or a make up artist the creativity of SS17 is a joy and red lips were everywhere on the catwalks. You need a great base for this look and really smooth, flawless skin. I always use Steamcream to moisturise as it provides a really good base and it also smells lovely. It comes in fabulously designer tins so always a favourite with models. For foundation my go to is Veil Cover Cream which covers a multitude of sins but provides a really natural base which lasts all day. This is a real hero product as it can cover heavy scarring and even tattoos but has a really light texture and it doesn’t look heavy on the skin. Its waterproof so great to take on holiday with you if you want coverage on the beach. I am always asked about this cream on shoots and you can check out tutorials and find more information on www.veilcovercream.com. I used Veil Cover Cream in Oyster and, for the eyes, MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots in Groundwork and Quite Natural. I added a touch of Lancôme Grandiose Mascara to the eyes and Rodial Glamobrow in Dark Ash Brown to neaten the brows. For glow and to shade and illuminate I used Tom Ford Intensity One. And those perfect rosebud lips were shown off with Pixi’s Sweet Cherry.

or uniquely stylish jewellery with bags of personality, take a look at some of the fabulous creations from Renné Jewellery. La Di Da has been aware of these fabulous fashionistas for some time after a few friends raved about their jewellery which is both fashion forward but also classic. Big chunky rings, personalised bangles and cufflinks and beautiful statement necklaces are just a few elements of their collection which reflects their classic design taste and country aesthetic. “We take our inspiration from all sorts of things,” explains daughter Annie. “It could be the countryside or the antique markets of France. Our jewellery is very personal and has a timeless quality; we want to make something that people will treasure.”

gems n FASHIONISTAS AND MOTHER AND DAUGHTER HELEN AND ANNIE RENNISON HAVE BECOME A CULT BRAND IN COUNTRY CIRCLES FOR THEIR EXQUISITE JEWELLERY. LA DI DA WENT TO VISIT THEIR BEAUTIFUL STUDIO TO FIND OUT MORE….

Their studio is based in the heart of the beautiful countryside near Richmond, North Yorks. Housed in the fabulous Sedbury Hall Stables, they may be near the A1 but the journey, which takes you through woodlands, is as enchanting as their jewellery. They sell online and at country fairs and you can also visit the studio by appointment which ensures the duo is onsite. Renné was set up in 2014. Helen had taken a silver smithing course in the past and her daughter Annie had just completed a course in design, jewellery and silversmithing at Hatton Garden in London. Each piece of jewellery is a joint effort, handcrafted in their workshop. They work mainly with sterling silver and semiprecious stones and, although they have a keen eye for fashion, they don’t do seasonal collections as such. We make it to the studio after a drive down narrow tracks arcing through beautiful woodland stopping for the occasional rabbit that crosses our path, and then the Georgian stables come into view. It is here where Renné HQ is based; a stylish studio with plenty of inspiration and a distractingly gorgeous Jack Russell called Teddie. spring

The display cabinets host their collections from bangles with dainty stirrup charms to beautiful rings with semi precious stones, guaranteed to garner compliments from all and sundry. You can also commission Renné to personalise pieces of their jewellery. Both Helen and Annie are warm and down to earth and their passion for what they do shines through. “A lot of jewellery is disposable now,” says Helen. “We wanted to create something that people want to keep and love and wear. Each piece has a special meaning to it, a story that inspired it. Our jewellery takes time to make as it’s all made by hand and each piece is individual. Annie adds: “Our collection isn’t about fine, intricate and perfect designs. Renné is about the imperfections that make a piece stand out and is unique to the owner.” • www.rennejewellery.co.uk.Visit the studio by appointment by calling 01325 728288. “I just felt the need to drop you a line to say how happy I am with the results of my recent surgery I cried tears of joy when I saw the difference in my appearance and could not ask for more. I also want to add that everyone I have encountered during the whole process has been wonderful, so friendly, helpful and informative every step of the way. Chemical EQUATION THE MARION GLUCK BIO-IDENTICALS HAS ARRIVED IN THE REGION WITH ITS NATURAL BUT LIFE CHANGING APPROACH TO HORMONAL CHANGES AND THE MENOPAUSE. WE CHAT TO THE MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING IT TO THE REGION, RENOWNED SURGEON PAUL BAGULEY...

W

eight gain, mood swings, lack of drive, poor sex life, depression and lack of energy are just a few of the symptoms that could mean your hormones are out of sync. Now a leading medical professional, respected surgeon Mr Paul Baguley, has bought a plant based hormone treatment to the region which claims to be able to restore your body’s system back to its optimum balance, health and energy. Mr Baguley, a qualified doctor, has trained with The Marion Gluck Clinic in London which has been pioneering Bio-Identical hormone therapies for many years. It was established by Marion Gluck who has over 25 years in the field. The therapies offer treatments for a whole range of health issues from the menopause, premenstrual tension, post-natal depression, acne, depression, endometriosis, thyroid dysfunction and andropause, the ‘male menopause’. As one of the country’s leading cosmetic surgeons, Paul Baguley spends a lot of time assessing his client’s physical and emotional wellbeing before embarking upon procedures. And one thing kept coming up in these consultations which started to trouble him. “I saw so many women whose GP had put them on a combination of antidepressants and HRT,” he explained. “And I would ask ‘why are you on antidepressants?’ And the symptoms they told me about, hair falling out, poor sex life, gaining weight, mood swings, these were all effects of hormonal imbalance, not depression. “As a private cosmetic surgeon I am lucky enough to have the luxury of time to do a really lengthy consultation with my clients. We talk about all of their symptoms in depth as part of our consultation process. Most GP’s just aren’t allowed that time. In fact, in spring

some cases, GP’s are only allowed to discuss one medical issue at the appointment yet finding out about seemingly random symptoms can be essential for diagnosing what the actual problem really is.” As Mr Baguley saw increasing numbers coming through his door, he started to do some research to find a solution that would better serve his clients. “I am a doctor first and a surgeon second so this trend really started to trouble me. Women shouldn’t have to put up with these symptoms when the correct hormone treatment could make them feel like their old selves again,” he explained. “HRT is not right for everyone. It’s not an area where a ‘one size fits all’ approach is always appropriate. Each person’s situation is unique to them. If, for example, a blood test shows that progesterone levels are low, then that is all that is needed to be replaced, but you don’t know what is needed until you do a blood test. Also women need testosterone, so the testing highlights the ratios between oestrogen and progesterone as well as the level of testosterone so that a bespoke combination therapy can be prescribed to balance their hormone system,” Mr Baguley explains. “HRT doesn’t deliver such an approach. HRT can also put a patient at higher risk of developing breast

HRT is not right for everyone. It’s not an area where a ‘one size fits all’ approach is appropriate. Each person’s situation is unique to them… and ovarian cancer, blood clots and heart disease so it’s a blunt tool for dealing with something that is so unique and individual.” Mr Baguley’s research led him to the Marion Gluck Clinic in London where he trained in Bio-identical hormone therapies. The Marion Gluck approach is based upon the fact that every patient has a unique endocrine system. It starts with a comprehensive consultation and tests in order to evaluate the full picture. If a hormonal imbalance is diagnosed, a personalised treatment plan of bio-identical hormones is devised specifically for the individual patient.

Bio-identical hormones are identical in chemical structure to those found in the human body. They are based on a substance called diosgenin which was originally derived from Mexican yams. As these hormones are identical in molecular structure to those found in the body they usually have minimal side effects, says The Marion Gluck Clinic. The treatments are compounded high quality, bespoke, bio-identical hormones therapy medicines that are usually administered as creams, lozenges, pessaries or capsules. These can be supplemented with vitamins and supplements. As each person’s biological make up is unique, the treatments are bespoke preparations personally tailored to suit the individual’s precise needs. The cost of a consultation with Mr. Baguley is £250 and clients will need a blood test which costs £125. Their unique prescription will cost £80 for a few weeks supply, less than a pound a day, and a follow up consultation is £60. The results, says Mr. Baguley, can often be life changing. “I really admire the work of Marion Gluck and the fact that she is dedicated to spreading the word all over the UK,” says Mr. Baguley. “I am the first, as far as I am aware, in the region to offer Bio-Identical hormone therapies but I hope others will quickly follow. The difference it can make to people’s lives and wellbeing is profound.” • Mr Paul Baguley 01642 794 150. www.definecosmeticsurgery.com. www. mariongluckclinic.com

The Manopause - it’s really a thing! Hormones are just as important for men as they are for women. Andropause, the male equivalent of menopause, has begun to attract more attention from the media and medical community in recent years. Men entering middle age may report a loss of ‘joie de vivre’ and many can start to question their lives, their relationships and their work. Andropause occurs as hormone levels, particularly testosterone, decline with age. This happens naturally in men from age 30 onwards. Some men become symptomatic when their testosterone levels fall below a critical level, which is different for each man. Symptoms can include tiredness, fatigue, or ‘burnout syndrome’, decreased strength and lean body mass, irritability, poor sleep pattern, diminished libido, memory loss, erectile dysfunction and depression. “It can have a real impact on men’s

spring

20

2017

lives and yet it isn’t taken as seriously as the menopause,” says Mr Baguley. “It is often dismissed as a ‘midlife crisis’ yet it can be a source of absolute misery for men. Many don’t know where to turn to for treatment because it isn’t written about as much in the media. Some men will drink alcohol more or take recreational drugs to try to treat the symptoms and the way they feel but this makes it worse as it can make the hormone levels even lower. ” As well as the right bio-identical therapy prescription, patients are also advised about the correct vitamins and diet to follow. “I generally suggest Vitamin D supplements, high potency multi vitamin B, evening primrose and magnesium and a good balanced diet without too many refined carbohydrates will all help in keeping the client fit and active and in the prime of life,” he advises.

rianna Huffington may have drawn attention to the sleep deprivation crisis, but it’s Kiss the Moon founder Jo Foster who has come up with the solution. She launched sleep and wellness brand Kiss the Moon in 2014. It now contains over 30 products and includes night-time skincare, bath and body care and bedside must-haves. Everything is driven by one goal – to help people have a beautiful night’s sleep. Unashamedly glamorous, the multi award winning Kiss the Moon sleep and beauty products are now available in the hippest places around the globe from luxury fashion store Baar + Bass in the Kings Road to the Savue Beauty Secret Store in Berlin. The idea behind the range began as a result of Jo searching for a solution to a stressful life and constant jetlag. “My job was to help some of the biggest companies in the world to develop their brands and come up with new product ideas. I was living in London and zipping around the world like a mad thing. It was non-stop and great fun but also came with wall-to-wall deadlines and constant jetlag,” she tells us. “I realised how lack of sleep was affecting my mood, my concentration levels and my skin. I noticed I always slept really well when I came back home to Yorkshire, surrounded by nature, so I started researching what could help me and

that naturally led onto setting up Kiss the Moon so that I could help other people too.” The brand has quickly picked up an international base of raving fans, including the team at La Di Da. Their range is based around four different signature blends of essential oils – LOVE, GLOW, DREAM and CALM – each one offering a different solution for your sleep and skin needs. ho says business meetings have to be conducted in a meeting room? Some time out of the office in a relaxed environment can surely be a good thing…right? To be fair I don’t really need an excuse to spa but if I can multi task and mix work and play then why not...so my suggestion of ‘meeting’ and ‘spa-ing’ was a very appealing idea for my friend Carly. As far as spas go in the North East, I’m pretty clued up and have given a fair bit of business to them over the years. Rockliffe is still a firm favourite but my current number one spa experience in the North East is Ramside Hall Spa near Durham. It’s brand spanking new so of course it’s going to be appealing, but generally I think they have got it about right…and that’s coming from a tough critic. It’s easy to see why they were awarded a ‘Good Spa Guide’ rating of 5 bubbles stating “light and airy design, lovely pools, carefully designed treatment rooms and restful sleep sanctuary. A sociable spa that offers excellent treatments and good-value spa days and stays”. I couldn’t agree more. The staff are attentive, friendly and welcoming, you can drink prosecco by the pool, the towels and robes are fresh, lots of refreshments and fresh fruit, the facilities are excellent, the choice of treatments and packages are plentiful…perfect for a lounging day and the pools are warm! Cold pools – are a no no! Although we didn’t have any treatments this time, I have been pampered here in the past and can confirm that it was delightful. The highlight of our day was enjoying the private use of the infinity pool, a gorgeously warm and bubbly indulgence

overlooking the gardens. What could possibly be better than a good girlie gossip in a giant hot tub drinking cocktails…only a couple though as we had to remember we were there to discuss business. Lunch was delicious, we tucked into beautifully crisp tempura king prawns, chicken satay which was moist and fragrant and then main course was a ‘bento’ box (Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice, fish or meat, with pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container). Ours were full of Asian delights including Bang Bang chicken salad and chilli and salt edamame beans. We loved our relaxing day (and we even managed to get some work done!). Top marks all round… We had a half day spa including lunch which was around £50. We arrived at 9.30am, had full use of the spa facilities and enjoyed lunch at 1.30pm. This fitted in perfectly with school drop off and pick up.

TRIED& TESTED Seaham Hall

T

REVIEW: ANGELA METCALFE

here was sleet, there was rain, but the moment we stepped into the tranquillity of Seaham Hall Spa, we left all of that in the car park. Cosseted in all of the white fluffy things which are integral to a great spa day, we hit the pools, after a comprehensive tour of the facilities, becoming ever more adventurous with every plunge and steam. Pressure. What’s pressure?

There was none, the beds, endless supply of aforementioned fluffies and soothing music was a miniadventure. The pressure came later - after lunch in the Ozone Restaurant - and it was good. Pan-Asian food cooked to order was a treat, we chose the two course menu as it was a healthy day, and thought three might be excessive and not conducive to the Salsa session I

spring

had booked for later. Whilst light and incredibly tasty, it was satisfying and I was happy that a heart attack would not ensue mid-Salsa. My only mistake was taking it a little too far and having water instead of wine with my lunch. I’m a far better dancer after a glass of wine! Many gym classes are on offer, but dancing, I thought, would be a piece of cake, (healthy carrot one obvs). Enthusiasm made up, I hope, for lack of co-ordination and an excellent tutor almost brought out the Latin in me. Ytsara put the ‘treat’ into treatment. Drawing on centuries

Muscles soothed, I flipped over for my facial. So relaxing was this, I can’t tell you what it was like. I fell asleep, probably the calmest I’d been for many frenetic months, and woke to compliments on how radiant I looked.

ack Howard is a king when it comes to hair colour. He’s the man behind the ‘IT’ look of the last few seasons and the super-colourist the stars turn to when they want a fresh, new style. His celebrity client list includes The Fall actress Gillian Anderson, supermodels Suki Waterhouse and Poppy Delevigne,Vanessa Kirby, who plays Princess Margaret in the Crown, and former Victoria’s Secret model, Ana Beatriz Barros to name a few. Jack even went to Ana’s wedding as a guest. The hairdresser, who works at Paul Edmonds salon in Knightsbridge, London, also popularised balayagethe highlighting technique designed to give a soft, natural look-and his work has graced the glossy pages of Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire. He is now so highly-regarded in the industry that he travels the world educating hair salons about spring

balayage and sharing his expertise with other hairdressers. When he’s not working in Knightsbridge, he’s jet setting in Abu Dhabi for Sister Lounge or maintaining his hair colour extension brand. Which is how he finds himself, at the Gallery 108 hair salon, in Gosforth, working alongside salon manager Becky Watson and her team. “I’m busy, I like busy,” says the celebrity hairdresser. “Last week I was in Abu Dhabi, next week I’m in Paris. I’ll be going off to India later on in the year to do some teaching. The nicest part for me is that I’m still energised by it. What I really like is when I look at a client and she smiles because she loves what I’ve done - that’s the most important thing. Its service, I’m in the service sector - I like making people happy, I’m a pleaser.” Despite being in the industry for a number of

KEY HAIR TRENDS FOR 2017 BY JACK HOWARD: years Jack still faces challenges as a hairdresser - and it’s all about managing clients expectations. “So somebody comes in with jet black hair and she wants to be blonde and she’s seen somebody on Instagram with that, that’s not going to happen in one day, no matter how many fabulous tools we’ve got,” he says. “The integrity of the hair and the condition are the most important and it’s the priority.” Jack trained in Lincolnshire, before moving to London in the 80s and then to America to work in DC and New York. He came back to London in 2010. “Nobody was doing balayage so it was perfect timing for me.” The colouring technique has been the Number One colouring style of the past two years but the hairdresser insists balayage isn’t dead either. Foils though are on their way out ladies. “I think what’s

most important really is it’s about the placement of your colour to complement the hair cut, to work with the skin tone - all of those things,” says Jack. “My focus personally this year is instead of chasing a trend is really making sure that each individual client that comes in has the right colour for her. And freehand colour is here to stay, it’s part of the mainstream - it’s like end of story!” But do Geordie girls have what it takes to rock a good hairstyle? “The girls are very glamorous, they’ve totally got their thing down on their hair,” he smiles. “They’re not scared by it at all. I love coming here.” • Gallery 108, 108 High Street, Gosforth, Newcastle (0191) 285 9333 www.jackhoward.co.uk

This year we’ll see inude hair for blondes. It’s a combination of cool and blonde tones working together. Every decade has had a platinum blonde and this year is no different. “You can have healthier, longer platinum blonde hair,” Jack says. “With micro trends we can expect wild, crazy, fun colours, including green because it’s the Pantone colour of the year. I am seeing people asking for a request of a pastelised pink or a hint of blue, just in a piece somewhere so that they can have a taste of what’s going on without actually fully embracing it.” And brunettes? “Brunettes were our big story last year, a big conversation,” says Jack. “So [with] brunettes we’re going to see some metallics going on. And obviously what we are trying to do with brunettes is to encourage them that they can still have balayage but it can be darker - it doesn’t have to be blonde. Brunettes of course they can have those crazy bits of colour if they want to in there.”

This style is cut using only scissors for a softer finish. With this look the most important element to this style is the shape which needs to be kept very square. The front is left longer than the back but the whole haircut is blended. Once blowdried into position, add texture if needed and finish by using American Crew Boost Powder at the root, giving volume and support. Then place American Crew Fibre throughout the mid lengths and ends to enhance texture and hold.

<

THE SOFT POMP

THE WAVY CROP This is all about working with the natural wave and controlling the curl at the front. Back and sides are kept short but without showing skin and keeping a masculine shape. The hair is cut all the same length throughout the top and is kept short to achieve balance. To relax the wave and curl, a feather razor was used to remove some of the weight and American Crew Boost Cream was applied and left to dry naturally.

THE TEXTURED LOOK This style has a diverse look. Here we have kept the sides very sharp and clean whilst the top is loose and messy, maintaining that masculine shape. Again a feather razor was used to create sporadic texture on top which will also allow plenty of movement. To finish off this look, the sides were polished down with a brush and a hairdryer then I finger dried the top. American Crew Boost Powder was used to create support, then styled with American Crew Forming Cream which adds a light shine and hold.

ife is at a faster pace than ever and with thanks to the social media revolution we are the ‘see it now, buy it now’ generation as strong visuals from Instagram continue to dominate. Until now trends have always filtered through from catwalk designers to high street shops, but Spring Summer 2017 started like no other with huge fashion houses such as Burberry and Tom Ford offering instant ‘buy now’ exclusives on their Instagram as their shows were viewed for the very first time. Social media’s effect on fashion could be seen in Instagram inspired prints at Chanel including a fabulous and intricate trademark Chanel tweed jacket made from computer wires weaved together. Fast fashion is no longer just for the high street; designers have stepped up their game as a result of our social media habits changing how we shop.

POWER TRIP The eighties are here to stay and Balenciaga took the power shoulder to the extreme with accentuated box jackets, and with Teresa May as Prime Minister the power suit is here to stay! Chanel mixed shoulder pads with side caps (a trend I will not be trying). Saint Laurent saw Dynasty inspired metallic draped dresses with shoulder pads. GET THE LOOK: Style your shoulder pads with romantic ruffles as seen at Jacquemus Paris Fashion Week to soften the look.

New season accessories reflect this also, as the new ‘it bag’ has downsized to the mini bag - and is designed to match our fast paced digital lifestyle. A lippy and mobile phone is all you need. PINK TO MAKE THE BOYS WINK From marshmallow hues to bubble gum pop, all shades of pink dominated Paris Fashion Week. Chanel couture saw baby pink prom style dresses, so whatever shade of blush you choose this season it’s the must-have colour to be seen in. RUFFLE MANIA The uncertainty of Brexit is reflected on the catwalks of Spring/Summer 2017 with unstructured shirts to uneven hemlines and bold ruffles taking centre stage. From romantic frills with embroidered flowers at Alexander McQueen to ruffled power shoulders, uneven hemmed skirts and shirts at Mulberry. The new boho saw Erdem create pretty floral dresses with fluted sheer sleeves and skirts whilst Coach saw ruffled sheer dresses under punked up leather biker jackets. Be sure to punk up your floaty dresses to be on trend this season! GET THE LOOK: Get shirty! Silhouette of the season… Invest in a deconstructed shirt…

SPORTY SPICE And Milan made the message clear, if it’s sporty it’s in... Moving on from sports luxe to Athleisure, sportswear was particularly prominent at Milan Fashion Week. Street style saw fashionistas teaming hoodies with brocade suits. GET THE LOOK: invest in sporty silhouettes in feminine fabrics such a lace bomber jacket

PAUL GRAYDON HADN’T THOUGHT ABOUT FACIAL REJUVENATION UNTIL A FRIEND MENTIONED IT TO HIM AS HE WAS APPROACHING 40. NOW HE SAYS HE WOULDN’T BE WITHOUT IT. WE MET HIM TO CHAT FILLERS AND BOTOX...

W

e can’t help scrutinising Paul’s face as he arrives. The shoot is taking place in broad daylight which can be punishing but there are no signs of tight skin or a shiny forehead and he has a full range of facial expressions. We honestly wouldn’t know he had had anything done, instead he looks well and rested and considerably younger than his age. Over the last few years increasing numbers of men have been having facial rejuvenation but few are confident enough to talk about it openly for fear of being judged. The professionals report that men have treatments for a multitude of reasons. Some cite the need to keep a youthful appearance for their chosen career or profession. Others, like spring

Paul, have a milestone birthday approaching or are getting married. Paul had full face rejuvenation using dermal filler and Botulinum toxin to restore volume and contour the face at Queensway Skin Clinic with Dr Uzma Olbrich. “I wasn’t sure what to expect,” he admitted. “A female friend had recommended Queensway to me so I knew that I was in safe hands but I didn’t know if it would make that much difference.” The dental clinic environment was also a major factor in his decision making process. “Initially I liked the fact that I could sit in reception and no one would know what I was about to have done,” he said. “Now I am quite confident but when I first looked into having the treatment, I liked the fact it’s very discreet. “I had a consultation with Dr Uzma and she explained that we were aiming for a subtle, refreshed look. She works like an artist and looks at the face as a whole, rather than focusing on certain areas. I have a small line between my eyes caused by wearing glasses and she advised me to keep that so the whole effect was more subtle and natural. I wasn’t sure at first but she was absolutely right as it helps to keep my look really natural. It would look artificial for a man my age to have no facial lines,” he explains, “and I still look like me, but a better version.” Paul was delighted with the results and has been back. “I was really surprised that the improvement was noticeable within a couple of days,” he said. “I have had so many compliments about how good I look but no one has even guessed that I have had any work done. It’s changed the way I feel about myself, I just feel much more confident and comfortable in my own skin.” • Queensway has a dedicated men’s section at www.queenswayskinclinic.co.uk

SO WHERE DO TOP HOSPITALITY PROFESSIONALS DECAMP TO WHEN THEY NEED SOME ‘ME TIME’? WE ASKED THE GM OF MALMAISON NEWCASTLE, RICHARD LOCKSTONE, A MAN OF IMPECCABLY HIGH STANDARDS, FOR THE INSIDE SCOOP ON HIS SECRET HIDEAWAY...

Ragdale Hall M E LTO N M O W B R AY, L E I C S

I

know there are many people out there with much more stressful jobs than myself, however, like many of us, I have my days when I just need a glass of wine and a de-stress session at the gym followed by a hot shower and an early night. Managing the Malmaison hotel in Newcastle with its 100 plus staff can provide its share of stressful days, despite being a job that I absolutely love. In January that stress is definitely behind me as the festive season is out the way and I can find a little time to reinstate a social element back into my life; or at least find a little ‘me time’ and this January I found the perfect spot. Meet Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire, a world away from the hectic pace of business life. In total I spent two days and two nights here and I really did not want to leave. When you arrive the car is parked for you and you are asked to ensure that your phone is on silent and not used in the hall, so I thought I might as well turn it off for a total digital detox. You are then provided with a schedule for the duration of your stay. I was very pleased with my schedule, as it basically read: lunch, dinner, treatment, lunch, dinner! As food is always the highlight of my day this planner was perfect! spring

55

2017

That evening’s dinner was fantastic, a varied and quality menu with a great selection including lots of healthy, vegetarian, gluten free options and more. Happily I have none of the aforementioned dietary limitations and therefore excitedly chose a main course of Guinea fowl with creamy Anna potatoes, selection of perfectly cooked veg and a cocoa infused sauce. I also ordered a lovely bottle of southern Rhone red blend to pair; now this was my kind of spa! After dinner, to our delight, the snow began to fall and it continued overnight to add even more enchantment to the grounds of this wonderfully beautiful hall. The two days flew by, much of which was spent in the Hall’s simply outstanding, world class, thermal spa, (where the candle pool was my favourite) and in the many different peaceful relaxation areas around the Hall. After our top treatments in the fabulous spa, 48 hours later my batteries were fully recharged. And we didn’t even get the chance to take full advantage of the gym, highly comprehensive fitness class timetable, tennis, walks and much more. Thankfully there is always a next time. If you have a busy or stressful worklife, I can highly recommend a break away at Ragdale Hall, the benefits will remain with you long after you depart. • www.ragdalehall.co.uk

FOODIE

secrets THE FABULOUS LORD CREWE ARMS IN BLANCHLAND IS UNVEILING A NEW ADDITION – A FOODIE HAVEN WHICH HAS THE COUNTRY’S HIPPEST CHEFS HEADING NORTH TO HOLD SOME INCREDIBLE FOOD EVENTS. LA DI DA HAS THE EXCLUSIVE…

W

e’re very good at keeping secrets but this one is so exciting that we must admit it’s been hard not to share it earlier. A few years ago we had the pleasure of having an exclusive sneak peek at the Lord Crewe Arms just before it opened and even then we could tell it was something special. Over the last few years the plaudits have kept coming. The Guardian reviewer cited it as one of the top three hotels he had ever stayed at, noting that it was ‘a rare example of a place that gets everything right’ whilst Tatler has named it as one of Europe’s 50 most romantic hotels. Owned by the same family who have a stable of stylish hotels such as the Cotswolds Calcot Manor and Barnsley House, it was always going to have the wow factor. heart of the breathtaking North Pennine Area of Natural Beauty and it’s easy to see why this very special hotel and restaurant has created a real buzz. The last few years have seen it become a fabulous bolthole for London glitterati, serious foodies and a regular contingent of well-heeled shooting parties who arrive with their own butlers to stay in the beautifully appointed yet cosy rooms and cottages. But it’s the charm, friendliness and ‘can do’ approach of its Northern staff who have turned it into somewhere really magical and a home from home. Villagers still use it as their local, sitting in the Crypt bar having ‘bait’ and a guest ale, dogs are happily welcomed (and spoilt rotten) and acclaimed chef Simon Hicks serves up the finest seasonal produce in theatrical style including the Lord Crewe’s epic spit roasts in their magnificent fireplaces. grows on the doorstep he’ll use it. “I love traditional recipes, making them my own, chucking in some of my Antipodean character to get the taste buds tap dancing,” he tells us. “Having just spent the last few months cosied up by the fireside with our spit roasts (actually, we do them all year here) everyone’s itching to get out for long country walks, see the lambs and calves enjoying the pastures and harvest the first crops of our iconic vegetables and herbs. Think Yorkshire rhubarb, Jersey Royals and English asparagus. And whilst you’re out and about enjoying the countryside pick some of the wild garlic leaves that grow everywhere, particularly in woodland. It’s an easy and healthy ingredient for a tasty risotto or velouté simply served with freshly baked bread,” he advises. It’s this expertise and wealth of foodie knowhow that is behind Simon’s new venture The Gatehouse, a reinvention of an ancient building opposite the inn with interiors by London designer Nicky Farquhar. Flower Afternoon Tea

Malmaison

If you’re heading to the Chelsea Flower Show why not treat yourself to a fabulous floral tea at Lancaster London? From 3 May until 31 May 2017, the chefs will present the ‘blooming marvellous’ Flower Afternoon Tea. A beautifully botanical arrangement of sweet delights, it includes: a creamy Lavender chocolate mousse cake; White chocolate macaroons topped with crystallised violets; and a tangy Lime and elderflower trifle with edible flowers. A Royal Affair The British tradition of afternoon tea began in the 19th century with Queen Victoria, one of its early pioneers. She was such a big fan of the tea parties she even had her very own cake made. In homage to Queen Victoria, The Majestic Hotel in Harrogate has handpicked period treats and sandwiches from the era to create its coveted afternoon tea collection. Choose between the Afternoon Tea (£15) offering a selection of teas alongside a traditional platter and a generous slice of Victoria sponge cake or the Savoury Tea (£19.50), complete with miniature picnic items and Harrogate blue cream. Add a glass of Champagne for £7.50 to make it a Royal Afternoon Tea. www.majestichotelharrogate.co.uk

Buddha’s hand is a citrus variety originating in the East. The fruit, the thick skin rich in essential oils, is very fragrant and not as bitter as other types of citrus fruit. Owing to its aroma and mild flavour it is highly recommended for use in cocktails where, in addition, it provides a delicate exotic touch. Its appearance is very peculiar since the fruit is divided into finger-like sections. It’s this strangely beautiful fruit that forms the base of the ultra-premium Botanic Gin, made by Spanish Sherry Bodega, Williams & Humbert. Distilled at the Langley Distillery, which was founded in Birmingham in 1920 and sited over ancient underground water sources, Botanic London Dry Gin acquires its definitive personality in Bodegas Williams & Humbert thanks to its fusion with a wide variety of more than 10 100% natural botanicals, which grant it a fine and elegantly balanced flavour. There are two editions, Premium and Ultra Premium and if it’s a Martini you’re fantasizing about, go that extra mile and buy the Ultra Premium. You won’t be sorry, just coat your glass with Vermouth (no more) and add gin.

DYFI POLLINATION Created by two brothers, in the DYFI biosphere in wales and made on a very micro-scale with huge human effort going into every bottle. There will be two incarnations, the ‘Pollination Gin’ put together based on the available plants growing in the valley leading up to the summer - and the Hibernation Gin which will be harvested in the later summer and then will ‘over-winter’ in a used White Port barrel. This really is fantastic, an overwhelming taste sensation, complex, floral and beautifully herbaceous. The Dyfi is recognised by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, and provides the brothers Cameron with an enviable and unique flora spectrum to draw upon, as well as a meticulous selection of the finest classic gin botanicals. Pollination gin is produced by the highest standard spring

65

London Dry method, in extremely limited small batches, using pure grain spirit and locally drawn spring water. The foraged botanicals come from within the Biosphere: from the Snowdonia foothills, through the Dyfi Forest, and down to the estuary marshlands. On a canvas of carefully selected classic gin botanicals, they ‘paint’ the flavours only Dyfi can combine, including wild flowers, aromatic leaves, fruits and conifer tips. Steeping these components together in a temperature-controlled maceration, before precision-distilling in small Colorado stills. Pollination Gin can’t be created all year round, and in order to ensure sustainability, production is necessarily very limited. This is proper gin, without trying to excuse the juniper. Try it simply with a bit of dillweed.

DUBBED THE ‘ANTONIO BANDERAS OF COOKING’ BY GORDON RAMSAY, EX EL BULLI ALUMNI OMAR ALLIBHOY HAS OPENED TAPAS REVOLUTION IN NEWCASTLE. LA DI DA CATCHES UP WITH HIM FOR A CHAT AND A COOKING MASTERCLASS... How much did working for Ferran Adria at El Bulli affect your approach and personal style of cooking? “Working with Ferran Adria was a great experience, he took Spanish gastronomy to a new level with his ground-breaking ideas, deconstruction, sous vide, foams – things we’d never seen before. It was a really exciting time to be working as a young chef in Spain. I learnt a lot from working with him, how to run a kitchen, and some of my dishes today have a level of technique that comes from my days of working under him.” What will our readers experience at your restaurant? “It’s a tapas bar so brings the bar element, the café element and the restaurant altogether, like the traditional tapas bars in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. A tapas bar in Spain is there for absolutely everything you want, perhaps a coffee in the morning, light lunch, set menu, a proper sit down dinner or just after work drinks. In Spain it’s our way of life. Beer, wine, tapas and good company with laughter is how we like to socialise.” What signature dishes should they look out for? “There are a few classics on the menu like Calamares fritos (deep fried squid with aioli) and Croquetas de jamón (deep-fried Iberico ham and bechamel croquettes) that everyone will want to try, and I’ve put my own touch on. There are also some larger sharing dishes, including the Txuleton de ternera – a Rib eye and Sirloin steak from 10 year old cows in the Basque region of Spain, grass fed and aged for 40 days, it’s a great dish for sharing and tasting.”

How important is the drink offer to your restaurant? “Wine can be really important to the tapas experience, the perfect food and wine pairing can take a dish to the next level and the wrong matching can taste horrible and ruin your food! If enjoyed in moderation, wine enhances conversation and helps with a great “sobremesa” - in Spain we love to stay at the table after a meal, share stories, laughter and chat for hours. We also have a Spanish inspired cocktail menu, Gin Tonics and Estrella Galicia beer for those who don’t drink wine.” What is the ethos behind your food? “I like to refine classics and give a twist to Spanish food. At home I like to cook a good Thai curry and when I go out I like to eat tapas with friends. My ethos is sharing how good authentic tapas is and how easy it is to cook Spanish food at home, and that’s where Tapas Revolution first came from. Parallel to this mission I wanted to bring the casual, convivial tapas bars of Spain to the UK, with good quality, authentic tapas and that’s how my tapas bars started - adopting the same name. As for produce, I deal directly with artisans and producers back in Spain and produce is brought to me by demand. spring

THE TAPAS REVOLUTION in Eldon Square, Newcastle, offers dishes cooked with the finest ingredients sourced from small artisan producers in Spain and are all freshly prepared. Served alongside premium Gin Tonics, in the traditional Copa de Balón (balloon glass) and with an extensive Spanish inspired cocktail list created in collaboration with the award winning Cocktail Trading Co, it had La Di Da written all over it. Add in the fact that in the flesh Omar certainly lives up to the comparison with the suave Antonio Banderas, his nickname from fellow chef Gordon Ramsey, and cooks like a dream and we knew this was going to be a very special experience. I initially chose a goldfish bowl sized glass of pomegranate G&T (sadly my only alcoholic drink due to having to drive home) which was delicious. Omar was cutting a Serrano ham when I arrived which he served with olives and honeyed almonds. Having started his career at the iconic El Bulli, he prides himself on the fact that all of his ingredients are of Spanish origin and the highest quality, even the soft drinks are made in front of you from fresh ingredients and

the lemonade was incredible. I went into the kitchen to prepare four tapas dishes (drink in hand) under his expert tuition: buttery chilli king prawns (the size of a baby’s arm) sautéed in chives, garlicky cuttle fish, chorizo fried in cider and a Spanish version of bruschetta, toasted and rubbed in garlic before being covered in a sweet tomato puree drizzled with olive oil. Once we’d created our masterpieces we brought them to the long table and began our feast! Smokey chicken paella (prepared by the chefs) was also brought out, so it was an absolutely delicious spread. Chatting to Omar about his mission to bring authentic tapas culture to the UK, it’s clear that Tapas Revolution is bringing something really special to Newcastle, not just the outstanding food and drink offer, but the authentically Spanish social aspect to the experience. I loved it and have already made plans to return with friends for more of that fabulous food and splendid cocktails.

A distributor makes no difference to me; it’s the passionate producer that I’m behind. We have the most amazing smokehouse in Madrid, we’re bringing the best ham in the world Jamon iberico de bellota Joselito and it’s simply the greatest.” Where are your favourite restaurants in the UK? “Galvin Bistrot de Luxe, the food and service are always really good. It has a Parisian bistro feel that I love and it’s a place I’ve gone to over a dozen times. I recommend trying any of their soups, but they do all the classics perfectly – steak tartare, and crab lasagne. I recently went to Sager & Wilde on Paradise Row in East London and had the best meal I’ve had this year. The menu is all seasonal and I like Head Chef Chris Leach’s pared back style.” • www.tapasrevolution.com/newcastle Grey Quarter, Eldon Square, Newcastle.

or a local boy, chef Marcus Hall has spent very little time cooking in his home town of Darlington. He has been too busy working around the world and opening and heading up some of the most prestigious establishments Marcus joined The Bannatyne Hotel from the Ushuaia Tower in Ibiza, the island’s first five star hotel which he helped to open. He also worked at the five star Sydney Hyatt Regency for four years and has travelled the world several times over working at a very high level at top hotels. As the appeal of living overseas began to wane, Marcus returned to the UK and worked at Aldwark Manor Golf Hotel and Spa near York and as head chef for De Vere hotels, based at Oulton Hall near Leeds. Now he has come home properly with the new position in the heart of Darlington. He has joined Bannatyne Hotel, a stunning Grade II listed Georgian town house in Darlington, to launch a new culinary experience. “I am delighted to be joining an organisation like Bannatyne’s,” he said. “I have spent a few weeks back in Darlington finding out where the best places to eat are and taking a look at what is happening on the food scene but I already had thoughts on where we need to take the dining experience here. “I want to ensure that Maxine’s is the place to dine in the Darlington area and customers have an exceptional experience,” he adds. “I have helped deliver five star experiences around the globe and now I want to create

something really special for my home town.” Keen to put his own stamp on Maxine’s restaurant, Marcus has developed new menus and both the Early Bird and A La Carte menus have been refreshed. These now include delicacies such as Risotto of New Season Alba White Truffle, Moorland Tam

‘Everyone goes back to the basics of French cooking and tries to put their own twist on it,” he says, “but sometimes the basics are there for a reason because they cannot be bettered. Betty’s in York, for example, are great at what they do, their Afternoon Tea is about the basics, sandwiches, cakes and scones, but they’re the best ones around.” “Our menu has the same approach, excellence will run through every element whether it’s a nice burger with beautifully done duck fat chips or a fantastic breakfast or an a la carte meal, it all needs to be consistent and we need to excel at it.” The hotel has already received a lot of positive feedback on the menus. These also include extensive vegetarian and gluten free options and, after a lot of hard work, Marcus believes the dining offer is spot on, bringing a taste of five star cooking to Darlington. “I am really pleased with our offer. The new menus are superb, whether it is breakfast, afternoon tea or dinner. I know that both hotel guests and diners will be impressed with the offering, which features the freshest ingredients and caters for all palates, including vegetarian and gluten-free customers,” he says. “The presentation is beautiful and we ensure we deliver not only in terms of the menu but with the service element as well, it’s important that it’s a really special experience for our guests.”

t’s not everyday that you get an invite to lunch at a top French chef ’s home so it was with a happy heart and an empty stomach that I set off on the drive through gorgeous honey stoned Yorkshire villages for my lunch date. I was going to the home of classically trained chef Yves Quemerais.Yves made his home in Yorkshire after falling in love with ‘God’s own county’ during his holidays. Yves trained under the acclaimed chef Alain Ducasse and worked in Paris as a private chef for governors, politicians and chief executives and has even cooked for Sir Richard Branson. He set up his French Chef at Home business to create authentic and bespoke French cuisine at people’s homes for special occasions, corporate events or just a luxury night in. I was met by Yves and his lovely wife Anne who helps him in the business. The dinner table was beautifully set and we started our fabulous lunch with Jerusalem artichoke veloute with prawn which was exquisitely creamy. The next course was Pan Fried Scallop on a buckwheat blini on a foggy day which arrived in a see through cloche with a puff of smoke for a lovely theatrical flourish and which imparted an earthy smokiness to the perfectly cooked scallop.

Gorgeous food, no prep, no washing up and plenty of wow factor, just sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy your own personal restaurant. estled quietly in the heart of the famous Cotswold Hills lies this most delightful of little towns, Painswick. Strolling around the narrow streets of honey coloured stone, revealing that heady mix of pretty little cottages and Georgian grandeur so typical of this area, we slowly meander back to ‘The Painswick’ through the Painswick churchyard which is famous for its 99 yew trees dating back to the 18th century. A warm greeting awaited us from our host and the hotel’s manager, Luke Millikin, who quickly checked us in and whisked up to our room. ‘The Whitchurch Silk’ is a spacious room with mullioned windows and stunning views across the Painswick Valley. There we set about settling in whilst one of the Painswick team, Cat, set up a complimentary X Box for the children. I must admit, the X Box was a first for us but a definite hit with the children, who at 10 and 7 years can take some containing … but not when there are monsters to slay it would seem! With equal success, the hotel manages to be both chic and

The children enjoyed their afternoon tea whilst playing Guess Who and we felt the need to sample a large glass of Marlborough Sauv Blanc whilst perusing some of the maps available for short, medium or long walks …. no excuse that we left our wellies at home as there is a row of welly boots begging to be borrowed! With the baby sitter pre-booked (and for a very reasonable fee I might add), we headed down to dinner for the evening. Sitting by the open fire in the drawing room we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks while being left to peruse the menu. My husband opted for the Salcombe crab thermidor, crab gravy followed by the Pan fried stone bass, beef shin

ravioli, buttered greens whilst I chose the Roasted scallops, welsh rarebit & bacon followed by Chicken Kiev, mash, parsley & garlic butter. Utterly delicious and so flavoursome and filling that there was no room for dessert. After the most fabulous night’s sleep in the sumptuously comfortable bed with heavenly fluffy duvet and pillows encased in the very finest of Egyptian cotton atop a velvet topper, I kid you not when I tell you that I have since been on to their suppliers, Mitre, and ordered The Painswick bedding range to create our very own ‘Painswick’ at home – yes, it really was THAT good. Breakfast at The Painswick is an absolute treat! The menu is extensive with unusual offerings such as The Full Elvis with waffles, banana, peanut butter ice cream, crispy bacon and chocolate sauce. (This will cure most minor ailments; mainly hang overs we are reliably informed!) We opted for the Eggs Benedict and I can assure you that it did not disappoint. I must note that there are two treatment rooms on the top floor of the hotel – sadly I didn’t have time to make use of them but under the ‘Calcot Hotels Collection’ umbrella I am confident that they and the treatments available will be top notch. Painswick lies halfway along the famous Cotswold Way footpath which runs from Bath to Chipping Campden on the A46 between Stroud and Cheltenham. The celebrated Rococo Gardens at Painswick House are open to the public throughout the year. The Painswick Arts Festival runs for six weeks from middle of July to August bank holiday. THE COACH HOUSE AT MIDDLETON LODGE IS A SUPER STYLISH HOTEL, RESTAURANT AND SPA WITH ANOTHER NEW BABY ON THE WAY. LINDA JANE WESTPHAL REPORTS...

A

lthough it has won serious accolades there is still a sense of the Coach House at Middleton Lodge being a rather fabulous secret for those ‘in the know’. Based near Richmond, N Yorks, it was originally the stables of the stunning Georgian country retreat, Middleton Lodge. The Coach House now boasts a stylish restaurant, treatment rooms and private dining room all set around a jawdroppingly gorgeous courtyard. All honey stoned Georgian walls and elegant proportions, the courtyard, studded with lavender and lit braziers, is spectacularly romantic even without the acres of flower filled woodlands that surround it. The latest new addition will be the new 2.5 acre Kitchen Garden, which will open in Spring 2018. The Kitchen Garden is a natural addition to the Restaurant which is focused on locally sourced seasonal produce, with a clear estate to plate ethos under the expert eye of Head Chef Gareth Rayner. The restaurant is open for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Roasts on a Sunday as well as Afternoon Tea. If you have the time, stay the night, the bedrooms need to be seen to be believed. Spacious and breathtakingly stylish, they include huge bathrooms, standalone baths, vintage tiles, fabulous beds and quirky antiques. spring

The Coach House also plays host to some fabulous events. Not only is it home to Yorkshire’s most beautiful open-air cinema but it also has open air theatre productions including Jane Eyre and Wind in the Willows this summer. During Easter it will be holding traditional Easter activities such as egg hunting and will also have a petting zoo, a Punch and Judy Show and a crepe van and sweet truck on hand when your energy levels begin to flag. • For more information on the events please go to www. middletonlodge.co.uk

The first thing to think about when choosing your engagement ring is that very ‘on trend’ pieces date quickly and are difficult to match from stock if the wedding ring is then bought 18 months to two years later. The bespoke part of our business can match any piece no matter what but the bespoke process can take around 12 weeks to complete a piece from inception and design to delivery.

2

When you choose your engagement ring bear in mind that this can impact on the later design of your wedding ring. Try and keep the engagement and wedding ring metals the same ideally as a platinum engagement ring will wear away at an 18ct/9ct ring fairly quickly. A popular recommendation is the ‘wedfit’ solution where your engagement ring is designed in such a

stones in the coloured category are Tanzanite - a purple/blue stone and Peridot green stone although these are not as resilient as the diamond, sapphire or ruby.

5

Fashion wise 18ct pink gold mixed with large coloured stones and also high quality diamonds, oval diamonds of between .70 and 1.5 carat, are really popular at the moment. The .70ct oval suits a client with smaller fingers and gives a real ‘wow’ factor. The most popular diamond shape is still the iconic round brilliant whilst the princess or square diamond seems to have lost popularity in recent years and is being replaced by the oval shape or Radiant/Asscher cut. This has more of a classic emerald cut shape but with more facets cut onto the stone to give it more life and fire.

4

Thinking of picking a coloured stone for an engagement ring? Emeralds can cost more than diamonds and if not treated with the utmost care are very easily damaged, even taking it out of cold water and placing it into hot water can easily shatter the stone. Precious stones that have the most longevity in terms of wear and resistance are of course diamonds, sapphire and rubies. Other popular spring

I have come across clients who will not wear certain stones as they are seen as unlucky such as pearl, coral or opal. This is, of course, an urban myth, although all are very easily damaged which may be how they came to be associated with bad luck.

6

Incorporating inherited jewellery and redesigning into a unique bespoke piece that complements the sentiment attached to it is increasingly popular and a lovely way to create something truly special. You are involved in the design process from the very start and shown the unique piece as it evolves until completion.

7

Finally, once you have the ring of your dreams, keep it in prime condition by using Fairy Liquid ‘green’ with some fairly warm water and an inexpensive child’s electric toothbrush. This can get into all of the delicate areas without causing any damage, then always rinse in clean water so it really sparkles. • www.goldsmiths.co.uk

SPLURGE PROFESSIONAL SHOPPER AND SLAVE TO STYLE, LAUREN HEDLEY SPENT SOME TIME – RATHER THAN HER PAY PACKET FOR A CHANGE – IN OUR FAVOURITE DEPARTMENT STORE TO FIND OUT WHAT’S ON OFFER FOR LADIES WHO LUNCH AND BRIDES-TO-BE

W

e’ve all imagined what we’d do if we got locked in a shopping centre and had free run of it for the night… Well it wasn’t quite the same thing, but it certainly felt like I was the number one customer a couple of Saturdays ago when I was treated to the ultimate pamper package from the team at John Lewis Newcastle. As La Di Da’s latest bridal recruit, scooped up following a winter proposal, the opportunity to enjoy the John Lewis experience in full wasn’t one I was going to turn down. I’m already an avid haberdashery visitor, homeware department regular and Chanel sunglasses stalker, so a packed schedule from fashion to food within the same four walls was music to my ears. I started my morning with a personal styling service from Josta, an expert in finding that perfect outfit for any occasion. With my newly-crowned status as blushing bride in waiting, white gowns were the order of the day. No dress was safe as I slipped into every slinky silhouette on the shelves – beaded, sleeved, fitted, silky, backless; I could go on. Josta was eloquent as she was honest, not afraid to usher me out of a dress which wasn’t doing my figure any favours. Going in with an open mind, she made me see the bigger picture about what actually suits me and not having tunnel vision, solely seeking an extravagant flurry of fabric and feathers as a way to wow when I walk down the aisle. Keeping things simple was definitely a valuable lesson learned. A new collection to John Lewis, the

While I could well have been tempted into Kuoni Travel to book a honeymoon of a lifetime to Italy’s Riviera, a Mediterranean meal was too much to resist, taking a table for two at trendy eatery Rossopomodoro. My excuse: energy levels depleted after rigorous fitting room activities. A destination with a difference, Rossopomodoro on the first floor of John Lewis, overlooking the intu Eldon Square mall below, brings a taste of true Neopolitan cuisine to the city centre. After a pick-me-up latté and a drop of fizz, I was ready for the task at hand. We sampled a sharing starter of Mozzarellona recommended to us by a charming waitress, although it was clear when it arrived that we were going to be there a

while. Manager Cristian, originally from Sardinia explains the star of the dish – a fist of the freshest, creamiest, melt-in-your-mouth buffalo mozzarella – is flown in from ‘Napoli’ (otherwise known Naples in our non-native tongue) each Tuesday and Friday. The generous portion was served on a bed of focaccia bread, olive oil-drizzled tomatoes, Parma ham and basil. As delicious as it was, we had to call in back-up to help finish it off. To follow, it had to be a traditional Neopolitan pizza from the wood-fired oven installed at the focal point of the restaurant’s contemporary open-kitchen. The dough was light, the crusts soft and the slices crispy all in good measure, laden with authentic and flavourful ingredients. Dessert was all about the Tortino al Cioccolato, a warm, fluffy chocolate soufflé with vanilla ice cream on the side. Decadence done right. I’ve dined there before and will be returning monthly without a doubt to work my way through the menu.

QUEEN FOR THE AFTERNOON A few laps of the womenswear floor meant it was time to take the weight off again so I wandered over to The Beauty Retreat to check in for a facial with ESPA. A short consultation was arranged by Leanne to identify purpose and preferences before I made myself comfortable in a dimly-lit, aroma-filled therapy room to begin my treatment. Therapist Sophie tells me the foundation of ESPA is to grow old gracefully and trust your natural instincts as she waves a choice of two scents under my nose for me to breathe in and select the one I was most drawn to.

My top pick was the flowing, cowl back Ghost Hollywood Claudia Dress in Ivory, at only £225. Its signature designer seamless construction ensured a smooth drape to elegant effect. For the finishing touches, the store carries its own brand of footwear called Rainbow Club which has sophisticated styles at great value, and of course a number of other popular names including Dune, Kurt Geiger and Ted Baker. And you don’t have to stumble far to find everything else you need; lacey lingerie, sparkling jewellery and a hat for the MOTB (code for Mother of the Bride). Before I risked walking away with a wedding dress for every hourly engagement on the big day, I was whisked off for a welcome brunch.

This sensory journey is to harness the power of essential oils and the belief that our bodies will opt for what they need most. My selection reflected this theory well when it came to the skin analysis. This is where the therapists demonstrate what different colours mean on your face under a special lamp and advise how best to combat any issues, such as dehydrated areas.Very clever stuff that reinforced the necessity of my quest to find a delicate but effective eye moisturiser. The facial itself was faultless and enough to make me never want to leave. Just the remedy to forget the stresses of daily life and revel in some real indulgence! A British company, ESPA originated in leading luxury spas which was the feeling achieved and once Sophie talked me through the wide skincare range with many products I was surprised to discover, my handbag became home to a wishlist for a wrinkle-free future. It is slowly being ticked off as I make my weekly strategic stroll past the counter. Must-haves include the Optimal Skin ProCleanser (£31), Balancing Herbal Spafresh toner (£24) and the Tri-Active™ Advanced Instant Facial age-defying concentrate (£58). To make the most of my radiant and clean complexion, I perched myself at the Clarins concession for an express make-up application by the lovely Alison. She armed herself with a so-called “posh polyfilla”,

Lisse Minute Base Comblante (£26.50), to prime and prep and then mixed BB Detox Fluid (£30) with Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base (£26.50) in Champagne (why, of course!) for a flawless glow. The latter boasts katafray bark extract for its hydrating benefits, brightening white tea and an anti-pollution barrier to protect from toxins in the air. I lasted all of fifteen minutes without my mascara lifeline – Alison used Supra Volume Mascara (£21.50) containing cassia flower wax in the formula which helps improve lash volume by 17.6% in four weeks.Yes, I took notes! A lick of long-wearing, liquid Instant Concealer (£22) to correct dark circles and I was good to go. The Clarins cult buy combines soothing aloe vera and caffeine to drain excess water from the eye area causing any puffiness. Before I stepped outside the store, I asked about the gift list service which is a vow I’m ready to make right now. Where do I sign up? Oh, in case you’re asking, on the website or in-store! So whether you’re planning to tie the knot, overhaul your look or go all out with a self-spree, John Lewis seems to have it all under one roof; a masterclass in retail I’ll happily subscribe to for years to come… for richer, for poorer. • Lauren Hedley, account director at OPR John Lewis, intu Eldon Square, Newcastle spring

BODY

RAMP UP YOUR CARDIO

IT’S NOT ONLY SUPERMODELS WHO NEED A BANGING BOD – ACROSS THE REGION, BRIDES-TO-BE ARE SHEDDING POUNDS IN PREPARATION FOR THEIR OWN CATWALK MOMENT.

Some things in life are just unavoidable and if you want to improve your fitness, lose weight and tone up then you need to get moving. Put your trainers on and head for the rowing machines and cross trainers – or just set off around the block – and get your heart racing. The trick is to push yourself a little bit harder each time. By adding just an extra couple of minutes each time, you will see a difference really quickly.

USE FREE WEIGHTS Did anyone ever tell you size isn’t everything? Well when it comes to free weights that’s often the case. If your aim is to tone up, then choose lighter weights and do more repetitions.Your instructor will show you the best exercises to tackle your problem areas: arm curls, for example, will rid you of bingo wings - and then you should aim to do three sets of between 20 and 30 repetitions.

JOIN A CLASS The great thing about classes is that they spur you on, even when you’re so shattered you’re seeing stars. Classics, like Zumba and Body Blitz, are classics because they work but, if you’re looking for something different, try HIT – high intensity training. These classes will push you to the max but the effects are amazing and (hold this thought) they only last 30 mins. Go on – feel the burn.

ut, remember, squeezing into the dress is just the start – you’ll also need stamina and fitness to see you through the day and make sure you look your beautiful best. So, who better to get you into shape than Cliff Thompson, personal trainer at Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa, who’s come up with a fivepoint plan for looking fab. He’s ex-military, girls – so, get in line.

DIET You need to make sure you eat right – and that doesn’t mean cutting out food groups.Try and keep it low fat by grilling chicken and fish and steaming vegetables and include lots of fruit: smoothies, in particular, are a great, natural source of energy. Carbs have had a lot of bad press but they are also an important source of energy. The trick is to opt for ‘good’ carbs, such as pulses, wholegrains and brown rice. spring

Sometimes the old ways are still the best and, for all round exercise for the mind as well as the body, swimming’s where it’s at. And the joy of it is, that the water’s doing most of the work. As long as you plough up and down – pushing yourself to a do a couple more lengths each time – you will see results. You’ll feel calmer and more relaxed, too and, as all brides-to-be know, that’s up there with a thigh gap on the great wedding wish list. LET THEM E AT CAKE!

B

eing a La Di Da lady I love cake, shooting, and cutting a dash in tweed so meeting a fellow group of lady shooters who end their day with homemade cake on vintage china and a cup of tea, I was in seventh heaven. The fact that they share our passion for gin just sealed the deal. The hugely popular Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club was set up by Victoria Knowles-Lacks who describes herself as ‘an accidental business woman’. The club is for women only and it is all about making friends, having a jolly good time learning to shoot (or perfecting your skills) with excellent coaching and eating cake - how very La Di Da! It doesn’t matter if you are a proficient shot or have never held a gun before, the club is there to embrace you

whatever your level, and you don’t even have to be able to bake! Victoria has been a keen shot since the age of 21 after her uncle introduced her to the sport. “I loved shooting from the get go but often wished I had some fun ladies to shoot alongside and have a cup of tea with at the end of the day,” she explains. “I managed to persuade four of my girlfriends who had never shot before to try clay shooting with me. To overcome their reluctance to venture out on a rainy autumn afternoon I baked a homemade Victoria Sponge Sandwich to persuade them,” she explained. The homemade cake, complete with a crystal cake stand for serving natch, worked and after a fun and successful day you could say the rest is history. That was in 2011 and over the past five years the club has had over 10,000 women shoot with them at their events across the country. I went along to one of the club’s clay shooting days at Hazel Bank, near Harrogate. I have shot before but only occasionally and not for about two years so I am far from being a proficient shot. I was put into a group of beginners who were all very friendly. I was a bit nervous going to an

of our instructor Ned, and I got to know the other girls by having a natter inbetween shots. Despite being put with eight rather feisty (but fun) ladies, Ned calmly led each of us through the shots so that we were all hitting a good number of clays by the end. After a couple of hours shooting we all went back to the clubhouse with the intermediate and advanced shooters to have cake and tea, which was very civilised. It was lovely chatting to the more advanced lady guns and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. All of the delicious cakes had been baked by Bun Club ladies. A particular favourite, and welldeserved winner of the cake competition, was a gin and tonic cake, which was heavenly. The day finished with the presentation of awards to the best shots and, of course, the best cake. I was already itching to get out shooting again so I am planning my next shoot with the Bun Club ladies. You don’t need to be a member to shoot with them but they do have membership options with great benefits. The Bun Club has shoots planned all over the country at luxurious shooting lodges. Check out their website for more information but, be warned, it has some fabulous products on there from raspberry gin to silk scarves, which you may find hard to resist. • www.shotgunandchelseabunclub.co.uk

Going underground… AN HISTORIC TUNNEL THAT RUNS UNDERNEATH NEWCASTLE HAS BECOME A FABULOUS NIGHT OUT FOR THOSE IN THE KNOW. FROM TIPPLES IN THE TUNNEL TO THESPIAN PRODUCTIONS, THIS QUIRKY VENUE IS CELEBRATING ITS 175TH BIRTHDAY IN FINE STYLE. LA DI DA’S NICOLE ABDUL WENT IN TO FIND OUT MORE…

have to say, when I first heard I would be looking around a dark old tunnel, I can’t say I was dashing to grab my Dubarrys and coat. However on hearing that it regularly played host to wine tastings, I was intrigued enough to venture along. Lying deep below the city of Newcastle, the tunnel is a fabulous secret long forgotten by the busy metropolis above. Built between 1839 and 1842, the Victoria Tunnel was originally a wagon way to transport coal across the city. It spans the length of Newcastle, starting at the Town Moor and ending at the River Tyne. Its history doesn’t end when the colliery closed in 1860 though. It came back in use as an air raid shelter during the Second World War, where it kept residents of Newcastle safe during the numerous bombings. Up to nine thousand people of all ages and walks of life would be sheltered underground for eight to eighteen hours a time. Some people even chose to live in the tunnel for the duration of the war.

The Tunnel has also had some rather quirkier roles during its lifespan, being used as a mushroom factory and even as someone’s garden shed (albeit a rather long one!). It was then largely forgotten about until 2010 when funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Tyne and Wear Partnership, allowed it to be re-opened. The funding allowed Newcastle City Council to give guided tours, which are now provided by the fabulous Ouseburn Trust. Despite being initially reluctant, I loved my tour from Kelly, who works at the Trust. Her passion and enthusiasm shone through during the fantastic tour and not only do you hear the history of the Tunnel, but also the stories of people who used it. I loved it and I can’t wait to go back to learn more about this special place. The Tunnel is now host to some wonderful events that are totally La Di Da! How does a ‘Tipple in the Tunnel’ sound? the luscious Hotel Du Vin? Or if you are more of a thespian, the Tunnel is also host to intimate productions of plays. A ‘must attend’ is a wonderful Victorian soiree at the Assembly Rooms, complete with fine food and a Victorian music hall show which is being held to mark its 175th anniversary. The soiree will be held at the Assembly Rooms, where the original party took place and includes fine food and a Victorian music hall show, recreating the opening party of the Tunnel in 1842. The Ouseburn Trust is manned by volunteers and works hard to raise money to keep the tunnel alive for future generations. I couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide than Kelly who shared with me what the Tunnel meant to her. Kelly volunteered after she went on a tour during a low point in her life. The Tunnel helped her come through a dark time. Not only that, but she also met the love of her life at the entrance to the Tunnel before a tour she was giving. They are now hoping to get married in the Tunnel one day so it really is a tunnel of love. I certainly fell in love with it; it’s a truly special experience and a great piece of Newcastle history. • Find out more information about tours and events at: www.ouseburntrust.org.uk or Facebook page @VictoriaTunnelTours.

MOTORING EDITOR GRAHAM COURTNEY PUTS THE LATEST LAUNCHES THROUGH THEIR PACES…

I

assume by now that most of you know MINI is owned by BMW. Consequently, no matter whether you go for a Beemer or a MINI, you end up with a quality car that’s good to drive. It also means you get a steady trickle of new models. Here are two of their latest plus a selection of some other rather tasty stuff that could tempt you to part with some filthy lucre.

BMW 5 SERIES When it comes to an executive express, BMW has the market cornered with their 5 Series. However, the Munich boffins know that the competition keeps on catching-up, so they’ve launched a new model which is arriving now in your local BMW dealer. BMW follows the ‘evolution not revolution’ theory which means, in a nutshell, unless you are a spring

BMW 5 Series aficionado, from a distance you’ll struggle to tell the difference between this one and the outgoing 5 Series. That’s no bad thing because it still looked fresh and stylish. The addition of some subtle bodywork curves and a reworked grille merely freshens-up the appeal. Prices start at £36,025 for what is likely to be the most popular model in the UK, the 520d SE which returns 68mpg from its 2.0 litre diesel engine. When we went on the launch we loved the 4-wheel drive 530d xDrive SE which tips the scales at £45,965. It has pace (0-60 in 5.4 seconds, top speed 155mph) wonderful roadholding and great economy (56.5mpg). The 8-speed auto ‘box is terrific. There are petrol engines in the range but we wouldn’t bother unless you really need the ultimate in refinement.

Motors

VOLVO V90 Need to carry everything AND the kitchen sink? Get the Volvo V90. £34,555 is the starting price for the V90 D4. It’s currently available with a pair of 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder diesels. The D4 churns out 187bhp while you get 232bhp in the D5 which has allwheel-drive as standard. If you fancy a sporty look, head for the R-Design or if you want all bells and whistles, the Inscription trim will light your fire. All versions come with an 8-speed auto as standard. Performance from both engines is lively. The D4 reaches 60mph in a shade over 8 seconds while the beefier D5 shaves off a full second, although it feels quicker. Economy is excellent for such a big car. The V90 D4 Momentum for example will achieve around 62mph. Wow. It’s great to drive and safe as houses.

SEAT ATECA If you are looking for a small SUV, SEAT’s new Ateca is worthy of very close inspection. It’s brilliant to drive and brilliant to be driven around in. No prizes for guessing that SEAT takes a steer from its Volkswagen Tiguan stablemate. Granted, the interior quality isn’t quite up to the VW standards but it isn’t far off and, when you spot that the starting price for this decent sized family car is £17,990, the Ateca starts to look like terrific value for money. The entry level Ateca S comes with a 113bhp 1.0 litre petrol engine, If you prefer the 1.6TDi which will give you 65mpg, you’ll need to find another £2720. However, we’d recommend either the 1.4 petrol version or the 148bhp 2.0 litre diesel which will give you 55mpg, a top speed of 122mph and a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds. It’s a great all-rounder.

MINI COUNTRYMAN The new MINI Countryman has put on a few inches. This is good news because the previous model was a tad tight inside. Now, it rates as a really good family car. The Countryman is really a MINI estate with a bit of attitude. It falls into the mould of Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). If you enjoy driving and like a bit of fun, then you’ve come to the right place. Even though this is a sizable MINI, it still has the sort of grin factor that you’ll find in the 3-door hatch models. At the moment the engine range is limited to 1.5 and 2.0 litre petrol or 2.0 litre diesel. All are available with manual or auto ‘boxes. The range kicks off at £22,465 for the Cooper 1.5 or £24,425 for the Cooper 2.0D. Want 4-wheel drive? Add £1730. The 2.0 Cooper S starts at £26,350. The Cooper 2.0D is probably the best bet. You get decent acceleration (0-60 in 8.9 seconds) and good economy (65.7mpg). Build quality is excellent and, even though the MINI isn’t cheap to buy, it hangs onto its value like a limpet.

ASTON MARTIN DB11 This is the best GT currently available anywhere. Okay, a Porsche 911 may be quicker on the twisty stuff, but for 99% of the time, the Aston Martin DB11 will be much more satisfying to drive and live with especially if you get stuck in town traffic or intend to cover long distances in true GT - Grand Tourer - style. Power comes from a 5.2-litre twin-turbo 600bhp V12 engine. 0-60 takes under 4 seconds. Top speed is 200mph. As for economy, on a 250 mile journey we managed a reasonable 25mpg. Price? £154,900.

They have already won contracts for major companies such as Amco, leading financial institutions and retailers and are also exploring the possibility of setting up an office in Dubai but they are determined that their unique selling point of game changing service will not be compromised by such rapid growth. For them it’s all about laying the right foundations for growth, which is quite apt given their backgrounds in the construction industry. “We see our business as a building,” says director Kieran Gardiner. “If you want it to last you need to

build the right foundation and we have spent time doing that. Now we’re ready for the fantastic opportunities that are being offered.” Kieran knows all about laying the right foundations. He has a 40 year award winning career in the restoration and renovation industry at a senior level. His business partner and founder of the business, Terry Jerrom, also has over 30 years’ experience managing prestige renovation projects and the two have worked together many times in the past. “Terry is much more about the creative vision and the big picture,” says Kieran, “Whereas I am more measured and will be asking ‘how do we make that happen?’. It’s a good combination of skill sets and because we have worked together for so long, we trust and value each other’s opinion.” The background in restoration is an important part of the Solid Bond approach because it imbues the values of craftsmanship into the business. “I chose the name Solid Bond Solutions because that’s what the ethos of the company is all about, finding solutions,” explains Terry. “It sounds obvious but that level of customer service just didn’t really exist before in the construction business. We give all of our clients a clear breakdown of costs at the start, we work flexibly so we can deploy our work force when and where our client needs them, we deliver a high standard of work and we hit deadlines. Most of all though, it’s about giving honest, expert advice so the client can bring the project in on time and on budget. Our clients also have clients to report to, it’s our job to make sure they look good by doing the best possible job for them.” spring

Business

Our culture is very ‘can do’. It is our job to find the solutions to our clients’ problems This approach is like a breath of fresh air in an industry where there is often a culture of contractors quoting unrealistic prices and completion dates to win a contract and then revising these significantly once the job is underway. “We take a totally different approach,” says Kieran. “We do a full survey which highlights any issues and then we present this with the evidence and the costs. We work with the budget they have so we can advise them what is a priority and what can be left to another time. If they haven’t got the budget, we will work with them to look at where they can make savings. It’s about building trust.” “Our culture is very ‘can do’. It is our job to find the solutions to our clients’ problems,” adds Terry. The company has a team of 10 full time staff, mainly based at their Darlington head office but also at three other locations around the country. In addition, they have a large workforce of contractors who have been carefully vetted, many of whom they have worked with in the past. “We are continually sending them on training courses to ensure their qualifications are compliant

with the latest legislation,” explains Kieran. “It’s about investing in them as people. It’s part of putting the right foundations in place. ” Another reason for their dramatic success is their ability to think ‘out of the box’. “If there is a continual problem, we always ask ‘why does this keep happening?’ and look for a solution,” says Terry. “It can often be something quite minor which would save the cost of continually repairing it. It’s about giving the client an informed choice. ” This different perspective derives from years of experience. “It’s almost like a sixth sense,” says Terry. “Yes,” adds Kieran, “We have worked on old buildings for so many years now that it’s almost like the building speaks to you.” With this unrivalled expertise plus the company’s solid foundations, there is no doubt that Solid Bond has the building blocks in place to deliver a very successful future for both themselves and their clients. • www.solidbondsolutions.co.uk spring

What’s so extraordinary about Wynyard Park? YOU CAN TELL it’s going to be very different as soon as you arrive at the imposing entrance just off the A689. It’s just a couple of miles west of the A19 junction. But a world away from the ordinary. Drive in past the Concierge’s lodge and extraordinary possibilities unfold.

THE EXTRAORDINARY LOCATION You’ll find yourself amidst 885 acres of fabulous parkland which was until recently the preserve of nobility. Here we have reserved a small number of very special pockets of land to become exclusive communities of selfbuild homes. Made up of between 12 and 30 spacious plots, each of these developments has its own gated entrance and is landscaped to take advantage of the rolling, natural setting. You can become the proud owner of your own slice of rural England.

AN EXTRAORDINARY HOME The home of your dreams. If you can’t find the exact one in the property pages, individuality, quality, value for money – selfbuild gives you the opportunity to create the home of your dreams using the best materials and workmanship at much less than the price of buying the equivalent on the market. Traditional, contemporary, grand or eco-friendly – so long as the design and build is compatible with our Design Guide and the idyllic surroundings, you have the freedom to be as creative as you like.

EXTRAORDINARY PEACE OF MIND What’s it worth to enjoy a quiet and undisturbed lifestyle? You can relax in the knowledge that Wynyard Park’s exclusive concierge service provides a team of on-site professionals with mobile patrol and 24/7 CCTV monitoring. They will also take

delivery of your on-line orders and store them in the lodge. All part of the service.

EXTRAORDINARY BY NATURE Who doesn’t wish for a graceful home in a setting that brings you closer to the natural world? Wynyard Park is unique and extraordinary in being both a greenfield and a greenleaf development. Its encircling belt of rich woodland is on your doorstep with tracks for jogging, cycling or simply walking the dog. Here and there you’ll come across artworks on wildlife themes, most notably the sculptures of deer which once roamed in herds 400 strong.

AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFESTYLE The leafy self-build neighbourhoods will have a secluded, away-from-itall feel.

Residents will also enjoy easy access on foot, by car, bike or our new Shuttle Bus to the whole Park’s growing amenities. These include leisure, eating, medical facilities, a nursery and school. Wynyard Park is fast growing into a secure, sustainable settlement to live, work and relax, complete with shops, pub, restaurants and community hall. Although within easy drive to and from Tees Valley centres, here you will feel you’re in a different dimension. It’s more than a place to live. It’s your place for life. That’s what’s so extraordinary.

AN EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY Seldom does a country estate become available for building homes of distinction in the North East or any other region. This is truly a once in a generation opportunity. The first of the Selfbuild developments, Manorside, has sold out off plan and the latest releases are proving very popular. So there couldn’t be a better time to visit our Marketing Suite and discover an extraordinary future. Come and be inspired. Wynyard Park – a world away from the ordinary. f you feel you have outgrown your home, why not investigate some clever interior design solutions? One couple who wanted a more relaxed style of living did exactly this and we provided a host of innovative solutions to make the space flow more naturally and provide the family with an open area where they can socialise.

We provided a host of innovative solutions to make the space flow more naturally and provide the family with an open area where they can socialise The house initially had several different rooms including a dining room, conservatory, kitchen, utility and office. The clients wanted an open area which would be the hub of the house. We opened up the space by designing a media area/family area with a dining area and open plan kitchen with island, which created areas for social interaction. We also wanted to utilise as much light as possible and bring the outside in on nice days so we used bi-fold doors across the kitchen

area and a floor to ceiling glass box return at the dining room area to provide light and a harmonious link to the outdoors. The large amounts of natural light from the bi-fold doors and glass box allowed for a contrast so we designed a charcoal grey kitchen which incorporated white Corian worktops and white reflective tiles giving the kitchen a sleek, contemporary look. In the family area and dining area we used different shades of grey in different textures spring

as a back drop and then, to add warmth, we incorporated some beautiful burnt orange fabrics for an injection of colour. Lighting has been thought out cleverly by designing several circuits which gives the client total control on what atmosphere they wish to create in each space. • www.georgebond.tv ray@georgebond.tv 0191 281 77 99

world

I

love writing my column for La Di Da. Life seems to fly by so quickly so when I get the chance to sit down and write, it’s nice to come up for breath and reflect on what I have been doing and enjoying. March is a good month for me, it is my ‘birthday month’, which means I can celebrate the whole of March…that’s what birthdays are surely for? I have so much work on, but it’s important to find some play time inbetween. December was as busy as ever, an exciting event I organised for Glasgow Nissan with ‘Maddieness Events’ finally arrived after months of meticulous planning. The event was the launch of their new snazzy showroom. We had Nissan Le Mans ambassador and Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy attending and the food was prepared by TV presenter and Michelin starred chef Tom Kitchin. They both took to the stage in a live ‘Saturday Kitchen’ type cookery demo, including the omelette challenge. The event was a big success and we also raised £30,000 for Cash for Kids Mission Christmas with a live auction which included a car and one to one cooking experience with Tom Kitchin. The lead up of Christmas parties galore included a night at Wynyard Hall grand marquee with friends and lots of kisses under the mistletoe. I finally got to wear a beautiful backless Forever Unique navy and gold chain

dress I had been keeping in my wardrobe. My hair was beautifully styled by Reef salons at Wynyard and my make up by Emma J. I loved the whole look. Every year myself and volunteer lead group, Tickle the Taste buds in Middlesbrough, coordinate a big hamper and Christmas gift campaign supporting charities including Mind and Safe Families for Children. This will be my third year and using my big network of lovely friends, family and the support of AlphaGraphics who donate money towards the hampers and their staff and vans to deliver them, we delivered over 50 food hampers to feed disadvantaged and vulnerable families in Teesside for a month including some treats and luxuries, plus Christmas gifts all wrapped ready for Santa to deliver for over 150 children. I am so grateful for all the support and although it sounds a cliché, this is what Christmas is about, helping others in need spring

and making children happy. It certainly makes my son appreciate how lucky he is. I had booked the ‘Man Behind the Curtain’ for my husband for Christmas last April, so after nine months of waiting I was very much looking forward to sampling Michelin starred Michael O’Hare’s crazy concoctions. The décor is minimalist and quirky (including bright yellow loo roll) complete with lots of eclectic artwork and graffiti. The food was delicious, a nine course ‘blind’ tasting menu. A creative display of not only interesting flavours but also bringing pure ‘art to the plate’. The highlight for me was the dessert, the most delicious chocolate mousse covered in a potato infused custard, puffed rice and lavender sorbet. It was pure heaven. I experienced Brighton for the first time in February. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I loved it! I was street casting for an advert for Barker & Stonehouse and everyone was just so friendly. The brief was quirky and interesting people so Brighton certainly fit the brief. I stayed in a boutique hotel ‘The Artists Residence – an eccentric bunch of fun and friendly small hotels’ recommended by a school friend. It was a hidden gem, the rooms were cosy and unique and the food in the small restaurant was delightful. Half term seemed to arrive far too quickly. We were very lucky to have a trip to Dubai with some friends and the kids planned. We stayed at the ‘Atlantis’ and we had a great time. We crammed in so much including a trip to the new Legoland and kisses with dolphins. The weather was poor which didn’t really affect a pale skinned redhead like me, so I was happy to sit in the shade with a trashy book sipping mojitos. Until next time…

many places to choose from. The Botanist have a really unusual list that you can have fun making your way down and it has been a popular place since it opened. I also love my local bar YOLO for a cocktail or a nice glass of wine. I’m looking forward to the summer where they have a lovely outdoor terrace so you can sit and enjoy warmer evenings.

EAT For a special occasion I like a view over the city and the restaurant to go to for this is Six, located on the top floor of the BALTIC. Serving up seasonal menus and good quality food, for a steak this is definitely my favourite place to go! Sunday Lunch: My favourite place for Sunday lunch is The Blackbird in Ponteland. Sirloin beef with plenty of trimmings, you can’t beat it! And the best part is the dog can come too! It’s just a lovely place for the whole family. What’s new: A new Spanish restaurant has recently opened, The Tapas Revolution Newcastle serving up the famous small dishes. I love Spanish food and I have said for ages I wanted to find a good Spanish restaurant in town and now I have one. And not only is the food good but the ‘bebidas’ are good too! Whether you are looking for a good glass of Rioja or a cocktail, my favourite being the sparkling rose margarita, this place has some amazing drinks on the menu, even soft drinks aren’t just the usual Fanta orange but homemade juices. Tea and Cake: When I need afternoon tea I always venture to Arlo in Jesmond who have nailed a gluten free chocolate brownie! They have a huge selection of cakes to choose from for the 3 o clock girly gossip over tea and cake. They also have books and toys for kids and are very family friendly.

DRINK Since Carrie Bradshaw and her friends made cosmopolitans sexy we have all been searching for the perfect cocktail. If you are looking for a night of cocktails in the city well there are so

dresses that will suit for evening or glam. For daytime, one label I love is Perserverance London, who have a gorgeous off the shoulder white lace dress, which will definitely be a fab purchase for the summer! Shoes: I love love love Kurt Geiger. With decent prices and such a wide range I am never disappointed and can always find something. I recently bought the Britton heels in black with a metal cigarette gold heel, which look great with a dress or jeans and they are so comfortable. I did however have to track them down in London as they were sold out everywhere!

DANCE

SPA/BEAUTY

Aveika, a Japanese restaurant and late night bar in Newcastle, is great place to dance the night away. Be prepared for lots of glitz, glam and champers.

Ramside Hall is a 25 minute drive out of the city but has an amazing spa for a girly day trip. It has so much on offer - indoor pools, an outdoor pool, thermal suite with different steam rooms and saunas and luxurious treatment rooms where you get some divine treatments. I always choose a full body massage and at Ramside they never disappoint, especially within such relaxing surroundings.

SHOP The best place to shop for my daughter Ella in Newcastle is Fenwick’s as they have a great kids department with plenty of designer brands to choose from. A favourite of mine is the Spanish designer Mayoral who design gorgeous traditional Spanish clothes. I always find this is a great department where you can shop for girls and boys and find some nice pieces to add to their growing wardrobe. Fave place to find a dress for special occasion: Well every girl needs a hand to find a dress! Cruise have a great designer collection and the label Three Floor have some lovely

ESCAPE There’s not a better feeling than getting some well deserved sea air up on the Northumberland coast. Bamburgh, Beadnell, Craster or Seahouses all have so much to offer. Visit the Farne Islands, Holy Island, or take the dog for a long walk along the beach, it really is the perfect escape. And if you fancy staying the weekend www.cottagesinnorthumberland.co.uk have some great properties.

KIDS Whether it’s a day out to the coast, a castle, a park or tourist attraction the North East has so much to offer for kids. We have many places we love but we have recently visited Beamish Museum which I loved as a child and Ella does too. She loves the outdoors but that being mixed with lots of things to see and do, Beamish ticks all the boxes. An open air museum set in 1820’s 1900’s and 1940’s there is so much to do. Ella loves riding the trams, visiting the farm, the fairground and the old school and playing in the playground with the old toys. Beamish really is a top North East attraction and well worth a visit.
