It’s All Fun & Games Your wedding doesn’t have to be a buttoned-up, formal affair. Increasingly, couples are expressing their quirkier sides with creative venues, nostalgic bites, and even visits from their favourite Disney characters. In our cover story (p.18), we’ve talked with Hong Kong couples who expressed themselves in unique ways - from a Disneythemed party, to a Scottish social shindig, and a floating ceremony on Hong Kong harbour. Each couple incorporated meaningful elements for a totally unconventional result. Curious about Hong Kong’s most playful venues? We’ve rounded up quirky choices for one-of-a-kind weddings, including a crazy golf course, Ocean Park’s Grand Aquarium, Potato Head’s Music Room, and more (p.28). The wedding inspiration continues with our Mood Board (p.10) where it’s all things winter and Try Something (p.56) where a few unusual wedding trends might inspire new ideas. We’ve also talked to a professional makeup artist to learn about the best makeup tricks for brides on p.46, traveled to eco-friendly wedding venues on p.52, and caught up with a Hong Kong-French couple to hear all about their romantic wedding in southern Spain (p.48). As always, we’ve wrapped up with How We Met (p.58) - this time chronicling a modern love story that kicked off at Drop, as many do! Remember: have fun!

ore and more brides are opting to wear the qipao, or cheongsam as you may know it, during their Chinese tea ceremony and banquets instead of the more traditonal “kwas”. However, it is definitely not an easy task to find the perfect qipao, especially at an accessible price point. Noticing the gap in the market, fashion buyer turned designer Julie Liu founded Hong Kong based qipao brand, Qipology in 2017. The brand specializes in custom made qipaos for the modern day bride by bringing the “cool” back into qipaos, reinventing them so they are contemporary, wearable and sexy at the same time. Each piece is tailor made based on the client’s preferences, needs and budgets. Prices begin from HKD 3,000 and the process usually takes around 1 - 2 months. Qipology will be showcasing at the Hong Kong Wedding Fair in HKCEC (Booth Z10) between December 14 – 16, 2018.

Cover Story
Zoe & Melvin
Zoe Belhomme and Melvin Byres’ wedding at The Upper Garden in Clearwater Bay last November was filled with fun touches, from the mini fish ‘n’ chips canapes to the ceilidh (a traditional Scottish social). Q How did you two decide where to get hitched? Zoe Belhomme: I am an only child, so I am close with my
parents who live in the UK. When we first got engaged, I panicked about where we would get married because my father hadn’t been on a plane for more than 20 years. I didn’t want to host a wedding that would require him to travel, since I knew it would make him uncomfortable, so we started looking in the UK. None of the venues felt special to us, however. Q What happened next? ZB: My dad called me while I was standing on Orchard
Road in Singapore. My dad doesn’t own a mobile phone, so the fact that he called me overseas was a big deal. I thought someone had died! He told me that if I wanted to get married in Hong Kong, he would be there. This was a very emotional moment for me - I knew we had to hold the celebration in Hong Kong, so I could show my dad the life we had built here. Q How did you discover the venue? ZB: As we work in the events industry, we knew a lot of
the venues but this one was new to us. Our friend and groomsman, Malcolm Loudon, was at Venuehub at the time and The Upper Garden was just coming on his books. He took us to it and the conversation began about creating our wedding!

ice and introducing people to each other. Since we had so many people from different places, the ceilidh seemed like a great way to bring them all together. Q How did you balance the budget? ZB: We went without some traditional wedding elements
- like a cake or favours - to prioritize things that were important to us, such as great food. We chose simple floral arrangements, because the venue was so natural and beautiful. Q Any major mistakes? ZB: Only one major mess-up that I still get teased for...
When planning, I guessed at the number of toilets we would need but missed the mark completely. Luckily the bushes weren’t far away! Q What did your guests enjoy the most? ZB: To this day, people talk about our food. We kept
it casual and had our “starters” as canapés during cocktails. These weren’t your normal canapés - we had sushi, mini wagyu burgers, and mini fish ‘n’ chips. When we sat down we had a fish platter with lobsters and prawns and a meat platter with steak and ribs - all served with veggies and salad. We started with champagne and espresso martinis, then had an open bar for the rest of night to keep the party going! In hindsight... Glad I spent on: Great food and drinks Glad I saved on: Flowers and favours Wish I spent on: A videographer Wish I saved on: Pre- and post-wedding activities Q How did you showcase your personalities? ZB: We were legally married a few months prior to the
wedding so I asked my aunt to be our celebrant. She told our story with first-hand honesty, which was amazing. Melvin grew up in Hong Kong to Scottish parents, so we we incorporated the Scottish tradition of “oathing stones” in the ceremony, as well as a ceilidh. Q What’s a ceilidh?

Romain & Sandra
Frenchman Romain Jahiel and Hongkonger Sandra Teo had a three-part celebration a Chinese ceremony at the Four Seasons, a floating ceremony on The Knot of Love boat, and a French banquet at Bouchon.
Q What did you envision for your wedding? Sandra Teo: We wanted the wedding to be nontraditional, enjoyable and simple. While planning, our first priority was our guests - we wanted them to feel comfortable and enjoy themselves with an unrushed, relaxed wedding. Weddings shouldn’t be focused only on the bride and the groom! Q Why did you choose a boat for the ceremony? Romain Jahiel: We had three venues in total - the Knot of
Love was where we held the ceremony. Since Sandra and I love the sea, and we often go diving together, I proposed to her on a small island in Coron, in Palawan. After we visited the boat, we found it to be original and practical - all we had to do was choose the wedding date, time, food, drinks, and confirm the guest list. 22
Cover Story
Q What did you love most about it? ST: The view of the harbour was so special for us. It witnessed
our love blossom in Hong Kong, where we met and now live together. Also, the boat was beautifully decorated, and the blue sky and skyscrapers as a backdrop felt perfectly modern. Q How did you incorporate cultural touches? RJ: We held only one wedding in Hong Kong, so we wanted to share a bit of our cultural backgrounds with our guests. In the morning, we had a tea ceremony with our parents to reflect Chinese family-based values. In the evening, we enjoyed the culinary and social aspects of a French wedding. Q Any particularly memorable moments on the boat? ST: When I was walking toward the altar with my father, the boat hit a small wave, so we lost our balance slightly. It felt like I was a child again, with my papa arm-in-arm, and it made the guests laugh too. Then Romain held my hand firmly when my papa passed me to him to help me keep my balance. Thanks to the little wave, I had this small moment to appreciate my relationships with these two men, at this special time.

Katie & Terry Disney enthusiasts Katie Chan and Terry Tsoi threw a magical ‘do at Hong Kong Disneyland last June.
Q How long have you two been together? Terry Tsoi: We got together in 2003, so that’s 15 years!
We met in boarding school in England where we saw each other in class all the time. We ended up being study buddies. Q Why Disneyland? TT: Katie always thought of Disneyland as a special, magical, fantastical place - it feels like a fairytale. Ever since we learned it was possible, back in 2005 or 2006, we wanted to have our wedding at Disney. It also made sense to pick Hong Kong, since our families live here. Q Any characters make an appearance? Katie Chan: Stitch is our favourite character, so we wanted
to have him at the wedding. However, Stitch could only come in a narrow window - between the ceremony and 24

the reception. If we were late, we’d lose our chance to take pictures with him, so timing had to be exact. Then, during the banquet, we had appearances from more Disney characters such as Donald Duck and Daisy. Q Any complications? TT: We just needed more time! Katie needed to change her clothes between events, and we wanted to go to the hotel gardens after the ceremony for wedding photos. But to pack in everything we wanted to do, the afternoon felt rushed. Q Did you incorporate any special wedding activities? KC: We had a lucky draw, because we thought it’d be
fun! We picked three photos from the prewedding photo shoot, which was also at Hong Kong Disneyland. We asked our guests to vote on which of the three was the best - this vote then became their lucky draw ticket later. When dinner started, we counted the votes and revealed the prettiest picture. Then we did a lucky draw amongst those who voted for the winning photo. Two of our guests won tickets to the park. Q What was your favourite moment? KC: The inspiration for our dinner reception came from the
scene in Beauty and the Beast when the servants sing “Be Our Guest.” The hotel recreated this scene with lighting effects, music and food. Q What details did your guests enjoy most? KC: Our guests said that the food was great - especially
the Mickey-shaped coffee jelly - and the characters from Disney really made them feel immersed in the wedding.
In hindsight… Glad I spent on: The Disney characters - thanks Stitch,
Donald, and Daisy for coming! Glad I saved on: A blue tux to go with Katie’s yellow reception dinner dress - we really could have really been Beauty and the Beast! A TOUCH OF
SPARKLE Hong Kong jewellery designer Austy Lee shares his inspiration for his Fall/Winter collection, and offers advice on how to select the perfect piece of jewellery.
26
Q What is the inspiration for your latest collection? A: The keyword for the inspiration of my new collection is “psychedelic.” As you can see, it is full of radiant colors, including fluorescent hues such as violet, red and green. Right now I’m obsessed with flowers and plants - particularly orchids - and so you will find floral motifs in my collection from time to time - for instance the padparacha sapphire flower ring, which embodies blooming flowers in the spring. I also love animals and used to have a lovely sparrow back in the day. These sparrow earrings vividly reflect the side view of two sparrows perching on a branch.
Q You are well known for some extremely intricate designs. What items in your collection to you think would be suitable for gifting? A: We do have some entry-level pieces that make perfect gifts. For example, our South Sea white pearl earrings and rings are simple, easy to wear and elegant. Or you can take a look at these open-end rings (above right). We have Emerald and Diamond rings, and Rubellite and Diamond rings to choose from. They can be tailor-made with different gold and stone combinations. You are more than welcome to stop by our shop to tell us what unique combination you like, and we can tailor-make it for you.
Q Can you give us some tips on how to pick a piece of jewellery for a gift? A: There are a few tricks for gifting a jewellery piece to a special one. Firstly, you’ll want to select something that’s easy to wear so that they can can wear it on daily basis. Having a piece that they will keep in a safe box forever and never wear is a waste of both your effort and money. Secondly, you can find inspiration from his or her birthstone. For example, the birthstone for June is pearl, and September’s is sapphire. Not only is it a unique and meaningful gift, it also shows you made an effort to pick something special. Last but not least, you probably have to secretly "investigate" the gift receiver's ring/wrist size, although we are always happy to resize it for you.
Q You also accept custom orders. Can you tell us more about that process? A: For custom-made pieces, the first and most important step is always to sit down and chat with the client. It's essential to understand the purpose behind each and every piece so I can better fulfill the client's requirements. Then, I'll draw up some sketches for the client to choose from and amendments will be made upon request. For complex pieces we can show the client the initial jewellery mold to ensure the final piece will perfectly reflect the client's vision. The starting price depends on several elements: the size of the particular piece, the quality and the size of the main gemstone, as well as the complexity level for manufacturing the piece. In general I would say the starting price would be around HK$10,000.

ONE FINE DAY
Wedding photographer Tony Leung relives the wedding of Zoie and Chris, which took place at The Upper House and the Aberdeen Marina Club, with these behind-the-scenes shots. By Doris Lam
“Zoie and her mother were admiring their wedding jewellery when I captured this tender moment. Many Chinese families rarely show affection, but weddings always seem to set the stage for loving interactions.”
“I noticed the beautiful embroidery on the insoles of Zoie’s traditional Chinese wedding shoes and I wanted to show off the details. Photographers usually focus on taking photos of the bride’s qipao or a Western wedding dress, but these shoes caught my eye.” 40
Photography
“Usually, the bride’s earrings are hidden behind her hair but, at this particular angle, Zoie’s earrings caught the light beautifully.”
“All the groomsmen were all dressed up in traditional Chinese attire to match Chris, the groom. They were all laughing and teasing each other as they headed through the corridor of the hotel to fetch the bride in her hotel room. I noticed that some of the men didn’t like posing for photos, so I made sure to capture candid moments without disturbing them.”
“In Chinese, ‘囍’ (meaning ‘double happiness’) is a symbol of marriage. In this corner of the room, the words seemed to frame Zoie as she chatted happily with her mother and her soon-to-be mother-in-law.”
“As the entire family sat down for a group photo, a little boy suddenly captured everyone’s attention as he ran into the shot, unaware that a photo was being taken. Everyone started laughing - it was a sweet moment.” 41
Photography
“This was a rare quiet moment, as the bride admired the breathtaking view of Hong Kong. I wanted to make use of the big windows at The Upper House by using a top angle to show more of Hong Kong’s high-rise buildings. I asked Zoie to sit on the ledge, while I carefully arranged her dress to show off its many layers.”
“After Zoie changed out of her traditional Chinese wedding dress, we took photos outside the hotel. If you look carefully, you can see that this isn’t the same dress that the she wore to the wedding ceremony - it’s a totally different dress that she chose for pictures.”
“After the morning preparations, the bridal party moved to the Aberdeen Marina Club for the ceremony. As Chris nervously waited for Zoie at the end of the aisle, his best man smiled at the camera - totally unplanned.”
“As the newly wedded couple walked arm-in-arm, their guests tossed flower petals into the air. Since it was getting dark, I adjusted my shutter speed in order to capture the joyful movement.” www.flowerspacepro.com

T R AV E L
Spanish SOIREE
A few years after hitting it off at Club 71 in Hong Kong, Kim Ing and Xav Maisondieu tied the knot in their happy place: Seville, Spain. 48
T R AV E L
Q So how did you two hit it off? Kim Ing: Xav and I met in Hong Kong - it was a chance meeting at Club 71. It’s known as the cheapest bar in Hong Kong and where all the French hang out. Xav offered to buy me a drink, and I insisted he buy one for all seven of my friends! It’s a rare occasion that we were both compelled to get to know a total stranger, but something pulled us together. Q Why a destination wedding in southern Spain? KI: We chose Seville because my family has had a house there for over 15 years. It’s our happy place surrounded by memories of holidays, quiet time with family and a break from our Hong Kong routine. As a city, Seville is so beautiful that every time I return, I wonder why it’s taken me so long.
Q Which venue did you choose? KI: My best friend Macarena, who lives in Andalusia, suggested Hacienda Molinillos to me when I told her that Xav and I were getting married. She simply told me: “I know the perfect place - it’s so you!” Q What were the most important details? KI: We really wanted to celebrate the best of Andalusia and share it with our loved ones. On the Friday before the wedding, we kicked off our celebration with a private flamenco show at the Museo Del Baile. In addition, all of our catering showcased traditional dishes from the area, as well as wine and fino (fortified wine) from Jerez. Q Any extra special touches? KI:We really wanted our guests to feel special and welcome, so we left welcome notes at everyone’s hotel with a little bottle of Tio Pepe [a brand of sherry] to get the party started! 49
T R AV E L
Q How were your cultures reflected in the wedding? KI: We had a Chinese wedding ceremony in Hong Kong in November, so I wore my Chinese wedding dress for our Friday celebrations. We also had a large portion of guests who spoke French - Xav is from Paris - so we created a fully bilingual wedding with all notes, details, invitations and signs in both French and English. Q What were some of the challenges of planning a destination wedding? KI: The difficulty was planning from Hong Kong - both Xav and I work full-time jobs and travel 50
extensively. We hardly had time to see each other, let alone sit down and make decisions. We had to be really decisive and not linger too much. At one point, we were so overloaded that we printed all our wedding invitations with the wrong date! We thought “oh well”… and sent them anyway... everyone would know what we meant! Q Any major mistakes on the day itself? KI: A few little ones that only I would have noticed… like our guitarists. They forgot to play the song I had chosen for the moment that my father and I walked down the aisle. I had dreamed of the expression

Our catering company went a step further and created an entire vegetable garden where everyone could pick snacks it was a huge hit.

A winter wedding can be chilly, but if you’re not into the idea of wearing a cape or a longsleeved dress, layer up with your favourite leather jacket. Adding a touch of edginess, a biker jacket or bomber will juxtapose your gown for instant glam.

Instead of a conventional bouquet, many brides are opting instead for a simple, single bloom. These solostem bouquets can be styled to look subtle or dramatic and, in any case, they’re definitely budget-friendly.

Change
it up
Lots of Hong Kong brides change up their gowns on the big day perhaps wearing a cheongsam in the morning, followed by a western dress in the evening. Now grooms are getting in on the action, switching from a formal jacket for the ceremony to a more casual ensemble for the reception and after-party.
Java time
Whether you’re having a church ceremony or a full outdoor event, your guests could probably use a hot cup of coffee in between the big moments. Elevate your coffee cart with beans from your favourite roaster or have a barista on hand to pour trendy flat whites.

WILD CARD
Take flight
Have you watched the viral “flying veil” videos trending online? Originating in China, the trend sees a veil magically float through the air and land on the bride’s head as she walks down the aisle. It might not be your style, but you can’t argue with the theatrics!

How We Met
A night to remember
A chance encounter at a nightclub led to a long-distance romance. By Doris Lam
B
oth raised in Hong Kong, Heanney and Conrad Banks met at Drop, a nightclub in Lan Kwai Fong, over the Christmas holidays in 2011. At the time, Heanney was living in the UK and was home visiting family; Conrad was a pilot, based in Hong Kong and travelling the world. Conrad hit on Heanney at the bar and the two later shared their first kiss in the strobe of club lights. They exchanged numbers, then parted ways without any expectations. But Conrad couldn’t stop thinking about Heanney.

He called her the next morning to invite her for dinner at Oolaa. A bit hungover and casually dressed, Heanney was blown away when he arrived looking polished in a suit. As the Christmas holidays came to an end, Heanney returned to England and Conrad resumed life as a pilot. For the next nine months, the two spent every free moment messaging each other, and Heanney eventually relocated to Hong Kong to give romance a shot. Six years later, Heanney and Conrad were lounging in bed, sharing
a heartfelt conversation about the fragility of life. In the spur of the moment, Conrad ditched his plans to propose during an upcoming holiday in Phuket and asked Heanney to marry him on the spot. In June this year, Heanney and Conrad tied the knot surrounded by 49 of their closest family members and friends at The Beach Villa in Bali, where they once again stole kisses on the dance floor - this time as a married couple.
