CO-DESIGN CHALTON STREET MARKET Discovery how to use co-design to create social value to a local market
Design for Publics Service design | Product design CSM X Camden Council X the Living center Apr 2018 - Now London, UK
Co-design Chalton street market is a publics design project using co-design and service design methods to create three market stalls with a supported service. It aims to create social value for regenerating the Chalton Street market in collaboration with Camden council and the living center. The community stalls and Fruit&Veg stall could bring the community back to the street by providing opportunities of setting up personal business, getting work experience and they also create a platform to gather people and bring health life to somers town.
DISCOVER At the beginning of the project, duty holders, customers and market traders are the three main aspects we focused on. Those research results provided a general understand of the project and the context, which helps to set up the following research activities.
For duty holders, we set up two desk research meeting with the managers from the Camden council and living center to understand more about the insights and got a lot of information from some official documents. For customers and existing market , we used the methods of interview, shadowing and observation to understand their journal and behaviors. For the market aspect, we observed different kinds of markets in London and talked to businesses on the street to learn the general situation of local market and the relationship between market and businesses on the street.
Observation on market trader | Research on other markets Meeting with Camden council
Research workshop In the pop-up stalls on the street, we set up four games for understanding people’s needs, their dream market and the journey around the market. There was a great lack between the participants of “Spend it” and “dream market”. Most of the locals thought the “spend it” is more acceptable because it let people feel like they are shopping in a market. And the people who were willing to try out the “dream market” game were led by us and finally came out with some unexpected ideas.
Share&discover workshop By debriefing the results from pop-up stalls, we developed our games and fitted them into a share&discover workshop in the living center and on the street. Participants were asked to make their own boxes with choosing a persona, what they want on the market(with existing results as reference), time, market layout(linear, circular, village), the social value of the market and invited to some discussions about how to make them happen. In order to capture people from different background, we also did a similar workshop on the market.

Co-design workshop Using the six ideas, we set up at the Living Centre and on Chalton Street Market to co-design with the community and stakeholders. For inspiring participants, we created three design methods for people to explain their ideas visually.
In the co-design workshop, participants were invited to go through all the briefs we created and choose one that they would like to discover further. Based on the chosen brief and the related persona, participants were asked to try the design process with the tools: drawing on pictures, building kit and storyboard drawing. Co-design workshop In the co-design workshop, participants were asked to choose the idea they are interested, create a journey for the persona and build up their own ideas.
Debrief All the results were debriefed into a mind map, which leads to four selected concept that we are going to focus in the next sections.
Briefs/persona: From the debriefing section, we came up with six briefs and each brief has some corresponding persona, participants were asked to focus on one brief with one or two persona; Drawing on pictures: Participants could draw or write there ideas on the existing pictures(each brief has 3 options). The pictures could remain them about the street and inspire them; Building kit: Based on those ideas, participants could easily start building their stall with the building kit we create. The finished model also attracted people on the market to our workshop; Storyboard: the story drawing at the end help them finalize their ideas and capture the main touch points(some of the participants may need our help on the drawing).
Outcomes 20 models with drawings and storyboards were created in the workshop based on the six briefs.

Prototype and feedback workshop DEVELOP In order to gain user feedback of our design, we presented our draft ideas of the service, in&out stalls prototypes and fruit & veg stall to the communities and stakeholders in the living center and on the street.
By choosing the brief and corresponding to the ideas from the last workshop, we designed the service of the market with three ideas of the in&out stall. On the meanwhile, the proposal of fruit & veg stall is also created by the group. Service System group also came up with a draft website to explain the service, which includes online and offline user journey. Prototyping After the ideation we began to create different stall corresponding to our insights.

LIVE LIKE A SALMON Discovery how to family will look like in the future
Design for Discourse Speculative design CSM Jan - Jun 2019 London, UK
Live Like A Salmon is a speculative design project, which explores how family will look like if we all have children after 65 or later. Through a collection of products, this project pictures the details of family life in such future from the perspective of childrearing and elderly care. It proposes a new possibility of life-work balance, family relationship, and life circle.
Live Like A Salmon
Salmon spends their early life in rivers and then swim out to the ocean where they live their adult lives and gain most of their body mass. When they have matured, they return to the rivers to spawn. After spawning, most of them die and the salmon life cycles start over again. What if we all live like a salmon? We will focus more on chasing our career, interests, and dreams in our early years. We will have children in later life, after 65, and raise them to an adult. We will have more time breeding them, playing with them and educating them. After they grow up, we could leave and let them enjoy their life.
Storage eggs/sperms In the early time, we freeze our eggs or sperms and store them in the hospital for having children later. Salmon spends their early life in rivers and then swim out to the ocean where they live their adult lives and gain most of their body mass. When they have matured, they return to the rivers to spawn. After spawning, most of them die and the salmon life cycles start over again. What if we all live like a salmon?
Enjoy your wonderful life After that, we completely focus on our career, chase our dream and enjoy our life without wondering about work-family balance.
Register to have children When we get to 65 or later, we are almost retired and start to think about having a family with one or a few children. we are going to enable the eggs or sperms we stored before and register to have a baby with our partner(s) or on our own.
Deliver a baby The organization will match our eggs/ sperms and produce the baby in the artificial womb.
Give Birth After a few weeks of reproduction, we are able to collect the artificial womb from the organization and take it home with us. We are going to witness the growth of the baby and enjoy the pleasure of bringing life to the world without pain and pressure.
Raise During the growth of our children, raising them will be another enjoyable thing for us. By playing with them, we will be able to learn more about them, have fun with them, which make us younger and healthier. When we casually walk on the ‘Walker’, the conveyor track will be activated for children to run on it unlimited, which not only covers the shortage of our aging bodies but also creates more interaction between our children and us. We will have a lot of quality time together in their early life and later on, we will also be accompanied by them when we get older.
Educate When they are in the school age, communication will become the most important thing for our relationship with them. The larger generation gap might cause some misunderstanding but with the translator stick that can translate what you say to a way of saying that our children can understand. It will analysis what we mean and explain to our children in the language they use, and vice versa. Understanding from the perspective of each other, with the help of the translator, our communication will be more enjoyable, as well as our later life.
THE KNOW UNKNOWN
By dreamscaping, discover the possibility of social relationship and the future headsets.
Design for Discourse Product design | Speculative design Jan - Feb 2018 | London, UK
This project aims to discuss about the relationship between people and technology and I focused on the use of headset in social situation. Opposite to the focus others, my design intend to help people show their social intention and open up the communication possibility between people is public social situation.
From the observation and dreamscaping research, I found out that people is getting used to put on their head phone or use their mobile as a “mask when they are in public. Showing their unavailability is the main reason but people actually would like to have conversation with others. For defining the results from dreamscaping, I acted out the scenarios to discover the key reactions. Meanwhile, I was exploring a way of showing different status of people in those scenario.
The main process of developing the concept is finding a way to communicate people’s social intention with the shape, color and the movement of the headphone. Prototyping and testing were used for developing the iteration of the products.
When you decide to take down your headphone, it will set up like a necklace and ready to explore. When someone with the same condition walk by and be around you, the headphone will be activated to make ‘connection’ with others’.

A public interaction installation design to discover the problem of parenting in China
Design for Publics Interaction design | Concept design Mar - Jun 2017 Suzhou, China
This is a public interaction installation design. It aims to inquire the relationship between parents and children in China and experience how design could make influence on parenting problems. While children playing on the trampolines, the environment will be changed by their movements. The green balls will be inflated and “grow” from the trampolines to the seats around, which look like an invitation to their parents. It encourages parents to join the play and the grow of their children physically and mentally. This project is trying to interaction design to raise parent’s attention on their children and the social awareness of the importance of good parenting.

Project research were conducted in various community playgrounds in Suzhou. Through observation, shadowing and interviews, I was trying to understand the problem of parent-children relationship, their behaviors in urban public space and reasons behind that. Lack of time and energy after work cause th problem but the essential reason is that most of parents doesn’t realize the importance of involvement in parenting and way of doing it.
Trampoline and inflated ball are the main touch points in this interaction installation. By transforming the energy from the trampolines, the bouncy balls will be inflated layer by layer from the middle of the square to the seats around. The movement simulates the growth of planets and tries to exert a subtle influence on parents’ character. Instead of creating benefits to solve the problem directly, I was discovering more possibilities of how interaction design could improve human relation.

Our criminal plan is to use the lacking awareness for biological information today to organize a future financial crime.
According to research, there will be much possible Biological information being used in the future. Combing with current technology and social trend, we invented 4 criminal tools to steal and obtain information for future crime.
In the near future, cryptocurrency becomes the mainstream monetary and it’s widely used for daily payment and transfer. Bio-info is used as the most secure method of storage and pay.
We used ‘court sketch’ and ‘mockumentary’ to contextualize our concept. We imagined a criminal family which father collected bio-info in the 2010s and leave this criminal treasure for his daughter to commit the financial crime in the 2040s.

STAKEHOLDERS
Problem about number of employees in low tide and peak-hour is the hardest part of management. - Shop manager
"Quick pay" is popular in China but is it really fast? When we go the fashion retailer store, we still need to wait for a long time and go through all of these processes. This tedious system really affects shopping experience and raises my think about the evolution.
Hardware The hardware of this system focused more on the functionality than the appearance. It can satisfy the needs of scaning, moving the tag and unlocking.
Software The main function of the software is to provide the function of scaning so with the development of idea, the home page was simplifed to one main button with two secondary items.
The new payment system was demostrated by the funtion model that was made by 3D-printed support, bar-code scanner, magnet and motor. The prototye was controled by the Arduino, which can be ordered by the application on mobile phone. When tester finish the process of 'payment' and scan the bar-code by the scanner, the motor will drive the supportor down to the magnet and the locked will be unlocked manually with the help of magnet.
- Researchers recorded the screens during the tests and on the same time, paied attention on the experssion changes of the user and marked down for finding the problem of using.

Wood Aluminium alloy
The area showed in the photo is a garden between central building and science buildings. It was the place that people went through every day but few of them stopped and enjoyed the beauty of the garden. The main purpose of this design was make the space more attractive to students and staffs.
The process of refinement elevated the initial version of my design by considering about the scale, material and plan of the whole scene. The shape of the top was redesigned and the overall appearance looks smoother.
WOOD WAVE
Wood wave was specifically designed to be the subsequent outcome of the 'paper wave' lamp. Inspired by the rolling surf with rising sun, this lamp abstractly show the concept of adversity and hopes. Using the material of wood chip to demonstrate the flexibility of wave is another highlight of the design.

CONNECTION “A WAY OUT” “Find a way” is a rotational maze that is a part of the connection project. It’s activated by a rolling wood ball from the last installation and release a marble for launching the next part. The marble that placed on the top of the maze will fall into the maze and find its way out with the rotation of the maze. This installation was designed at the early stage of unit 1 and I was trying to communicate my status when I first come to the new environment. The marble in the maze is like me in this brand new place, struggled, discover and try to find a way out.

- The main idea of my design was using bamboo to create a curve and streamlined fence that could attractive people to lay on it. Material library is the place where visitors could touch and feel things so the concept was about the interaction between fence and people. The small scale prototype shows the basic shape of my design and the full-scale one demonstrates the function and scene of people laying on it.

FRISBEE JERSEY DESIGNS From 2015, I designed six ultimate frisbee jerseys for my college team, a pickup team for tournament and guangzhou ultimate frisbee club. Those projects gave me lots of experience on graphic design and helped me generate my own style on communication through design.
Thanks.
