STUDIO WORK EXERCISE 1 1) The asymmetrical skeletal structure in my auditoriums design is meant to achieve the goal of being, an interesting spatial defining element, as well as aesthetically pleasing. I’ve attempted to depict a feeling of dynamic movement by using two linear radial forms, which I then placed on top of each other, to create the form structure.
The exposed structure becomes the main element due to its scale and striking lines. All though the scale of the structure is dominating, it was necessary to break the monotony of the scale and create a more comfortable spatial feeling to better suit the human scale. I’ve achieved this by suspending a low over head plane which hangs in tension off from the structure. This also helps to articulate the spaces and also provide protection from the elements. In conclusion I’ve learnt through my research and building of development models, that even though a structure primarily makes a building stand up, it contributes much more to the building. The Structure of a building: *determines to a certain extent, overall design of the building. * creates the form of the building * sets a dominant scale. * can act as an aesthetic feature *can direct the viewer’s attention to a focal point. *It allows for secondary elements to be built onto, clipped, or hung off from it. * is constrained to its type of material use to built the structure.
