EXISTING DOMINANT SPECIES
Sir Zelman Cowen Park is home to numerous sporting clubs including football, soccer, and baseball, which has large active open space. This project employs the growth of plants as materials in shaping spaces and human experiences under the future climate change scenario. It transforms the interstitial spaces towards wild urban woodlands and native meadows through spontaneous vegetation in Kooyong Park to enhance species diversity, support local community’s wellbeing in a cost-effective way

PLANT PHENOLOGY During a year me, most of plants blooms at late spring. The a rac ve flowers and with sweet aroma, which attracts insects for food source. And also provide pleasant sensory experiences for people. FULL BLOOM
Functionally, they can help to create native landscape, such as grassy woodland, native meadow.
Specific species are chosen as soil stabilizer, nitrogen fixer and windbreak to adapt climate challenges.
The coppicing maintains overall biomass in the meadows so that individual species do not become dominant. It helps achieve good plant diversity and provide some resilience to changing condi ons. COPPICING
The new species are diverse in structure, species family, which can help boost biodiversity and enrich human sensory experiences.
After setting up a new plant community, during a year time, most of plants blooms at late spring. After flowering, coppicing will be introduced. It can help achieve good plant diversity and provide some resilience to changing conditions. It promotes vigorous regrowth in a long term.

T H E WAY T O B I R R A R U N G DESIGN WITH COUNTRY Since from European Se lement in 1835, the surrounding landscape of Birrarung had experienced drama c changes. Its watercourse had been manipulated for a more “produc ve” transporta on, some significant water engineering works was reclama on of swamps, and building up Coode Canal and Victoria dock, straightening the river near the RBG and Herring Island. And during the era of industrial developments, the river was used as drainage and sewerage for waste materials. Timber produc ons during that period also illustrate how European se lers u lize the resources from the natural environment to make more economic benefits. It results in land degrada on for the whole river landscape, which would have devasta ng impacts on the Wurundjeri people’s health and wellbeing.
This aboriginal heritage design and planning studio will focus on the large urbanized riverine system running through the heart of Melbourne, Australia, known as the Birrarung (Yarra River). It satrts with the understanding of “Birrarung as a Living EnƟty”, we have to acknowledge the precep on of Country based on Wurundejri perspec ve. They see Country as a person which is a living en ty with a yesterday, today and tomorrow. At the root of the Indigenous people’s rela onship with landscape is the “Dreaming”, Bunjll is the ancestor to create the everything in the land, therefore they see themself as a part of the integrated landscape. And take the responsibility for maintaining the good health and fer lity of the country is jointly shared by the ancestral beings and their human descendants whose own well-being correlates inƟmately with that of the land. p

In this transect, it is an important and busy transit zone between Melbourne CBD to eastern Greater Melbourne. The train travels from the city all the way to Glen Waverley which is a busy route in Melbourne. Same as the Ci link freeway across along the riverfront which delivers a massive traffic volume for commute.
MAIN TRAFFIC FLOW
The road infrastructures of railway and freeway make this area congested with transporta ons. And there is lack of walkability and connec vity between the train sta on to the riverfront. And the south part of Burnley has been fully developed as a residen al area; the dense building blocks are also considered as a barrier.

Studying the different urban interfaces on the transect helps to understand the spa al sense from the human’s scale. Different land-use func ons affect the interfaces with different a ributes based on accessibility and visual permeability.

Generally, this transect is dominated by massive residen al districts, railway infrastructure and massive green spaces. For example, the fence along the railway tracks and Burnley Golf Course’s edge prevents people from walking across, but people can see the inside.
In this case, it is demanding to improve connec vity in this area through finding the missing links based on exis ng trails. To make this area more walkable and cyclable for pedestrians and cyclists, which building a greater access to Birrarung and a culture consciousness of “Country’

And the front yard at residen al housing acts as a setback to define the boundary between public and private. And the wall of industrial warehouses is impermeable in accessibility physically and visually.

Based on research on Indigenous wayfinding strategy, the Yingbeal songline told by Uncle Bill, indigenous people used river red gum as a direc on tree to find the way. Learn from the science of indigenous wayfinding, how can we develop the connec vity to Birrarung and use a wayfinding strategy to create a sense of place, the ‘Country”?
RIVER RED GUM MOTIF To improve the exis ng trail facili es integra ng indigenous wayfinding strategy. The key design element is based on the exis ng river red gum trees on the site and design interven ons are developed to interpret aboriginal culture and history and provide programs for educa onal purposes along the developed trail.

The wayfinding strategy is to use different categories of signage lead people walk from train sta on to birrarung and crea ng a cultural experience through the journey. The iden fica on signage is to highlight exs ng river red gum or mo f sculptures as an entry statement, and direc onal signage shows people the exact way to Birrarung, and along the trail, it’s installing red gum mo f artefacts as orienta on signage to confirm the right direc on to the river. And informa ve signage will provide informa on to learn some plants or artworks through a journal, it can be an educa onal program.

The street design strategy is to reclaiming more space occupied by vehicle back to pedestrians and. Due to low traffic volume on Madden Grove and surrounding connected streets can provide an alterna ve op on for vehicles to move. It leads to a design decision to change Madden Grove into a one-way road and keeps some car parks only for local households. The new street design extends the pedestrian walkway on the side of the residen al housing, and it provides more space for community uses.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE GI IN FLOOD MITIGATION This project proposes High Speed Rail (HSR) corridor as green infrastructure is an opportunity to carefully apply landscape planning theory and strategies as a planned network of natural and semi-natural areas which will contribute to establishing equilibrium between nature and human se lements. The City of Wyndham and the City of Greater Geelong are two of the fastest growing LGA’s in Australia, with popula on growth and economic ac vity being two of the main drivers shaping this region. The changes currently in play, place ecological and infrastructure systems under extreme pressure leaving exis ng ecology, and infrastructure fragmented and dysfunc onal. The strategy is applying green infrastructure as a planning tool to manage floodriskthroughthemost comprehensive natural ecosystem, which is designing for 100-year flooding to reduce flooding impacts and manage floodwater in both urban and rural context by five planning goals. In urban context, there main types of floodings, they are overflow flooding and riverine flooding. The overflow flooding usually caused by high density of rainfall and low permeability of impervious surfaces to absorb water. 1. To reduce runoff on imprevious surface by installing vegetated swales to collect and absorb water 2. To reduce floodwater by redirec ng runoff into surrounding green space 3. To capture more floodwater in the flood area by maintaining and enhance riparian vegeta on and establishing wetlands to allow hold more water in the landscape

Therefore, the design proposal transforms the vehicle-dominated road into a more walkable pedestrian pathway.
