In this session, we will take these seven principles and apply them specifically to teaching in a community college setting. Cultivating Our Response to Student Writing Room: WLA B123 Mark Larsen, Adjunct Faculty, English, Western Campus Responding to student writing is serious business. Yet when our dinosaur brains interfere, we often dread it. Part of the problem is boundaries: What principles can drive us to approach our work constructively and provide techniques to guide our response? Nancy Sommers of Harvard University suggests an approach that sets the scene, engages students in a dialogue and manages the workload.

Teaching Naked: Stripped of PowerPoint Room: WLA B209 Wendy Hall, Adjunct Faculty, Speech Communications, Western Campus Many instructors have come to rely on PowerPoint to teach. As a result, many students have come to rely on PowerPoint for note-taking. When we take the PowerPoint away, students are lost. This will be a guided discussion to brainstorm and share ideas of how to create engaging learning environments that encourage active listening, critical thinking, and effective notetaking without relying on PowerPoint to guide us, and the students, through the process.

By reading portions of a shared book across multiple disciplines, students are able to examine common concepts through different lenses. This insightful learning experience is complemented by a number of cocurricular events and ready-to-use modules, lessons and assignments.

East Math Success Seminar Bonita Galosi, Adjunct Faculty, Mathematics, Eastern Campus Mirela Pashaj, Adjunct Faculty, Mathematics, Eastern Campus East Math Success Seminar (ZBMT-1033) is a mandatory addition to MATH-0910. Students learn various problem-solving methods and techniques to assist in independent homework completion. The seminar’s main focus is to clarify concepts and guide students through MATH-0910 assignments. Staff do not give out homework answers; rather, techniques for solving problems are modeled using problems similar to those found in online homework tool WebAssign.
