For Measuring, I photographed the object(umbrella) firstly for reference and then measured the object itself. For the exterior part, diameter and height of the umbrella, i used tape to measure. Besides, a short ruler was used for the detail measurement inside the umbrella (such as strechers). After that, I chose the most suitable scale to fit it in A4 paper.

Analysis The umbrella uses a Skin and Bone system. The frame structure of the umbrella is formed by repeating ribs and structures. There are eight ribs and stretchers which act as bone system. The umbrella’s canopy which acts as skin system is mostly made of flexible plastic or fabric.
Materials: Made of fabric or flexible plastic for it to be waterproof

Digital Model The digital model of the umbrella was created by Rhino. I encountered some struggles during the process and will show those parts in the appendix.

Digital Modelling Process
1. Start with drawing a polyline and then offset the curve in front view. After that, Use pipe: round caps button to the bottom line.
2. Use polar button to draw eight of the ribs and then use line to connect each of the angle.
3. Go to Front view, right click the Revolve button and choose both of the top and button lines and then rotate.
4. Draw a line from the middle of the top and then use pipe: flat caps button for the handle.
5. Draw 8 lines then use pipe: flat caps for the strechers.
6. Complete the umbrella by using line and pipe: flat caps button for the detail parts.

Sketch Model
I made a 3 dimensional reconfiguration sketch by using cardboard in both rectangular and triangular hollow prisms. In this condition, I would like to define all the surfaces in my model as skin. I used all the connected surfaces to be considered as bone which shown above.
8
Sketch Model Making Process
For the making process, I mostly used the simple elements such as triangular and rectangular hollow prisms in different size which made by grey cardboard and then stuck and overlapped them together.
9
Sketch Design #1 shell shape, triangular structure
How does this respond to your personal space? i would like to use shell shape as the second skin because it is protective and looks confortable to lean on.
10
Sketch Design #2 feather and wings
How does this respond to your personal space? The use of umbrella is for hiding from rain. However, it will remind me of the bird’s wing when it is trying to hide the small birds by using their wings. On the other hand, the wing itself is also skin and bone structure.

Appendix
For digital model, I tried twice and failed once. It was such a difficulty for adjusting the angle of each strecher as I did not know the correct way yet.
