In our cover story (p.20), we pick the brains of forward-thinking couples who incorporated creative eco-friendly touches on their big day. From cruciferous bouquets to upcycled decor, they’ve taken smart steps to reduce, reuse and recycle - without sacrificing an ounce of style. For those who’ve just kicked off the planning process, we’ve asked the experts at 3 Degrees Events to outline 10 easy steps for throwing a green wedding (p.27) and shortlisted five vegetarianfriendly caterers (p.30) to take care of your plant-based needs. When the party’s over, follow the travel gurus Compare Retreats to their favourite healthy honeymoon spots (p.54). Wellness-focused couples will love these yoga, fitness and natureoriented escapes around the world. Back here in Hong Kong, we’ve rounded up gorgeous green wedding venues (p.32), all-natural gift ideas (p.16), ethical jewellery ideas (p.14) and a free-flow of summer wedding trends on our Mood Board (p.12). KEEP IT SMALL In a shift toward more intimate affairs, couples are paring back their guest lists. Aside from a more familial vibe, smaller weddings also have practical payoffs when it comes to budgets and logistics.

GAME ON Couples hosting outdoor weddings may want to incorporate some crowd pleasing lawn games - look for bag toss, bocce balls, croquet, life-size Jenga and more. 12

DECADENT DESSERTS Why choose just one giant cake when you can have a dozen tiny bites? Dessert spreads - featuring everything from macarons to bite-sized cupcakes to trifles - should fill you up this season.

STYLISH SUCCULENTS Succulents are this season’s best floral trend. Not only do these desert beauties make for interesting centerpieces, but they also double as excellent guest favours.

Cover Story

Q How did you two get engaged? Ann Yiu: It happened in Geneva, under a tree in front of The Smurfs Building. We were just finishing a two-month backpacking journey through Europe. I found out later that he had actually picked out various other venues for the proposal, but they were too noisy or crowded or just the wrong atmosphere. So the entire time we were traveling, he had been carrying around this tiny box of “bandaids” in his backpack - that’s where he was hiding the ring box - and looking for the right place to ask. Q What details were most important to you? AY: We didn’t want to create too much waste

for just a one-day event. Although we did have some waste in the end, we thought carefully about the environmental impact of every decision. As for general planning, photos were important to us, so we were grateful to find amazing photographers like Wen Hung for our pre-wedding shoots and Studio Oak for the big day. They captured truly heartfelt moments that we hope to relive again and again.

Q Why did you choose Bauhinia Garden? AY: I work as a Nature Education Instructor for the

Natural Network, which promotes green living and nature activities on a farm in Sheung Shui. We love nature, so an outdoor venue was our top choice. We searched online for grassy wedding venues and learned about Bauhinia Garden. Once we saw it, we thought the garden would be perfect. Q How were your personalities reflected? AY: We love DIY crafts, so we made lots of the

wedding decor and props ourselves out of recycled materials. For example, the dreamcatcher backdrop, handmade soaps and lipsticks as guests favours, the illustrations on our invitations.... We also chose the music carefully and hung personal photos all around the venue. Q How did you incorporate eco-friendly elements? AY: First, we rented tableware so that we wouldn’t

It’s also important to control the amount of food to avoid waste. For our flower arrangements, we used vegetables for the bouquets and the corsages, so that we could eat them afterwards. Q How did you decide to carry a cabbage as your bouquet? AY: We wanted to reduce waste in every part

of our wedding, so the cabbage bouquet was a great example. It’s a little bit of a gimmick, but it represents the value of organic and local farming. It’s a beautiful fresh flower and it’s a low-carbon, low-waste option. Two days after the wedding, we actually cooked it in a mixed vegetable pot and enjoyed! electronically. This saved a ton of paper and made sense, given that we were in a different country than many of our guests. With e-invites, we could track who had opened their invite - we chased people who hadn't, as it meant we had an old email address - and guests could reply through our website with their dietary requirements. It made the whole process much simpler.

JT: We also didn't have any disposable cutlery or

plates, our table name signs were in frames that guests could take home, and my dad hand-wrote the place signs on recyclable cards. But our big move was with the flowers. Flowers are often flown in from Kenya or another far-flung location, then used for a matter of hours before being binned. To me, it seemed like a total waste. My friend from school is a florist and I asked her to do our flowers. For our table arrangements, we had potted plants running down two long tables on a bed of moss. We told everyone that they could each take home two plants. Throughout the wedding, they were a real focal point - our photographer captured people putting the pots on their heads. Guests told us they wrangled - good naturedly, I hope! - about who would get which plants.

from ASOS. Nothing was overtly "bridal" and they could all wear these dresses again.

Q How did the potted plants fit the overall vibe? JT: The whole wedding was so green - literally, with

it being outside in the gardens of an English country manor - so the wedding favours being plant pots fit the theme perfectly. And they reflected my love of buying way too many potted plants for our home in Hong Kong! I will admit, though, that I did still have a bouquet. Walking down the aisle carrying a plant pot just wouldn't be quite the same!

Q What was your favourite moment of the day? JT: My favourite moment of the day was my brother

singing in our ceremony. We'd asked him to "lead the songs" because we chose to sing pop songs rather than hymns. He hadn't practised at all, and I was nervous he'd fluff it, but he pulled it out of the bag. He took the spotlight from us... almost! In hindsight... Glad I spent money on: My dress! I blew the budget

but I loved it. Glad I saved money on: Alcohol. We chose a venue

with a no corkage policy, and my mum drove to France to pick up the alcohol which meant we could have a free bar all night. Wish I spent money on: A less annoying caterer! We were attracted by her bottom line, but never again. Wish I saved money on: The string quartet. They were great during our service, but when it rained during our reception they couldn't play anymore, and we'd paid them for three hours.

Pauline Yau & Daniel Ho

Pauline and Daniel first met 14 years ago before reconnecting again in 2016. The pair instantly hit it off and have been inseparable ever since.

Q Why did you choose to have a wedding at sea? Pauline Yau: We always knew that

we didn’t want to have a big, wasteful Chinese banquet dinner. But beyond that, we weren’t really sure what was right for us. Thankfully, Daniel read about FLOAT yacht on Apple Daily. We fell in love with the idea of having a wedding at sea! The boat is so minimalist and simple - we loved that it wasn’t over-the-top. Q What surprised you the most about it? DH: The food was surprisingly good!

We didn’t have high hopes for catering on a boat, but our friends really liked it -

especially the fusion Caesar salad with fermented black bean paste. Q How were your personalities reflected in the wedding? PY: We both wanted something simple

yet different, so the venue was a perfect match. We also chose to have a smaller wedding with roughly 70 of our close family and friends. Daniel and I skipped all the Chinese wedding door games, which can create a lot of waste, and just enjoyed our friends’ company. I also sourced or made most of the decorations, since I’m a visual merchandising stylist.

GREEN GUIDE Keen to throw an eco-friendly bash, but not sure where to start? Janhavi Shah of 3 Degrees Events provides 10 steps for going green on the big day. By Doris Lam

1 Say “yes” to a preloved dress “Wearing a vintage dress - or perhaps your mother’s own wedding gown will reduce your carbon footprint. If the look is no longer in style, hire a seamstresses to update the dress and tailor it to your figure.” TOP TIP: Book an appointment several

months in advance with women’s tailors like Irene Fashion (www. irenefashion.com.hk) in Central.

2 Rent bridesmaids dresses “Sites like LMR Weddings or Yeechoo offer modern, stylish cocktail dresses and gowns that are perfect for bridesmaids.”

3 Host a daytime wedding “From the music to those darling fairy lights, it’s easy to forget how much electricity goes into fueling a big event. For an easy alternative, host your wedding during the day. That way, you can make use of photogenic natural light and cut down on electricity.”

4 Buy seasonal flowers “Work with florists who can recommend seasonal flowers. TOP TIP: Head down to the Prince

Edward flower market to choose your own seasonal flowers. Or try Flannel Flowers (www.flannelflowers.com.hk) for some seasonal expertise.

offer them to guests as favours or donate them to a nonprofit like Petal Delights (facebook.com/ PetalDelights)”

5 Support local farmers

9 Ditch paper invitations

“Discuss farm-to-table dining options with your caterer. There are several farms in Yuen Long that produce fresh, organic veggies.”

“Most invitations are thrown away after the event, resulting in loads of waste. For invites, try PaperlessPost - a site that enables couples to design beautiful e-cards.”

TOP TIP: Local caterers such as

CRFT PIT (www.crft-pit.com) and Invisible Kitchen (www. invisiblekitchen.com) will ensure all produce is fresh and seasonal.

6 Plant power “The most effective way to reduce your wedding’s carbon footprint? Go vegan for a night. If you’re hosting a wedding banquet in Hong Kong, there are plenty of catering options serving up delicious green treats.

7 Choose reusable gift favours “Your guests will love eco-friendly gifts such as homemade jam, potted succulents or fresh herbs.”

TOP TIP: If you have your heart on

mailing paper save-the-dates instead of an e-invite, look into sustainable paper options. You can source recycled - or even plantable “seed paper” that can be grown into flowers or herbs from online outfits such as Bloomin (bloomin.com).

10 Distribute excess food “Encourage guests to take home leftover food or set up composting bins at the reception to avoid food waste.” 3 Degrees Events creates personalised and memorable events across Asia. 3degrees.com.hk.

8 Donate your decor “Instead of letting all your beautiful flowers and decorations go to waste,

ONE FINE DAY

Rico Tsui, chief photographer and creative director of An Ant Capture, shares his favourite moments from Genevieve and Pakman’s destination wedding in England. By Doris Lam

“This was a playful moment when the bridesmaids were on their way to the wedding in the back of a black cab. I like this photo, because it’s so distinctively British.” 44

Photography

“Getting ready! Many brides strive for ‘the perfect wedding look,’ but not Genevieve. She stuck with her signature black eye liner - no better day to be yourself than your big day.”

“Having met as students in England, Genevieve and Pakman had a destination wedding at the Brompton Oratory in London. I wanted to capture this solemn moment - where everyone was listening to the priest - while simultaneously showing how grand and special this church was.”

“This was taken right before Genevieve walked in the church, knowing that Pakman was waiting for her. You can see a lot of contemplation in this picture, as she thought about this new stage of her life. I love taking pictures from a distance, as it allows emotions to be felt instead of being disturbed.” 45

Photography

“I usually research the venues beforehand, especially when it’s a destination wedding. I learned that the oratory has two floors, so I was sure to make good use of it in my photos for a unique perspective.”

“The second you see this picture, you can tell they’re all very good friends. They asked me to take this photo, and I didn’t direct them in any way. They just naturally showed their personalities in the picture.”

“I took a lot of photos of the guests at the wedding. Because of the couple’s background in the fashion industry, the guests all had a great sense of style and looked like they were from London Fashion Week!”

“A moment that captured so many raw emotions. I love capturing pictures that will let couples look back and relive what they felt on the day. So much was happening in the background, but this moment is solely theirs.” This is the first picture of the couple emerging as newlyweds after the ceremony – pure, delightful and full of hope on their faces and for their journey ahead.”

Add oil

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, aromatherapy can help to improve your physical, mental and spiritual well-being. To get started, we ask Bérénice Guyot, the Managing Director of Mességué to give us the lowdown on essential oils. By Kate Springer

Slow it down

If you’re ready to zen out before the big day, head to Fivelements in Sai Kung to really get away from it all. A weekend retreat with the girls might include Balinese-inspired facials, body treatments, and plant-based gourmet meals. Need a mind detox? The retreat also offers yoga and meditation sessions in a beautiful wood-clad yoga room. 81 Tai Chung Hau Rd., Sai Kung, hk.fivelements.org.

Do you personally use essential oils? Bérénice Guyot: “Yes, and they have changed my life immensely. I always kick-start my mornings with oils to make sure the day ahead is a good one! Every morning, I choose one or two essential oils, depending on my mood. When I travel, I always bring along my little box of essential oils so it’s handy.” What are the health benefits? BG: “Essential oils are great plant-based remedies to help protect and support our immune systems, fight against physical ailments, or soothe stress.” Do different oils have different benefits? BG: “Yes, that’s right. Each oil has a different benefit. For example, eucalyptus radiata is great for the respiratory system, while lavender is great for sleep and relaxation. Lemon is amazing for disinfecting, purifying the air, and even getting rid of sticky spots that may be on your floor, wall or shoes!” What’s a great way to get started with essential oils? BG: “For beginners, I recommend starting with an essential oil diffuser. Figure out what types of scents you like, and just enjoy them at home. Later you can move onto essential oil massages. When you want to level up, try using it as food supplements or in your cooking. But, it’s very important to read the instructions before using each oil as not all are meant to be consumed.”

Face the day

How could they help brides? BG: “Wedding planning can be stressful at times, so I recommend using petitgrain (extracted from a bitter orange tree) - it’s uplifting, refreshing, and helps to balance emotions. Oils that are good to include in your pre-wedding beauty regime would be neroli and rose, which is great for rejuvenating the skin and overall wellbeing.”

Unit O, 8/F, King Win Factory Building, 65-67 King Yip St, Kwun Tong, www.bonart-hk.com.

Get you glow on with a Skin Care DIY session at Bonart. During the hands-on workshop, a skincare guru will explain how to make your own all-natural lip balm, hand cream and more.

How We Met

A Hostel

Encounter Cathy Adams and David Talkar’s story began in a hostel dorm room in Krakow, Poland. While unpacking, Cathy dropped a bumper packet of tampons on the floor. She was mortified; David, oblivious. He invited Cathy out for a drink (she paid). It was 2008. Cathy was a language assistant in Toulouse, France, while David was splitting time between London and Norway for work. That first drink turned into plenty more and, three years later, they moved in together in London (they split the bill this time). Days before moving to Hong Kong at the start of 2015, David proposed on a walk around Ashtead Woods, a park on the outskirts of southwest London. They spent the next year settling into new jobs, exploring Hong Kong - and planning a London Underground-themed wedding from 6,000 miles away. They tied the knot in Central London, before screaming their way around town on a red bus tour and drinking dodgy liquor at the reception overlooking the River Thames. They split the bill for that, too.
