Insolence

Since coming onto the fashion scene just a few months ago, camilla Yosuke’s lingerie has taken Second Life by storm. Her designs are very delicate, intricate and show such great detail; it is amazing to think she has only just begun. Not only are her lingerie designs fabulous, but her ads for them are works of art in their own right. camilla has also designed shoes and fashionable eyewear that are just as brilliant as her lingerie is. I was fortunate enough to meet camilla early on and I have been a big fan of her work ever since I walked into her shop and saw what she was creating. It was truly an honour to be able to sit down with her and interview her for this month’s issue of ASpiRE! Magazine. Isabella Lazarno: “camilla, you haven’t been in Second Life very long, but yet you have quickly managed to create some of the most gorgeous lingerie that SL has ever seen. Have you been involved in projects or in area prior to SL that led you to becoming a designer in SL?” camilla Yosuke: “Well, I was an art student years ago. I mostly used what I learned from the things I saw on CD covers, with music, or theatre group signs, but I also worked a lot in 3D in totally different areas.”

Takes Second Life by Storm Written by Isabella Lazarno

Isabella Lazarno: “Did you start making lingerie, shoes, glasses, etc as soon s you started playing SL, or did it take some time for you to get started with designing?” camilla Yosuke: “It began when I had been wandering around and found myself in need of clothing, and having not a single linden to spend. I then understood there was a niche for me here.” Isabella Lazarno: “So, that inspired you to start making clothing; first making it for yourself, and then that moved onto you starting your own business?” camilla Yosuke: “Yes, exactly, I realized designing matched my experience perfectly.” Isabella Lazarno: “Do you only use gimp when creating your designs, or do you use photoshop as well?” camilla Yosuke: “Well, I’m using linux, so I am pleasantly stuck with gimp.” Isabella Lazarno: “What influences the designs you come up with? Do you draw them yourself or use what you might see from ads or magazines?” camilla Yosuke: “I read a lot and go shopping with friends IRL, so, yes; I am inspired by what exists. I then draw the designs myself.” Isabella Lazarno: “So, you draw/sketch them and go from there with the idea into gimp? About how long does it take to complete one design from start to finish?”

camilla Yosuke: “Yes, in fact, I draw directly on the screen, but it’s the same really. It usually takes about 5 days to complete a design.”

along with a whole new stockings collection.”

camilla Yosuke: “Well, first of all I love designing. I’d say my technical experience helps a lot, in that I am very comfortable with the tools I use.”

Isabella Lazarno: “You seem to be adding a new design a week, but I’m sure that depends on how much time you have in that week; is this the pace you hope to keep?”

Isabella Lazarno: “Does it take a lot of patience to complete the designs because the details are so intricate and are fabulous?”

camilla Yosuke: “Yes, I am trying to keep that pace, but to tell you the truth, I need to sort my inventory, clean up things, and there are so many things to do IRL as well.”

camilla Yosuke: “Yes, patience, but when you like your work the time it takes is time well spent. Isabella Lazarno: “Do you have plans to expand on the lingerie designs with other clothing items, or do you plan to stick to lingerie?” camilla Yosuke: “I have been asking myself this question actually. I may add swimwear and night wear, but for now I don’t think I will really go into regular clothing.” Isabella Lazarno: “Your lingerie has taken all of SL by storm, everyone really loves it and you have gotten such wonderful reviews. Was it overwhelming at first, once everyone knew who you were and where to get your designs?” camilla Yosuke: “Oh, I think I’ve had fantastic luck, being reviewed by one of the most famous girls in the early stages. I’m really glad to be receiving such lovely feedback, but you know I’m a rather shy girl, and it’s an odd and new situation for me.”

Isabella Lazarno: “Have you ever thought about doing a line of “Wedding Night Lingerie?” camilla Yosuke: “Actually, I hadn’t thought of doing that. Thanks for the idea!” Isabella Lazarno: “Is there anything else that you would like ASpiRE! readers to know about camilla Yosuke?” camilla Yosuke: “Well, one thing is sure, I love to meet kind people and there are tons of them here. I really wish I had more time to meet people.” camilla Yosuke is the owner of Insolence, and is designing some of the most fabulous lingerie that has been created thus far in Second Life. Keep an eye on her because she is a brilliant designer and has new creations that she is constantly working on and perfecting. I am certain that her future designs will be just as wonderful as the ones she has already created. If you have not been to Insolence, you must go. I assure you, you will walk away with purchases in hand that you will rush home to try on. Insolence is located in Venom 94, 134, 28.

Isabella Lazarno: “I’ve noticed that you have added tattoo friendly versions of your designs now, was that at the request of your customers?” camilla Yosuke: “Yes, I have been asked dozen of times and I really didn’t think of that at the beginning. I’m trying to get a glance of the SL fashion lingerie, but it’s not easy and I have so little time for shopping.” Isabella Lazarno: “Do you have any designs that you are working on right now that you want ASpiRE! readers to keep an eye out for?” camilla Yosuke: “Well, I have several designs that are drafts, which I advance simultaneously, and then when one looks ready enough, I polish it. Hair Fair 2007

Aunnia Wilberg: How long have you been in second life?

Aunnia Wilberg: I know that part of the proceeds is going to locks of love, exactly what is this?

Six Kennedy: A little over 2 years.

Six Kennedy: Hair Fair 2006 didn’t sponsor any charity so this year the organizers thought it would be nice for a charity to benefit from all the attention Hair Fair gets. The organizers decided on Locks of Love, an organization that provides wigs to children that have lost their hair from medical conditions. Celebrity Trollup and Sol Columbia signed on to be our charity liaisons and handle everything from contacting the charity, organizing the participant donations, and then writing a check to the charity. For any specifics about that you can contact either one of them as they are completely handling the charity portion of the fair. All the participants were asked to donate at least 30% of the profit on at least one of the styles they were showcasing. Sol Columbia provided a split profit script that went into the merchandise. That way the percentage set aside for the charity went directly into an account they set up for the event so that it could be tracked. Elika also made some T-shirts, Paisley organized a community wig project where the wigs will be auctioned off and Sasy Scarborough organized a Bandana fundraiser that many designers contributed to; all of the proceeds from those things will be added to the donation the Charity Liaisons will be making.

Aunnia Wilberg: What made you decide to design hair? Six Kennedy: I like being able to change my hairstyles often and making hair gave me the freedom to design things exactly the way I want them. Aunnia Wilberg: How did the idea for the hair fair came to be?

Hair Fair ‘07 pictures by: Shoshana Epsilon Vendors and shoppers, heavy lag, lots of crashing!

Six Kennedy: I was fairly new to hair design, only having been in the business a few months, when a couple of hair designers that I totally respect messaged me to tell me they thought I was doing a good job. It really shocked me at how kind they were, and that for a field that is supposed to be “competitive”, how very supportive they were. I found we had a lot in common, the same concerns, and obviously, the same passion. I thought it would be nice to get to know them better as well as all the hair designers out there, and just have some fun way of coming together. I sent out a couple of note cards to some hair designers to see what they would thought of us all getting together for a week and putting on a hair show. The first people I contacted were so enthusiastic about the idea and wanting to help, and from there it just took on a life of its own. Hair Fair 2006 was so much fun. It really created a sort of “hair community”, a group of us that all look out for each other , and support one another. Hair Fair 2006 definitely wouldn’t have been possible without Zyrra Falcone and Raylin Portocorerro who completely busted their butts to make it work. This year’s Hair Fair would not been possible without the hard work of Elikapeka Tiramesu and Paisley Poindexter-Carryn Concord, Sasy Scarborough, Celebrity Trollup, Starley Thereian, Sol Columbia as well as other organizers also provided great support to making the event happen.

Six Kennedy: This year we had the benefit of learning from some of the mistakes we made last year, and I think because of this the Fair was a little bit more structured. We also used 2 sims for the event, anticipating the load we didn’t foresee last year (special thanks to Elikapeka and Starley for providing the venue). Aunnia Wilberg: Approximately how many hair designers participated in the hair fair this year? Six Kennedy: I believe it ended up being about 58 total designers. (Some participating stores have more than one designer.)

This month was a very exciting month for most everyone in second life. We were all excited, waiting in anticipation for this year’s Hair Fair. I was counting down the hours, then minutes, wanting to be the first one there. Just as I suspected, the lag monster raised its ugly head and brought the “crash” monster along with it. I knew as I was waiting to get in that it might have been better to wait a couple of days for the newness to wear down, but being the shopaholic I am there was no way that I could wait.

I bought four different styles and I started a bid on one of the designs that was up for an auction, but the bid got too high for my pocket book. I went away thinking that this one was better than last year and that next year will be hard to top this year, but I have a feeling it will.

The Hair Fair this year consisted of two sims side by side. There were over 50 different designers all pitching in new designs and giving part of the proceeds towards an organization called Locks of Love. Six Kennedy, along with other designers, was responsible for putting together Hair Fair 2007. I was able to ask her a few questions about the Hair Fair 2007.

from The Sims Online, and brought their friendship to Second Life. Their respective businesses began to get larger and larger, as more and more people found, loved, and purchased their creations, and they eventually expanded onto private islands to accommodate their respective designs.

Interview with Nyte Caligari of

Nyte’ N ’Day

Written by Ally Geer Photography by Trina Noland

Nyte’s influences in her clothing designs are based upon real life clothing that she likes. She says a lot of the things are based upon some of her real life closet, or if she sees someone wearing something that she likes, she takes a mental snapshot and figures her own little touches to add to it. Nyte’s strong point, she feels, is her ability to do realistic drawn designs without photos. Her creations are a mixture of casual, formal, lingerie, and club wear. The use of rich color and detailing sets her apart from a great number of designers.

Clothes, Skins and More

On a recent gorgeous springtime Second Life day, I had the honor of sitting down with the lovely and gracious Nyte Caligari, designer extraordinaire of some of SecondLife’s best clothing and skins. Nyte and I joined Second Life about the same time, and we became friends shortly thereafter when we ran into one another at the Beverly Hills sim. I had discovered Nyte’s creations a few weeks before and had immediately noticed the gorgeous use of color and design of things that I would actually wear in real life. I was excited to do the interview, to learn more about Nyte’s story and the influence of her Second Life designs. Nyte discovered Second Life in May of 2005, while she was self employed as a web designer/programmer. She explained that one day while surfing the web, she was searching online games and Second Life popped up. She downloaded it and was immediately addicted. Nyte said that she was in Second Life for a few months, wandering around and having fun before she got the urge to start designing. When she did, creation came naturally to her as she already knew Photoshop; so she downloaded the clothing templates and began designing.

After a bit of time, Nyte decided to try her hand at skins. She said that she wanted more makeup choices for her avatar, but couldn’t afford to buy skins from others all the time, so she began learning. Her skins and outfits have evolved from there, and she says there are new, fun things to come. She and Sol Columbia of Luminosity are currently in the early stages of working on business wear. Nyte doesn’t really plan what or when she is going to design, but says “I design completely on a whim…. When inspiration is there, it’s there, and when it’s not, nothing turns out right”. Good thing for the ladies and gentlemen of Second Life that she has lots of inspiration and lots of talent! I asked Nyte if there was anything she would like to share or say to her Second Life supporters. She replied, “A HUGE thank you to everyone who supports me and likes my items! I think it’s so cool that the Second Life community likes my stuff so much, it makes me smile every time I think about that! It was also a huge eyeopener, when I got really sick, the amount of support and kind IM’s, notes, etc. that I got from everyone. It really, really blew me away. I’m just really happy to have Second Life in my life and to be able to do what I do. Not only is it really cool, but it basically saved my life. Without it, for the few months I was too sick to do anything … I would have not been able to pay rent, eat, etc.” I think all of us who know and wear Nyte’s lovely things would say, “Thank you, Nyte, for all that you do and create; and for being such a kind and generous soul.” Nyte Caligari’s Nyte’N’Day-Clothes, Skins and More is located on Couture Isle at 101, 125, 48. Awesome Designs

Written by Adrienne Beliveau Photographs by Encore Mayne

I’ve always been a fan of the saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” Talking with Julia Soothsayer brought that to mind as she is a perfect example of someone who did just that. Julia, a registered nurse by profession, discovered SL just one month before she found herself home on medical leave recuperating from a car accident. This was in February of 2006. After her initial round of mad shopping spree every new resident goes though, she opened a little store called “Awesome Interiors” selling “pillows and odds and ends” that she made. As she tells it, one day she made an outfit in the “appearance” editor and loved it. She knew then she wanted to design clothes and do it right. Having no graphics background before SL, she taught herself Photoshop and went to the Designer Julia Soothsayer wearing “Vibrant” in Dark Eggplant at Awesome Designs’ beach.

ladies clothing and accessories.” While most of her clothing is targeted for the young, the hip and the provocative, even a fairly conservative dresser like me found several items that have become favorites. The first is a pair of “Glitter and Gold Stilettos” that are perfect for formal wear. Another is the “Shimmer Dress Tangerine” which is an easy breezy knockout with a black and gold belt and black edging on the bodice and prim skirt. She also includes tank tops in her more daring collections for people who don’t want to reveal too much.

forums to learn about alpha channels. As she describes it, “the rest has been just trial and error learning.” And a fast learner she was. Looking around at her newest Awesome Designs on Awesome Island, you can see her hand in everything there. From the shop building she built herself, to the entire collection of clothing and shoes inside the store. Julia says she doesn’t sell anything she hasn’t made. This is the third shop she has built, and it is huge. She likes to give her customers room so that they “do not feel crowded” while shopping. But, this isn’t the only place where she sells her merchandise. Get ready for some “awesome” figures. “Awesome Designs” is represented in approximately 100 malls in SL. There are over 1,200 loyal fans in her “Awesome Designs” group which can be found in “Search.” Julia is very thankful that many of the girls who bought her first designs are still with her today, and she is appreciative of her newer clients as well. She likes to do special things for her group members, like making something in one color and giving it to her members for free. The landmark for “Awesome Design’s” main store reads “Sexy ASPIRE . 52

When I met Julia for the interview, she was wearing an outfit from one of her newest and best sellers - the “Vibrant” collection - which features long and short satin finish dresses consisting of top, glitch pants, flexi skirts, and belt. It comes in a variety of colors including Deep Eggplant, Black, Cherry, Pink, Royal Blue, Platinum, Green, and Orange. The dresses can be bought singly or in pairs. She is working on a new collection that will include midriff sweaters, pants, and skirts that will be sold separately but that can be mixed and matched. This is a departure from her usual skirt and pants sets that are her mainstay. She previewed one of the skirts aptly named “Scandalous” for us in a beautiful mauve. The skirt has a transparency that deepens towards the bottom before it is finished off with a lace trim. Julia has become so successful, being in SL for just over a year, that she has decided not to go back to nursing for a while. She says, “This is where I plan to be if SL sticks around.” She especially appreciates that working in SL gives her a chance to stay at home with her four year old. It must be every mother’s dream to be able to work at home at something they love. A fine lemonade maker Julia Soothsayer is, and a totally awesome woman.

Everyone could use a little Zen to lighten up their day. And that is exactly what House of Zen, and its island location, Hinode Shima (Sunrise Island), are providing to beach-loving SL islanders and all the rest of us who just can’t get enough of the clothing. Before meeting with designer Zen Deledda, I decided to take a tour of

the island, to get a sense of the atmosphere, and to find out just what Zen’s profile meant about knowing how to speak “Zennish”. It sounded to me as though I was in for an experience, and I was right. My curiosity was well rewarded by manager Sasy Scarborough, who was more than happy to show me around. After I introduced myself, we walked a short distance to a dock with a beautiful ocean view, enjoying the sunset over the water as I reflected on the serene settings. We settled in for a Tai Chi session, which Sasy holds on a regular basis. House of Zen group members receive notices about Tai Chi sessions, along with new releases, fashion shows, and other events. Our session was very calming, and provided a chance for us to talk about House of Zen and the island. Hinode Shima is the second location for House of Zen, and has been up for just over six months now. The island also features a temple set up for meditation on the ASPIRE . 58

High Heels, Not High Ideals Written by Megan Forman Photographs by Anastase Rosewood and Digit Darkes Shoes; in the world, we tend to notice them either first or last, but they can tell us a lot about a person. A cheap pair of shoes can modify the tone of entire outfit, as can expensive ones. Put a nice pair of stilettos on a power suit and you have a completely different outfit all together. Put a pair of mary-janes on in a ball gown, and you’ve gone from elegant to goth. They are, in women’s fashion, the most important accessory, and aside from precious stones, often the most expensive. But in Second Life, the cost of shoes is much easier to approach. They don’t wear out, they don’t scuff, and you can always walk gracefully in six-inch heels if you have the right AO. The rules of shoes in SL are different, and so therefore are the needs.

Sylfie Minogue, designer of the Sylfie’s Prim Seduction line of shoes, sat down with our reporter to tell us about her experiences in the world of SL Shoes, and what drives her to make her classic, fantastic stilettos and heels. Sylfie Minogue is not what you might expect from a woman of her popularity and fame in Second Life. Certainly, when we met on her island, Sylfie, I was not surprised by the long legged beauty in heels. Familiarity, it seems, dispels the illusion of the coquette woman and reveals a person of depth and true charm. Sylfie, her name derived from her nom de plume in other online-worlds, is a designer of classic, high-heeled shoes and other flat or low-heeled footwear. Her inspiration? Style. What looks and feels right. A vision of beauty from a pair of heels and what they add to the rest of an outfit. Yet what surprised me the most about her was her honesty, and how this translates into her work. She strives for variety, to try and meet the need of her customers. She creates not only for herself, but also for what she believes other people might look for in a shoe or boot. She avoids wearing any clothes with too long a pant-leg or any long skirts, so at any time she can load up a pair of her shoes and address a customer’s need or issue. Sylfie is very approachable, and very busy, but treats people she meets with dignity and courtesy. Her shoes are designed using only the tools in Second

loves her work to this day, Sylfie laughed and responded, “Yes, I love the work I do, I can see that my work here in SL is appreciated by many and that’s why I work hard to keep my designs and styles impressive.”

Life, buying textures that fit the needs of the piece she’s seeking to create. When asked what her largest concern was, it was the increasing number of non-English speaking customers; she has trouble responding to their needs with the alacrity she expects of herself. And, naturally, the ever-present difficulties of vanishing inventories and lag. Her designs are a blend of classic style and form, with an emphasis on making the shoe elegant, but natural looking. These are the kinds of heels Marilyn Monroe would look great in, but so would any woman. She seeks to make the kind of heels we could wear in the real world. Her favourite designs? “The Defiant and the Huntress”. She began to create shoes in SL after experimenting with furniture and home design, and then moved on to creating her shoes. The creative ethic of a woman who has come to a place where you can create your own clothing and world has stayed with her since her SL birth in 2005. When asked if she still

Every artist has her muse, and for Sylfie it is her mood. A good mood can set her spinning for hours, as can a poor experience in Second or real Life. An important point to understand about Sylfie is that she doesn’t emulate a real life fashion in particular, but rather an ideal and entire genre of fashion and shoes that befit her personal tastes. “I don’t have anyone particular in mind, believe it or not, but I didn’t even know the name Manolo Blahnik when I first heard his name. Like all women, it all falls to a personal taste.”

“Essential” Periwinkle/Black Stiletto

Sylfie does wear high heels in real life, but admits she isn’t affluent enough to brag about any brand names that adorn her feet. In Second Life, she prefers Calico Creations hair, Gala Phoenix skins, Wanda Rich’s Mistress or Solange’s Shiva outfit, any AO that strikes her fancy and of course her own shoes (she was wearing the huntress when we spoke). Her shoes are all made for Size 0 feet, but they truly fit the foot, and come with a walking animation to make the stride look natural.

“Lashed” Copper/Pink Stiletto

Sylfie can be reached via Notecard on her profile, and her store is located on her island, Sylfie. The store features a picture of each and every inventory item with the L$ Price. They come with right and left prims with the walk AO, and one without, on top of the basic shoe. They are No-Copy, No-Modify. Her simple but honest approach to fashion brings purity into her work. Sylfie doesn’t even have an update group for her designs! She tries to remain humble, despite fan mail and the sheer and obvious popularity of her work. “Once in a while I have to let the air out of my head, I don’t think I want to get too high from all the positive feedback. I prefer to stay on the ground and be content with what I do … I’m sort of my own person and the designs I make reflect that.” Sylfie relaxing in her hammock

The best laid plans go awry again. I had three events to cover for this column this month and two of them got rescheduled three days before deadline; one for technical difficulties and one because they totally forgot it was Easter. However, one that didn’t get rescheduled for any reason was the grand opening of “Sublime Restaurant” and “Sublime Village” (Sublime Isle 74, 86, 25) on March 31. The strictly formal three hour event drew a large crowd anxious to see the new site, while DJ Timothy Scarborough played everyone’s favorite dance songs. Two events were held: a Foot Trivia game, and a Most Elegant Couple contest which ended in a tie. The two winning couples were Ginnie Bartlett and Bram Ellison, and Melinda Childs and Quick Stilman. The event gave the guests the opportunity not only to enjoy themselves dancing, but also a chance to check out the new shops in the village. An interesting shop is “Leah’s Well”, which is home to the Beit Binah Collection. 100% of the proceeds from the sales in this collection go to support the Beit Binah Intentional community, a “co-op, spiritually focused Jewish Community” located in SL. More about this community can be found at www.beitbinah.com. Chef Michelle Thurston has turned her creative talents to a line of boots that she carries in her shop, named “Mermaid Melody”. Sublime owners Beatrice Honey and Viktor Gascoigne have several shops showcasing their myriad talents, including “Honey’s Portraiture,” “Sublime Wines,” “Sublime Pizzeria,” “Sublime Boulangerie” which features custom cakes, and “Innovative Creations” where they offer custom building expertise. Next issue I will include coverage of the two events that rescheduled. So look for an art auction to benefit Ayeshe Millions, a housewarming party for two Underlight Refugees Liora Goldbatt and Guiseppe Milner, along with an art exhibit at “Angel Dorei” in Solaris and coverage of the Beach Party to open St. Thomas Beach and St. Thomas Shops. Written By Anastase Rosewood Photographs by Lalaine Lafontaine Ariel Black, designer of Rising Phoenix Designs, recently held a fashion show for her new line of clothes. The show was held at Demoness Pharaoh’s club “The Gallery” on Friday, March 30th. I was fortunate to be invited to cover the fashion show for ASpiRE! Magazine. Rising Phoenix designs are the cutting edge, and Ariel Black is a very talented lady. During the show, Demoness let everyone vote on the best male and female outfits worn by guests. The prize was $400L and a free outfit from Ariel, quite an incentive! The show was MC’d by the incredible Gage Goodliffe.

I’ve never seen so many people attending a fashion show. Many of Ariel’s friends came out to support her, including Rebel Hope and RH Engel of the prestigious RH Designs. In fact, they and several other people were carrying signs that said “Ariel’s Lovah”, which gives you an idea of the fun atmosphere. There was also a

Ashby Whittlesca showed us the “Fushion outfit”. This is reminiscent of tropical surf riding windswept beaches. It is two-tone blue. Off-the-shoulder long sleeves and sandy textured hip hugging jeans rivals the attention given to any skimpy bikini. The knit top flatters and accentuates every curve and with the flat front detailing and a smart metal buckled belt the hip huggers will be a primary player and an essential to any wardrobe. Model Fleur Bartlett sported an outfit named “Creep”. The spider in the center of the top is divided by a nice sassy bit of décolletage. The flexi skirt is just adorable, and has a nice tantalizing slit in front to give you a peek at the lace up shorts underneath. The socks are a perfect compliment to the rest of the outfit because the hue is slightly different and the striping is wider. Everything about this outfit to me, screams playful, energetic naughty girl. Model Willow Truss came out in “Have You Been A Good Boy”. This is for the naughty lady who’s feeling playful. It’s a tantalizing outfit that gives a glimpse of treasures hidden beneath risque fishnet edged in sleek black leather. Dark and mysterious, it both tempts and delights. Lillie Ellison showed us “Killer”. It is a fascinating combination of superhero and night club girl. The darker green, burnt orange and plum colors make this outfit work so well because they aren’t overly bright and blinding. The straps lying across the chest and along the left hip taunt you with vivid sex appeal and dare you to come closer. Once more Ariel Black’s eye for detail adds in just the right mixture of sweetness with the green tie along the right leg.

Model Minolin Eclipse wore “Military Fetish”, a sleek and eye catching design. The knee length skirt hints subtle sex appeal, while the openwork top teases, threatening to reveal yet not quite doing so. The style is reminiscent of the 1940’s yet has a distinctive 21st century flair. Lastly, Model Jackson Holsworthy modeled “Elevation”. This outfit features balanced blue with white accented sleeves Worn with the blue jeans this ensemble is a “do anything - go anywhere” look. Of the clothes that were modeled, Demoness said “Ariel’s clothing designs are works of art, things of pure beauty” I agreed, and felt the show was a smashing success.
