This issue of Kidsguide is devoted to field trips (in better words: awesome day trips) that make learning come alive in kid-friendly ways. These are outings where your kids can actually experience their curriculum, grade by grade, IRL! And, lucky for us, Kidsguide has tons of places to do that.

Each offers a unique opportunity to expand book learning by talking to experts, and getting hands-on with panning for gold, observing the stars, shooting a rocket (yikes!).

There are also workers on hand to teach kids about the importance of agriculture and answer a curious little one’s five million questions about the animals. Not only is it always just fun to see pigs—whee!—but it fits nicely in with the kinder life science lesson, “What do animals need to survive?”

What better way to do that than to play in an actual kidsized city? Kids can get their dramatic play on in 17 interactive exhibits including a junior post office, home, store, farm, bank and construction site—so much fun, but with a serious education basis. “Through this purposeful play, students not only learn about how the world works, but they strengthen their communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity skills,” says Linda Hunter, MA, MFT, an early education expert at Pretend City. And if they’re going to try out a different life, they may as well go royal! Kids can live the castle life by trying on royal costumes, testing out a rope bed and practicing archery and swordmanship. Spider Pavilion The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

Get up close and personal with lots and lots of spiders in the Spider Pavilion, the only one in the U.S. Hang out and observe arachnids, including orb weavers, tarantulas, jumping spiders and more in this open-air (and safe) space. Up the creepy factor by planning a trip around Halloween.

If you miss the show dates (September 16 November 25, 2018) or someone in your party is icked out by spiders, there is plenty your 1st grader will love, especially the huge, all-new Dinosaur Hall including interactive exhibits like a fossil dig and the T-Rex growth series with a baby, juvenile and sub-adult T-Rex (he goes by Thomas). GRADE 2 Excavator Tour La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

Lindo Mexico Exhibit Children’s Museum at La Habra

Play Mexican-style carnival games like “Loteria” and step back in time at the Aztec open air market where you can pretend buy fish, mangos and iguanas and then grind corn on a metate on the porch of your Aztec house. At Vamos a Bailar, kids can dress up in Folklorico costumes and learn dance steps from an instructor. Admission: $10.

GRADE 3 Human Nature at Autry Museum of the American West

Step outside into the 7,000-square-foot ethnobotanical garden, with 60 native plants and info about how they were used by Native Americans, plus a wetlands cove, pond, basalt columns and cool waterfall. Before you go, be sure to print out the Plant Detective Scavenger Hunt on their website. Weekends, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., you can also pan for gold. Admission: $6-14, free on the second Tuesday of every month.

Galvin Physics Forest Kidspace Children’s Museum

Your 3rd grader can find out for themselves at the Physics Forest, almost an acre of outdoor space with 12 hands-on activities including Giant Levers, a physics-based version of tug of war. They can also play, er, experiment with shooting bottle rockets, test out the tennis ball launcher and build a roller coaster.

GRADE 4 Fourth graders delve into California history, meaning you will be making at least one late night run to Michaels for an integral piece for their mission model.

Legacy of Saint Serra Exhibit Mission San Juan Capistrano

Check out the small eight room adobe home built in 1826 and discover how Manuel Dominguez, his wife Maria Ingracia Cota and their six daughters lived. On October 6 and 7, there is a Battle of Domiguez Hill Reenactment, plus activities for the pacifist kids like husk doll making, tortilla making, cattle roping, adobe brick making and gold panning. Admission: free. The museum is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

GRADE 5 Centered in the Universe at Griffith Observatory

The show travels back to the big bang and through a universe filled with galaxies to find our cosmic origins and discover our true place in the cosmos. The show asks fundamental questions about our place in the Universe like: Who are we?

Where did we come from? Why is the world the way it is? (Planetarium people talk about heady stuff like that on the regular.) It also points out the cosmos don’t revolve around us—which could be a timely message for certain hormonal teens. If you hit an evening show on a clear night, you can follow it with a free look through the telescopes with a knowledge demonstration on hand to tell you what you’re looking at. Admission: $3-7.

US Army Camel Experiment The Drum Barracks Civil War Museum

In 1861, when a division of U.S. Army Dragoons were ordered to Los Angeles to help defend it from secessionist threat, they brought 36 camels with them. This “Camel Experiment” was initiated in the late 1850s because the Army thought camels would be useful in desert warfare. Check out artifacts from

Pacific Marine Exploration Cruise Ocean Institute

Pompeii: The Exhibition Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum

(Back story, if you’re still innocent: Mount Vesuvius erupted suddenly mid-morning on August 24, 79 A.D. Within 24 hours, the Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed—and perfectly preserved—under 15 feet of ash and volcanic debris. The ash acted as a preservative and later explorers discovered a city frozen in time.)
