EDITOR’S LETTER
KEEP THE TIPPLE Ever wake up bleary-eyed on a Sunday, feeling like you’ve wasted a precious weekend, thanks to the excesses of the night before? We’ve all been there, but increasingly, many of us are now saying “no thanks” to booze. But not because of a fear of dependence or an unhealthy relationship with drink; it’s simply not serving us anymore. While I’m personally not quite ready to give up a cheeky cocktail (and let’s face it, I never will be), it’s easy to see the appeal of a drinkfree (or at least, drink-less) life: mental clarity, increased energy... and those cringeworthy what did I do last night? flashbacks nothing but a distant memory. Oh, and you get your Sundays back for real adventures. Read all about it on p.26. Sound therapy, to help relax, improve sleep and guide listeners into a meditative state, has really been taking off recently. Even big spas around the city are increasingly enhancing their wellness experiences with the power of sound. Read more on p.32. The summer holidays feel so long ago, but we’re all revved up for our next trip after reading about Bali’s women-only retreats. Whether you want to learn to surf, kick butt at CrossFit or just do yoga and meditate, you can take time for yourself with a solo trip to paradise. Get inspired on p.44. P.S. It’s our birthday! Liv Magazine turns two this month, and what a fabulous ride it’s been. Thank you to all our readers, clients and

Pop Your Corks
Looking for organic wine that won’t leave you with a stonking hangover? Fresh Orgasmic Bottles is a little gem in Sai Ying Pun, selling some of the best biodynamic wines from around the world. Unlike mass produced varieties, the wines chosen here have been made using organic, small scale farming methods. Not your average wine shop, you can hang back and enjoy your tipple alongside artisanal tapas such as vegan dips, truffle manchego and Iberico loin. Even better, FOB gives back to the local community through their Drink For Good programme by donating $10 to Hong Kong charities for every bottle purchased. Go Clean a Beach
Give something back by lending a hand to clean up the unsightly rubbish that’s washed up on many of Hong Kong’s beautiful beaches. The Great Hong Kong Cleanup Challenge is on until December 1, and the organisers need your help! Now in its 17th year, the Cleanup has engaged almost 350,000 Hongkongers from all walks of life - including corporates, schools and local community teams - to help shift more than 14 million kilograms of trash from the city’s beaches and hiking trails. So grab some friends and take on the challenge to make Hong Kong’s coastline beautiful again. For more information and to sign up, head to www.hkcleanup.org. 12

Think Pink
October marks the Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s Pink Revolution, a campaign to help raise awareness of breast cancer in Hong Kong, and how early checks can save lives. In 2014, almost 4,000 women in Hong Kong were newly diagnosed with breast cancer, but still many don’t check their breasts. Show your support by dressing in pink and making a donation on October 27, or by picking up some pink charitable goodies from the Fund’s partners, including Shanghai Tang, Rebecca Minkoff, Amika, Pandora and more. For more information, visit pink.cancer-fund.org.

FRESH CUTS Dining news that’s good for you
CRYSTAL HEALING Everyone’s favourite Shanghai spot, Crystal Jade, has just launched a new “Eat for Good” menu created in collaboration with seasoned nutritionist and columnist Cynthia Wong. The menu still delivers those feel-good flavours that we’ve all come to expect from the fast n’ friendly restaurant chain, but with tons of new vegetarian options. It also offers a careful balance of grains, greens and protein in each dish. New entries include sweet and sour cucumber skin roll ($50), simmered noodles with diced chicken ($66), Sichuan dan dan la mian with peanut sauce and chilli oil ($60) and steamed vegetable dumplings ($31). And if you want to order an extra serving of their incredibly moreish xiao long bao dumplings, we’re not gonna judge. Crystal Jade has 14 locations across Hong Kong including IFC, Times Square and Harbour City. 2305-9990, www.hk.crystaljade.com. 14

GOING UP Zero Waste For Life
TASTE OF THAILAND Another restaurant to launch a health-conscious menu is Cafe Siam. The Thai favourite has teamed up with nutritionist Kim Murphy to launch its new Nutrilicious Thai Delicacies menu, which includes lighter, non-deepfried options that are low in sodium and sugar. The menu aims to give diners traditional Thai dishes with all those lovely bold flavours, but with more nutritional value and plenty of veg. We started off with some super fresh rice paper rolls made with mango, shrimp and mixed greens ($98) and glass noodle broth with mushrooms and tofu ($68) which was intensely savoury and comforting. We loved the next course, which consisted of a lighter interpretation of the traditional pork neck. It came grilled and served with a green papaya salad ($128). Finally, we opted for the spicy red curry with mixed veg and a side of brown rice ($98). Make sure you wash it all down with one of their low-sugar healthy detox drinks - our favourite was the refreshing Lemongrass & Pandan Leaf Cooler. 2-3/F, The Plaza, 21 D’Aguilar St., Central, 2851-4803; 38 Forbes St., Kennedy Town, 2855-0810, www.cafesiam.com.hk.
SPARE A SUNDAY Nothing to do on a Sunday? Head down to Sparestore, a pop-up vegan cafe that serves happy customers every Sunday from 11am-5pm. With the motto “Respect and have compassion for all animals,” Sparestore has already amassed a reputation for its great dairy-free cappuccinos, decadent cupcakes and tasty savoury vegan treats. Founded by two local vegans who wanted to challenge and change the way people perceive food, they started off by selling fully plantbased drinks and desserts at weekend markets and running regular vegan coffee mornings. The founders are also very particular about sourcing quality, sustainable ingredients, using local and organic fairtrade produce wherever possible in their dishes. Portland Commons: 1/F Le Prabelle Hotel, 372 Portland St., Prince Edward. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @sparestorehk.
More than a fad, zero waste (or as close as possible) is becoming a way of living for more and more people. Don’t forget your essentials: reusable food wraps, coffee cup, a metal straw and a biodegradable bamboo toothbrush!
Nex-Gen Mocktails Forget ordering a Coke; bars are now offering non-alcoholic drinks crafted with just as much love as their boozy counterparts. Read all about it on p.26.
Coffee Confusion First, experts say it reduces your diabetes and Alzheimer’s risk, then we’re told it’s terrible for stress and sleep quality. So… just one cup then?
Intricate Sports Bra Detailing High on style, but sadly there’s just not enough support for bouncier activities.

THEATRE OF FOOD You would be forgiven for missing Haku’s hidden doorway on the ground floor of Harbour City, but don’t give up because once you find it and step in, you’re transported from the hubbub outside to a swish Japanese restaurant with a distinctly European twist. Haku offers diners an interactive experience with “kappo”-style ceremonial dishes, served with a side of theatrics. Every day, executive chef Agustin Balbi and his team select the freshest ingredients to create a unique omakase menu for the day (around $1,500), meaning that diners will never have the same experience twice. With perfectly plated dishes such as pickled beetroot in the shape of a rose, Hokkaido uni on brioche, kumamoto tomato salad with bellota ham (pictured), and Kagoshima A4 Wagyu with bone marrow and truffle sauce, you’ll find a lot of European influences too. Perhaps our favourite part of the meal was the glorious dessert, a seasonal white peach filled with peach chunks, panna cotta, Hokkaido milk foam, and granita. Make sure to leave some space. TREATMENT
Bee Sting Facial Therapy at Chuan Body + Soul The Buzz: The Langham Hotel recently renovated their
health club and added a petite spa: Chuan Body + Soul. Though small it has luxurious facilities, including treatments by Heaven by Deborah Mitchell, an allnatural UK-based brand that offers a signature Bee Venom mask, which claims to be “nature’s botox.” The Treatment: You’ll be glad to know that while the

products contain contain bee venom, there’s no stinging or discomfort involved. In fact, it’s a very massage-based facial treatment, with an intense but deeply relaxing facial massage to get that product deep into the pores. While the mask takes effect, you can also pick from a leg or arm massage to really chill out. The products all smell divine, thanks to the vanilla, organic marshmallow and shea butter infusions.
The Buzz: With our infamous “work-hard-play-hard” culture, we Hong Kongers tend to be a pretty stressed-out bunch. This new treatment by Central-based multidisciplinary clinic Up!health promises to sort out our “Stressy Heads” using targeted Myofascial Release Therapy. The treatment claims to improve tension headaches, release tightness and “heavy” heads, and deliver an improved night’s sleep.
The Verdict: This facial is a bit different in that we

only really appreciated the results the next morning, when we woke up groggy after not enough sleep to a surprisingly taught, lifted complexion that suggested a great night’s rest. An added bonus: all Chuan Body + Soul guests get access to the hotel’s gym and pool, which even serves healthy, low-sugar cocktails and mocktails for a post-treatment relaxation sesh. bed and just relax. What followed can best be described as the most gentle massage we’d ever experienced, with tiny manipulations of the scalp, neck, head and jaw using extremely light pressure. The most surprising element of this treatment was how effective our therapist’s tiny circular movements were - at one point finding a pressure point the size of a pinhead just behind our ear and gently manipulating this until, inexplicably, an achy shoulder muscle spontaneously released. The Verdict: We left the 60-minute session feeling lighter, more relaxed and even somewhat taller, and that night finally shook off our jet lag, experiencing our best night’s sleep in weeks. For those of us who spend all day in front of a computer screen or suffer from tension headaches, this treatment may help you to ditch the painkillers and fully reset that stressy head. The Cost: Sessions cost $900 each, or $4,000 for a

High Performance Facial at Nude Waxing The Buzz: After several years as Central’s go-to place for ladyscaping,
Nude Beautique has diversified and opened several new locations, most recently in Tsim Sha Tsui. They’ve also added new beauty treatments to offer a convenient one-stop shop for all beauty maintenance. The Treatment : We opted for the 90-minute Anti-Wrinkle & Firmness Cellular Facial, which uses Collin Paris products to tighten and plump the skin, as well as reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The Verdict: The space felt super bright and relaxed. The treatment room
was a decent size and our therapist seemed very knowledgeable and experienced, offering advice for our skin type right from the get-go. For the facial, the products came in a little box set that the therapist applied, meaning that the quantity and quality of the products applied is always consistent. It felt very luxurious, especially the cooling mask, and afterwards our face did feel refreshed and plumped. The Cost: Our treatment cost $1,380, though other high performance,

WORKOUT
Barre class at Defin8 Fitness The Buzz: Defin8 Fitness is a small
boutique gym studio on Wyndham Street. It offers a range of classes, including Defin8 Barre, Fatburn + Abs Blaze, Trx Circuit, Pilates Reformer, Zumba and one-on-one training. The Class: Run by possibly the world’s most enthusiastic instructor and studio owner, Trixie Isla-Velez, the class kicked off with some warm-ups before we moved on to the barre itself. We performed sequences designed to tone and strengthen the core and lower body, from dance moves such as pliés and arabesques to traditional exercises such as squats and leg raises. Each one had to be performed to the music with grace, and many required you to lift your heels, giving your calves an extra workout. The Verdict: We had never done barre
before, partly because we didn’t think it would get us into enough of a sweat. Boy, how wrong we were! Some of the moves required lots of coordination and an incredible amount of strength to do correctly. Many were too challenging but luckily Trixie had modifications on hand. We would definitely consider adding barre to our regular routine. The Cost: Individual classes cost $220,
$1,880 for 10 and $3,500 for 20. classes are also available on GuavaPass. 6F Wong Chung Ming Commercial Building, 16 Wyndham St., Central, 9859-8620, www.defin8fitness.com.

Forget that image of the staid, uninspired teetotaller. Hongkongers are embracing an alcohol-free existence... and they still know how to party, says Adam White
W
e’ve all been there. Light filters through your eyelids. The warm glow of a Sunday morning, after a late Saturday night. Your thoughts swim into focus. And then it hits, all at once. A throb in the skull, beating in time to your heart. Limbs so weak you can barely reach for the Panadol. A throat so parched you can barely swallow. Deep from the pit of your stomach rises a feeling both physical and spiritual: everything really will not be OK. You try to piece together the night

from blurred photos and blurrier memories, stilted WhatsApp chains and missed calls, trying to work out if there’s anyone you need to apologise to - or anything you need to be returning. And then you pull the covers back over your head. So much for Sunday. Why do we do this to ourselves? And then why do we do it the week after, and the week after - and the week after that? Maybe we don’t have to. Hong Kong is gradually coming alive to the idea of partying hard - but leaving the hangovers behind.

MILLENNIALS IN MODERATION Across the world, Millennials are drinking less. In the UK, statistics released this year found that people aged 16-24 are less likely to drink than any other age group, with more than a quarter of them not drinking at all. Similarly, a 2016 Australian survey reported that Australians under 30 were drinking less, and just under a quarter of them were teetotal. Meanwhile, Canadian studies of millennials state that some drink less not because of health concerns - but worries about how it might look when the consequences end up on Instagram. Some 51 percent of respondents were concerned about the potential of being shamed on social media. Given a potent literal cocktail
of booze and easy video recording, it’s hardly surprising. But embarrassment doesn’t have to be an issue. A new wave of events is kicking that shame spiral to the curb, with the insistence that you can party hard - but party clean. Enter Daybreaker, an international early morning rave that’s made it to 17 cities around the world, and counting. Participants get up at the crack of dawn for early morning yoga and then an entirely sober dance party - refreshed, naturally, by a range of healthy juices and treats. To many, dancing without a drink in the system to loosen the limbs and crowd out the embarrassment sounds like torture, not something you’d fork out money for.

But thus far every Daybreaker event has sold out, so there’s plainly an appetite for a booze-free boogie. Singer, model and yoga teacher Rosemary Vandenbroucke is behind the Hong Kong iteration of Daybreaker, and she insists all you have to do is give it a go. “I had to convince a few of my friends to come with an open heart - and they've all came back thanking me and saying how they can't believe they could have so much fun completely sober. You never really know until you give it a try." Rosemary herself is a part-time teetotaller. “Every year I'll take a few months off the juice. Last year I did five months. The year before that, six months. This year I've now made it past nine months.” She says she finds staying off the sauce isn’t too hard, because of the benefits. “I have a newfound level of focus and productivity. On the other hand, being vegetarian for nine months has been much more challenging. I've had way more temptations, especially at Japanese restaurants!”

HONG KONG’S “OTHER” MOCKTAIL SCENE
First Light, photo: Kalok Ng
THE MOCKTAIL MOVEMENT Even if you’re not the kind of person to twerk across a dancefloor with nothing but a cup of coffee in your system, the evening crowd is also finding that they don’t have to end up dancing on the tables - or rolling in the gutter. Manuel Palacio Ramos, co-owner of the Pirata group, says he’s seen more and more people choosing not to drink with their meals, or on their nights out. “A lot of people are more health-conscious,” he says. “You have young people who go out and have a mocktail. They don’t want to sacrifice the quality of their drink they want one that’s well made, but 30
they don’t want to get wasted.” “People can look at me weirdly when I go to a restaurant and order a Diet Coke,” says Palacio Ramos. “We’re trying to promote it in our restaurants, so people feel comfortable if they don’t order alcohol.” He doesn’t just talk the talk: he’s also a recent convert to a low-alcohol life, after years of late nights as part of his job in the restaurant industry. “I spent 10 years of my life with hangovers every single day. Now I wake up at 7.30am, fresh and clear. It just feels great.” Next stop: the morning rave.
THE GUNNER Singapore has the Sling, but Hong Kong can really only lay claim to one drink… and it doesn’t even have any booze in it. The Gunner is a proud favourite of the city’s clubs, and rightly so. It’s very simple: equal parts ginger ale and ginger beer, with a healthy dash of Angostura bitters. Just the thing for a sweltering summer day.
THE COCKTAIL BUN There is one other Hong Kong cocktail: the humble cocktail bun. The name comes from its filling: originally day-old buns, to which a mixture of sugar and coconut were added - hence the "cocktail." Delicious? Yes. Healthier than a drink? The jury’s out…

MUSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF Sound has been an integral part of meditation and rituals for centuries, and now the modern world is tuning in to its potential benefits, writes Sarah Fung.
A
nyone who’s cried along to a weepy Adele breakup track or boogied to a feel-good summer hit understands the power of sound to affect how we feel. Sound has played an important role in meditation and rituals for thousands of years. From the “aum” chant we hear in yoga to Australian Aboriginal digeridoo ceremonies, many cultures employ a deep, resonant hum in their rites. In the past year or so, sound healing has taken off here in Hong Kong in a big way, with facilitators offering mediation sessions using gongs, singing bowls and crystal harps to “bathe” participants in a richly resonating sound to relax, destress and induce a meditative state.

A JOURNEY OF SOUND
While research is scant on some of the purported physical benefits of sound healing (such as boosting immunity, treating depression or pain relief), many people who have experienced a session wax lyrical about its ability to relax, clear the mind, improve sleep and boost an overall sense of wellbeing. Mona Choi fell in love with Himalayan singing bowls when learning ancient therapeutic massage techniques in Nepal. She learned all she could about them and brought them back to Hong Kong, where she now practices at Pause in Central. “In many countries, singing bowls are a quintessential aid to meditation, and can be found in temples, monasteries and meditation halls,” she says. “It is a very good way to practice mindfulness. It’s very easy [during meditation] to be distracted by thoughts, noise or even someone’s heavy breathing. However, if we focus on the bowls and stay present, we can go into a deep meditative state in a short period of time.”
You know a trend has really hit the mainstream when a big brand gets involved. The Grand Hyatt’s Plateau Spa has recently partnered with French audio brand Devialet to create a special massage treatment that uses strategically placed high-performance speakers to create a fully immersive soundscape, using noises recorded around Hong Kong. “With this project, we wish to take guests on a journey around the hidden sanctuaries of Hong Kong. It’s a meditative journey, where you feel like you are floating in sound,” says Julien Bergère, General Manager of Devialet Asia Pacific. The track was put together by Chris Craker of Karma Studios, who has worked on soundtracks to Hollywood blockbusters such as Interstellar. “Scientific tests have proved that the human body responds very sensitively to very specific frequencies, while innumerable other treatments using sound waves are now felt to be useful by the medical profession,” says Craker. The Devialet sound therapy massage will be available exclusively at The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong for six months. 11/F, 1 Harbour Rd., Wan Chai, 2584-7688, hongkong.grand.hyatt.com.

Another singing bowls practitioner is Minutes Leung of Ray of Aura. She explains what one might typically experience during a session. “Students are led to a meditative, dreamlike state. They look within and see clearly their deepest desires, or issues that require their attention. After a session, they normally feel as though they’ve woken from a deep sleep. After multiple sessions, students report a clearer state of mind. They are better at listening to their body, and are also calmer in their day-to-day lives.” “When I use the bowls, it helps people calm down their brainwaves and enter a state of total inner peace that leads to inner healing,” adds Vivian Vara Liu of LIFT Wellness Group, a crystal bowl practitioner who also plays a seven-tone crystal harp.

ASK THE EXPERT MAKING WAVES Your brain creates different, measurable brain waves depending on your mental output. The idea behind sound healing is that by playing corresponding sound frequencies, you can more easily guide your brain into a state of relaxation. All types of waves are required for healthy brain function.
GAMMA WAVES (HIGHLY ALERT) 30-42 HZ Most commonly perceived during states of high arousal, gamma waves are linked to learning, cognitive function and data processing.
BETA WAVES (ALERT, DATA PROCESSING) 12-30 HZ Essential for day-to-day functioning, Beta waves allow us to focus, complete tasks and recall information.
ALPHA WAVES (RELAXATION) 8-12 HZ Associated with wakeful relaxation, Alpha waves serve as the bridge between wakefulness and sleep.
THETA WAVES (LIGHT SLEEP/ MEDITATION) 4-8 HZ Associated with daydreaming and light sleep, Theta waves happen when we are meditating or in a semi-trance-like state. It is required for creative thinking and intuitive thinking.
DELTA WAVES (DEEP SLEEP) 0.5-3.5 HZ Delta waves are recorded during deep, restorative sleep and are essential for resting and revitalising the brain and body.
Dr Benjamin Chow, Specialist in Orthopaedics and Traumatology
Q. I previously had part of my meniscus removed. It is still painful. I’m wondering if the meniscus will regenerate, or whether I need more surgery? Unlike bone fractures, your meniscus cannot regenerate. This means that after a partial or full removal, it will become less effective when it comes to absorbing shock through your knees. Many patients do well after a partial menisectomy, but some patients continue to suffer with knee joint pain. You are also more likely to suffer osteoarthritis later down the line. If you are still suffering from knee joint pain, but are not yet suffering from osteoarthritis, you can consider implanting a synthetic meniscal scaffold, which will help to regenerate the meniscus.
Q. I have just undergone anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery. How long do I need to rest and recover for? Will I be able to play sports again? Your ACL is a knee ligament that connects the front of the tibia with the back of the femur. Most of the time, an ACL tear has to be treated by reconstruction, rather than repair. For this, a graft is necessary. The most common choice for a graft is the hamstring, or the patella tendon. After taking the graft, we complete the reconstruction through arthroscopy, or keyhole surgery, which is a far less invasive procedure. Recovery takes place in several stages. Most patients are able to walk unaided in one or two weeks. Normal daily activity such as staircases, bicycle-riding and quadricepsstrengthening can be managed and practiced in the first three months . Jogging and running can start after three months, and your doctor will usually clear you to return to contact sports after nine to 12 months.

HEY
SEOUL SISTER A beginner’s guide to Korean skincare. By Sanchita Daswani
I
n Western skincare, we are taught that “less is more.” A simplified approach to cleansing, toning and moisturising is all your skin needs to stay happy and healthy. However, the Korean approach to skincare, which has become all the rage in recent years, turns that concept on its head and instead advocates an elaborate ritual day and night, using up to 10 products to keep your skin hydrated and blemish-free. The key is to think of it as a self-care ritual to enjoy, rather than another item on your ever-growing to-do list. Take some time for yourself, and your skin might just thank you for it.
STEP
1
2
Double Cleansing Korean skincare rejects the commonly held belief that if you have oily skin, you cannot use an oil- based cleanser. Instead, it stresses the importance of cleansing twice, first with an oil-based cleanser, then with a waterbased product. An oil cleanser helps remove stubborn grime, sunscreen and oil debris, and then a water cleanser gently removes the rest.
Exfoliation Korean skincare forgoes grainy scrubs and instead uses acids such as AHAs and BHAs. Scrubs can actually damage the skin by scratching the skin’s surface, leading to redness and sensitivity. A chemical exfoliation, on the other hand, simply removes dead skin and promotes cell turnover.

Toner Our normal skin pH is around 5.5. After cleansing, the pH level shifts and it’s important to bring it back to its normal state, which is where toner comes in. Korean toners tend to be alcohol free and help to remove lingering impurities, moisturise and prep your skin.

Serums, Essences and Ampoules These highly concentrated liquids contain a high dose of active ingredients intended to have a specific effect. For example hyaluronic acid that instantly hydrates the skin, or vitamin C that helps to brighten and even out your complexion.

Sheet Masks Even if you don’t have dry skin, your skin needs moisture to retain its bounce. This is where the famous Korean sheet masks come in. They provide a quick boost of hydration… and 10 minutes of downtime while you wait for the mask to take effect.
Koreans beauty mavens love applying snail essence on their skin as it is an effective moisturizing ingredient.
Donkey milk Many Korean creams contain donkey milk as it has a lot of vitamins and minerals for softer skin.
Bee venom Meant to help repair damaged skin cells and plump the complexion.

Sunscreen Prevention is the best route to healthy skin. Use a sunscreen every day on your face, hands and feet to ward off sun spots and fine lines.
Ginseng To help with collagen production and brighten the skin.

French beauty brand l’Officine Universelle Buly was originally founded back in 1803 – and following a successful revival in 2014, they’ve just opened their first store in Hong Kong on Wyndham Street. SURF’S UP Zoe Belhomme escapes the mayhem of Hong Kong for a week learning to surf in one of Bali’s female-only retreats
“
What are your goals for this trip?” Renee, the resort manager asked me as I sipped on my coconut milk iced coffee just 15 minutes after I arrived at the resort. I didn’t really have a “goal” as such. I just wanted to get away from the daily grind and the increasingly unbearable Hong Kong summer. But they looked at me imploringly, in search of something a bit more explicit, and so I quickly declared “I want to learn how to surf!” Within the first three months of 2017, US group travel company Intrepid Travel noted a 35 percent increase in women booking active solo trips, compared to the same period the previous year. We’re no longer talking about the tired tropes of soulsearching and endless pampering (as popularised by Eat Pray Love). Women of all ages are looking to find adventure and push their physical boundaries - and they’re not frightened of doing it alone. I ended up on my first female-only surf and yoga retreat by complete chance. I was going to Bali anyway for a wedding with my partner, but the flight
44
seemed a little long for the weekend so I decided to head down earlier to spend a few days on the beach. But before I could book any accommodation, a friend told me about a surfing retreat she’d done the previous year and I was intrigued. After some searching online I decided on Escape Haven, located in the trendy Canggu region in Bali just north of Seminyak. Escape Haven retreats are all six nights long and can accommodate around 16 guests at a time. I joined the Revive programme which included surfing lessons in the morning followed by a daily spa treatment and a 90-minute yoga practice in the afternoon. I was keen to use my free week to learn a new skill and do something active; although the idea of eating well and being pampered was lovely, I wanted to challenge myself too. The fact that there was plenty of time to relax and eat delicious, healthy food was a bonus in my book! When I arrived at the private property I was blown away by the lush surroundings. The onsite retreat accommodation consisted of two beautifully
Travel
serene villa complexes, Villa Simona and Villa Levi, but there were also several slightly cheaper offsite options just a few minutes’ walk away. Our hosts for the week, Renee and Lauren, greeted each guest as they arrived before showing everyone to their rooms. On our first evening we all sat down before dinner to get to know each other and tell the whole group our goals for the week. As you can imagine, the reasons people join such a retreat are varied - to have some “me time,” learn a new skill or just relax away from the kids were common ones, but there were also some people who needed space to make big decisions in their lives, and they felt that this was the best place to do it. On the first full morning, my alarm rudely woke me at 6.10am, ready for a 6.30am breakfast and a 7am departure for Jimbaran Bay, where we would take our first surfing lesson. So far not much of a retreat, I thought as I clambered out of bed halfasleep. We were being taught by Luca Soulos, Rip Curl Master Coach and owner of local surf school, Shift
Division. Apparently he had great experience working with women of all ages to get them up on a surfboard and riding a wave. I’d surfed once before but was utterly hopeless so I wasn’t expecting to be able to get up. Luca promised me otherwise! Our group of seven were all complete novices so we spent the first 30 minutes of the lesson getting to know our boards and learning the techniques on dry land. By the time we got into the water with our four instructors we were all raring to go. My experience of surfing was a steep learning curve. While I found it surprisingly easy to get up, I soon discovered that there was only one way to end your ride on a wave: by falling off your board in the most undignified ways possible. Over the next five days we drove out each morning to different locations around Bali and experienced different surfing conditions. On day four we were taken to Sanur to surf off a reef break which was so different to what we’d done previously. I wouldn’t say that I had become a good surfer by the end of the week, but I did master the basics and

would have the confidence to do it on my own in the future - as long as the waves were small enough of course. My biggest surprise was the age range of the women on the surfing programme - the youngest was 28 and the oldest a few months off her 70th birthday. One of my retreatmates, Marie Rostek, a plastic surgeon in her 40s from Melbourne told me at the end of the day, “It was soo much fun trying something new and just being out of my comfort zone. Everyone was so easy going and and not too competitive - we just had so much fun together.” If anything, the age difference between the group helped us to bond. THOSE WHO WONDER Thailand’s music and eo-oriented festival is back again from December 14 to 17. This year, Wonderfruit is bringing together eclectic music acts like American experimental rock band Yeasayer, Filipino rapper Curtismith, and even some Thai reggae from Gapi and the Thai Dub Mafia. The tunes come paired with an ever-increasing lineup of wellness activities, workshops, food-fueled experiences (look for 48
Dean & Deluca and a slew of organic Thai eats) as well as a few family-friendly activities, such as bowling and paddle boarding. If dancing for three days doesn’t wear you out, there’s always fitness classes and yoga sessions - not to mention light and flotation therapy to wind you down. This is one festival you might just leave feeling better than when you arrived. December 14-17, 2017. Four-day tickets from $1,488. wonderfruitfestival.com.

GRAB THE GALS Roll with a squad of travel fiends? They’ll love this idea: the ultra-luxurious Trisara Phuket Thailand recently launched a Ladies Retreat packed with wellness, pampering and relaxation experiences. What’s the deal? After making yourselves at home in an Ocean View Pool Villa or Junior Suite, you’ll have your choice of sweat session, including a 60-minute Thai boxing, private yoga, or personal training. Then comes an hour-long massage at Jara Spa and plenty of time to relax and recharge. Shouldn’t be hard, given the idyllic beachfront setting. During the visit, you and your friends will also get to partake in a 30-minute photoshoot in the resort’s digital studio to immortalize the weekend. So get your glow on! From $7,433 per night, minimum 3 nights. 60/1 Moo 6, Srisoonthorn Rd., Cherngtalay, Phuket 83110, Thailand; +66 76 310 100, trisara.com.
WHAT’S YOUR MANTRA? Over in Koh Samui, Mantra Samui Resort just introduced its brand new Jai Spa - picture bamboo-clad walls, high ceilings and jungle all around. The spa’s philosophy revolves the mantra “slow-slow-slow,” inviting travellers to take each day at their own pace. That concept leaks into the treatments too, for which therapists use all-natural, homegrown ingredients such as coconut milk, lemon juice, tamarind, and lemongrass - all grown in the hotel’s gardens. Weekend break, anyone? There’s a “A Mantra for Mantra” opening wellness package that sounds amazing. It includes three nights, roundtrip transfers, a personal “spa plan,” two treatments a day, breakfast, healthy lunch or dinner daily, a private meditation class, and a private yoga class. Remember: take it slow-slow-slow. Available until March 31 2018. From $5,287 including private yoga and meditation. 9/124 Moo 1, Mae Nam, Koh Samui, 84330, Thailand; +66 77 951 600, mantrasamui.com. SALTABILITY TREATMENT AT BODHI SPA The Buzz: Love hot stone massage? You’ll die and go to heaven with Bodhi Spa’s new salt stone massage treatment, featuring Saltability, a Himalayan salt brand that provides products and treatments to some of the world’s best wellness centres. It uses smooth, warmed salt stones to enhance the detoxifying, circulation-boosting and deeply relaxing properties of its deep tissue massage. The Treatment: We lay face-down and the therapist placed the heated salt stones all along our spine. She then got to work on our thighs and calves, lulling us into a deep state of relaxation. She then worked on our back and arms, using the stones to get deeper into those muscles, before flipping us over and placing the stones along the chakra points along our navel for the rest of the treatment. The warm stones helped to relax our muscles and deepen the effects of the massage strokes, and while it was intense at times, it was deeply effective at easing long-held tension spots. The Verdict: Bodhi is a multi-award-winning spa, and with good reason. The therapists are skilled on a whole new level. Every kink was addressed, every knot ironed out. We left floating on air and ready for a good night’s sleep. The Cost: The 75-minute treatment is MOP1,350 (Mon-Thu) or MOP 1,450 (weekends and public holidays). Bodhi Spa, L/3, The Conrad Macau, Estrada do Istmo. s/n Cotai, Macau, (+853) 8113-6188.

TICKLED PINK More news from The Conrad: the hotel is once again turning pink for the month of October in support of breast cancer awareness. Not only will the lobby and staff be dressed in shades of pink, there will be special themed afternoon teas, spa treatments, cocktails and dining menus, with donations made to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund. We particularly love the sound of the pink afternoon tea, which includes rose-hued sweet and savoury bites. Pick the MOP238 set for two, which includes tea or coffee, two mocktails or cocktails, and a MOP25 donation, or the MOP298 set, which includes a pink bear or duck mascot and a MOP50 donation. The tea is available between 3-6pm for the entire month of October. The Conrad Macau, Estrada do Istmo. s/n Cotai, Macau, (+853) 8113-6188.
SWEEP THE STREET Over at Studio City, the Michelin Guide is holding a four-day Street Food Festival from October 5-8. Some of Asia’s top chefs will be creating their interpretations of popular street food dishes. Think Labyrinth, Candlenut and Song of India from Singapore; takoyaki from Osaka’s Kougaryu Honten; and Macau’s own Bi Ying and Pearl Dragon Chinese restaurants. Entry is free; dish coupons start at HKD40. Go hungry. Noon-8pm, Studio City, Estrada do Istmo, Macau, guide.michelin.com.hk.

FIT FAM with Kate Farr
October is arguably Hong Kong’s most family-friendly month, with cooler, drier weather meaning that kids get to enjoy a bit of free-range time outside. But as every good scout knows, it’s essential to be prepared, so here’s a couple of tempting tricks and treats to stash up your sleeve in case of rogue storms… or rogue sulks, for that matter.
GOOD WOOD
STICK ‘EM UP If there’s one thing that all children seem to love, it’s video games. And if there’s one thing that persuades reluctant parents to allow their kids video games, it’s an educational element. Available for both iOS and Android, Chopstick Champion combines fun and facts in a new game that teaches kids about Asia’s culinary and cultural heritage. Featuring an all-star cast of historical figures, such as Ho Chi Minh, the Dalai Lama, and the Granddaddy of all levelend bosses, Genghis Khan, the game also helps kids to develop an awareness of ratios, tasking them with several risk-to-reward calculations that influence outcomes. But most interesting of all is the environmental conservation narrative that runs throughout the game, teaching kids how their small eco-actions can create a much wider ripple effect. Oh, and I should probably mention it’s great fun too. Download for free (in-app purchases apply) via chopstickchampion.net.
Younger sibs may prefer a more low-fi playtime, which is where Little Bean’s Toy Chest comes in. Founded by a Hong Kong mum, this online store offers a carefully selected range of US and Australian-made toys crafted from sustainable wood, all ideal for nurturing unstructured play. Favourites include the Montessorifriendly rainbow stacking-block set, a natural wood construction set finished in food-grade paint, and adorable wooden binoculars and cameras that build little imaginations while you’re on the road. Prices range from $50-450. Shop online at littlebeanstoychest.com.
GHOUL RUNNINGS Taking place on October 29, the SUNIFG Halloween Streetathon race hits Kowloon East. With a mission to spook up the starting line and creep out the course as it winds its way around Kwun Tong, Kai Tak and beyond, the Streetathon raises money for two good causes along the way. There’s a half-marathon for over-18s, plus 3, 5 and 10k courses for kids aged 12 and over to tackle. Meanwhile, younger kids can team up with an adult to take on the Pumpkins Mission Run, which promises to be a mental and physical challenge for everyone involved. All courses are non-competitive, so there’s no need to try and smash that PB: just dress up, turn up and creep out. Registration fees vary by course. My workout song: My beauty essential: Moroccan Oil - an essential for the humid Hong Kong weather and my wavy hair situation.
Right now it’s “Unforgettable” by French Montana so addictive.
Last treat I bought for myself: A dress by Baja East. I love online store revolve.com obsessed!
I always have in my gym bag: Bulletproof chocolate. I try not to snack, but I nibble on this throughout the day. No sugar and all the good fats.
What I'm listening to:
What I'm reading right now:
Travis Scott. You wouldn't expect it from me but it takes me back to the New York scene.
I’m rereading a favourite: “The Wisdom of Insecurity” by Alan Watts. It’s like my guide book. It’s written so beautifully and somehow always puts me in the right frame of mind. My friend recently gave me “The Tools of Titans” by Tim Ferriss and I can’t wait to get into it.
What I'm watching on TV: I don't have much time for TV but I will watch Suits now and again.
My last plane trip: London and Paris for a wedding.
I always have in my fridge: Fage 0% yoghurt, eggs, berries, dragonfruit, coconut water, and homemade almond and coconut milk - I need these to make all my smoothie, yoghurt and egg bowls.
On my bucket list: I have so many travel plans on my wishlist, but I want to make it to South Africa soon.
