Terence Blanchard and his quintet will be joined by the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra in a free performance of his A Tale of God’s Will (A Requiem for Katrina). Again, a rare opportunity to hear this Grammy-winning work performed live at Finney Chapel. In partnership with DANCECleveland, we are thrilled to bring the Dance Theatre of Harlem to Cleveland for the first time in nearly two decades. This groundbreaking dance troupe will be performing works by women — one of whom is our own Dianne McIntyre, a Northeast Ohio native and recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize and Doris Duke Artist Award. And last but not least, the SFJAZZ Collective, a musically virile group of some of the best jazz players today doing special takes on the music of Miles Davis.

Most importantly, these performances include master classes and workshops open to the public. Once you experience a close-up, I guarantee you will come back for more. Make sure you sign up for our email and Facebook notifications.
THEATRE NOV. 3 - 5 To Kill a Mockingbird
From the Buena Vista Social Club, the Omara Portuondo 85 Tour is making a grand sweep across the country and Northeast Ohio is fortunate to be one of the stops. It very well may be the last opportunity to see the 85-year-old-but-still-fiery legend with the last few surviving performers from the famous Havana night club.

APRIL 2 Jon Kimura Parker
José James, often referred to as a jazz vocalist for the hip-hop generation, makes his debut appearance in Northeast Ohio at Nighttown. We’re proud to be the first to present him here and know that he will be asked to return once audiences experience him live.

(A Requiem for Katrina)
From the beginning, Minneapolis native José James has drawn from disparate musical influences. NPR Music noted that “James skirts categories with ease, fitting in with current R&B innovators like Frank Ocean or Miguel, yet maintaining a strong awareness of a lineage that stretches from Ray Charles to Marvin Gaye to Lou Rawls to Maxwell.” While keeping his trademark soulful baritone at the forefront, James weaves elements of indie rock, folk, funk, blues, hip hop and R&B into an experience journeying from desire to introspection and spiritual epiphany. His fourth album, Love in a Time of Madness, is scheduled for a winter release and reflects hope for a new era of global connection in a time of social protest and documentation of brutality. James will be joined by band members Takeshi Ohbayashi (piano, keys), Kyle Miles (bass) and Joseph Grissett (drums).
Film director Spike Lee commissioned New Orleans native Terence Blanchard to compose the score for his 2006 HBO documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, which showed the agony of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Blanchard, with that project as his starting point, went on to record A Tale of God’s Will (A Requiem for Katrina), parts of which were heard in Lee’s documentary. The album was deeply personal. Blanchard’s mother, Wilhelmina, lost her Pontchartrain Park home in the tragedy.

In 2008, the album won a Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, and the song “Levees” was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Dance Theatre of Harlem In partnership with DANCECleveland
Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem was considered “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” (the New York Times, 1971). Shortly after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mitchell was inspired to start a school that would offer children in Harlem, the community in which he was born, the opportunity to learn about dance. Known for its thrilling performances, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi-cultural dance company that has achieved unprecedented success, bringing innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression to audiences in New York City, across the country and around the world.

“You can propose various definitions for what this band represents, but it’s a superbrain for what serious jazz sounds like now,” wrote The New York Times.
support also allows us to offer scholarships to our students in the Creative Arts Academy, students who otherwise would never have the chance to be involved with the arts.
The SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star jazz ensemble comprising eight of the finest performers/ composers at work today. Launched in 2004, the group convenes in San Francisco each spring for a multi-week residency. Throughout this extended rehearsal period, the octet workshops new repertoire and interacts with the Bay Area community through SFJAZZ educational programs. The Collective then performs in San Francisco before touring the country. This year the ensemble performs compositions by Miles Davis and new pieces by its members.
The community’s investment in this series has allowed our young students to experience the emotional power, intellectual stimulation and spiritual depth of classical music while also allowing music lovers of all ages to enjoy the unique artistic talents of our pianists.
Members include Miguel Zenón (alto saxophone), David Sanchez (tenor saxophone), Sean Jones (trumpet), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Warren Wolf (vibraphone), Edward Simon (piano), Matt Penman (bass) and Obed Calvaire (drums).

Your investment in the Classical Piano Series helps ensure the future of classical piano performance, music education and art education for many new, young artists, and it helps plant the seeds of art appreciation for the new generation to come. Thank you for continuing to support our efforts.

FREE American pianist Simone Dinnerstein is a searching and inventive artist who is motivated by a desire to find the musical core of every work she approaches. NPR reports, “She compels the listener to follow her in a journey of discovery filled with unscheduled detours... She’s actively listening to every note she plays, and the result is a wonderfully expressive interpretation.” The New York-based pianist gained an international following because of the remarkable success of her recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which she raised the funds to record. Released in 2007 on Telarc, it ranked No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in its first week of sales and was named to many “Best of 2007” lists including those of The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The New Yorker. Dinnerstein’s performance schedule has taken her around the world since her triumphant New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 2005 to venues including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Philharmonie, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and London’s Wigmore Hall Dinnerstein was the best-selling instrumentalist of 2011 on the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart and was included in NPR’s 2011 100 Favorite Songs from all genres. She was also among the top 10 best-selling artists of 2014 on the Billboard Classical Chart.

TRI-C PRESENTS 2016-2017 TRI- C JAZZFEST
LEGENDS WALL Cuyahoga Community College in June unveiled its new Tri-C JazzFest Legends Wall in the lobby of the Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts. The new installation celebrates the history of JazzFest and honors recipients of the Cleveland Music Legends Award for their contributions to American music.
CREATIVE ARTS A Tri-C Center of Excellence Diverse Degree and Certificate Offerings State-of-the-Art Facilities Faculty with Real-World Experience
With an unveiling that coincided with the 2016 JazzFest, the wall features two, large, interactive screens. Visitors and students can explore the 37-year history of JazzFest through photographs, videos, programs, posters and artist biographies.
216-987-3509 www.tri-c.edu/creative-arts
One key element of the displays is the photo slide show. Cleveland photographers Jeff Forman, Janet Macoska and Sheri Oliver culled hundreds of images from Tri-C’s archive and other collections. Photos of JazzFest headliners such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis and Oscar Peterson are accompanied by quotes drawn from DownBeat magazine interviews and provided by publisher and Northeast Ohio native Frank Alkyer.

216-987-6145 www.tri-c.edu/creative-arts-academy
The wall, which is 25 feet high, is broken into two main sections. The history section features several short videos narrated by key players in the evolution of JazzFest, including founder Dr. Thom Horning. The “Early Years” video explores the launch of JazzFest in 1980 and its early branding as “America’s premiere jazz education festival.” Additional videos showcasing artist residencies, Tri-C’s Jazz Studies program and community outreach, along with a complete archive of past programs and posters, round out the history section of the wall. The Cleveland Music Legends section features a slide show of award winners and video interviews with living legends – Jamey Haddad, Eddie Baccus, Sr., Kenny Davis, Sammy DeLeon, Evelyn Wright, Howie Smith and Vanessa Rubin. Highlights include anecdotes about Smith’s first saxophone lesson, DeLeon playing timbales with Tito Puente, and Haddad’s musical awakening: “When I heard A Love Supreme, I know I didn’t understand the whole thing, but I really felt like I was given permission to experience something that was inside of me, that I resonated with. From that point on … all I wanted to do was be a jazz musician.” Envisioned by Tri-C President Dr. Alex Johnson as a museum-quality display to “tell the history of JazzFest, which has brought more than 3,000 performers to Northeast Ohio and served more than 500,000 visitors, and honor those Clevelanders that have shaped American music,” the Tri-C JazzFest Legends Wall offers compelling insight into the backstory of how JazzFest became the region’s premiere jazz festival. – Paul Cox
