This year when we updated the information in Petsguide, we were again amazed at what this area offers our BFFs: birthday disco parties, bacon-flavored cocktails at Yappy Hour, dog swim clubs with dock diving, private sheep herding classes, blueberry facials, urban mushing … and that’s just scratching the surface.

Add to this the fact that it happens to be the Year of the Dog––which only comes around every 12 years––and that means “pawty” time! Since we won’t have another chance to combine all this pawesomeness again until 2030, we’re getting this dog celebration started now. Our editorial on pages 3-4 is a primer to pampering your perfect pooch. And while we know your dog will love you no matter what, we have suggestions to take this way over the top—homemade peanutbutter pumpkin treats anyone? In the process, you’ll find some great resources while increasing the love bond you’ve already started. Fear not cat, bird and reptiles lovers, we’ve got lots of resources for you, too… along with 34 pages of all the practical stuff your pets need/use every day. FYI: The Calendar section is back (you spoke, we listened). Remember to always check our website. We’re updating events regularly, plus you can sign up for The Scoop, a bi-monthly email with the latest and greatest events/tips/deals. Now go party with your pup!

hoever said “It’s a dog’s life” clearly didn’t read this issue of Petsguide because they’d see that today’s furry friends have it pretty darn good. There are doggie gyms and dog parks all over the place, even dine-in doggie menus and birthday cakes. Since it’s the Year of the Dog, we’ve chased down some extra special ways to celebrate your four-legged friend and show ‘em that they’re a Good Dog, yes, they are, yes they are.

1) Take Them Somewhere Special Hit a Dog Park or Beach

Take them to a dog beach or dog park to give them a chance to run around like maniacs and get in a little social time. Dogs are kinda like toddlers—they need to get their energy out. And a worn out dog is a dog who isn’t quite as interested in chewing up your shoe. (No guarantees. Shoes are pretty tempting...) If you’re looking for the dog equivalent of a rave, try a super popular spot like Dog Beach in Huntington Beach (www.dogbeach.org). For more controlled chaos, try the El Dorado Park Dog Park in Long Beach. Like many dog parks, it has separate areas for big and little dogs. And if you and your dog prefer a more chill vibe, look for a small neighborhood park. Check out pages 1820 for lots of options.

dogs, hamburger or peanut butter bones. There’s even a low-fat entrée for dogs who haven’t been hitting the dog park enough. Dogs at The Lazy Dog Restaurants (www.lazydogrestaurants.com) can feast on rice with chicken or hamburger and enjoy a nice big bowl of water. Spot can also sample the fare from the dog menus at The Attic in Long Beach (www.theatticonbroadway.com) and several Rock & Brews locations (www.rockandbrews. com). (Google your town and the phrase “dog menu” to find nearby options.) For dogs that prefer going out for dessert, most Sprinkles locations have sugar-free cupcakes frosted with yogurt and Starbucks has “pupuccinos” on its secret menu (it’s a free cup of whipped cream, shhh!). Keep in mind that even at super dog-friendly places, dogs have to behave, be leashed and, sorry, no eating from each others’ plates.

3) Get Your Dog Moving Get physical with your dog at an indoor dog park or doggie gym. Zoom Room in Huntington Beach (www.zoomroom.com) offers a variety of classes to teach your dog agility, obedience and tricks. There are also playgroups so your dog can learn to socialize with other hounds. They are always supervised

pert who knows the Secret Wisdom of soft fluffy fur. “We use professional grade dog shampoos and conditioners, the best top-of-the-line products. Plus the brushing with a blow dry leaves a smooth silky finish, which most people will not do at home,” says Karen Mahmalji, owner of Top Dog Barkery (www.topdogbarkery.net). If your dog requires uber-pampering, Paws Chateau in Huntington Beach (www.pawschateau.com) offers a full-on spa day with massages, pawdicures, facials and aromatherapy. If you’re sticking with the bathtub at home, remember human shampoo isn’t good for dogs and actually can encourage parasites and bacteria.

5) Take Them to Yappy Hour Is your dog a socialite? Then they simply must be seen at The Yappy Hour at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel (www.ritzcarlton.com) for the water flavored with bacon, chicken or beef. (If none of those are your drink, try the more hu-

9 Ways to Pamper Your Pooch If you’re a dog park or beach newbie, there are rules of etiquette—some of them are for safety, some are so other dog owners don’t glare at you. Dogs should be older than four months old, spayed or neutered, and not pregnant or in heat. They should already be socialized, not dog-reactive and able to follow basic commands, especially the one when they actually come when called. Pick up after your pet and even though some parks have bags, bring a few of your own just in case. Keep an eye on your dog and put big dogs in the big dogs section, small dogs in the small dog area to minimize the chances of terrorizing/being terrorized. And if your dog seems super frightened or doesn’t seem comfortable at the park, don’t force them to be sociable. Some dogs, just like some people, would rather hang out at home.

2) Dine with Your Dog Although it’s officially legal to have your dog sit with you outside on any restaurant patio in California, “legal” is different than “welcomed.” Call ahead to make sure that a restaurant is dog-friendly, or even better, find one that actively reaches out to doggie diners. At The Park Bench Cafe in Huntington Beach (www.parkbenchcafe. com), there’s a special dog menu including hot more at www.petsguidemagazine.com

by a trainer in case a dog isn’t getting the idea. Your canine can also up their doggie skills by taking classes to work on their Frisbee game, learn scent work and/or improve their manners at home at Jump Start Dog Sports (www.jumpstartdogsports.com). Check the Dog Sports section on pages 25-26 for tons of cool ideas including walking groups, flyball and even sheep herding classes.

4) Pamper Your Pup

Give Them The Royal Bath Treatment Turn your dirty dog into a (temporarily) clean pooch with an extra special bath. If you don’t mind getting a little wet (that is, completely soaked), you can go the self-serve route. At most DIY groomer locations (list on pages 17-18) they provide shampoo and conditioner, ear-cleaning pads, brushes, Furminator, towels and aprons to keep you dry–– some even offer blueberry facials! If you can never quite recreate that silky feel dogs get post-groomer, you’ll have to go to an ex-

man-appropriate Merlot Over and Play Dead or Chateau d’Og Cabernet Sauvignon.) Yappy Hours are also available at Healthy Spot locations and the Paw Bar in Belmont Shore’s Pussy and Pooch (www.pussyandpooch.com/belmont-shore) where dogs can dine on a selection of meats, simmering stews and freshly prepared bowls, plus dog beer and a dessert. Doggie bags are available for takeout orders, natch. petsguide summer/fall 2018 3

6) Let Them Eat Cake A party for your dog? Yes, please. At Zoom Room (www.zoomroom.com), dog partiers get exclusive use of the gym, food, a mini-agility lesson and Doggy Disco, which involves flashing lights, your choice of music and a bunch of crazy dogs chasing each other. Pussy and Pooch (www.pussyandpooch.com/ belmont-shore), a place that doesn’t shy away from a double entendre, opens their luxe Paw Bar to dogs and their friends to “party with your bitches.” And Top Dog (www.topdogbarkery.net) offers free “Barkday Pawties” with singing, photos, and doggie treat gift bags, if you order customized K-9 cake. (Dog cake flavors including Peanut Butter Cake, Pumpkin and Apples-n-Oats with optional bacon.) Do dogs dig it? “Most dogs act like little kids at a child’s birthday party!” says Mahmalji of Top Dog Barkery. “They get excited, they run around with each other, and in pup games, they perform tricks for treats.”

7) Buy Them Something Special The ideal toy is something durable, reusable and entertaining. And if a treat is somehow involved, you’re golden. KONG toys (www.kongcompany.com) are longtime favorites because they’re sturdy and dogs really have to work to get at the treats inside. The well-made dog puzzles by Nina Ottosson (www. nina-ottosson.com) are good for smart and/or bored dogs because they add a little challenge to accessing those treats. If you have a super energetic dog, a ChuckIt! Ball Launcher (www.chuckit-toys.co.uk) will help get their energy out (for now) by launching a ball far, far away. And chewers will like the insanely sturdy GoughNuts Ring (www.goughnuts.com). If your dog somehow manages to chew into it, it will reveal a colored layer that reminds you to get a new toy, stat. For simple fetch games, go with classics like a tennis ball, a dog Frisbee or sturdy rope toy.

8) Splurge and Take a Road Trip If you can afford it, take your posh pooch to The Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel (www.ritzcarlton.com) for a weekend getaway, including such amenities as a hand-painted water dish, a plush doggie bed, a chew toy, a doggie menu and a Vista View dog walking trail map. At La Casa Del Camino in La-

4 petsguide summer/fall 2018

guna Beach (www.lacasadelcamino.com), there’s a welcome treat and special toy for all good puppers at the front desk, pet-friendly dining at the Rooftop Lounge and staffers who know the best local hikes, dogs beaches and pet-friendly businesses. If you and Fido accidentally left your disposable income in your other wallet, La Quintas and Motel 6s aren’t fancy but they’re dog-friendly and don’t tack on an extra pet fee. Or you can “ruff” it with your dog on a camping trip. Pets are welcome at many of our local stunning SoCal campsites including Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach and O’Neill Regional Park in Trabuco Canyon.

9) Make Them Something Nice Dogs are not known for their culinary discernment, but just because they’ll happily eat that old piece of OMG-what-the-heck-IS-that? they found on the sidewalk doesn’t mean they won’t appreciate a home-cooked dinner. And when you’re making the food yourself, you’ll know you’re giving them only the good stuff. Here’s an easy recipe to try at home: – 6 c water – 1 lb ground turkey – 2 c brown rice – 1 tsp dried rosemary – 8 oz frozen cauliflower, carrots and broccoli mixture Place the water, ground turkey, rice, and rosemary into a large pot. Stir until the ground turkey is broken up and evenly distributed throughout the mixture; bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the frozen vegetables, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Refrigerate until using. (source: Allrecipes.com) If you want your dog to have homemade dog food, but don’t actually want to be the one at home making it, you can have it delivered to your doorstep. OC Doggie Dinners (www.ocdoggiedinners. com) offers five different entrees made with simple, healthy ingredients like fish and yams. JustFoodForDogs (www.justfoodfordogs.com) will set you up with personalized meals based on your dog’s age, activity level and breed. Bone appetite!

No matter what you choose to do, or not do, your dogs will love you anyway. They just want to be hanging out with you, especially if it involves a W-A-L-K. As long as you’re giving them enough pets (correct amount: 87 billion. Per day.) and there are no jerky squirrels in your yard, you’re gonna be just fine.

Bake Your Dog Happy With Homemade Treats You can trick out these treats by using cookie cutters to make bone shapes or just make plain old circles. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect—dogs aren’t exactly picky.

Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Dog Treats – 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour – 2 eggs – ½ cup canned pumpkin – 2 tablespoons peanut butter – ½ teaspoon salt – ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a ½-inch-thick roll. Cut into ½-inch pieces. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes. Source: Allrecipes.com

Agencies that offer rescued pets for adoption and/or referrals for adoption. Many organizations have pictures of available pets on their website. An application process is required prior to adoption. Most animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Many organizations also provide rescue services, including owner surrenders (also see Pet Assistance), and volunteer opportunities, such as pet foster homes and adoption events. Also see: the Calendar for adoption events, and Shelters. • Beagles and Buddies 23430 U.S. Hwy. 18, Apple Valley (626) 444-9664 www.beaglesandbuddies.org B&B’s 15-acre sanctuary is open weekdays by appointment; and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., with open-house-style adoptions. Applications also help them decide which dogs to bring to mobile adoption events (visit their website for dates and locations). Every dog is microchipped with prepaid registration, spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed, and leaves freshly bathed with leash/collar and all medical records. They are fearful of people and survive on their own outdoors. A feral cat is not likely to ever become a lap cat or enjoy living indoors. Ferals are most often found living outdoors in groups known as colonies. The cats in a colony share a common food source and territory and may include not only ferals, but also strays. Trap-Neuter-Return is an effective and humane way to stabilize community cat populations. Cats are humanely trapped and taken to a veterinarian,

where they are neutered and vaccinated. Kittens and socialized cats are placed into loving homes. Healthy, adult community cats (cats who are weary of human contact) are returned to their colony site, where they are often provided continuing care by volunteers. Many of the cat rescues in this section have resources or a TNR team that provides training and information on Trap-Neuter-Return. Call and visit their websites for more details. Keep in mind, if you choose to feed a community cat, be responsible and spay/neuter, vaccinate, license and provide veterinary care for the cat.

The standard holding period for stray animals to be reclaimed does not apply to owner-surrendered pets, who may not be held long enough to be adopted prior to euthanization. Some rescue operations accept owner-surrendered pets, allowing the pets to be adopted; see Adoption and Rescue, Pet Assistance and Shelters. Lost and Found Pets If you have lost your pet: 1) Drive the neighborhood with a flashlight (after dark), whistle, your dog’s leash and a current photo, combing parks, schools and open areas. Bring a friend with you to field any phone calls on your cell phone. 2) Call your local animal control office (see Animal Control in this section) for recent pick-ups and found pet reports. 3) Search www.petharbor.com, a service of the Humane Society, for listings and pictures of animals brought into shelters, updated hourly. If you have not found your pet after searching, register your pet as lost to receive an email when matching animals are listed by a shelter or registered as found on the site. 4) Blanket a five-mile radius with “Lost Dog” signs. Include a picture, breed, color and your phone number; listing a “reward” helps too. Leave flyers at houses on your street, shelters, pet-supply stores, vet offices, groomers, dog parks, supermarkets, the post office and coffee shops. Post “Lost Dog” ads on Craigslist, social media, and Nextdoor for at least two weeks. 5) Personally visit all shelters in your area; neighboring cities often contract with different shelters. Visit as often as possible. If the shelter policy allows, leave your contact information with a recent photo of your pet; shelter staff cannot always provide notification, but most will provide as much assistance as possible. See Shelters for location information. 6) Visit www.findtoto.com, www.fidofinder.com, www.pipmypet.com, www. thecenterforlostpets.com and www.whistle.com, “Amber Alerts” for lost or stolen pets; fees apmore at www.petsguidemagazine.com

If you have found an animal: 1) Check for ID tags, or drive him to your vet’s office to have him scanned for an ID microchip. 2) You can also put him on a leash and tell him to “go home!” He might lead you straight to his door, or to neighbors who know him. 3) By law you’re required to register him at the local animal shelter, because that’s likely the first place his owner will look. If you decide to search for the owner on your own, call and register the dog at local shelters and register the pet as found at www.petharbor.com; matching descriptions will be emailed to owners who have registered lost pets. 4) If you decide to take the animal to a shelter, you can find your city’s shelter on page 24. At the shelter, the animal will be scanned for microchip ID and logged. Generally, stray animals are held for an owner-reclamation period prior to being available for adoption. If you are worried about the life of the animal, always ask the shelter about their policy before taking the animal in. Tip: Many rescue organizations offer advice and assistance, you can find rescues on pages 5-8. 5) If you cannot transport the animal to a shelter or find the owner on your own, call your local animal control office (see page 11).

parks, beaches, & trails Dog parks require that your dogs are current on vaccinations and that you clean up after your dogs. When visiting a leash-free dog park, keep them on leash before you go into the park and when you exit, and do not bring female dogs in heat. City and regional parks allow leashed dogs on trails and throughout other recreation areas. Park websites list additional rules and regulations. Trail use requires that all dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet. Many trails are shared by equestrians, bicyclists and pedestrians. Unless otherwise noted, no water or waste bags are provided, please trek with your dogs prepared and bring your own supplies. Also see Dog Sports and Fitness, and Training Programs.
