ucinda Grange certainly takes fashion shoots to new heights, literally, in her stunningly dangerous photography. She sidesteps security; faces sheer drops; runs along live train lines and flies into war zones to capture spectacular shots of iconic and interesting structures. Born and raised in the North East, she studied at Cleveland College of Art and Design. Her natural sense of adventure soon led her into urban exploring. The daredevil photographer has scaled some of the highest buildings and bridges and descended the deepest derelict tunnels around the world. The world of urban exploring is predominately male and Lucinda's
photography offers a unique take on the genre. It may be fashion forward but the lifestyle is far from glamorous, she spends more time in a sleeping bag on a concrete floor than a memory foam mattress, but the resulting images are mesmerising. “It’s making it into more of a fashion based shoot so the audience isn’t thinking ‘they’re not meant to be there,’ they are looking at it astonished by the impressive view. They look at it in a completely different way and people come to a different conclusion,” she explains. A combination of fashion and danger are evident themes in Lucinda’s work. None more so than her second journey to the Chrysler building. Having previously been photographed sat on the head of an eagle in a classic little black dress, Lucinda decided to return to the iconic building with an elegant ball gown, which made it far from easy to ascend the iconic building. “That's the picture that seems to get the most attention and because it's the Chrysler everyone thinks I’m American. But I’d like to think I’m proudly representing England," she says. Lucinda has now released the second edition autumn

of her book, Outside the Lines, which is filled with jawdropping photography and the amazing stories behind the shoots. The book allows her to share her adventures with her global fan base. “There’s plenty of reasons why people can’t do the things I do, they’re physically or mentally unable to – fear of heights, claustrophobia, fear of the consequences - but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to see the view or get that experience even if it’s just through me telling them a story or reading my writing, " she explains. “It’s like being your childhood superhero and getting to see and do things that you’re not meant to but then being able to share it so that everyone can have that same feeling of being Action Man for a bit,” she smiles. "It's really satisfying."

or someone paraded as ‘one of the most influential names in fashion’ Alexandra Shulman is remarkably down-to-earth. The Grand Dame of British Vogue doesn’t come with an army of hair and make-up artists snapping at her heels to keep her autumn
permanently coiffured and fabulous. ‘It’s not my thing’, she says. Her outfit is modest-a plain black top and an applique skirt by Erdem. Last time I met Shulman-who is touted as Vogue’s longest standing Editor, though it’s a fact she denounces during our interviewshe was warm and approachable,

mingling with the Northern fash pack at Vogue’s Big Night Out in Manchester. Today she is slightly spikey and stand-offish. Perhaps she’s on edge while she waits her turn on the stage at NE1’s Fashion Futures event or maybe she’s just a journalist who enjoys interviewing rather than be interviewed. ‘I’ve met you before,’ she exclaims, as we sit down to chat. “And I know this magazine,’ she says as she picks up the latest copy of La Di Da. I won’t lie- my belly does a little flip. O.M.G the editor of Vogue remembers who I am and recalls this very magazine. The 56-yearold has a hectic schedule and must meet dozens of people on a daily basis so the fact she remembers this detail is nothing short of impressive. As an avid reader of Vogue since I was 14, I’m made up but if I want a job at the esteemed title it’s Alexandra, editor of 23 years standing, I’d have to impress. “I have to have a gut feeling that I like somebody,” she says. ‘That’s not prescriptive and there must be
ab ove Liz with fashion designer Henry Holland and ex-Vogue writer Laura Weir who also appeared at the Fashion Futures event
enthusiasm. You probably need a certain amount of persistence, you have to persuade me that you really want to work at Vogue.’ Next year a BBC documentary will go behind the scenes at Vogue for the first as the title celebrates its centenary anniversary-a decision embraced by Alexandra, who denies the publication is elitist. ‘I think in the 60s that was true at Vogue but not anymore. It’s much more about talent rather than family connections or who you know. “It’s not about whether you’re posh or not.’ Born to journalist parents (dad was a theatre critic and mum worked in magazines), the Vogue editor’s journey into journalism began aged 23. By 27 she was editing the women’s page of a national newspaper. Surprisingly, she had no real interest in fashion. She arrived at Vogue via stints at the Telegraph, Tatler and GQ magazine. During her reign, she has championed putting nonmodels on the cover and infusing the magazine with stories of people other than fashionistassuch as Ed Milliband’s brother David. Even Wor Cheryl has graced the coveted front cover spot. In February 2009, the magazine had its best cover sales for that month, after the-then Cheryl Cole gave an exclusive. “She did very well,’ says Alexandra. “She had malaria at the time and she did it without anyone realising. We do put real people on our covers and at the time everyone was fascinated by her.” In Spring, two of Northumbria University’s fashion design graduates will see their work featured in the online spring edition of Vogue “It’s great,” says Shulman. Northumbria does have a very good reputation.’’ It’s not the Editor’s first time in Newcastle-the last time was when she was stranded after her plane autumn
was diverted on the way back from New York Fashion Week. She spent six hours in a Newcastle hotel room before heading back to London. Also stranded was Kendall Jenner, supermodel Jourdan Dunn and her contemporary at US Vogue Anna Wintour, who allegedly couldn’t get out of the city quick enough ‘I do wish I had more time to visit,” smiles Alexandra, though you get the impression Destination North East is not high on her travel must-do list. When I ask what she thinks about the highly-acclaimed YSL fashion exhibition being staged in the North, Alexandra replies, ‘Is it?’, but she seems genuinely pleased that such an event has been staged outside the capital. “I’m thrilled,’ she says. And with that our interview ends and she ventures onto stage to address a packed audience of fashionistas eager to discover more about one the world’s biggest magazines.

H i l l s
Geordie How did you end up going from Newcastle to Beverly Hills? “I first started acting with the Live Theatre on the Quayside in Newcastle when I was 10 and I got my first TV role on Byker Grove when I was 13 and I was so excited! A few years later I moved to London before I was scouted from across the pond by modelling agencies in New York and Los Angeles and I moved to Beverly Hills.”
Do you love your L.A life? “I absolutely love LA.You can be who you want, wear what you want, do what you want and be applauded for that. The city inspires you to be the best version of yourself, the lifestyle is fabulous. I feel very lucky I get to experience it. I work for two of the top model agencies out here, Photogenics and Pure Management and they made me feel at home.”
What’s your average day like? “I do things daily that once upon a time I never ever dreamed I would get to do. I wake up every morning to a gorgeous sunrise across Beverly Hills, hike up Runyon canyon; I then get ready to go to castings, usually three or more a day.

Interview
What’s your favourite glam night out?
The job could be anything from a “LOOK BOOK” to a large budget commercial. I spend my evenings in the hills or in Malibu but in my spare time I try and meet with new and exciting photographers to keep building my portfolio and create a larger book of work.
Oh every girl loves a glam night out every once in a while! I have been to movie premieres and the nice part is getting ready with my girlfriends and having your make-up and hair done. A red carpet event is always fun and the gowns and people are just jawdroppingly beautiful.
What work have you loved doing? “I loved doing a commercial for a make-up brand and I have done some great covers and shoots for some of my favourite magazines! I’m just so grateful to be in profession where every day is something different and fun in such a beautiful part of the world.”
Do you ever just pinch yourself? Hahaha There are times I’m at an audition in a famous casting house on the Hollywood walk of fame and I think WOW think of the successful people that have been through these doors! I get excited every day going somewhere new and fabulous, I really do love it here, but I will never forget where I’m from.
What do you miss from home? “I miss my mum the most, we are very close. It’s hard being away from family and friends but I hope the longer I’m here they will come out to visit as much as possible. I want my house to be a home away from home for them. This might sound ridiculous but…. I miss the milk! Milk in the US is not the same.”
Where are your favourite places to hang out? “I like my local restaurant Pump which is owned by Lisa Vanderpump and the W hotel is also a must to visit! I go with most of my friends to nice places to eat either in Malibu or I like Spago in Beverley Hills. My mum was over recently and I took her for afternoon tea at The Peninsula, which was lovely!

hey’re good looking, they’re rich, they have great taste and they also happen to be some of the loveliest people you could ever hope to meet. Meet the Evans family, expert in diamonds and jewels and all things fabulous. Three brothers, Jonathan, Richard and Nigel and a sister, Natalie, they are on the eve of opening two new stores in their growing Whittakers jewellery business but you wouldn’t know it as they pad around Natalie’s house at the shoot, debating what to wear and seeming entirely stress free. The boys are showing us photos of their gorgeous homes and playfully competing over the size of their ‘Man Caves’, which are the size of ballrooms and kitted out with all the latest state of the art Gym equipment and ‘Boy Toys’. There is clear affection here between all four, despite the stress of running a business together. They set up Whittakers together with their first store based in Yarm. Despite a shaky start, they have gone from strength to strength. “We didn’t have enough jewellery at first so we had to spread it around the store,” says Jonathan laughing. “Then on the first day we popped some plants outside and ended up locking ourselves out of the shop!” One of their diamond representatives has turned up for the shoot with lots of very expensive and beautiful diamond jewellery. This is a specialty of the family who are experts in diamonds. They were taught at an early age by their father who is a keen jewellery lover. “My Dad loves jewellery,” says Nigel, “It’s a real passion of his. Every holiday we would have to go and visit all the local jewellers. In the end all of these jewellers knew us by name in France and Italy! And when we were younger, Dad used to colour in diamonds and gemstones and quiz us on them.” Clearly his passion paid off as their expertise is now second to none. Their love of quality is such that they ended up owning and selling a diamond which was lent to an Oscar winner to wear at the Oscars. “The key to having sparkly and clean looking diamonds isn’t just down to the diamond itself,” explains Natalie, who is wearing a rather spectacular wedding ring. “The setting and the cut of the stone are so important in the final look and that’s what a lot of people don’t understand.” And, talking of sparkling diamond rings, a big seller at the moment are Divorce rings. These are bought by ‘first wives’ who use the divorce settlement to replace their original wedding or engagement ring. “It’s quite a big thing now,” says Richard. “The ex wives come in and buy something fabulous and say to us ‘this is the ring I should have had’,” he says. “We love that, it shows they have style.” Much like the Evans family themselves.

’ve always loved clothes, from a very young age my best friend and I used to do pretend fashion shows and dress up our pets. I am a confirmed shopaholic. At university I remember getting my first student loan which was supposed to be for food and books, but as soon as I saw the money in my bank I was on a bus to the Trafford Centre spending it on new clothes. I take real inspiration from other people who I meet daily. I get clothes envy quite a lot. If I see something like I need to know where it’s from and have it in my wardrobe so I’m usually straight on messenger after seeing friends’ outfits on Facebook. People often assume my clothes are expensive brands but I love a bargain. I prefer to buy a high street dress or small boutique brand, then dress it up with a fabulous pair of expensive heels and a designer bag like Gucci or Mulberry. My favourite shops are Zara, French Connection, Topshop, Ted Baker and I love the independent brands in Selfridges and having a good mooch about. I also love Self Portrait, Lavish Alice, Dahlia, Girls on Film, Mink Pink. Self Portrait have the most amazing lace and quirky cut dresses at reasonable prices for a special event. I love trying clothes on, I’m a proper wardrobe raider when I go to friend’s houses. My best friend lives in London and we often post each other clothes for events. She owns this amazing backless top that she got in New York and I haven’t seen anything like it, that autumn
poor top has travelled more than I have. It’s currently in my wardrobe though! “I have a passion for shoes and I love L K Bennett shoes at the moment. I don’t need any excuse to get a dress and heels on. I like to feel comfortable, confident and sassy. If I dress down for summer I like Zara ripped jeans, Havainas flip flops and a slouchy Jack Wills
cotton T shirt, accessorised with my Vivienne Westwood sunglasses of course. “I like to stand out and I have a large collection of red head related T shirts which can make an appearance depending on how mischievous I’m feeling that day. Style should reflect your mood and it’s always good to be different. I love to accessorise my outfits with statement costume jewellery but I always wear my Chanel J12 watch which was a real investment piece and I love its timelessness. I treated myself to it in the days before I had my son and had more disposable income.
Madeleine is a keen fashionista and loves high street or independent fashion brands glammed up with designer handbags and fashion forward shoes

illie, the English Bulldog, who joined the Frenchies on the shoot, is also making headlines. She is the inspiration behind Owner Nikki Irvine’s new Mrs Mills product line for dogs which started with Mrs Mills ‘Snout So Soft’ Balm. Nikki came up with the balm when she realised that Milly was suffering from a dry snout, a common condition for dogs such a bulldogs and she couldn’t find anything to treat it. The balm has taken off by word of mouth amongst the Bulldog community and a pot or two has even ended up in Beverly Hills. Now Nikki is planning more products including a soap on a rope. “People have started calling me the nose fairy because it transforms their noses,” she says. She got Millie from The Edward Foundation which rescues bulldogs that are being mistreated. Millie was being used as a breeding dog to produce litter after litter of puppies. The Edward Foundation works hard to rescue as many dogs as it can and Nikki is a keen supporter. “They do amazing work but the problem is so rife, so many dogs are being mistreated, they can only do so much, it’s absolutely heartbreaking,” she says. “I always try to raise awareness of their work where I can.” WWW.MRS-MILLS.CO.UK WWW.THEEDWARDFOUNDATION.CO.UK

he latest buzz word on the fitness scene is Hot Yoga but when taught properly, you soon realise this is no passing craze but a fantastic addition to your lifestyle which delivers as many benefits for the mind as it does for the body. celebrities, public figures and athletes for very good reason. It strengthens the body, greatly increases flexibility and can create a deep feeling of relaxation and inner peace. Other links have also been made to the positive effects of increased blood flow and potential for detoxification. Although an experienced and qualified yoga teacher, such is the specialist nature of Hot Yoga that Agnes had to train 12 hours a day for nearly a month in a special training centre in Thailand. “A lot of places offer Hot Yoga but it needs to be taught properly,” she says. “The results are amazing and many of our clients have shed stones in a couple of months. But it is not a 'quick fix' trend, it's a wonderful class for people of all ages and sizes and abilities to enjoy.”

am privileged to have lived and worked in three countries – Canada, the UK and I have a lovely house in Provence, France. Each country has its own approach to breast augmentation. I believe in the natural look, and advise all my clients that natural is preferable. This may be round implants, tear drop, over or under the muscle, it depends on what suits the individual. There is not ‘one size fits all’ and it is interesting that I often get told “my friend Julie had 430cc round implants under the muscle and looks great. I want the same”. What Julie’s friend doesn’t realize is that Julie is a 5 feet 9 inch, 19 year old, size 6 model, whereas her friend is 5 feet 2, has had three children and is a size 14! In Canada and Europe, the emphasis is on natural and not obvious, and particularly in North America, smooth implants, saline filled, are still quite common. In France, the look is definitely ‘French chic’. Small and perfectly formed is the look. Here? Well I still get asked for “very obvious and round and stuck on” like so-and-so from a reality show! If I cannot persuade the client to change her mind, then I suggest she goes to seek the services of another surgeon. My reputation has been hard earned, and I always say that there are two people in any surgical intervention – I don’t want you to look stupid, but I don’t want me to look stupid either. The secret is when you walk into a restaurant or bar, people look and say “Absolutely gorgeous, but I wonder has she had her boobs done?” Not “oh my goodness, look at the boobs on that. Who would do that? Baguley? I’m definitely not going to see him” So the UK is entirely different to Europe in oh so many ways. I wonder if David Cameron’s referendum will account for that ?

But you don't have to head off to Rio to get the latest 'state of the art' procedure if a good diet and exercise regime just aren't delivering for you. In truth, an expert and bespoke approach to tummy tucks and one that can also fine tune related problem areas, has been happening in our region for some time now. The 'Washington' Tummy Tuck may sound less glamorous but it has all the benefits and more of the 'Brazilian'. The Spire Hospital in Washington was the first hospital in the North of England to use the state of the art body jet rather than lasers to remove troublesome fat from problem areas. The advantage of this is the body jet uses a fine jet of water to breakdown the fat rather than burning it away with lasers, which is less intrusive. “We have always tended to combine liposuction with our tummy tuck procedures if it's needed,” explains expert surgeon Mr Matt Erdmann. “I sculpt the flanks to ensure a nice, flat stomach from the side and tighten any abdominal muscles that need to be addressed as a matter of course.” The treatments are not designed to replace a healthy diet and exercise but rather help deal with problem areas that are not responding to lifestyle changes such as loose skin due to weight loss and pregnancy and stubborn areas of pockets of fat that are resistant to exercise. A range of different procedures are available including different liposuction techniques, mini tummy tucks and more intensive procedures. “Each case would be judged individually and assessed to see what would give patients the best result and deliver the most sculpted abdomen,” says Mr Erdmann. “It often varies with the sexes. Women generally have problem areas at the top of their thighs, midriff and sides whilst men tend to carry more weight on their stomachs. The right procedure can then be recommended which will deliver the best result possible.”

his season it's all about 'the glow' in beauty circles. A host of new strobe creams have been launched to allow you to fake that healthy sheen, look younger, healthier and well, more beautiful. But make up can only do so much. Any top make up artist, however skilled, will testify that the condition of the skin is crucial to achieving a beautiful, flawless face. And whilst in the US, people have their dermatologist on speed dial; the UK has been a lot slower to seek proper, expert medical advice on solving skincare issues and achieving healthy, glowing skin. But that is starting to change and not just in London. One of the States most successful medical skincare ranges, ZO, is being launched in the region. The launch comes from Queensway Skin Clinic, a sister company to Queensway Dental Clinic, a respected dentistry practice based in Teesside. Queensway has been offering facial aesthetics for some time now under the expertise of the highly qualified Rebecca Hierons with impressive results so the addition of the ZO skincare range comes as a natural progression. The range has been developed by world renowned Los Angeles dermatologist, Dr. Zein Obagi, and is only sold through qualified physicians who go through extensive training before they can advise clients on the products. “It was ZO's rigorous approach to training that impressed us the most,” explains Uzma Olbrich, a partner in the practice. “As professionals we need to be absolutely certain that the claims that are being made for products are backed by sound scientific facts and evidence. “The more we researched the programme, the more convinced we became that we needed to offer the ZO skin care range to our clients. But we needed to be absolutely sure; we have our reputation to protect, so we carried out
Beauty
our own tests. All of the skincare team used the products for several months and we monitored the results.” And the results are impressive. When I meet the team they are wearing very little make up and the first thing you notice about them is how healthy and fresh they look. Their skin is glowing and all of them are still using ZO products to maintain the results they have achieved. Friendly and empathetic, they are passionate about the results it can deliver and the changes it can make to clients’ lives. “I noticed a real difference within a few weeks,” says Communications Manager Coral
Milner. “People keep commenting that I look younger. I do feel more confident in myself and I am leaving the house now without wearing a lot of make up, I just feel more comfortable in my own skin.” “Anyone can use the ZO products,” explains Rebecca Hierons, “you don't have to have a specific skincare problem. My whole family, including my children, now use the range. But the products are incredibly effective at treating a host of difficult issues such as acne, sun damage, ageing skin, rosacea and open pores. It makes such a difference to people’s confidence levels which is really rewarding to see. ”

t’s all about the ‘glow’ this season, according to top make up artist Jo Leversuch. Jo is heading down to LFW to work and her make up kit will definitely include some of the latest ‘glow’ products. Strobing is the new highlighting. “Basically this season the focus is more on strobing and less of the dramatic aspect of contouring such as the Kim Kardashian look,” she says. “There is still contouring but it’s just more subtle for AW 15 so the concept is still similar but the focus is strobing more on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead and the cupid bow.” The end result should be akin to a ‘Candle light’ skin reflection, giving a dewy finish and all over glow. “You can mix products with your foundation, for example, to create this softer look. Plus you can also add a highlighter on top of the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead and cupid bow area to create a strong strobing look,” Jo explains. Her favourite products include Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow, MAC Strobing Cream and NARS Copacabana Illuminator. Other key trends for AW 15 include rich, burnished colours such as burgundy and berry, golds and reds to go with the leather, furs and gold in the clothing ranges.
Glow
“The vintage vamp bee stung look is key for this season if you are going for feature lips. Intense red lips were showcased by Dolce & Gabbana on the Milan catwalk and are a must for AW15. Keep the eyes simple and natural with a strong eye,” she advises. For eyes, Jo suggests that a pop of colour can be added to strong graphic eyes, such as cobalt or kingfisher blue, giving a nod to the 70s hippy look debuted at London fashion week.

ou’ll still need that essential black dress this season - but in a more fluid, relaxed style with extra design interest. Tailoring moves from subdued to sensational with dusty pink and coral jackets complete with matching trousers in elegant tapered leg styles to create a flattering but very feminine look. And of course with party season round the corner you’ll need that totally ‘wow’ piece - so go for it big time with the tight leather leggings - ultra sexy and ‘dancing fit’. rriving at Somerset House armed with the elusive press pass, Alexander McQueen scarf and surplus of equipment, I was ready to hit the runway. Forget about that glam FROW seat, it’s more handbags at dawn amongst the fashion press and not the Anya Hindmarch type either. Perched precariously on my camera case like a sniper, I was ready to shoot. It may be stressful but for a girl that lives and breathes fashion it’s the best job in the world. Not only do you get to see some amazing shows, you get a bird’s eye view of all the latest trends and top tips to steal to make sure you look truly fashion fabulous this season. Highlights for me included Emilio de la Morena which featured looks in opulent, velvet jewel tones and thigh-high splits for that sophisticated society party. With brand ambassadors including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss, this is a label to look out for.

or a unique take on the AW15 dress, check out David Koma, king of the cut-out design. His gorgeous black, blue and nude designs featured patent leather accents and buckle detailing for added wow factor. Holly Fulton’s designs rocked the runway with Gwen Stefani’s ‘Rich Girl’ blaring out for the models final walk, complementing her ‘girly glam’ collection to perfection. This AW/15 season it’s all about the coat. I loved Paul Costelloe’s collection and particularly his cocoon coat. Held in the opulent Waldorf Hilton, his ‘Jewels in the Mist’ Italian inspired collection was just captivating, featuring luxe jacquards and tweed fabrics. Perfect to ensure you’re dressed to impress whatever the weather.

ith trends changing faster in the era of Instagram, who better than fashion photographers to deliver fabulous new looks fast? Durham based Nicola Wright and Dan Prince set up The Trend when they realised there was a gap in the market for an alternative to the celebrity style online boutiques. They collaborate with fellow fashion photographer Jade Turnbull. “We bring a better understanding of what our customers want,” explains Nicola. “Some boutiques are trying to find the closest match to a celebrity style on a budget and that can lead to some poor quality clothing which won’t look right unless it’s altered to fit; just like the celebrity will have had done. “I’m on so many photoshoots where I see all the tricks used to make clothes look perfect on our models and sometimes I know it’s
going to be unrealistic for the customer. We made a commitment straight away to shoot our clothing how it should look when people are actually wearing it. I think we don’t see that enough in the industry.
“I’m on so many photoshoots where I see all the tricks used to make clothes look perfect on our models…
Quality will be an important part of their offer. “I wanted to be able to hand pick all of our garments, I want to see it, feel it, check it over. It’s high quality at affordable prices, and I want to make sure I know what my customers will be getting before they get it,” Nicola says. And forget about clothes that just come in ‘model size perfect’, The Trend showcases clothes that will look good on all sorts of different body shapes and sizes. It’s something both Nicola and Jade are particularly passionate about. “I’ve always struggled with this! Why shouldn’t I look good just because I’ve got a little bit more here and there? I want that for my customers, too,” exclaims Nicola.

A LO K LO O M BA have been a client of Savannah’s for a few years now. There is no where else that I would trust with my hair so when I was asked to review a facial treatment I was excited at the prospect of experiencing the Spa. The Salon and Spa has recently relocated to 1 Old Eldon Square to a converted beautiful Victorian Building in the heart of the city and has been renamed The House of Savannah. The spa is on the top two floors of the building. The surroundings are serene and masculine with clean crisp lines and with soothing grey tones and soft lighting - the environment really draws you in. The treatment was a Men’s Oxygenating Pure and Matt facial. This facial treats combination and oily skin, effectively purifying and restoring clean skin. It gives the skin instant clarity on dull and devitalised skin. The antibacterial and mattifying mask blitzes spots and shine. It includes Aquatic Plant Powders and an oxygenating power mask for a brighter, shine free complexion that is simply flawless. The facial uses Decleor products and begins with a Diagnostic Back Massage, helping to identify any areas of tension or imbalance in the
body. In my case the therapist was able to identify that my digestive system was out of balance (due to dehydration, lifestyle!!). This was particularly useful in pinpointing the areas of concern and really made the treatment feel much more personal and targeted. A calming hot water bottle is used during the facial to relax and warm the client. The skin was thoroughly deep cleansed and treated with a Gel ALPHA + which gave a deep exfoliation, with the power of AHA’s. This leaves the skin smoother, radiant and soft. This facial includes Decleor’s unique tri phase massage, incorporating Aromapressure for deep relaxation and elimination of toxins; Aromadrainage to detoxify and Aromamassage for the ultimate in relaxation. The Matt and Pure mask is then applied which absorbs impurities, tightens skin texture, balances oil production and leaves the skin bright clean. The skin was protected with Aroma Purete lotion to end the facial. All in all my experience at House of Savannah was thoroughly relaxing, calming and a true delight. I will certainly be using the Spa facilities again. The House of Savannah is a wonderfully chic and calming oasis.

hink men’s hair is all about short back and sides? Think again, says Men’s Hairdresser of the Year nominee Marcus King. The hairdresser, who runs Hooker & Young in Wynyard, has seen a huge surge in the number of men who want fashion-forward styles rather than traditional looks. “We get a lot of gents coming into the salon and it’s not all short, back and sides, explains Marcus. “I think people like David Beckham have really put men’s hairdressing and hair styles on the map and it’s really taken off. “For young lads now it’s very acceptable to sport different looks. If Beckham gets a certain style
then people tend to emulate that.” Marcus has been nominated for Men’s Hairdresser of the Year in the prestigious 2015 British Hairdresser of the Year Awards which take place in London later this year. He says: “It’s the first time I have been nominated for this particular award and I don’t think anyone from the North East of England has been shortlisted before. “Everyone who I am up against is London-based so it’s really great for the region and for us as a salon as well. “I’ve always been interested in men’s hair. It’s a different avenue, it’s very artistic-a lot of people don’t think it is but it is and you can come up with lots of different ideas.” autumn
Marcus submitted eight different men’s hair styles to the judging panel. “I was inspired by the Benetton adverts using lots of different people and different nationalities” he explains. “ I used Afro hair, Chinese, Japanese and the images came out really well. I’m really pleased with them.” And what are key trends to look out for in 2015/16?

ver since the Coach House opened its doors friends and associates have raved about how amazing it is. ‘The food is great’, ‘the cocktails are divine’ and ‘the ambience is perfect’, they’d say. From lunch dates to private dinner parties to romantic meals for two and even cocktails and cake with the girls, it seemed that everyone in my social circle had been apart from me. I was starting to feel left out and that just wouldn’t do! Cue a stern word with the hubby and mutterings of ‘it’s my birthday, I need a treat’, resulted in a dinner booking and an overnight stay in one of the Coach House’s bedrooms. The Coach House, for those of you who don’t know, is part of the 200 acre Georgian estate which is also home to Middleton Lodge, a popular wedding destination. autumn
After launching a successful series of supper evenings, the owners of the Lodge decided to renovate derelict barns on the estate and transform them into a restaurant with rooms. Add into the mix, a spa and self-catering Georgian farmhouse and it is becoming one of North Yorkshire’s must-visit destinations. There are 9 rooms to choose from. We checked into the Methera which is a bedroom housed in a stone-built barn set back from the central courtyard on the estate which is made up of farm and woodland. Walking to our room I felt like I could have been in Provence. The stone buildings mixed with a warm summer’s night and the scent of lavender from outside our bedroom door was reminiscent of the Southern French region. The room itself was contemporary with mod cons including flat screen television, Roberts radio and nespresso machine. There was even a copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover by the bed-ooh la la! After a glass of fizz or two we headed to the restaurant back in the main courtyard. The Coach House offers estate to plate dining with head chef Gareth Rayner passionate about local produce. We ordered a drink at the bar and tucked ourselves away in a snug while we perused the menu. The bar has a great selection of cocktails. I enjoyed a Bramble-a delicious concoction of gin, fresh lemon, orange bitters, seasonal syrup and crème de cassis (£7). At our table a waiter brought over sourdough and raisin and cinnamon bread while we waited for our starters. The stylish restaurant was buzzing with couples and groups of friends,

I don’t think I have enjoyed a dish as much as this in a long time. many of whom we knew, enjoying a Friday night out. For starters I enjoyed cured salmon, salmon roe, oyster mayo and cucumber and tempura salty fingers (£10) while my husband dined on pressed ham, pork, pig’s cheek and black pudding terrine and pineapple. Both dishes were impeccably presented and tasted divine-a perfect marriage of flavours. Our mains were just as outstanding and the quality of the meat was evident in the dishes. My meal of rump of lamb, burnt onions, chorizo , chick peas, baba ganoush and yoghurt(£24) was a sensational fusion of flavours -I don’t think I have enjoyed a dish as much as this in a long time. Hubby has a penchant for steak so he tucked into an 8oz rib eye with skinny fries, salad and béarnaise sauce (£22) with sides of Vichy carrots (£3) and minted greens (£3). We enjoyed a bottle of Australian Sauvignon Blanc wine recommended to us by our extremely helpful and charming
waiter Callum, who told us he had given up his job as a teacher to take over as head barman because he loved the place so much. They take their wine seriously-it is supplied by Liberty of London and Corney & Barrow-but the owners try to offer the best price possible to diners. Sadly we had to bypass desserts as we simply didn’t have enough room for more food but offerings included pistachio cake, peach panna cotta and strawberry cheesecake. Stomachs full, we retired to our room and had one of the best sleep’s ever in what seemed like the world’s comfiest bed. Next morning, the restaurant was preparing for a wedding so we enjoyed a hearty breakfast of Coach House full English and Eggs benedict with Yorkshire ham in one of the private dining rooms. Coffee was served in the courtyard under the glare of the morning sun. It was a perfect end to a brilliant stay at the Coach House. Now we know why everyone is raving about it!
TAS T I N G NOTES
f all the seasonal menus, it’s the Autumn one I enjoy creating the most. From plump berries to fabulous woody ceps and Jerusalem artichokes, it’s the season of plenty in our corner of the world. It’s also really obvious from what’s on the plate that the weather is getting colder and the nights are drawing in; everything becomes a little bit heavier and a lot less health conscious! Autumn is the start of the game season which is something we feature heavily on our Specials. We are really lucky to have a fantastic local supplier and we often get a wonderful selection of game which you don’t tend to see on other menus. At this time of year good quality fish becomes more expensive and more difficult to source as local fishermen find it harder to get out to work. At the Tontine we compensate for this by using more farmed fish such as stonebass where we can be sure of getting a reliable, good quality product even as the local catch gets less predictable. With Great British Bake Off in full swing, we are under pressure to make our Afternoon Tea even more fabulous than ever, you never know when Paul and Mary might stop by! This Autumn we are making good use of the gorgeous apples, pears and berries we grow onsite to produce something really special for all the bake off fans out there. We always try to please our regulars by keeping some of the old favourites on any new menu but with Paul and Mary in mind we’ve definitely got a few Autumn showstoppers of our own! If I had to put money on it I’d say that the Herb Fed Chicken and Globe Artichoke Terrine with Cep Puree and Dried Prosciutto Salad will be a best-selling starter and the Black Forest Soufflé served with Chocolate Custard and Mascarpone Ice Cream will be our most popular dessert. It’s just as well I’m not a betting man as our classic Tontine prawn cocktail, which has been on the menu as long as anyone can remember, will probably beat them all! The Autumn menu will be available in September.

ME TH OD Most of the work can be done well in advance of serving the dish. 2 DAYS BEFORE Marinate the confit duck leg. Mix salt, garlic, thyme, five spice and caster sugar in a bowl and rub into the duck legs. Add the sliced oranges and leave to marinate for 24 hours. 1 DAY BEFORE When the legs have been marinated, cook them in duck fat at 100 degrees for 10 hours. While the duck is cooking prepare the roasted beetroot and celeriac puree. To roast the beetroot, first wash it and then place it in a foil parcel with all the other ingredients. Cook in the oven at 140
degrees for 2 hours and then chill. Place the celeriac in cold water with the butter and a pinch of salt. Bring to the boil and simmer until all the water has evaporated. Blend until smooth, add the cream and pass through a sieve. Season to taste and chill until cold. When the duck legs are cooked, chill until cold and then flake the meat off the bones. Add the mashed potato, parsley, shallots and chorizo and combine. Whisk the eggs in a bowl and place the flour and breadcrumbs in separate bowls. Roll the duck mix into 10 balls, roll them in the flour, then the egg and finally the breadcrumbs. Put to one side until ready to serve. autumn

Warm the celeriac puree Deep fry the confit duck balls in oil at 175 degrees until golden brown. Cut the duck breasts into squares of around 4cm and place 3 x squares vertically on each plate with 2 duck and chorizo balls in between. Place slices of orange and beetroot around the meat, and finish with dots celeriac puree, a drizzle of jus and pea shoots.

A huge crescent shaped window dominates the luxury open-plan bedroom offering stunning views across the Tyne. We can see the Baltic, the Sage, the bridges and miles beyond. If ever there was a place that could be categorised as a ‘Room with a View’ then this is it. Hence my endless utterings of ‘wow’ as I surveyed the dominant Newcastle skyline. The selection of anchovy twists, cheese straws and pancetta wrapped grissini, served with tomato fondue, pesto and Dijon dips (£6.95) was an appetising start to our meal. The menu features 12 starters and a selection of mains including meat and fish dishes, salads and grills alongside a variety of sides, seven different desserts and a cheese trolley. For starters I ordered the Hotel Du Vin cured smoked salmon with horseradish crème fraiche (£8.50) while my husband enjoyed chicken liver parfait with sourdough toast and raisin chutney (£7.95). hotel’s steaks are dry aged from the bone for a minimum of 28 days and served with pommes frites and sauce. The meat was served on a wooden board alongside a handful of rocket, tomatoes and garlic butter, peppercorn and jus roti sauces served in copper pots. The dish was delicious-a fantastic tender cut of meat with plenty of pink, just how we like it. Alongside it we ordered sides of salade verte, sautéed spinach and Vichy carrots (all sides £3.50 each). We really didn’t need so many side dishes and shamelessly couldn’t eat it all. This also meant we had to refuse desserts but offerings include peach melba sundae, crème brulee and cinnamon beignets. The bistro has a fantastic wine selection which you can view in the wine vault at the end of the dining room. We enjoyed a refreshing bottle of Chateau Bauduc sauvignon blanc (£29.50) as recommended by our waiter. Both the service and quality of the food was very impressive. After our meal we enjoyed a G&T in the bar before retiring to our room as I wanted to enjoy the decadent surroundings as much as possible.
Hotel Du Vin enjoys an enviable location in the heart of Newcastle so the next morning after breakfast we took a stroll along the Quayside to the Baltic where we visited an exhibition and enjoyed a coffee overlooking the Tyne. A fabulous end to a fantastic evening.

rothers Ollie and Harry Vaulkhard have launched Newcastle Gin which they will be selling exclusively at their newly-opened bar, eaterie and gin distillery Bealim House. Housed in a former print works in Gallowgate the interior has been inspired by the history of the building, which dates back to 1896, with many of the original features still in place. From an eye-catching 8ft copper gin still to original brick work and signage, the bar offers a stylish place to hang out. “It’s the first time my brother and I have worked together and it’s amazing to see our ideas to come together,” says Ollie. “ We lost dad (drinks tycoon Nigel Vaulkhard) last year and many of the elements of what we’ve done have been inspired by him. He’d have loved the place.” Along with Bealim House’s own brand of on-site distilled ‘hibiscus’ gin,
the drinks menu will also comprise fine wines with tasting glasses, an extensive cocktail menu and a beer table complete with self-pouring pumps where private parties or groups can pre-order a keg of beer of their choice. Meanwhile on the other side of the city centre, the aptly-named GIN Bar is offering up a staggering 23,000 variations of martini from a range of 30 different gins and an extensive list of vermouths. Located on the ground floor of the newly-opened Crown Plaza hotel, in the Stephenson Quarter behind Central Station, gin lovers will be able to create their own bespoke martini. “We will be helping our guests to discover and invent their perfect Martini,” explains bar manager and mixologist Gary French. The GIN Bar will also offer signature G&Ts, traditional non-gin cocktails and a selection of small plates and sharing platters from the hotel’s brasserie Hawthorns. In the future they hope to launch their own brand of gin.

erhaps your tastes run to steely platinum or friendly strawberry hued lovelies. You may even have the occasional urge for a really sexy blonde. We’re not judging. Wine comes in all colours, styles and prices and, sometimes, straying from the path of fidelity to Pinot Grigio or Aussie Merlot can be a mouth-watering experience, especially if we’re talking food matching. Staying with your favourite tipple is a safe bet but you may sometimes find it doesn’t always taste the same. I could go on for hours about vintages etc. but chances are you’re drinking it with different food, and that’s where the exciting bit comes in. Food pairing. The alchemy of life. When you get it wrong, it’s not the end of the world, you just move on. When, however, you get it right……. Boy, oh boy, everything simply makes sense. The food tastes better, the wine is superb, it’s all about oral intensity!
Here are some tips for a perfect marriage: CHILLI-CON-CARNE Rich and smooth, an Argentinian Malbec, or if you’re going to go that extra step and add grated dark chocolate, then a powerful Italian such as Barolo (or anything made from Nebbiolo grapes) will be just the job.
ROAST CHICKEN Red or white
RABBIT A lively medium-bodied young
Burgundies, but if you’re having sweet or spicy stuffings or trimmings, try a sparkling Shiraz.
Italian red, Chinon or New Zealand Pinot Noir.
BEEF STEW A sturdy red: something from
SALMON, SEARED OR GRILLED Fine white Burgundy: Puligny or ChassagneMontrachet, Mersault, or Gruner Veltliner.
Bordeaux or Ribero del Duero in Spain. Beef Strogonoff; Dramatic reds: Barolo, Amarone or even Lebanese.
SALMON, SMOKED A dry but pungent MARINATED TARTARE OF WILD white: fino sherry, Pouilly Fume or vintage SALMON Avoid a powerful wine, instead try Champagne. Also vodka or akavit. a young white Burgundy or better still, pink Champagne.

delicate flavour, so try not to overpower the dish with too rich a wine; a fresh Sancerre or if you prefer something a little drier, perhaps a Macon-Lugny.
CASSOULET Red from southwest Francebut best of all is Beaujolais Cru or a young Tempranillo.
HAGGIS Fruity red, eg young claret, Chateauneuf du Pape or new world Cabernet Sauvignon. Or of course malt whisky.
HARE Calls for flavourful red: Ribero del Duero, Rioja Reserva, or even a Priorat. LAMB One of the traditional best partners for a very good Bordeaux, but possibly even better would be a Reserva Rioja. New Zealand Pinot Noir for spicy lamb dishes.
MUSSELS Of course Mussels and Muscadet were truly meant for each other, but try a Chablis Premier Cru or a lightly oaked Chardonnay.

STEAK AU POIVRE A fairly young Rhone red or Cabernet Sauvignon.
STEAK AND KIDNEY PIE OR PUDDING Red Rioja Reserva, Douro red or mature Cabernet or a muscular Lebanese.
TAGINES These vary enormously, but fruity young reds are a good bet: some of the younger Lebanese reds, also Tempranillo especially with a touch of spicy Shiraz.
THAI FOOD Ginger and lemongrass call for pungent Sauvignon Blanc (Loire, S.Africa, Australia and New Zealand),or Riesling (German Spatlese or Australian). Coconut milk; Ripe, oaked Chardonnays; Alsace Pinot Blanc for refreshment; Gewurtztramminer or Verdelho, and of course sparkling. VENISON Big scale reds including Mouvedre, Bordeaux with a few years bottle age or a Dao Reserve.

e heard great things about the new Head Chef at Darlington’s stylish Houndgate Townhouse Hotel, David Garlinge, so we couldn’t resist stopping by for a delicious light lunch of Salmon with Radish and Summer Vegetables. The meal didn’t disappoint. Light, elegant, flavoursome, this was seriously good cooking. David, originally from the North-East, has a stellar background and has worked for Gordon Ramsey and Jason Atherton at Maze and Pollen Street Social in London as well as cooking for some A List celebrities. He has also worked at The Raby Hunt and The Orangery at Rockliffe Hall and was a SemiFinalist in MasterChef: The Professionals 2013. “The exterior of Houndgate Townhouse grabbed me. That blast of refinement stood out in a place I didn’t expect it to be in. I want my food to reflect that, simple and elegant, refined and recognisable,” he explains. The Autumn Winter menu looks fabulous and includes starters such as Crab, Kohirabi, Black Garlic and Bread Foam and delicious mains such as Venison, Beetroot, Glazed Figs and Mashed Potatoes. f you love all things town and country then you’ll adore the fabulous new makeover at one of Northumberland’s chicest establishments. Once a pretty average pub, The Plough in Alnwick has been transformed into a swish boutique hotel that boasts tartan chairs in plush purple, comfy leather Chesterfields, antlers adorning walls and decadent wallpaper depicting scenes from yesteryear. Thanks to a £150,000 investment owner David Whitehead, who also runs The Jolly Fisherman in Craster, has turned the venue into a destination address by offering beautiful furnishings and stylish bedrooms alongside exceptionally good food. The location helps too. Situated on Bondgate Without, it is a stone’s throw from the town centre and only a short stroll to Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Gardens. The fabulous and famed Barter Books is two seconds up the road. The seven bedrooms have been given a makeover too.I checked into a large room featuring wood-panel effect wallpaper and a sleek modern bathroom. The bed was huge. Furnished with crisp white bed linen and floral cushions, the centre piece was a large leather headboard and matching deer lamps placed either side.

I loved the little touches in the room such as the heart-shaped piece of slate with the words ‘stay, eat, relax, enjoy’ written on it in chalk and the gorgeous brownies topped with marshmallow on top. There was also complimentary crisps and a bar of chocolate made in the North East. Downstairs in The Plough is a large bar area while upstairs is the restaurant, another stylish room with wooden floors and midnight blue feature walls.

So there is plenty of style but is there substance? Well, yes there is. The food is amazing and there is an inventive menu to boot. For starters I enjoyed hot roasted smoked haddock risotto with shavings of parmesan cheese, poached hen egg and curry infused oil. Other options included smoked whisky infused roe deer, pickled beetroot, poached pear and quail egg salad. For my main dish I opted for seared slow roasted border shoulder of lamb, sautéed lamb sweat breads, pea puree and minted hollandaise. It was as delicious as it sounds. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection. Portion sizes are very generous so I wasn’t sure I could manage a dessert but I persevered, all in the name of research of course. I tucked into the Famous Plough’s homemade chocolate brownie, raspberry coulis and local Doddington’s ice cream.Yum, yum! The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and service was brilliant too-a credit to General Manager Michael Bateman. The Plough deserves heaps of recognition for not only offering stylish surroundings but good quality dishes that aren’t run-ofthe-mill. If you haven’t been yet, book a table now you won’t regret it.

emember Sex and the City? Back in the 90s I was a full blown SATC addict mesmerised by a lifestyle of glamorous gowns, towering heels, gossip, scandal and the odd broken relationship or two. My favourite part of any episode was when the girls got together for Sunday brunch. Naughty goings on from the night before were discussed over bloody Mary’s, eggs and doughnuts (and occasionally the odd salad), all while the fabulous four looked coiffured and fashion forward. So imagine my delight when I heard brunch was having a foodie revival. At Café Royal in Newcastle you can now enjoy High Breakfast on a Sunday until 3pm-perfect for sleeping off the night before and then rolling straight back into town. A friend was visiting from London so I suggested we met with a mutual friend for brunch. What better way to catch up with the
girls then enjoying a late-morning Sunday feast a la Carrie and co ? We ordered a high breakfast for two and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon served on granary toast. The girls and I were so engrossed in each other’s gossip that the food arrived in what seemed like no time. The high breakfast looked amazing and was served on a three tier neon yellow perspex stand, much like those used for afternoon tea. It featured a selection of breakfast favourites served in miniature. One tier housed mini portions of bacon sandwiches, French toast with grilled mushroom and roast tomato and scrambled egg with smoked salmon and chive while the next layer had mini pain au chocolat and croissants. The final tier, otherwise known as the healthy and guilt-free option, offered spring green smoothies alongside granola and seasonal berry compote. W
e were on a mission! We had yet to sample the delights that Richard Allen is now offering at The Orangery at Rockliffe Hall, the fact that their Spa Garden had just opened was an added bonus. Rockliffe Hall has one of the best Spas I have ever experienced. The Spa Garden had only opened the week before – even in the rain, the outdoor infinity edge hydrotherapy pool proved too alluring for us to decline a dip. But it was the hydrotherapy pool that had our attention for the majority of the day, only interrupted by a light lunch in the Brasserie. It was wholesome and delicious, just what was needed before we headed back to be pummelled by various water jets and relax in the thermal suites and 20m pool. And so to dinner. Dinner in The Orangery was all we had anticipated and more. The Seven Course Surprise Menu with the accompanying wine flight was nothing less than exquisite. If you want simple, filling fare, this is not the menu for you (The Clubhouse and The Brasserie will satisfy the ‘simple and filling fare’ appetites). But if you want an exquisite, unique taste experience, then I urge you to treat yourself to dinner in The Orangery.
Rockliffe Hall has recently allowed canine guests to join their owners with six rooms being allocated as ‘dog friendly’. These include survival skills which may involve camp fire building, building shelters and camouflage face painting, mega ball games, archery, reptile and owl encounters, golf lessons and moorland adventures. There’s even a trip to Buggy Castle! The hotel features 64 individually-designed bedrooms, located in the original manor house and private mews. There are no bad
views: choose between the valley, the first tee or the courtyard. Self-caterers have a choice of 22 lodges in the grounds. The Spa at Bovey Castle is perfect for those wishing to indulge in some ultimate relaxation: a large swimming pool opens onto a stunning sun terrace with facilities including Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, specialist ESPA treatments and a new dedicated area for gentlemen. Dining at Bovey Castle has been revived recently to offer exclusive, upscale and classy dining in the Great Western Restaurant to the cosy seating, roaring log fires and
welcoming atmosphere of Smith’s Brasserie. We were staying to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and were offered Bovey’s most discreet private dining experience ~ ‘The Summerhouse’. A bijou location with crisp linen, an elegant al fresco dining experience with only the subtle intervention of The Summerhouse waiting staff and chefs. The location and the dinner served up a true ‘memory box’ moment. 01647 445 000 reception@boveycastle.com www.boveycastle.com

CARRY ON CARAVANNING in style, of course! LIZ LA MB AND FA M I LY E NJOY A LU XU RY S TAY IN A STATE-OF -T HE -A RT C A R AVA N
P
osh and caravanning? These are two words that don’t normally go together! So imagine my surprise when I was offered a luxury break in the caravan. “It’s not your average caravan stay-it’s all high-tech and high-end’ I was told by the PR but I had my doubts. It just didn’t seem possible that luxury could ever join forces with a house on wheels. I have nothing against caravans. I spent many summers of my youth in my family’s caravan on the beautiful Northumberland coastline but luxe it was not. But thanks to the popularity of staycations, a new breed of luxury holiday parks are springing up in the UK offering families mod cons and comfort alongside scenic views and play parks for the children. Thorpe Farm Park, at Greta Bridge near Barnard Castle, is one such place. The visitor attraction is in the first stages of offering short breaks and holiday homes in luxury log cabins and caravans with more development of the site taking place over the next few years. Many of the caravans sell in the region of £100,000 so they are top-end and offer families a home from home experience. My husband and I, along with three-year-old Henry, stayed in one such caravan. Situated
with a beautiful vista overlooking a lake and with outside decking perfect for al fresco dining, it was the height of luxury mobile living. The interior of the caravan was top end with central heating, high-spec kitchen, contemporary furnishings, power shower and flat screen TV. It was a world away from the caravan trips of my youth. Henry loved walking around the lake and feeding the ducks who circulated outside our door at the first whiff of a loaf of bread. There was also a play area on site, a nature reserve and a café offering homemade dishes. There is also a reclamation barn close-by, which I was dying to visit, but unfortunately it was closed during our stay. The highlight of Henry’s stay was a visit to Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre which is

also on Thorpe Farm. It’s home to an assortment of animals including monkeys, meerkats, llamas, pygmy goats and pigs, many of which are housed in paddocks. We enjoyed a walk around the fields with owner Terry who told of ambitious plans for the future to house animals such as giraffes. Henry was in his element and didn’t squirm when terry offered him the chance to stroke a snake and hold a tarantula. The rescue centre is a brilliant addition to the site and we can’t wait to go back. Bowes Museum is also close by so I enjoyed a trip to see the Yves St Laurent exhibition during our stay. If you think caravanning is not for you, think again. Just as posh camping has gained in popularity, posh caravanning is bang on trend. And if you really can’t face a mobile home, then book into one of the farm’s log cabins instead.

allowing the more experienced skier the chance to take advantage of the backcountry tours for incredible off-piste and powder skiing. Hakuba is a popular spot for young snowboarders and skiers which adds to the excellent après-ski atmosphere and there are lots of restaurants to choose from to suit every taste.
I
f you fancy somewhere a little different for skiing this year take a look at Japan. Powder hounds love it because of the quality of the Japanese snow and the country has some fabulous resorts for expert skiiers and novices alike. Here are a few of my favourites.
Niseko One of the largest and most popular group of ski resorts on the island of Hokkaido, often called Mount Fuji of Hokkaido or Mount Fuji of the North. The snow here is guaranteed, receiving one of the highest snowfalls in Japan with annual averages of over 15 metres. It is composed of six ski areas which can be skied on one ski pass. Niseko suits every ability including hard-core advanced skiers looking for powder and off-piste skiing. With a very busy après-ski scene, it offers a great choice of accommodation and restaurant options.
Shiga Kogen Shiga Kogen is one of the largest ski resorts in the world and the highest ski resort in Japan, becoming popular after hosting several events in the 1998 Winter Olympics. Made up of 21 interconnected ski resorts which are all accessible off one lift pass (with
many offering ski in ski out accommodation), there are over 100 hotels to choose from. It’s home to seven natural hot springs (onsens) and an absolute ‘must see’ are the Snow Monkeys, who bathe in the warm waters of the hot springs during the day before returning to the safety of the forest on an evening. Magical!
Hakuba An easy Shinkansen (bullet train) ride from Tokyo, on the Honshu Island in the Japanese Alps is the Hakuba ski resort, host to the alpine skiing, downhill, super giant slalom and combined slalom events in the 1998 Winter Olympics. A popular destination for international skiers, it offers luxury hotels, traditional ryokans as well as self-contained accommodation, something not frequently found in Japanese ski resorts. This resort caters excellently for families as well as beginners and intermediates yet also provides more testing domains for the more experienced skiers. There are plenty of English speaking staff on hand for kids group ski lessons or child care,
Nozawa Onsen Nozawa Onsen is a charming, traditional Japanese village near Nagano known for its hot springs. As well as the public ones, a number of private ones can be found in some of the hotels as well as the larger traditional ‘ryokans’. With its small population, pretty cobblestone streets, traditional inns and many restaurants both on and off piste, Nozawa Onsen offers a different Japanese experience to the better known ski resorts. Suitable for every level from beginners through to advanced skiers and with 50km of slopes, it has something for everyone. Apres-ski is a more low key affair in comparison to the other resorts, but nonetheless there are still plenty of small bars to choose from. Try and catch the Fire Festival. Nozawa Onsen hosts one of the three main fire festivals held every year in Japan on 15th January to pray for ‘plentiful harvest, health and good fortune’ in the coming year.

eading up to Slaley Hall a mere 24 hours before setting off for a family holiday in France via Calais, stress levels were running high. I took my mum as a treat and valet parking set the tone for a splendidly luxurious and indulgent afternoon. We were led into the elegant Dukes Restaurant for Afternoon Tea. It came beautifully presented with Salmon, Egg and Ham sandwiches, the ham sandwiches were the best we’d ever tasted, plain scones and a variety of gourmet pastries including Vanilla Panacotta, Mini Carrot Cake, macaroons and a lemon meringue with raspberries on the top which was exquisite. There was a huge range of leaf teas to accompany the meal. There was far too much but we gorged ourselves and felt thoroughly spoilt. The service was excellent and attentive. We were then taken to the Spa for our treatments. We sat in a beautiful spa lounge whilst the therapists talked us through our treatments before being led to separate treatment rooms. I had a massage which was superb and released all of the many knots in my shoulders and an exfoliating facial which was really relaxing. The spa rooms were beautiful and tranquil and the spa team friendly and clearly expert. Mum had a facial and manicure and loved both. The whole experience was heavenly. It was an oasis of calm after a thoroughly stressful week and the perfect way to start off our holiday. To book call 01434 673 350 or visit www.Qhotels.co.uk/SlaleyHall

ith summer behind us we’re straight into our busiest time. The Biscuit Factory is a gallery, restaurant, cafe and events service with over 90,000 visitors coming through our doors a year, so no two days tend to be the same. As GM, I oversee all departments alongside Gallery Management so a ‘normal’ day for me can mean anything from curatorial meetings to strategic planning, looking over menus to developing new projects and lots in between! I really thrive on this variety and although the sheer scale of balancing everything can be challenging, I absolutely love what I do. This is my favourite (and busiest) time of the year as we get ready for the festive season. Winter is marked by the opening of our exhibition in November with an exclusive launch event complete with festive flourishes to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. It’s such a social time for everyone and it’s the same for our business as we head out to Christmas Fairs and food events showcasing our art and our chef ’s talent. We also welcome huge numbers of visitors, who come here to participate in events like Ouseburn Open Studios, as well as attend their own private parties hosted in our restaurant, artisan and events suite The Biscuit Room. It takes a team of professional and creative people to make this happen who have passion and drive to look for new ways to surprise and delight our visitors. In the gallery, one way we’re doing this is by introducing new collaborators into our exhibition programme and seeking new artists to show. We’re working with Sunderland’s prestigious National Glass Centre, Craft Scotland and the drawing? project to highlight these art forms in an interesting and accessible way. Everything we show in the gallery is for sale so it’s important that what we represent appeals to the wide audience we attract - from first time buyers to collectors, those with a flair for interior design or who want to buy something quirky and original as a gift. We have a team of three curators who choose the work we display, seeking from far and wide.
Georgina McMaster. The Prince £5,000 Emily Stubbs Spectrum Pots from £45 Steven Lindsay Tophat £1,250 This month for example, we’re off to Brighton Art Fair to hopefully uncover some new work and gain a little inspiration from the amazing array of independent shops and boutiques in the famous Lanes shopping area. Mixing business with pleasure - I’ll no doubt indulge in a spot of retail therapy and a culinary treat (or two) to bring back ideas to share with our Chefs. Art, food and culture can often go hand in hand and this ethos can really be seen in the accolades our restaurant artisan has been

receiving. I’m incredibly proud that with award-winning Head Chef Andrew Wilkinson in the kitchen we’ve just been entered into the 2016 Good Food Guide, one of only a handful of restaurants to do so in Tyne and Wear which is great news for us and for the region, as the food scene continues to grow. Building on this (literally and metaphorically!) we’re currently refurbishing our cafe The Factory Kitchen, which will re-launch later this year with a new contemporary look and updated European influenced menu. The cafe has stunning panoramic views over the city and a huge sun terrace and with a respected Head Chef, the café is going to be the place in the city for laid back dining. With more building work due in the new year as we develop our events facilities further with the introduction of a roof top terrace bar and kitchen, we’re all looking ahead to our own celebrations; to look back on what we’ve achieved so far and what’s yet to come.

My Fabulous Car... OU R READ ER S LOVE T HE I R L A DI DA C A RS. IN T H E F IRS T OF A S ER IES WE ASKED TOP COS M ET I C S U RG E O N PA UL B AG UL EY A B OU T H IS LAT ES T N EW BABY... What do you use it for? Do you still have your other cars? “I really don’t need another car with this 4 wheel drive beast. I use it every day for pleasure and getting to and from work. I smile every time I get into it. I've even parted with my Aston.” What do the rest of the family think about it? Do you let anyone else drive it? “The kids love it. They love the noise, especially when the rev counter blips over 3000 rpm. That’s when the noise kicks in. My partner Karen drives it, but no one else.”
Image: Liam Baguley Tell us about your fabulous new car? “It's the range rover sport SVR. Its the first car from the Special Vehicle Operations unit of Jaguar Land rover. 5.5 Litre 550 Horsepower V8 supercar!” Why did you fall in love with it? “I feel a little superficial when I say that the first view of it was via Youtube! There is a great video of a Stig like character driving the SVR around a race track in the rain. The noise and the speed of the car is ridiculous on the video. After that I just had to have one! All the reviews I read placed it at the top of the pile in the new generation of four wheel drive SUV’s, and so it was a no-brainer. But the looks and the feel of the car really sell it. I must thank Gary Halliday and the team at Stratstone Land rover in Stockton. Thanks guys!” What's your favourite features? “I can’t pin down any favourite feature - as a package it's awesome. When I drive it I feel 6 feet 4, with a full head of hair and like I can
sing like Michael Buble! The comfort combined with the blistering and eye watering acceleration are astounding. And the road holding is second to none, it grips the road like it’s on rails. And then there's the noise! It has been described as sounding like a squadron of spitfires descending from the sky. Small children and animals run for cover whenever I start it up. “But the best (and this is real 'boys and their toys' territory) is the button on the centre console that when it’s engaged makes the exhaust even louder! The technie guys call it an active exhaust. All I know is that it's the best sound I’ve ever heard. There is a sport and a dynamic setting that really show off the car’s potential. I’ve driven it a couple of times in dynamic and almost scared myself to death. It just takes off and keeps going (up to the national speed limit of course!). It has the centre of gravity of a small apartment building, yet acts and feels like a sports car. 0 - 60 in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 165mph, a staggering performance.” autumn

2015
Have you done any long journeys in it so far? What's the verdict in terms of performance? “The performance is staggering. The acceleration and road holding really take your breath away. The comfort level in the cabin is typical Range Rover/ Land Rover, and the controls easy and simple. I wouldn’t want anything complicated to get in the way of the drive. The sound system is awesome, and bluetooth connection to my iPhone is perfect, but I must admit I rarely listen to music while driving. The engine is all I need to hear! “I have taken it on a few long drives to Manchester and across to the lakes. I get out (smiling) but really not aching at all because of the glorious seats that wrap around you as you drive.” If La Di Da sneaked a look in your glove compartment what would we find? A wig, a black skinny tie and a CD of Michael Buble so that I really can look like him as I sing along! Favourite driving music? “Depends on my mood. Michael is always good driving easy listening, but other times it has to be good old fashioned rock. My favourite song of all time? All Right Now by Free, Paul Kossoff on guitar.”

f you’ve ever watched Top Gear and envied the gang of three’s adventures then we have just the thing for you. However, you will need nerves of steel to drive the Yorkshire Landrover Experience. At some stage you may even find the need to give yourself a firm ‘talking to’ before you press down on the accelerator and drive off a cliff face into seeming thin air. Ditto when you’re driving through a lake with water up at the windows, across huge jagged boulders that could give you a puncture at any moment and performing right turns off the

It’s exhilarating and so much fun. You’ll want to do it again and again.. edge of hills with no apparent ground in sight. But it’s exhilarating and so much fun. You’ll want to do it again and again. And your respect for the British engineering that underpins these astonishing intuitive vehicles just keeps growing as every seemingly mad, impossible challenge is gracefully met with just a click of a button. The Landrover Experience is set in very stylish buildings in the grounds of the very la di da Broughton Hall, near Skipton. Outside the showroom, set against the stunning Yorkshire Dales backdrop, are the all new Range Rover,
Defender, Discovery, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque and Freelander, lined up, ready for action and all in pristine white. The concept behind the experience is to enable Landrover drivers and other 4x4 owners to learn more about their car’s potential and capability, making them safer and more confident on and off road. Landrover has concentrated its off road driving expertise into safe, thrilling and true to life adventures and the Yorkshire experience is one of the best, due to the natural landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. Many Londoners come up to do it and they’ve even had a Top Gear presenter try his hand, although they remain suitably discreet about his identity.
It’s really only when you visit a Landrover Experience Centre that you realise just what a Land Rover can do off road. You’ll learn a huge amount about the cars, have an unforgettable adventure experience and lots and lots of fun.

perfectly complement this lovely hotel’s quirky history. It’s obvious that this is no ‘design by numbers’ boutique hotel. It just oozes flair and originality and luxury, without being stuffy. It’s really rather special and you will want to return again and again, no doubt trying a different bedroom each time. And it’s not just the bedrooms which impress. The dining areas are classily romantic with lots of individual touches, creating an atmosphere that will make you want to linger over the restaurant’s frankly delicious food whether an Afternoon Tea with the girls or some fine dining with someone special.

it has become a place frequented by the fine and fashionable with good reason...
Nestled in the beautiful and dramatic hills of Teesside, it’s just off the A19 on the junction of the main Yarm to Thirsk roads, you could be a world away from the hustle and bustle of Teesside. The hotel has a rather unusual history which adds to its appeal. In 1804 the Thirsk to Yarm turnpike was built and the growing traffic called for an inn to cater for the coaches. In 1804 a meeting was held by local landowners and subscriptions were raised to purchase land and build an Inn in the manner of a ‘tontine’ (a ‘tontine’ was a scheme that had a number of people who each put in the same amount of
money on the understanding that the last surviving member inherited the whole lot) and in July 1804 the foundation stone for the Cleveland Tontine was laid. In 2013 Charles Tompkins and his wife Angela bought the hotel. It was closed for extensive refurbishment and re-opened in August 2013. Since then it has become a place frequented by the fine and fashionable with good reason and has established itself as the ‘go to’ destination in North Yorkshire, a secret oasis of fabulousness for those in the know. However, there is nothing elitist about the Tontine. The staff are a joy and the prices are autumn

CLEVER DESIGN CAN MAXIMISE BIJOUX SPACE S
Small and beautiful...
S
pace is very important when designing an interior as no one wants to feel claustrophobic. Maximising space can be a challenge but with vision it can be created successfully and tastefully. The best way to maximise space is to do exactly that. Look at your homes layout as a whole and try to identify areas which could opened up or transformed to serve another purpose. For example knock down an internal wall to create open plan kitchen/dining area, utilising some bedroom space to increase the size of a bathroom or turn a small bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe which can be accessed via the master bedroom. When people think about maximising space they usually look at each room individually. Look at the whole layout firstly; this is your space, therefore try to maximise it. If you’re not in a position to do such works, there are still ways to maximise space, my personal favourite being the mirrored wall. This surprisingly is something which still shocks clients to this day, but I have been doing it for years. It’s a tasteful way to double the size of your room without spending large
amounts of money. It’s like a magic trick. You can also be creative with mirrored walls by simply bevelling the edges therefore making a feature of the joins and giving a classical feel, or by sinking pictures and wall lights into it, giving your room a real wow factor. When considering decorating
before

your room, avoid dark colours and keep it light with fresh tones. Don’t use heavy pelmets or curtains at your windows. Try and keep things neat by using roman blinds, or even plantation shutters. Using reflective wallpapers is always beneficial to small spaces. Like the mirrored wall they reflect light around the room, but at night take on a completely different role, creating a fabulous atmosphere when lit with low level lighting/lamps. Ensure furniture is not over powering, it can be very easy to misunderstand the space of your room when in an open, spacious furniture show room. Always measure! You would be surprised how many people actually get this wrong. Try not to clutter table tops, fire places and the like as this all adds to giving a sense of space. As for bathrooms, use large tiles. This keeps grout lines and cuts to a minimum giving your space a cleaner look. Use tiles with reflection, again the same principles as a mirrored wall, it reflects light. Always go for basins with storage underneath. There are so many basins with storage some very stylish looking units. It is also a great way to save on space so you're not cluttering the walls with cupboards.

ou need to meet Adam Prest, he’s really rather fabulous’. For the last few years countless people have urged us to write something on the man often described as the North’s most hip florist. Tracking him down wasn’t easy though, he spends a lot of time in London, but we finally caught up with him in Northallerton where he was giving a floral demonstration to a packed room at Normanby Golf Club. His designs are very much avant-garde. During the demo he creates stunning centrepieces using vintage bottles and curiosities from antique shops married with woodland flowers
that he picked that morning. Throughout he keeps up a very funny commentary which combines tips, gossip and lots of self deprecating tales. He has the audience eating out of his hand. It’s easy to see why London’s fashion crowd love him so much. He is a maverick and a very charismatic one at that. “I’ve always been a free spirit,” he says, “I was never naughty as such at school but I would just do what I wanted. And I’m the same with flowers. I create what I think looks good, I like to be free to express myself.” Adam was brought up in Sedgefield, and his family farm pigs. He is the most unlikely pig farmer’s son you can imagine.

“My Mum and Dad are very young at heart and individual and I take after them in terms of personality,” he says. “My mum came down the stairs the other day in some trousers and said to me ‘does my bum look like Nikki Minaj’s in these’.You just wouldn’t expect a woman of her age to be so up on things but they both are.” His flowers are real statement pieces. Even his gift arrangements come with an antique vase rather than the usual wrapping and raffia. It’s easy to see why he’s on the speedial of the great and good in the region and his flowers a fixture at every society wedding or function. So, meet Adam Prest before London snaps him up. He’s warm, talented and yes, really rather fabulous.

Hot off the Milan furniture design catwalk, two new striking looks will be available alongside the usual ercol range instore this season. Navone is a long-time fan of ercol. “I have always admired ercol as a historical reference; I have some pieces in my Paris apartment. When I visited the factory, I realised it is a mythical kind of place. And that made me start to think what we can do together.” ercol’s Marino occasional chair, designed by ercol designer Dylan Freeth, cleverly references the brand's classic designs whilst delivering a contemporary look crafted from solid ash timber. Its flowing lines, featuring turned elements, combined with exceptional craftsmanship, create a striking, armchair which honours the brand's use of traditional skills and techniques that date back nearly 100 years.
