Overview: The National Museum of Environmental Sociology. (A research design for course) Located in National Mall, Washington DC, this museum focus on efficiently organizing the space and spirit relationship among three different system---main volume module, “in-between space” and the “penetrate bridges”, to assist representing the theme of the building--- how the environmental sociology changes along the history. The 3D mapping technique is used in interior scene design to show the dynamic process of changing, which give people more chance to experience better interaction.
Process: The whole project started from a book We Have Never Been Modern wrote by Latour. I was attracted by the idea of exploring and treating the relationship between nature and human society as a dialectical balance, and bodied the extracted idea to installation, multiple massing model, and eventually developed design scheme.

Installation:
When the top light is given from the top, the boundary of the two “contradictory” elements can be blurry, the recognition of the “fixed” scenes can be inversed, and the delivery of the “limited” information can be multi-layered.

Background: Wuhan is one the famous historical city, which is “forced” to open the port to the foreign countries around 1900s. In 1905, British Pinghe Back set the Packing Field in Hankou district, which gradually became the outstanding historical building. This Packing Field mainly aimed to pack cotton in the past time, but was abandoned during the great reforming of our country. . Recent years, people has better realization about the value of such kind of historical buildings, and they attracted many agency to give them new life. The Packing Field is consisted by 5 different buildings in different time, which means their style, structure, and space altered according to the unique situations. So before we stated the design job, much research about the condition of the buildings are needed, but here I think it’s better to show more results.

We measured and arranged the information of the facade to CAD file in first stage, and used it later for final laser cut model.

Tasks: •Arouse the memory of the area by multiplying the culture area like public library, education center, “penghe” museum and partly exposing original appearance of the historical building. •Find the direction of its self-renewal by arranging the function according to industrial structure of the area, optimize the relationship between this huge building and environment and adjust the recent market requirement by research. •Emphasize the importance of sustainability by using the original structure and local material with design strategies. •Dig the potential form the old high space by matching the new suitable function to it. 6

My role in the team was designing drawing and rendering the site, and building BCDE’s plans and perspective (shown left and last page). By carefully designing and connecting the project’s public space and city’s park introduces more access and energy to the filed. The well-developed plans show the complicated function, Culture areas (theater, library, culture center, museum and video room), commercial areas (bars, shops) hotels, parking and the public space (cafe, rest steps and other rest area), which organically cooperate with each other.

Combining the advantages from both traditional and modern residential buildings, this project strives to find a logic to create sample units that can be matched well to the clients’ choice, Land form and culture background well. The project can also be spread and applied to other terrain of this area, since its flexible compound mode and good cooperation with mountainous regions.

Residential building design: Custom Tailor Background: Our site located in a Chinese mountainous area, where a lot of traditional buildings are still in use. On the one hand, people ask for the modern living condition, on the other hand, they are very connected to the old building. So make the combination of advantages abstracted from both contemporary and traditional ones can be a good strategy.
Traditional element: Group trait:
People enjoy sharing daily life in the public platform
Individual trait:
“Paijia, one of the most common traditional structure, has great performance in both physics and aesthetics
Site Plan 1:1000 Buildings here prefer to be built on stilts to prevent the passive effect given by wet weather

Tanhualin is situated in the core of the historical building protection area. So the bunches of investigation result was carefully considered and the view relationship between the building’s main space and the historical buildings is connected by design. Besides the visual interaction between the extended reading room and valuable historical buildings, the efficiently arranged function, the ratio of volumes, the courtyard, and using of local material help to show spiritual cognition and culture respect.

Besides tackling the basic design requirements, I tried to figure out some urban problems like the congestion, commercial incoherence and absence of public space. Supported by local climate conditions and principle that wind will flow from the higher pressure area to the lower pressure area, a inner wind channel was designed to maximum natural ventilation. The rotated plans and atrium in each floors make the channel possible in form.

Public building design:“Keep “Breaking the Wall” community library Backpackers’ camp design: Climbing” Other works This design aims to provide a semi-self service camp for urban backpackers, who have strong wish to return to the nature. Site and structure analyzing is significant for it. The relationship between buildings and environment is carefully designed to provide better route, sightseeing and security according to the investigation. By setting the in-between corridor and unifying its slope according to the land form, the continuous feeling of climbing is created; thus, the corridors/buildings can be regarded as the joints or rest area for a climbing trip, not just the simple inner units.
