THE TASK – A SERIES OF

9 Matchboxes

All matchboxes must have the same size and dimension. The external part of each single matchbox must follow a general rule applied to all. Each matchbox has to have a special treatment for its “inside”.

9

MATCHBOXES

9 Spaces

9 Techniques

Each matchbox must be dedicated to one specific “space” chosen from George Perec’s Introduction in “Species of Spaces and other Pieces”. There are 52 spaces to choose from.

Each matchbox must be made using one of these techniques. 1. Paper cut outs 2. Leperollo/accordion 3. Collage 4. Strings 5. Sand 6. Objects 7. Partitions 8. Seeing through a peephole 9. Free 5

Preparation

Inspirationen in Blau – The series of LizzieLaLa matchboxes

Partitions – Enclosed space: Lego workers building partitions to enclose spaces. The pattern on the cover of the matchbox allows the viewer to conjure up different spaces, all within the one design.

8

Free – Space of a moment: The camera has captured the space of a moment a long time ago ...

10

Sand – Space: This is our beautiful Del, who loves four-wheel driving on the beaches of the scenic sand islands around us. The picture of the waves of sand is inspired by the coloured sands of nearby Rainbow Beach. The beach scene in the matchbox is inspired by the Gold Coast, which is also very local to us.

13

Collage – Three dimensional space: “Hello, my name is Alyce. The Mad Hatter is having a tea party soon.“

14

Strings – Watch this space: Stefano and Anne-sophie wanted us to try to make them cry.

(This is my best attempt even thought it goes totally against my normal style. My husband says this will make Stefano laugh, rather than cry.)

16

Objects/Fluxus– Lack of space: This is like my office. Lots of cool things but I am always running out of space.

18

Leperello/accordion– Wide open spaces: This series was inspired by a helicopter flight I took recently over the breathtakingly beautiful Great Barrier Reef. The island featured is Green Island.

Seeing through a peephole – Lost in space: This is dedicated to my husband, Brian, who loves space and sci-fi.

Paper Cut Outs – Staring into space: Sydney, my favourite city in Australia, looks spectacular by day and by night.

Acknowledgements My appreciation and gratitude go to our wonderfully brilliant Lecturers, Stefano Mirti and Anne-sophie Gauvin of Abadir Accademia di Design e Arti, for providing us with yet another fun, challenging, wild and exciting project, one that was more complex that anything we have done before. I was stretched by it. It was painful but the pleasure exceeded the pain.

“I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy,

My thanks also go to my good friend, Dr Kaye Remington, who started me on this whole crazy creative journey when I was a student of hers at the University of Technology Sydney. Kaye and I spent the most delightful afternoon in Sydney, in the Museum of Contemporary Art, overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge, discussing different angles of the project.

I’m telling you it’s going to be

Brian Phillips, your space idea was awesome.

worth it.”

My special thanks, as always, to Del Vidito, who patiently listens to me excitedly discussing the requirements for our assignments, as well as any other zany creative projects that I come up with. Del’s insights and feedback are invaluable, to say the least. If it wasn’t for Del, I think I would have driven the rest of the family mad by now.

I love the way Fran Prince, who lives on the other side of the world, is happy to advise and provide feedback. I greatly appreciate the love, support and strength that comes from our very special Design1o1 community. All this helps me grow and develop. KissKiss LoveLove
