POND PAVILLION GALLERY SPACE Studio: DSGN 201 Project: Pavillion Gallery for Laszlo Maholy-Nagy Artwork Location: Central Park, NYC, US Through analysis of Moholy-Nagy’s photomontage, The Eccentrics (1927), three themes are evident that reflect the Weimar Republic society at the time in history: concealment, interaction, and ascension. Using these themes, we were asked to design the Pond Pavillion Gallery Space in NYC to display Moholy-Nagy’s works inspired from a selected piece of his art work. We visited the potential site, and worked to create a project that not only preserved the artwork of this influential artist, but also the surrounding environment as well.

A GATEWAY TO A CHILD’S GLOBAL EXPERIENCE Studio: DSGN 301 Project: Children’s Airport Kiosk Design Location: Beijing Capital International Airport, China With our use of materials, and extensive research of the history and tradition of Chinese culture, we were able to create an airport kiosk program for children that will benefit not only the children, but also to the airport environment. Beijing Capital International airport showed a signicant relationship between the airport and the environment. This relationship was apparent through the architecture, materials, colors, and symbols. We wanted to make a global connection between the nations and display this abstractly with the connection of water and land.

HOME MODIFICATION Studio: DSGN 301 Project: Residential Design for Special Populations Location: Mehta Household, Floral Park, US Paired with a team of Graduate Occupational Therapy students, we were asked to modify the home of a person living with a disability so that they will be able to live as independantly as possible. Our client for this project was the Mehta family, who will be bringing their little cousin Raj from India to live with them here in New York. Raj is currently diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an X-linked progressive disorder that results in muscle degeneration, wasting, and weakness. Independent ambulation is eventually lost and Raj will become power wheelchair dependent. Through research of this disorder, we were able to fully understand how this would affect his life and what changes needed to be made to the Mehta home. After various studies we were able to find a way to make the 2 story house completely accessible to Raj as well as make it a home that brings the family closer together. Additions were made to the house, all which will enhance the family‘s quality of life.

04 THE HIVE: W2L

Studio: DSGN 302 Project: Wind Water Light Foundation Offices and Exhibition Center Location: 635 Madison Avenue, NYC, US W2L (Wind/Water/Light) Foundation, a non-profit organization that was formed recently in New York City, USA. Its pilot office is under lease negotiation with the building owner, 635 Madison Avenue, NYC. The organization engages in the promotion of sustainability for architects, interior designers, contractors, builders, students, and public by introducing and educating the importance of sustainability to the public through various methods. The idea for the bee-hive concept was looking to nature. Honey bees, like other social insects, show “division of labor whereby different workers specialize on different tasks. In some sense, the complexity of their society rivals that of our own. I applied this division of labor throughout the office space, with the administrative representing the queen bee and drones, and the industry representatives representing the field bees, who venture out to the field to collect pollen, and then bring it back to the hive.

WORKERS: Field Bees: Most populated bees, they gather nectar, pollen, and serve as connection between outside world and the colony. THE EXLPODED HIVE: For the exhibition space, my main design intent was to allow the visitors to have the experience as if they were walking into an exploded beehive. BEES & SUSTAINABILITY:

If the honey bee does not pollinate the crops, the crops do not grow and produce the food that gets harvested and brought to the store where we buy it and bring it home to feed ourselves and our families. In other words there is a direct connection between the bees pollinating the crops and our ability to provide food for our families.

ELLE BOUTIQUE Studio: DSGN 242 Project: ELLE Fashion Boutique Design Location: Canal Street, NYC, US Throughout the semester of Interior Design CAD III, we learned the fundamentals of Rhino, 3Ds MAX, as well as further developed our skills in AutoCAD and Photoshop. We were to design a fashion boutique in Manhattan and develop our own furniture pieces for the space. We used various programs to reach the final product, from the concept diagrams through to applying materials and adjusting lighting. We also developed a logo design for the Boutique, and that became the inspiration for the design elements throughout the space.

By using a mainstream media, reality TV, in the powerful corporate building 7World Trade Center, “UnCensored Expression” challenges the status quo with every episode viewed and visitor that enters this space. 17 graffiti artists from all over the world will battle one another to do what they do best: get their message across. This reality TV show is closely linked with the public, with the judging being driven by the public through social media. This space will be the artists’ homes for the duration of the season, until one winner is finally chosen after a series of challenges. The public is also engaged with interactive space where they can express themselves freely, as well as view the artist’s as they work on their pieces.

modate multigenerational families, while still minimizing the footprint. In this project, the SodaBIB product will be produced in this facility.

STEP 1

Gowanus, Brooklyn NY, serves as the headquarters for Project XEstir. It is the central point for the design and production of the SodaBIB roofing application. The headquarters will also serve as an educational center to inform the community on the progress of Project XEstir, as well as ways to reduce their consumption and waste. There will also be a small recycling center as well as community-run garden. These jobs will stimulate income for surrounding families, as well as make an effort to clean the environment, as well as the much polluted Gowanus Canal.

STEP 2

Once SodaBIB components are produced, they will be shipped from the site (utilizing the location on the Gowanus Canal) to the global locations, starting with Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Mumbai, India, where the housing crisis in these areas are highest. The SodaBIB will provide a start for roofing materials as well as clean drinking water. From there, the residents will use (and/or re-use) local materials to build the remainder of the houses. These houses will accomodate multigenerational families while minimizing the ecological impact.

Global Outreach of Project XEstir

The renovated site will be the headquarters of Project XEstir, which will house the production of the SodaBIB components, as well as the design team and administrative offices. This will also feature a gallery for the community to see how the final work is completed in the global locations. Plans for the future of the site will include a fully operated community garden as well as a recylcing & sorting center.

Scope / Outreach

PRODUCTION OF SODABIB COMPONENTS

The SodaBIB project was created in NYIT by professors ans students responding to the issues of the global housing crisis and plastic waste disposal. SodaBIB roofs offer an ecological, breathing roof, and are best deployed in developing countries or disaster relief zones where they mediate between rain, sun and overheating. These will be produced at Project XEstír. (sodaBIB.org)

SHIPMENT TO GLOBAL LOCATIONS

The SodaBIB components will be created, packaged and shipped from Brooklyn, utilizing the Gowanus Canal. These will be shipped to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and the Dharavi area of Mumbai, India. These two locations will serve as the starting point for the outreach of Project XEstír, but in the future will expand to Africa, South America, Cambodia, and other areas in great need.

FORMATION OF ROOFS Once the components arrive to their destinations, they will be distributed to families, where they will immediatly be able to use the water. Once all the bottles are used, they will be simply slid into the purlin attachments, then to be attached to form roofs. This system is designed to have as much labor as possible done on the ground, and it is simple enough for even children to help with the construction.

BETTER LIVING CONDITIONS Using local labor of the families and community members, as well as local materials found in abundance (perhaps waste material as well), the housing will be formed. These structures will be molded to fit the environment of the user, while giving them a sense of ownership and accomplishment, and ultimatley better the living conditions of these families.

Gowanus Canal: A legacy of serious environmental problems has beset the area from the time the canal arose from the local tidal wetlands and fresh water streams. In recent years, there has been a call once again for environmental cleanup.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND GRAPHIC DESIGN One of my favorite passions is photography. When I’m not behind the camera for design projects, thanks to many friends who have graciously allowed me to photograph them, as well as the most beautiful mother nature, I have collected some of my favorite images from over the past 5 years. I have also included some of my graphic design work I have done for friends as well as church organizations.

For the full collection, please visit www.wix.com/boricuadrado/photography.
