hey sneak table scraps faster than a speeding bullet, they can bowl you over like a locomotive, and they’re able to leap straight into our hearts in a single bound. There’s no doubt our pets have super powers. For this special issue of Petsguide, we’ve rounded up a few jaw-dropping tales that prove just how adaptable, intelligent, resourceful and resilient our animals can be. Trapped in a clothes dryer? Walking cross-country? Stranded by a hurricane? These four-legged superheroes are sure to amaze. And even if you’re more of the Clark Kent type, you too can get in on the action by following the Superhero Moves you’ll find after each story, meant to give you and your precious pet an amazing life together with your own very happy ending.

500 Mile Reunion With a heavy heart, Mark Wessells dropped off his 3-year-old black Labrador, Bucky, with his dad in Winchester, Virginia, when dogs were banned from his Myrtle Beach community. Bucky, it turns out, had other plans. Bucky went missing. A few weeks later, Good Samaritan Brett Gallagher was out walking his own yellow Lab when they found a scrawny-but-friendly black dog trudging through their South Carolina town. After scanning Craigslist and local missing dog ads, Gallagher took the pooch for a checkup, where a microchip revealed the dog’s identity: it was Bucky. “He was going nuts when the vet called him by his real name,” Gallagher told ABC News. “His ears went right up.” After a 500-mile walk— roughly from SoCal to Tucson—Bucky was reunited with his long-lost owner.

Your Own Superhero Moves: For quick reunions, keep your dog outfitted with ID tags and a microchip. Larger pet stores have instant tag machines, or you can choose slide-on tags, embroidered collars or wooden tags. You can get a quality microchip (do some quick research first) for 20 bucks or less at some vaccination clinics. Check page 20 for resources. Dog Teaches Kids to Read! When her parents brought little Skyler to her local library to read with Tank the Great Dane, she flatly refused. “That’s OK,” said Tank’s handler, “we can just talk and Tank will learn.” On the next visit, Tank’s handler brought out a picture book and coached Skyler to make up a story for the dog. On the next visit, Tank’s handler pulled out a lift-theflap book featuring Spot the Dog. This time, Skyler started to sound out words. Twelve weeks later, Skyler is now reading at grade level with confidence, reports Josie Gavieres, founder of BARK (Beach Animals Reading with Kids), an 8-year-old non-profit that dispatches dogs to 100+ schools and libraries. BARK teams also visit nursing homes, senior living facilities and veterans’ centers, and even help de-stress college students during finals week. Down but not Out Hunting down a photography store five years ago, Petsguide reader Claire Vinet found herself at a red light in Compton, where she watched in horror as a “very matted and dirty dog” was hit by a car and took off running. Vinet punched the gas and went on the search. Within seconds, an old man on a bike rode up, asked her what was wrong and told her to wait. After “what seemed an eternity,” he reappeared carrying the dog.

Terrified, emaciated and covered with ticks, the pooch miraculously had no visible injuries. Vinet scooped it into her car and, with a full checkup and shave the next day, the street dog was transformed into a “suburban princess” named Fiona. “As the saying goes,” she said, “we lived happily ever after. There is no greater joy than saving a life and making that life as good as it deserves to be.” Your Own Superhero Moves: Ready for a new pet? Hundreds of homelessbut-loveable dogs and cats are available at your local shelter (see page 30) or rescue agency (page 5). Then, do your part to control overpopulation by making sure your new pet is spayed or neutered. Find affordable options on page 22. The Kitty who Loved Pop-Tarts After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, The Humane Society convinced Southern California animal communicator, Terri Steuben, to join their disaster response crew. On one memorable day, Steuben’s team stepped inside a dark and smelly home, filled with mud and damp clutter. “Lying on top of a stack of papers was our catch: a big cream-colored cat with beautiful green eyes. When she saw us, she got up, jumped to the kitchen counter and stood proudly next to three boxes of strawberry Pop-Tarts that had been clawed opened and eaten through.” A fourth box was in the cupboard, saved for later. “It was a shock for us,” Steuben said, “since we had been seeing so many emaciated animals.” Cracking open a can of cat food, Steuben and her partner coaxed the 22-pound cat and its huge belly (most cats are 9-10 pounds!) into a dog kennel for the ride back to the shelter outside New Orleans, where “Jasmine” was reunited with her family. “We knew our Pop-Tart Kitty was one of the

Stuff a duffel bag for a quick getaway with pet food, drinkable water, a manual can opener, any medications, a first-aid kit, a leash and/or carrier, cat litter and a pan, a blanket or bed, current photos and your veterinarian’s name and number. Sit, Stay, Make Me a Sandwich! Retired Wofford College psychology professor John W. Pilley used his newfound spare time to teach his border collie, Chaser, more than 1,000 words, including the names for 800 stuffed animals, 116 balls and 100+ plastic and rubber items.

Appliance Adventures Daryl Humby’s roommate left the lid of the washing machine open while he went to grab more clothes. Unfortunately, Humby’s six-month-old Siberian forest cat, Natasha, jumped inside and spent the next 40 minutes in the permanent press cycle. Thanks to a trip to the ER, she lived to meow about it. Across the country, an Oklahoma City barn cat named Louis was stashed inside a refrigerator for safe keeping by the family’s four-year-old until the boy’s dad found the cat a month later—seven pounds lighter but still feisty. Your Own Superhero Moves: Pets can get into all sorts of pickles, but you can prevent problems by pet-proofing. Count heads when opening and closing appliances, closets and cupboards. Stash medications and cleaners out of reach. Keep trash cans covered or in a latched cabinet. Cover electrical outlets with plastic plugs. Keep wires, mini-blind and drapery cords out of reach. And choose houseplants wisely; many are toxic to pets. Check aspca.org. Saved by Facebook! When Kyle Bowser of Massachusetts rushed off to pick up her daughter, she left a bag of groceries on the counter. When they got home, the family pooch, Winnie, was sitting next to an empty twopound bag of frozen onion rings. Gulp! Kyle posted a funny photo of the perpetrator on Facebook and, luckily, a friend quickly pointed out that onions are toxic to dogs. After a call to the Pet Poison Hotline and a trip to the hospital, Winnie made it back home with a clean bill of health and her trademark hearty appetite. Your Own Superhero Moves: Who knew? A long list of delicious human foods are actually poisonous to pets. Keep your dog away from fruit pits, chocolate, the artificial sweetener Xylitol, tea and coffee, garlic and onions, grapes, macadamia nuts and walnuts, moldy food, mustard seeds, potato and tomato leaves and stems (the green parts), 4 petsguide winter/spring 2015/16

Your Own Superhero Moves: Teach your own dog everything from basic manners to fancy tricks with these tips: Stand up, keep your hands out of your pockets and stash the bag of treats somewhere else. (The goal is to get your dog to comply any time, anywhere, not just when he sees food.) Teach one word at a time (“sit!”), wait two or three seconds and then say “yes!” and offer a treat. You can also reward your dog with extra lovin’, a toy, a game of fetch, a car ride or a walk—as soon as she complies. Find more training tips at humanesociety.org. Leaping Lizards! When Sherrie Dolezal returned to her Salem, Oregon home after an afternoon of errands, she found her great grandson’s bearded dragon, Del Sol, floating unconscious in the pool. A former nurse, Dolezal went right to work. “The first thing I did was turn him upside down and started shaking him,” she told KPTV FOX 12. “I just started pounding him on his back, you know, and then I started doing chest compressions.” She followed up with CPR and, just before her greatgrandson arrived, Del Sol was breathing again. The lizard spent the rest of the afternoon cuddling with a heating pad. Your Own Superhero Moves: CPR isn’t just for humans (or lizards). The American Red Cross (redcross.org), Doggie and Me (doggieandme.com), Sunny-dog Ink (sunnydogink. com) and Pet Tech (pettech.net) offer affordable, year-round pet CPR and first-aid classes. Sign up! Cat Saves Kiddo! Bakersfield preschooler Jeremy Triantafilo was riding his bike when a savage dog grabbed him by the leg—until the family cat, Tara, sprung from behind and managed to chase him off. Now an Internet celebrity, Tara was invited to “throw” out the first pitch at the Bakersfield Blaze versus Lancaster Jethawks game. Your Own Superhero Moves: Even if your dog is sweet as pudding, keep him on a leash or behind a fence. Teach your own kids

to never approach a dog-on-the-loose, to ask the owner’s permission before petting any strange dog and to hold out the back of their hand first for a sniff. Barking, growling or baring teeth are signs to stay away. Senior Citizen Corduroy the cat of Sisters, Oregon was recently named the world’s oldest feline after celebrating her 26th birthday on August 1, 2015. Adopted as a kitten by then 7-year-old Ashley Reed Okura, Corduroy has had the run of the family’s 160-acre ranch. “He always gets lots of exercise,” she said. Your Own Superhero Moves: The average life span is 15 years for a cat and 13 years for a dog. Max it out with these top three tips: Spay or neuter to cut the risk of roaming, fights and certain cancers. Maintain a healthy weight with high-quality food and daily exercise. And visit the vet at least once a year to catch problems early. Star Athletes Step aside, Usain Bolt and Serena Williams. Some of the world’s best athletes are dogs. According to Guinness World Records, Augie the golden retriever stuffed five regulation-sized tennis balls in his gob in July 2003. Rose, a Labradorborder collie mix, caught and held a record seven Frisbees in 2010. Konjo the Papillon-Jack RussellChihuahua ran the fastest five meters on his front paws—in just 2.39 seconds—in Tustin in 2014. Greyhound Cinderella May cleared a 68-inch high jump in Missouri in 2006, and Jumpy the Dog, a border collie-blue heeler mix, covered 100 meters on a skateboard in 19.65 seconds flat in LA in 2013. The standard holding period for stray animals to be reclaimed does not apply to ownersurrendered pets, who may not be held long enough to be adopted prior to euthanization. Some rescue operations accept owner-surrendered pets, allowing the pets to be adopted. See “Adoption and Rescue,“ “Pet Assistance” and “Shelters.” Lost and Found Pets If you have lost your pet: 1) Have someone stay behind to field phone calls, and then drive the neighborhood with a flashlight (after dark), whistle, your dog’s leash and a current photo, combing parks, schools and open areas. 2) Call your local animal control office (see “Animal Control” in this section) for recent pick-ups and found pet reports. 3) Search www.petharbor.com, a service of the Humane Society, for listings and pictures of animals brought into shelters, updated hourly. If you have not found your pet after searching, register your pet as lost to receive an email when matching animals are listed by a shelter or registered as found on the site. 4) Blanket a five-mile radius with “Lost Dog” signs. Include a picture, breed, color and your

phone number; listing a “reward” helps too. Leave flyers at houses on your street, shelters, pet-supply stores, vet offices, groomers, dog parks, supermarkets, the post office and coffee shops. Post “Lost Dog” ads on Craig’s List and in the local newspapers for at least two weeks. 5) Personally visit all shelters in your area; neighboring cities often contract with different shelters. Visit as often as possible. If the shelter policy allows, leave your contact information with a recent photo of your pet; shelter staff cannot always provide notification, but most will provide as much assistance as possible. If you have found an animal without tags: 1) Check for ID tags or tattoos, or drive him to your vet’s office to have him scanned for an ID microchip. 2) You can also put him on a leash and tell him to “go home!” He might lead you straight to his door, or to neighbors who know him. 3) By law you’re required to register him at the local animal shelter, because that’s likely the first place his owner will look. If you decide to search for the owner on your own, call and register the dog at local shelters and register the pet as found at www.petharbor.com; matching descriptions will be emailed to owners who have registered lost pets. 4) If you decide to take the animal to a shelter, you can find your city’s shelter on page 30. At the shelter, the animal will be scanned for microchip ID and logged. Generally, stray animals are held for an owner-reclamation period prior to being available for adoption. If you are worried about the life of the animal, always ask the shelter about their policy before taking the animal in. Tip: Many rescue organizations offer advice and assistance, you can find rescues on page 5. 5) If you cannot transport the animal to a shelter or find the owner on your own, call your local animal control office. IDENTIFICATION & LICENSING Licensing: Why and How All dogs over the age of four months are required by law to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. The licensing law was implemented as a health issue related to rabies. It also keeps an updated record of ownership. SHELTERS A Second Chance for Stray Pets If you are concerned about the life of an animal, ask about the shelter’s policy before you take the animal in. Most shelters practice euthanasia for a variety of reasons and circumstances. There are few true no-kill facilities. All shelters work with rescue groups, sanctuaries and other animal welfare organizations to find families for homeless animals. Many adoption and rescue groups offer advice and/or referrals about found/lost/stray animals (see “Adoption and Rescue” for a list of organizations).

Government, non-profit or private animal shelters, commonly called “the pound,” provide shelter and care for stray, lost or abandoned animals. All shelters offer healthy animals for adoption; there is usually a fee. Most provide pictures of adoptable and found/stray animals on their website. Animals are kept at the shelter until claimed by their owners; adopted to new owners; placed with a rescue or adoption organization; or euthanized.
