Designed by local stationer The Lion Rock Press, these “No Plastic Mm Goi” bottles and tumblers will keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours, and hot for up to 12. Already known for its use of local and MSG-free ingredients, Sohofama has created a menu of traditional and comforting Chinese favourites that are entirely plant-based. We kicked off with some delicious steamed black truffle and mushroom dumplings ($88) and a refreshing cold garlic cucumber starter ($58), before tucking into some mapo tofu ($98), kung pao-style king oyster mushrooms ($128) and Sichuan mala fried rice ($128). Dishes range from around $38-$58 for starters and small plates through to $128 for main courses, and are perfect for sharing. PMQ, 35 Aberdeen St., Central, 2858-8238, www.sohofama.com.

WORKOUT

Reformer Pilates for Beginners at Anhao Wellness The Buzz: Founded by Estelle Bertin, a French national gymnast, certified personal trainer and Pilates instructor, Anhao is a sports and wellness coaching studio just off Caine Road. The sun-drenched studio offers lots of different classes, including Pilates, yoga and personal training. We tried the reformer class for beginners. The Class: The 55-minute class was run by Estelle herself. After

some simple warm-ups on the floor, we moved onto the reformer. Estelle started with some simple exercises so we could get used to the positions and resistance from the machine. However we quickly progressed and did between five and eight reps of each move - most of which were designed to improve our core strength and mobility. A lot of focus was placed on technique rather than tempo, and Estelle was always on hand to provide feedback and support. The Verdict: With a maximum of four people per reformer session

you will always receive lots of attention at Anhao. While it’s not a class to get the heart racing, it is a great option if you’re coming back from injury and need to build strength, or you want to add some more toning and core work to your regular exercise routine. Anhao also specialises in pre- and post-pregnancy classes. The Cost: If you haven’t been before a trial session is $250. After that, a one-off class is $350 but you can also buy 10 classes for $3,200 or 20 classes for $5,800. 4F, Sunny Sky Centre, 5 Ladder St., Sheung Wan, 6397-8284, www.anhao-wellness.com.

PRODUCT

Acti-Tape The Buzz: Developed with the support of

leading physiotherapists, Acti-Tape aids recovery from sports injuries. Applied correctly, it supports joints and muscles and enhances sports performance without affecting your range of motion. Application: We often experience knee pain

during exercise, and so we were keen to see if the tape would alleviate our symptoms during a long trail run. We followed the simple strappng instructions on the ActiTape website, and instantly felt support against inward and outward over-rotation. The Verdict: The tape was very easy and

comfortable to apply, and if you don’t quite get it in the right spot first time you can easily move it without losing stickiness. We really benefitted from having support around the knee, and didn’t experience any discomfort over a 30k run. It was also very effective at protecting joints and ligaments during high-impact sports such as netball and rugby. The tape is soft and stretchy, meaning it’s comfortable and doesn’t irritate or affect performance, and it’s super versatile so it can be used on a whole range of body parts including the shoulder, elbow, back and ankle. Acti-Tape comes in 5-metre rolls and in two different widths depending on your needs. There are also 10 different colours to choose from. $129 per roll at www.acti-tape.com.

Work/Life Coworking spaces are revolutionising the way we work. Inspiring interior designs, a sense of community and wellnessfocused initiatives mean that large and small businesses alike are clamouring for a desk. Zoe Belhomme takes a look at how the coworking scene is putting wellbeing front and centre.

W

e spend a lot of time working. The average office worker spends more than nine hours every day (roughly 1,800 hours a year) seated and staring at a computer screen. Add uninspiring grey cubicles, harsh strip lighting, unhealthy vending machines and rushed lunches, and it’s no wonder work makes us sick. In fact, according to a study published by BUPA Hong Kong in 2016, sick leave accounts for HK$8.9 billion in lost productivity, while working while sick accounts for a loss of productivity equal to HK$30.6 billion. Could coworking spaces - business communities that place value on workplace wellness, fun, work-life balance and networking be the answer? While they may have once been considered a fad, coworking spaces are here to stay, and demonstrate one of the biggest shifts in the work market today. Globally, coworking is booming. According to research firm Statista, the industry grew 71 percent annually from 2007 to 2015 and is projected to grow a further 68 percent from 2016 to 2018.

What’s the appeal? For larger companies, a workplace that emphasises a sense of wellbeing, balance and community - plus a dynamic, socially inspired setting - can increase productivity and job satisfaction. For freelancers and solopreneurs, a shared space can combat feelings of isolation. Working with like-minded people and fellow entrepreneurs can offer substantial mental wellbeing benefits in the long term.

WeWork, the world’s biggest coworking space provider with more than 160,000 members globally, was the first to start blurring the lines between work and play. The free beer on tap and bottomless fresh brewed coffees were almost unheard of perks in the shared office spaces of old, but they have practically become the norm today. In fact, even the biggest corporates are moving their staff to WeWork, attracting names such as HSBC. Andrew Connell, HSBC’s Regional Head of Digital, 19

Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Asia-Pacific, moved his team to WeWork’s Causeway Bay offices for the duration of a large project. “Creating the right environment for our staff… is important to us as we continue to attract, develop and invest in the talent we need to meet our digital ambitions,” he says. On the health side, WeWork Wellness began as a pilot programme in early 2016 in New York City, offering roughly 10 different types of classes, including yoga, HIIT, kickboxing and meditation. While the full service is not yet available in Hong Kong, WeWork does host regular yoga and meditation sessions, and is looking to introduce more over the coming months. Bex Sowden, a sponsorship and marketing consultant moved into WeWork 12 months ago and found it's had a positive impact on her work life balance. "I don't feel chained to my desk or get as stressed as I used to because I have more freedom and flexibility in my workday. Not only do I feel more empowered and motivated, I love that I can meet and socialise with people within and outside of my industry on a daily basis through the WeWork network."

It’s important to unplug, and stay physically and mentally healthy, “says Jared King, Country Manager at The Hive. “Our members encounter stress in a way that is unique to entrepreneurs and startups. This is why we make an effort to create a space that brings a little bit of balance to their lives and allows them to find wellness at work.” In fact, The Hive is the only coshared working space to have a “Resting Room” - a private and comfortable room that can be booked out for relaxation, meditation or even a power nap. Q. I have flat feet and have suffered from foot pain for years. What options do I have for treating this and relieving the discomfort? Flat feet-related symptoms are usually due to mechanical problems, as the foot rolls in (overpronation) with every step you walk or run. As the arch rolls or falls in, the inner muscles of the foot become overused with time. This will present as pain on the medial heel or mid-arch of the foot, sometimes with swelling. The pain may further develop to the knee and lower back due to disturbance in one’s body balance. The common initial treatment is to have a medial supporting arch insole to correct the imbalance. Tailor-made insoles usually work well for young patients with early symptoms, while physiotherapy and stretching can help strengthen the muscle in the foot and relieve the pain. If the patient has been suffering with flat feet for a long period, resulting in structural injury or degeneration, shoe insoles and exercises may not help much and surgical options can be considered.

Q. How can surgery help with flat feet? As the arches of the foot collapse, it can lead to inflamed tendons from overuse, and later, the foot and ankle joint degenerate. Flat feet can run in families or develop as we age. Surgery aims to correct the bone alignment in the foot, as well as repair the injured soft tissues. Seas of

Green

Lush forests, ice-blue rivers and the imposing Julian Alps - here's why Kate Springer explored Slovenia’s Soča River Valley on four wheels.

W

inding around the forested hillsides of western Slovenia, my husband and I have the roads all to ourselves - a good thing, since we keep stopping abruptly to admire the views. A dramatic valley stretches below and the Julian Alps rise in the distance. In the centre of the scene, the Soča River swirls through the valley, so icy blue it gives me goosebumps. We’ve just begun a road trip through the Soča Valley, about two hours northwest of Slovenia’s capital of Ljubljana, and we’re already thinking up ways to permanently relocate. Why here? For starters, it’s one of

28

the greenest places on earth. Slovenia was named the world’s fifth greenest country by Yale University last year. And back in 2008, the Soča Valley was named a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN), a nod to its eco preservation and sustainable tourism development. The set of 2008’s Narnia (Prince Caspian edition), the peaceful valley is teeming with natural wonders, from the Boka Waterfall (the country’s tallest) to the Triglav National Park, Great Soča Gorge, and snow-capped Julian Alps (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve). There are no international hotels or highways - just quaint agritourism

guesthouses and a few upscale chalets to choose from. It’s the kind of place that rises with the sun and has been doing “farm-totable” dining long before urbanites took to the trend. It’s next to impossible to explore the area’s narrow roads and hairpin turns in anything but a little hatchback - so that’s just what we did. But first, we unpacked our bags at Chalets Nebesa (meaning “heaven” in Slovenian). Hidden away up on a hill overlooking the town of Kobarid, the family-run property provides four private cottages overlooking the entire area, as well as extensive sauna facilities, complimentary local snacks, and a cellar full of local wine. “The Soča Valley is the best place to experience the Slovenian countryside, with its agricultural heritage, hay bales, cows, and farm houses,” says Katja Roš, who runs Chalets Nebesa with her husband. “Everyone should go zip-lining, whitewater rafting, canyoning, paragliding, kayaking, biking, hiking, fishing… or just walking through the wild nature and pastures.” Close to town, we follow the Kobarid Historical Trail, which runs alongside the impossibly turquoise Soča River, inside the Great Soča Gorge. A path veering off to the right leads us to a series of wooden planks

and stepping stones that dot the river bank. The stones lead to a walking path, hugging the canyon wall. As we trace the craggy rock face, we hear a rumble and feel a mist. Then the waterfall comes into view. The Kozjak Waterfall is not the country’s highest - that title goes to the 144-metre Boka Waterfall in the nearby town of Bovec - but the oft-empty cavern provides a few moments of solitude. Drawing from the natural bounty, the region is also known for its food fresh cheese from nearby Tolmin village, homemade nettle ravioli, and grilled river trout make an appearance at nearly every meal. These local ingredients have paved the way for more contemporary restaurants to thrive too. Hisa Franko, helmed by chef Ana Roš (recently crowned the World’s Best Female Chef), is one of the biggest success stories. The award-winning restaurant charms diners with its homey atmosphere, downto-earth staff, and whimsical surprises (like fermented cheese lollipops and sourdough made from fermented apple peels). Roš works with a mix of local purveyors, from mushroom foragers to cheesemongers - and her husband Valter Kramar is an established sommelier with a penchant for collecting lesser-known Slovenian varieties. The food alone is worth a road trip, but the journey isn’t complete without visiting

the Julian Alps. “The most scenic drive starts in the valley and traces the Soča River, through the Julian Alps, following the 50 hairpin turns of the Vršič Pass,” says Katja Roš (who happens to be chef Ana’s mother). “You will want to stop at least 10 times to see the amazing scenery, the emerald colour of the Soča river - its pools, waterfalls, canyons... the drive is an experience in itself.” She’s right - it’s a slow, photogenic ascent, the roads hugged by trees with viewpoints every few kilometres. Up in the mountains, all part of Triglav National Park, there’s easy access to fly fishing, rock climbing, and the 750-kilometre-long Alpe Adria hiking trail, which passes through the intersection of Austria, Italy and Slovenia. Winding down the southern side

30

of Triglav National Park, two idyllic lakes sit in the shadow of the Alps: Lake Bled, home to a postcard-worthy castle and the dramatic Vintgar Gorge, with wooden walkways that follow the river below. Nearby is Lake Bohinj, where the 78-metre-high Slap Savica waterfall thunders. The latter sees fewer tourists and a generally more peaceful atmosphere, but you hardly have to choose since they’re just 30 minutes apart. “Slovenia is small and easy to explore. Most of the best natural attractions are clustered close together in the western half of the country,” says Roš. “This is where cattle roam and local people tell their stories. But the best things are away from main highways and you need a car to see them.”

Getting there

There are several airports nearby, including the capital of Ljubljana, about an 1.5 hours by car and Trieste, near Venice. Driving makes it a breeze to explore Slovenia’s lush countryside and windy mountain roads.

FEEL-GOOD ADVENTURES

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE A new project from respected resort designer Bill Bensley, the Shinta Mani Foundation, and Cambodia’s Wildlife Alliance, Shinta Mani Wild promises to take adventurous travelers on a safari escape. Set to open by mid-2018, the eco-focused tented camp project is located southwest of Siem Reap in a private nature sanctuary that borders Kirirom, Bokor, and Cardamom National Parks. Perched on the side of a rushing river, the Khmer-inspired accommodations provide easy access to treks, rafting, and guided safaris - where there’s a great chance of spotting fauna such as wild elephants, tigers and bears. Can’t wait until 2018? The Shinta Mani Group is also launching 10 Bill Bensley-designed “Angkor” villas in Siem Reap this November, should a trip to Cambodia be in your near future. shintamani.com.

Every month seems to bring a new “workation” retreat - programs that enable digital nomads to travel from country to country without the logistical headaches. But one in particular caught my eye: Venture with Impact is not just about working and traveling - this social enterprise emphasizes skill-based volunteer projects so you can travel, work, and give back to the community. Co-founded by Ann Davis - who traveled to more than 40 countries after after surviving brain cancer - the various programmes provide accommodation, a workspace and a personalized volunteer program to suit your professional skills. The only catch? You’ll need to be able to travel for a minimum of one month at a time. If you're not quite a digital nomad yet, not to worry: the group’s first Asia program (in Chiang Mai, Thailand) launches in April 2018, so there’s plenty of time to go wireless. One-month programmes from $1,250, including accommodation, Wi-Fi, volunteer placement, activities, and 24-7 staff support. www.venturewithimpact.org

FIT FAM with Kate Farr

Sound the klaxon and jingle those bells! The festive season is upon us and we’re gearing up for C-Day with some fun and festive happenings the whole fam can enjoy.

WHAT’S THE CATCH? The festive season can be a stressful time of year, particularly if you’re the one tasked with running all over the city ensuring that everyone’s Christmas list is ticked off, writing cards to long-lost aunts and checking final postage dates to obscure destinations. Enter Catch, whose pamper playdate events are designed to give mentally drained mums a chance to catch their breath and enjoy some spoiling while someone else keeps the little ones entertained. Past events have featured mini-massages and wine for mums, while kids enjoyed supervised activities and plenty of safe space to roam. Aside from the pamper playdates, Catch also partners with spas and salons to offer regular “happy hour” deals during weekdays, enabling you to max out your relaxation, not your budget. Pamper playdates cost $450 for one adult and one child. For upcoming events see catchapp.com.hk.

SING IT BACK Fancy a night out without the kids while supporting the community? The Helena May hosts its sixth annual carol concert on Friday December 8, with proceeds donated to the Society For Community Organization (SoCo). This adult-only event promises a relaxed evening of canapés, carols and a few drinks, with the overarching aim of assisting SoCo in their work promoting equality and rights for all of Hong Kong’s citizens. This year’s event is sponsored by The Lion Rock Press, and with the Helena May pulling out all the stops when it comes to decking the halls, this is bound to be a fun way to kick off the festive season. Tickets cost $600 per person. Buy online at ticketflap.com.

HEART-SHAPED BOX The annual Box Of Hope campaign wraps up and delivers a little love to some of Asia’s most underprivileged children, and is a great introduction for little ones to the concept of charitable giving. The concept is simple - fill an empty shoebox with unused little gifts, for example a bouncy ball, toy car and colouring pencils; add in some hygiene essentials like soap, a comb, and a toothbrush and toothpaste, and you have a much-appreciated gift for a child in need. Boxes should contain a good balance of items that are educational, practical, but also plain old fun, and there are content guidelines available on the website. The campaign also runs an annual box decorating competition for kids, with Bookazine sponsoring this year’s prize for the most creatively adorned gifts. Time to break out the glitter glue and felt tip pens and make a mess all over the kitchen table for a great cause! Box Of Hope collection week runs from November 6-10. A full list of drop-off locations is available at boxofhope.org. Kate Farr is the co-founder of writing and editing agency Editors’ Ink (editorsinkhk.com). CAN’T LIV WITHOUT

Angie Ng model and indoor cycling instructor at XYZ

 Last plane trip I took: To Verona, Italy. I was there to be shot in a fashion spread for a magazine, and also to photograph some girls backstage at a fashion show. It was refreshing to be behind the lens, not just in front of it.

 What I’m watching on TV:  Last treat I bought for myself:

MasterChef Australia. I love cooking and Masterchef is such an inspiration.

An ear cuff from APM Monaco. I like how it can look edgy with streetwear but super glam in evening wear.

 Where I work out: XYZ and Pure Yoga. I also train at Tamar Park with Lauren White from HIT45, and I do martial arts with Andrew Pong - a martial artist and actor - in Causeway Bay Sports Ground. I like variety to make sure I work all kinds of muscles.

 What I always have in my fridge: Koh Coconut Pink Baby coconut water. I have it after a workout.

 My beauty essentials: I can’t live without the Ultra Face Cream by Kiehl’s, Eye Concentrate by La Mer; and the Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask by Fresh.

 Favourite workout track: "Thriller: Steve Aoki remix." It’s a super funky and familiar old-school tune with a fresh remix.

 Favourite app: Blinkist. It summarises books in a nutshell, and if something interests me I’ll buy the book and read it in depth. It’s my MTR app to go.

 Where I go to get pampered: Back home to Malaysia to be with my family. Find Angie on Instagram @angiengcl 42

 What I’m reading: "Ikigai" by Hector Garcia. Ikigai is the art of doing something with supreme focus and joy. Being busy and non-stop is a common trait for us in Hong Kong, the concept of ikigai is finding happiness in that "business." It has changed my perspective on everything I do.
