and Think Sport 50+ for my body. What I'm reading right now: “The Feather Thief: Beauty, Obsession, and the Natural History Heist of the Century” by Kirk W. Johnson. What health means to me: Health is something I do not take for granted and I am extremely grateful for being healthy. I work hard to maintain it. I was at my least healthy when: When I lived in New York. I was working late in the office and would order delivery with my colleagues on a daily basis.
