Rosemaling is a Norwegian form of decorative painting. Poor farmers would travel to paint churches or wealthy homes. The painting would normally happen during winter. Artists eventually tried new ideas and motifs. Rosemaling migrated from Norway to America. Per Lysne came to Stoughton, WI in 1907 and introduced America to Rosemaling. Traditional paint colors were made from local materials. The brushes used were made from the hair of a squirrel’s tail or a cow’s ear.
