Matakana water crisis t was literally all hands to the water pump at Western Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) over the first weekend in May when a request for help was received from Matakana Islanders, who were fast running out of household water.

I

The call came in about lunchtime on Friday 1st May when up to a dozen homes on the island were running dry – some with no water to last them through the night. Welfare and Logistics staff at EOC quickly put a plan in place, called Down-

ers to arrange a water tanker and by 8am the following morning the first tanker load was on the island topping up the tanks. Never was there a more welcome sight to those on the island – one kuia was standing on her deck with tears of relief as the tanker rolled up to provide her household with water. They had completely run dry the previous evening. Western EOC Iwi Liaison coordinator Carlo Ellis said it was a great example of teamwork and collaboration between the island’s whānau, Te Awanui Hauora, Downers and the Western EOC. “The whānau have been amazing from day one looking after people in need, so being able to respond quickly when they reach out is perfect in these times. They were beyond grateful,” says Carlo. The Western EOC iwi relations team had previously established contact with the island early in the COVID-19 lockdown period – so it was simply a matter of connecting the right people and getting the job done, says Carlo. Since the water supplies were deliv-

ered, whānau on the mainland have sent messages of gratitude to EOC as it would have meant them breaking their bubbles to go to the island to help. “It was a huge help,” says Nimmy Ngātai. “We would usually be pretty self-sufficient and sort it ourselves, but with lockdown, it makes it harder. Just knowing our needy whānau can stay safe over there means we can do the same here”. Downer’s Water Reticulation Manager Leslie Cunningham says it was magic the way the whole operation worked out so well and so fast. His emergency driver Barry Frost jumped at the chance to help the islanders out. Barry took two tankers to the island on separate barge trips on Saturday morning, taking a total of 20,000 litres to fill the main tank that supplied the waterless homes. “This operation was as good as it gets – the purchase orders were done swiftly, there were no delays, no questions – just a united effort to get the job done and get those people some water,” says Leslie. We will remember

ust a little missive from me on ANZAC. Yes, we rose at 5am to make a coffee, get the right radio station, find the candle and raise the black and white NZ flag to half mast for it to be raised to the top after the Reveille. From our front deck, all was peaceful with the birds chirping respectfully, various radio stations were tuned in for the ANZAC service from Wellington, and a random music station until National radio was found. I could hear a lone bugle being played. Kids were skipping delightedly. Being up so early was a real treat! The atmosphere was moist with dew but the sky developed into a fitting rosy pink hue just as all eyes were on The Point. The lovely community of Ōmokoroa adorned their letterboxes, windows, and decks with ANZAC memorabilia. The cairn soldier wore poppies and

J

was surrounded by small crosses, the flag fluttered aloft and the large cross stood at its base. Ōmokoroa Point School had placed the crosses in their front lawn. Well done Ōmokoroa. Heather Reynolds, Ōmokoroa.

Lonesome locked down Lab

ello, I’m Jack and I love the f words - family, friends, frisbees and food! The first photo is of me with a grandie taken back when life used to be fun. We always had lots of visitors and most days Dad’s brothers would come around and we would go up to the Point and play frisbee golf. My favourite game. In the weekend, my Mum would play too. And she is such a good player. My job was to watch every throw and if one of the bros (not Mum) did a dumb shot, I would retrieve it. I would even dive down underwater to fetch them if the tide was in. Then I would get heaps of pats and praise and get called Wonder Dog and I’d feel so proud. However, I digress. Now, no-one comes to visit. Not even the boys I grew up with and their lovable grandies. Dad doesn’t take me out in the car any more. The bros don’t come to play golf any more. Mum is so busy being essential that she comes home from work exhausted and has no time for me. Dad still takes me for a walk every day

H

but even then, I’m not allowed to play with my doggie mates. No one stops for a pat and chat but they give me a wide berth instead. So I’m stuck at home with Dad. I can hear the neighbours are home, so when Dad is busy in the garden or talking to his hand (which he does way more now) I can sneak over for a visit. I love going to the neighbours who have kids. They play cricket and I pinch their ball and we have a laugh. I usually get about 10 minutes max before Dad will miss me and call me home. Anyway, now I’ve got myself in big trouble. Someone took a photo of me at the end of our driveway where I was deemed ‘off my property’ and sent it to the dog ranger. Now, Mum and Dad have to pay a $200 fine and I am tied up 24/7. You might hear me barking and crying because I don’t understand. That’s me all sad in the photo below. I thought you humans were meant to be being kind to each other. And where are you all, anyway? By Liz Farrell nzac Day 2020 was set to be a very different day. For myself, the weeks of planning guest speakers, equipment, milo, volunteers, etc. for the Ōmokoroa Community Anzac services, was a non-starter. With no gatherings allowed, a new plan was put in place. The Returned Services’ Association promoted the Stand At Dawn campaign - a hope that many would still get up before the dawn and walk to the ends of their driveways and show solidarity with their neighbours to both honour their forebears, and respect the collective drive to stamp out COVID-19. Our sacrifices so starkly different, but with the same ultimate goal. The RSA teamed up with Radio New Zealand National to produce a live broadcast to complement the Stand At

A

A distant memory Dawn message and from 6am, a twentyminute service was on the air. Many people answered the call, lit candles and stood at their mailboxes at 6am to commemorate the annual day of remembrance. In some areas, musicians played the last post for their neighbours. The number of roadside displays being shown on social media was a wonderful indication of how widespread the support for this day commands, even when staying safe at home in our bubbles. For many, Poppy Day is also an important day. Generally falling on the Friday before Anzac Day, volunteers sit outside supermarkets and distribute collection buckets giving poppies for a donation as a fundraiser for the RSA. This year, for the first time since it began in 1922, Poppy Day has been put on hold. The RSA is yet to release a future date, although there is some speculation that

Matteus Lander was proud to play The Last Post on Anzac morning, and hoped it added to the sense of commemoration for others that may have heard it in the Ōmokoroa neighbourhood. PHOTO: Supplied.

it may coincide with Armistice Day on 11th November. Needless to say, this will have a significant financial impact on the RSA, whose mission is “to remember and care for all those impacted by service for New Zealand”. A special effort

By Paula Gaelic n ANZAC Day that will be remembered. Katikati rallied, and through whatever resources they could find at home they decorated their fences, doors, windows and letterboxes to commemorate. There were so many adornments I could not capture them all. You could see where families had made a special effort and some with personal messages. The Katikati Floral Art Group covered Katikati War Memorial Hall, Memorial Clock and Western Bay Museum with knitted poppies. Steve Graveson from Katikati Open Air Art painted a wonderful painting just for this day of remembrance, which is on display in the door/window of Western Bay Museum. At 6.00am Katikati RSA and Western Bay Museum raised the Australian and New Zealand flags as we always do. It was a very special occasion, and although our War Memorial Square was

not full of people, it was crowded with spirit. The Last Post and The Ode could be heard in the stillness of the morning from families that were having private ceremonies. A brilliant red sunrise shone over our town centre and people throughout the day laid wreaths and poppies. Everyone maintaining their social distancing but paying their respects. At 5.00pm the Australian and New Zealand flags were lowered on an ANZAC Day.

Expanding the bubble to the Garden

By Rachel Jacobs ia ora koutou, as we come to the end of an interesting, challenging and uncertain month of rāhui (noun: a prohibition against a particular area or activity, typically one in force temporarily in order to protect a resource), we begin the slow and carefully planned transition back into our new ‘normal’ for the time being. We don’t underestimate the challenges and hardships that our whānau have faced over this month and are likely to continue facing over the coming months, knowing for some there may not have been any silver linings during this time. However, for some whānau we also take away from this experience the unexpected extra time together, the slowing down to smell the roses, the family walks and bike rides to destinations not known and agendas not required, the movie nights and family dinners. It has given us the opportu-

K

nity to reconnect and ‘permission’ we somehow often need to be content just to stay home. I’m sure we have all learnt something new about each other during this time. A new level of respect, kindness and understanding has also been reached during rāhui, one that I hope we can all take forward with us as we continue to fight this battle together. As we move into this new chapter of living and learning, we have had a chance to really reflect on our teaching practice and our environments. The kaiako at The Garden have been soaking up free online webinars, digging out old articles and readings and really thinking about what their vision and purpose is, what they can fill their teaching kete with. We have enjoyed the development and progression of our private Facebook page, solely for current families as a way to stay connected. Kaiako have stretched their knowledge to create videos, sing songs and read stories to publish in an

online forum which, for some of them, was a learning experience in itself. Not only did they do it, but they did it with so much love and thought into what the tamariki would enjoy and what their interests were before their sudden departure. At The Garden, we have prepared and refreshed our environment to really capture the essence of who we are. Our spaces are natural, inviting, warm and homely. We want to provide a true sense of home away from home, even more important in this time of change and uncertainly. Our tamariki need somewhere to spend their days where they feel welcomed and comfortable, a home filled with aroha. From this sense of belonging, tamariki will be empowered and confident to explore, investigate, inquire and tinker; this is the greatest form of learning through play. Our kaiako are ready and waiting to welcome tamariki back into The Garden whānau, as time and

health and safety regulations permit of course. We are incredibly grateful to be able to take our time to slowly settle the tamariki back in small bubbles, ensuring that not only their physical wellbeing is being taken care of but also their mental wellbeing, as they continue to process just what is going on in their world right now. We normally operate an open-door policy and are still welcoming enquires from families wishing to join The Garden whānau. However, during this level of increased awareness of social distancing, we welcome you to first either phone on 07 548 2036 or email info@thegarden.co.nz and then we will make suitable arrangements according to your questions and needs from there. You can also visit our Facebook page or our website www.thegarden.co.nz to learn a bit more about us. Until next time, take care and keep safe in your little bubbles. Hei konā mai.

Community Board update By Teresa Sage Ōmokoroa Community Board Chair s we go into May of 2020, we realise we are currently living in a time that none of us would have ever imagined happening in our lifetime. We have just come out of four and a half weeks of level 4 lockdown. This was to keep us safe and alive. Level 3 is to maintain that and help keep the virus out. There are many in the community that have not been able to work and others, like myself, have had to find a different way of working from home. There are those of us in our community who are hurting financially and emotionally from COVID 19. It may be hard to comprehend the enormity of what may have happened for us, as our Prime Minister locked us down quickly before the virus had taken hold. We are looking like the first country in the world to have possibly eradicated the virus. I have family and friends all over the world as many of us do. Through family and friends from overseas, many of us have heard the horror stories of what is happening elsewhere in the world. Some of us may well know of someone who has died elsewhere or even here in NZ from the virus. For those who have, our thoughts go out to them. During these difficult and unprecedented times, we as a community have been able to come together in a way that is positive. Here in Ōmokoroa, there has been a wonderful response to the crisis and a sense of community spirit that

A

warms the heart. One of the groups that has arisen out of this crisis is “In This Together”. The group has been able to enlist a group of volunteers that have been able to help our vulnerable and isolated. “In This Together” worked closely with Steve Ling of Fresh Choice at the beginning to ensure that those in need received the help they required. A big thank you must go out to Steve and his staff for all the work they have done. Comments have been made at how helpful and gracious both Steve and his staff have been. Thank you, guys! As a community, we have embraced the outdoors, I have seen many more bicycles and feet pass by my house during the last four weeks. There are people saying hello and acknowledging others as they pass. I know my horse has had many more visitors to say hello at our gate. I have heard that there has been more home baking and shared family dinners. I am aware that while some children are happy to be off school, and many are waiting eagerly to go back, to meet their friends and get back to what life was like before. As we move forward, I ask as a community that we support our local businesses as much as we can. As a Community Board, we are still working hard for our community and while we were not able to have our Community Board meeting in April, work has still been going on behind the scenes as many of us have been using technology to connect and continue to work. In This Together

By Tanya Van Heerden ow. What an interesting time it has been for us all. And so very different for all of us. Some people are saying they feel like they are on holiday, others worried about not being able to work, some people losing their jobs, some concerned about their health issues and those in isolation sitting at home alone day in and day out. It has been a crazy time of mixed emotions, uncertainty, anxiety and even sadness for many. But, one thing we can be sure of, through all of this, we have come out as a much stronger and more close-knit community. We have come to see that there are so many caring and sincere people around us, and we are very blessed to be living in this wonderful piece of paradise. Since the start of In This Together (ITT) group, we have had the pleasure of dealing with our many lovely volunteers, as well as those people needing help. And what an amazing experience it has been so far. Firstly we were overwhelmed by the

W

response from the community wanting to put their hands up to become volunteers for ITT. It was amazing to see just how many people wanted to help those in need and be part of a group offering help during this very difficult time. Secondly, we were overwhelmed as to the number of phone calls of thanks for the work that ITT has done whether it be a grocery shop and delivery, a phone call etc. An elderly community member who lives alone expressed his appreciation to one of our volunteers who calls him on a weekly basis just to check in on him and have a good old chat. He says he cannot begin to describe what that phone call means to him and also the comfort of

knowing that there is somebody there that he can reach out to in a time of need. We had a call from a very distressed lady living in Fielding whose Mum lives here in Ōmokoroa. Her Mum lives alone and has leukaemia. She is very independent and did her shop online to find out that 75 % of what she ordered was out of stock. She called her daughter, very anxious, not knowing what to do as it was the long Easter weekend, and she had very little in her cupboards. Our lovely volunteer delivered a food parcel to the Mum with a couple of extra "treats". This is the message we received from her daughter: "Thank you, thank you, thank you!!. You have no idea how grateful I am. My Mum called me in tears;

she was so relieved. I will be including ITT in my prayers during the lockdown. Thank you for being the Lord's angels in disguise." We would also like to make mention of the great neighbours we have surrounding us. We had so many calls from concerned neighbours asking us to check up on their neighbour. We had one lady who was helping seven of her neighboursdoing shopping, picking up online orders and deliveries etc. So a huge thank you goes out to everyone-our ITT committee, our volunteers, neighbours and to our wonderful community. A special thanks also to Steve Ling and all his staff and volunteers at Fresh Choice. They did a great job through this very stressful time, and we appreciate all the long hours and hard work they put in to make it safer for both the community as well as the staff. So well done Steve. You are a star. And finally, it has been so inspiring to watch as we have so quickly adapted and progressed during this challenging period and that we really are all "In this Together".

Ōmokoroa Volunteer Fire Brigade By Ian Blunt - Chief Fire Officer he month of April saw no slow down in the callout rate. A large fire at the bark plant saw firefighters from Ōmokoroa, Katikati and Tauranga involved for 4-5 hours. In total, there were 7 vegetation fires, 2 alarm activations, and 1 motor minor accident in April. A large 700

T

square metre vegetation fire in Wainui South Road had the potential to escalate dramatically, but firefighters gained control quickly with the help of Katikati and their water tanker. The fire season classification has changed as of 1st May. there are no permits required for open fires in the rural area but please be careful when burning. In the

urban area, a total fire ban is still in place. First responders were called six times through April with two cardiac arrests, breathing problems and chest pains. We are very grateful to Mr Dudley Moore who supplied the First Responders with very lightweight but efficient facemasks to go with the rest of our PPE kit.

IT’S NOT QUITE ‘AS USUAL’ YET BUT…

t’s been an extraordinary time for New Zealand since March. For some, Levels 3 and 4 have been stressful, scary and confusing. Others have taken a compulsory break from their day to day lives and used the time to embark upon new hobbies or exercise regimes. Many have kept working as their roles were deemed essential - those people on the front lines have done an incredible job dealing with difficult situations in hospitals, call centres, supermarkets, rubbish trucks and packhouses, to name just a few. Others in our community have stepped up on a volunteer basis, helping out with shopping and errands for the elderly and vulnerable people in our society, delivering food and medication to those who can’t leave their homes. I’ve felt great pride knowing that the people of the Bay of Plenty are so caring and supportive of each other under such difficult circumstances. Our country’s lockdown has left some industries bereft of customers; I fear we will see many small businesses close down unless special aid is targeted towards helping them when our export markets are not buying, and overseas visitors are not coming. I have received many requests for help from employers having difficulty accessing wage subsidies due to the massive queue of applications MSD are dealing with. It’s great this support was rolled out so quickly after Level 4 commenced, which allowed employers to keep paying staff salaries despite having to close. Now employers are asking for support to pay other outgoings and I will continue to advocate to the Government for tailored support to help businesses innovate and adapt, to employ new staff and to

access local markets. All of us will find our lives altered by the effects of Covid-19. New Zealand is better positioned than many countries for a swift economic recovery, with our primary industries continuing to be in demand overseas but the reality is that, for the foreseeable future, we might be our own largest market. We must support our own local and domestic producers, service providers and retailers. Challenging times lie ahead, without a doubt. But I am confident that, here in the Bay, we are in a great place to support, if not lead, New Zealand’s economic recovery and regeneration. Shop local, save jobs, be positive.

We put a padlock on the gate to ensure people did not enter. At the time of writing, we are about to Parting shot: enter the Covid19 Level 3 alert phase, Did you hear about the tennis ball and and enthusiasm to get back onto the courts is certainly bubbling. Like most the battery that got into a fight? The battery was charged, and the tenNew Zealanders, our members are chafing under the restrictions of Level 4. Ten- nis ball is waiting to go to court. nis is such a great way to get outside and exercise, and our members are keen to get back into it. Under Level 3, people are able to return to play, but only in their bubbles, with restrictions as per government instructions and guidelines as recommended by Tennis NZ. We are yet to determine the degree of tennis activity allowed once we reach Level 2. Let’s hope that Tennis courts are still out of bounds until further notice. New Zealand can PHOTO: Supplied.

Electorate boundary confirmation By Hon Scott Simpson MP For Coromandel ovid-19 has drastically affected New Zealand, our electorate, the way we work and do business. The vast majority of New Zealanders have been doing what has been asked of them, and that’s a good thing, but as the weeks drag out the real impacts on people’s lives and livelihoods are being to emerge and take a profound toll on individuals, families and businesses. Alert Level 3 still means working from home and staying at home for most people. Staying in our bubbles, even if slightly extended, remains key. Travel is limited,

C Scott Simpson MP for Coromandel Thames 07 868 3529 Kaiaua 09 232 2588 Katikati 07 549 4312 mpcoromandel@parliament.govt.nz scottsimpson.co.nz Funded by the Parliamentary Service. Authorised by Scott Simpson MP, 614 Pollen St Thames.

and the advice is that we should not move out of our homes unless necessary. As I write this, the numbers of new Covid-19 cases continue to decrease, but as we’ve already seen, this virus should be taken very seriously. We need to continue to practice social distancing, keep practising good hygiene and, above all, staying at home unless absolutely necessary. Happily, some local businesses are open for business via online orders and phone orders and using contactless delivery and pick up methods. Now is the very best time to please support local businesses and make use of these alternatives when and how possible. Doing so shows support in our com-

munity for those who have had their businesses completely disrupted these last six long weeks. Your custom will never be more appreciated than now and over the coming months. The Electoral Commission has released its final report on the 2020 electorate boundaries. This means that, at the stroke of a pen, Ōmokoroa and the surrounding area has been moved into the Coromandel Electorate. I’m looking forward to getting to know local folk and the community and to picking up on the great work that’s been done by my friend and colleague Bay of Plenty MP, Todd Muller. Authorised by Scott Simpson MP, 614 Pollen St, Thames.

Ōmokoroa Public Art Group By Alie Henderson, Chair ur major achievement in the last few months of 2019 was the installation in October, and public unveiling in December, of Te Punga: The Anchor Stone, a stunning sculpture by Ashley Grant, on the foreshore of the Ōmokoroa Domain. It is fitting at this point to acknowledge the leadership of Janine Birch, as Chairperson of OPAG since its inception in 2010. Janine has been tireless in leading the planning and overseeing the implementation of three significant public art works in the Ōmokoroa community: The wrought iron panels at Western Ave, The Ōmokoroa Lizard, and Te Punga-The Anchor Stone.

Janine continues to be a member of OPAG in 2020, with myself now taking the role of Chairperson, and we welcome two new faces to the group: Ashley Grant, and John Evans. Current projects include a replacement for our Lizard, which was sadly stolen last year. Discussions with all those involved in the original sculpture, and with Ōmokoroa ITM (who have generously offered considerable sponsorship for a replacement sculpture) are underway, and we hope to have a new Lizard in place as soon as possible. We are actively working on two other projects, in association with Western Bay of Plenty District Council: a sculpture which we hope will be placed at the in-

tersection of Tralee Street and Ōmokoroa Road, and a mural which we hope will be painted on the changing sheds at the Ōmokoroa Domain, as part of the new playground development. We are delighted that Becks Chambers (WBOPDC) is now acting as our liaison person for all Council-related matters, and she has already provided great support in event planning and in discussions with WBOPDC. We are also in conversation with Phillip Martelli (WBOPDC) to ensure that public artworks are an integral part of the planning for the continued development of Ōmokoroa. Send someone a virtual hug

By Maree Morton Sports coordinator

By Lorraine Wilks Fragrance of Flowers

i there lovely families, I hope you have all been staying safe. Just an update that there will be no sport in Level 3 of the lockdown. There are 32 associations that have agreed community sport will be the main priority when we are allowed to return to the turfs and fields. All national representative tournaments for the remainder of 2020 have been cancelled. A decision on whether there will be any National, Secondary, or Schools tournament and Anchor AIMS Games taking place this year is expected over the coming months. There is a possibility that we may be able to return to some form of sports activity during Level 2, however, this is still being worked through and it is anticipated that we will have more information on this around Friday 1st May. Once we have clarity on what we can and cannot do during Levels 1 and 2 we will communicate this to our community so everyone can prepare accordingly. Health and Safety is going to be paramount when we return to any sport as we strive to provide a safe environment for everyone involved. Sport NZ is currently working with the Ministry of Health and other organisations around requirements for sports facilities, including Contact Tracing. We are sure everyone is feeling like me at the moment - frustrated that we can’t be outside undertaking activities that bring joy to our lives. Covid-19 is a unique situation that is new to everyone and we all have a responsibility to do our bit for society by following the rules to get through this crisis. If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch by emailing sport@pahoia.school.nz

write this article at the end of the first week of being at Covid19 Alert Level 3. As a business owner, we have had to make huge adjustments to how we operate, and the first week back has been rather chaotic. Everything is taking time as we transition from Level 4 to Level 3. As we re-enter our communities, we all need to work out which businesses have re-opened, which ones haven’t. Sadly, some companies have had to close up completely. Courier drivers are working overtime, and freight can take a little longer to be delivered, so I

urge everyone to: “Be Kind… Be Patient…” Lockdown is hard for everyone. It is particularly hard for families celebrating the birth of a child or if an elderly parent takes ill because we cannot visit them or even hug them. Let flowers bridge that gap. Send someone a virtual hug through flowers. Fragrance of Flowers is accepting orders online, by telephone and via email. We can make (contactless) deliveries. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept walk-in orders, as the shop is operating at Covid-19 Alert Level 3. Still, you can buy flowers and houseplants from our flower-stand at Katikati Four Square on Main Road, Katikati.

Commuter ferry survey Scholarship winners selected

By Matthew Farrell mokoroa commuters are being asked whether they’d consider taking a ferry to the Tauranga CBD or Mount Maunganui. The economic development agency Priority One wants to gauge the response to a potential commuter ferry service through a 10-minute online SurveyMonkey form. Priority One hopes to understand commuter behaviour and attitudes better. The agency says it is looking to talk specifically to people that commute to work to the Tauranga CBD area or neighbouring suburbs from Mt Maunganui or Ōmokoroa and surrounding areas. Priority One would like to hear from commuters who think they would take a

What a great way to commute to work, but the reality is the service has to be priced right.” “It would suck to live near the Point. Rats will play while the trappers are away By Margot McCool hile New Zealand has been in lockdown, life has no such restrictions on the pests that inhabit our precious native habitats. The warm weather will have been perfect for rats, stoats and possums to thrive, while pest control volunteers have been cooped up at home, unable to continue their valiant efforts to control the numbers of these destructive pests. However once Level 2 or below is reached, Friends of The Blade will be out in force to bring these numbers down

Grow your brain - when you move By Taryn Johnson of Maths Mattas

oving our bodies helps our fitness, strengthens us, improves our quality of life and makes us brainier. Exercise has the same effect on our brain as morphine, but with healthy addictive consequences! Exercise is more effective at combatting depression and anxiety than the most effective drugs. When we exercise, it increases our confidence and empowers us to take on the daily challenges of life with more energy and a better mindset. We do not need to run a marathon, belong to a gym

M

or experience pain to achieve the gain. We just need to move, and move regularly, throughout the day. Find a way to make exercise a part of your lifestyle. We are never too old to start getting fitter. For example, walking speed is a great predictor of life expectancy so if you like walking, increase the amount you walk, which in turn will increase your speed. If you add five minutes a week to your daily walk, you will soon establish a good walking habit. The way you rise from a sitting position on the floor is another predictor of life expectancy; can you get up without putting either hand or either knee on the floor? The less

ª ÚÞ Å å ĥ

extra support you need by way of knee/s and hand/s, the longer your life expectancy. We need strength and aerobic training. In other words, we need to build muscle and lung capacity to grow our brains. With the internet and so many different exercise classes and gyms available we can all find something that we enjoy, or dislike least. Put on your favourite music and dance around the house, with or without a partner. Once an exercise habit is established the improvement in life experience becomes the motivation to keep it up. This week, exercise to grow your brain and add to your life expectancy!

Level 3 means we are back to work! - We have implemented strict Physical Distancing and Hygiene Protocols to ensure your safety

- Experienced professional 2 person team - High quality finishes that last

ADVERTORIAL

Let’s talk teeth Bernie Limbrick

District Diva! Bernie knows Omokoroa like the back of her hand, whether its houses, or units or a block of land. Her local knowledge is something to behold, and definitely worth its weight in gold. Anything short of perfection will certainly not do, as she takes great pleasure in working for you. Whether you’re buying or selling her goal is the same, to help you manoeuvre through the real estate game. Her motto’s as important as bees are to honey, “The most money for your home, athe most home for your money!” LIKES: Chocolate; Loves animals; Volunteering; A good chat. DISLIKES: Sloppiness; Cold rainy days; Clutter; Sardines.

Little effort, big effect hile we are all sitting at home waiting for a new normal to set in, it’s no surprise that we feel as if we can’t do much but… wait. Not even dentists are allowed to look after your teeth the way they would want and the way you would deserve. But wait – when it comes to teeth you can actually do a lot because your oral health depends to a significant degree on your daily dental hygiene. If you do it correctly and regularly, sticking to good habits can prevent a lot of dental and oral problems. After all, prevention is better than cure.

• do it for two minutes each time (set a timer initially to get a feel for how long two minutes are, or play a two-minute piece of music on your phone), • see your dentist two times a year for a check-up and dental hygiene appointment.

This column is brought to you by Omokoroa Dental Surgery.

The essence of home has never been so important

A HOME FOR EVERY GENERATION

• brush and floss your teeth two times a day,

Two of the most common problems we see in our daily work are gum disease and cavities. Unless there is a rare, underlying medical condition, these problems are preventable by good, regular oral hygiene. Start now, and the rule of two will become part of your new normal in a few weeks.
