Dear Friends, On behalf of the people of our great city, I welcome you to Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, now celebrating its 40th anniversary as one of Cleveland’s cultural gems. Tri-C JazzFest has contributed significantly to our city’s vitality, uniting the community around music and attracting visitors from far and wide. What started as a two-day educational event on Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus has burgeoned into a year-round source for jazz performance and education that culminates in a summer destination weekend event. I am proud that our city hosts such a world-class festival. It is wonderful to see the festival celebrate Cleveland’s own jazz history this year with special tributes to music legends Tadd Dameron and Bobby Womack. I heartily congratulate Tri-C and the festival organizers not only for surviving 40 years, but also for dedicating themselves to such an important American art form. Special thanks to The George Gund Foundation for supporting the regional musicians on the outdoor Strassman Insurance Stage and to KeyBank for its fourth year as presenting sponsor. Enjoy the lineup, the theatres, the food and the fun in Cleveland!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the 40th annual Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, presented by KeyBank. As one of the longest-running and most prominent music festivals in Northeast Ohio, JazzFest has earned a special place in our community — and it just gets better every year. As we conclude our fourth decade with all this fun and excitement, it is important to recognize Tri-C JazzFest’s commitment to educating tomorrow’s musicians and artists. Through the College’s Creative Arts Center of Excellence, college and K-12 students have enjoyed a wealth of master classes, panel discussions and special concerts with industry professionals throughout the year. In 2019, area students had the chance to work with James Newton Howard, Patrick Bartley, Afro Blue, Allan Harris, Dominick Farinacci, Jeff Hamilton, Shenel Johns, Dave Stryker, Carol Welsman, the University of North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band and Terence Blanchard. More than 700 students from schools in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania participated in our Vocal Jazz Day and DownBeat Jazz Education Days held in February and April. Through JazzFest relationships with artists, we are able to present unique and memorable performances. In his final year as JazzFest artist-in-residence, trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard premiered OUR VOICES: DEMOCRACY RE:visited at the Maltz Center for the Performing Arts. This highly collaborative venture, supported by the Joyce Foundation and MAP Fund, involved the Tri-C JazzFest Academy’s Spirit of the Groove student ensemble, a gospel choir of local and student singers, CityMusic Cleveland and spoken word performances by local poets RA Washington and Orlando Watson. The work focused on the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and as it was a free event, aligned with the JazzFest mission to provide world-class music in the community. Over the past few years, JazzFest has evolved into a full-blown summer destination — one where visitors can enjoy an array of free concerts and outdoor activities, and immerse themselves in a diverse menu of indoor concerts. This year’s JazzFest ranges from the intimacy of a performance by Regina Carter to the no-holds-barred concert by Tower of Power. Celebrating Cleveland’s own history, we’ll have a tribute to Tadd Dameron by Dianne Reeves and John Clayton, as well as an old school soul tribute to Bobby Womack by Christian McBride. Both John and Christian were constant collaborators with Tommy LiPuma, and that is its own unique Cleveland connection. It is with great pleasure that I recognize the 2019 Cleveland Jazz Legends honorees: KeyBank Foundation Chair and CEO, Margot J. Copeland; Jazz Advocate Max Dehn; and pianist and Tri-C educator Joe Hunter. Year after year, JazzFest has received invaluable support from our partners and friends. I’d like to extend my gratitude to our presenting sponsor, KeyBank, along with Strassman Insurance Services, The George Gund Foundation, Fran and Jules Belkin, Char and Chuck Fowler, Kulas Foundation and United Airlines. We invite you to celebrate 40 years of the Tri-C JazzFest with a special gift by texting “JazzFest” to 52182. Your donation continues the 40 year tradition of providing educational opportunities for the entire community with local and international jazz artists throughout the year. Thank you for your support – Jazz Lives Here!

40 and Still Swinging!
Hitting 40 is a big deal, and a time to recognize how far we’ve come and who’s helped us along the way. One thing is certain: Cuyahoga Community College has sustained a nationally respected home for jazz, providing tens of thousands of area students with educational opportunities and hundreds of thousands of music lovers access to world-class jazz. For that I thank the college leaders whose commitment to the art form helped the festival flourish and grow. In honor of this auspicious anniversary, we’re celebrating Cleveland with tributes to our own Tadd Dameron and Bobby Womack. For Dameron, known for beautiful arrangements for Jimmie Lunceford, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan and Chet Baker, there is no better musical fit than John Clayton — one of Tommy LiPuma’s top shelf arrangers. John, along with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and Dianne Reeves, will give Dameron’s music what it deserves: unequivocal gold treatment. As for soul man and hit maker Bobby Womack, Christian McBride jumped at the chance to do this home town tribute, and his love of soul and R&B makes him the perfect director for it. Staying true to its educational mission for 40 years, JazzFest continues to enrich Cleveland’s jazz legacy. This year, with the support of The George Gund Foundation, we hosted a series featuring former Tri-C jazz students now enjoying successful music careers all over the country, aptly titled “Flying Home.” Dominick Farinacci plays a critical role as artistic director for Tri-C JazzFest Academy and Summer Camp, building bridges with area educators and discovering and mentoring new jazz talent. Without a doubt, we’re making jazz history every day at Tri-C. Congratulations to our 2019 Tri-C JazzFest Legends: Max Dehn had the vision and skill to raise funds and implement the preparatory Saturday Music Program — now a robust arts program that includes dance, strings and jazz; Joe Hunter, whose swinging piano style is known and respected by everyone from Cleveland to Columbus; and Margot Copeland who understands the cultural significance of jazz and brought KeyBank to JazzFest as its first presenting sponsor. Special thanks to our national advisory committee, Christian McBride, Patrick Rains and Jules Belkin. It is an honor to have you in our corner! Deep gratitude to Margot Copeland and KeyBank, Gina Vernaci and the staff at Playhouse Square, the JazzFest staff, our wonderful JazzFest volunteers and you — the members, pass holders and fans — for supporting this music. Terri Pontremoli Director, Tri-C JazzFest

Awards Jazz Legends
Margot J. Copeland | Chair and CEO, KeyBank Foundation
Margot Copeland grew up with an appreciation for community service, education and jazz (the first concert she attended at the age of eight was Duke Ellington). She has remained passionate about all three throughout her career. Copeland served as the executive vice president of corporate philanthropy and civic engagement for KeyBank, as well as the chair and CEO of the KeyBank Foundation, until her retirement in June. Throughout her tenure, she has led the company’s philanthropic investments in education, neighborhood prosperity, workforce development and community service. It was under Copeland’s leadership that KeyBank, already a supporter of Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, became the presenting sponsor, drawn by the festival’s role in the development of community engagement and jazz education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Hampton University and a Master of Arts in Educational Development from The Ohio State University. Copeland has received many distinguished awards and honors exemplifying her service and commitment to underserved communities. She travels the world attending jazz concerts and festivals, but Tri-C JazzFest remains her “not to miss” favorite.
Max Dehn | Jazz Advocate Cleveland native Max Dehn joined the Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland staff as artistic director and producer in 1989, bringing an abiding love for jazz and American music, and a commitment to the festival’s mission. As a curator, Dehn engaged international artists to perform in creative settings and developed many events showcasing the work of Northeast Ohio artists. Dehn understood the artistic and practical value of teaching music in the community. In 1991, he initiated the Excellence in Music Project, in collaboration with the Cleveland School of the Arts, Tri-C, and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He and JazzFest founder Thom Horning developed a college-level jazz studies and technology program at the Tri-C Metro Campus. The Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts is, in great part, a legacy of Dehn’s 12 years of leadership.

Joe Hunter | Pianist, Jazz Educator Growing up in a musical household, Cleveland Heights native Joe Hunter began playing piano when he was eight. His parents would take him to venerable Cleveland jazz venues to experience performances by some of the top musicians of the day. Hunter expanded his musical skills in jazz ensemble and orchestra at Cleveland Heights High School. At Cleveland State University, Hunter studied classical music, and as a student in Rio de Janeiro, his passion for Brazilian music was ignited. The rock world recognized Hunter’s keyboard mastery, and for a time he played with a local band, hoping to support, as he put it, his “jazz addiction.” Hunter has been playing music fulltime, as a solo artist and with various bands, since the late 1980s. In 1997, he began teaching jazz piano at Cuyahoga Community College, a faculty position he holds today.
Honorable Mention
Tadd Dameron (1917-1965)
Born in Cleveland, pianist Tadd Dameron (1917-1965) was a key national figure in the evolution of swing to bop and a significant and revered composer and arranger. Outside of his jazz peers, he lived a life of anonymity, his contributions largely unrecognized. But his compositions “If You Could See Me Now,” “Good Bait,” “Our Delight,” “Hot House,” and “Lady Bird” are staples in the jazz canon. He wrote arrangements for legendary artists such as Jimmie Lunceford, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Billie Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Chet Baker and Dizzy Gillespie, to name a few. Called “the romanticist” of the bop movement by Dexter Gordon, Dameron’s musical legacy was kept alive by Benny Golson, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson and Don Sickler. A definitive biography, Dameronia: The Life and Music of Tadd Dameron, was written by Paul Combs in 2014.
Bobby Womack (1944-2014)
Kevin Mazure Getty Images
The son of a Cleveland steelworker, Bobby Womack and his brothers formed their own gospel group at a young age. While on tour with the Soul Stirrers, Womack met Sam Cooke, and the two of them made the transition from sacred to secular music in California. In the 1960s, Womack recorded a string of hits and was a regular session guitarist in the Memphis scene. Wilson Pickett alone recorded 17 Womack compositions. From 1970 to 1990, Womack charted 36 singles including major R&B hits “That’s the Way I Feel About Cha,” “ Woman’s Gotta Have It,” and “If You Think You’re Lonely Now.” “I Wish He Didn’t Trust Me So Much,” and “(No Matter How High I Get) I’ll Still Be Looking Up to You” were hits in the 80’s. Womack can be heard on the Rolling Stones’ Dirty Work album, in a duet with Mick Jagger on “Strictly Memphis.” Nicknamed “The Preacher” and “The Poet,” he discovered and refined his identity as a soul man with deep roots in the church. Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

Tower of Power Thursday, June 27 7:45 p.m. | KeyBank State Theatre What is hip? JazzFest turning 40 and the iconic Tower of Power (T.O.P.) turning 50 at the same time! T.O.P.’s anniversary CD, Soul Side of Town, is a labor of love and the inauguration of a new affiliation with Mack Avenue Records. Along with all the hits, the audience will be treated to new songs. Most of the new material on Tower of Power’s Soul Side of Town are by the hit‑making team of Emilio Castillo (second-tenor sax) and Stephen “Doc” Kupka (baritone sax), who also hold down the world-famous five-man Tower of Power Horns. Along with the drums and bass lock of David Garibaldi and Marc Van Wagenungen, these veterans put on a show that longtime fans, music connoisseurs and a new generation will remember for years to come. Along with Castillo, Kupka, Garibaldi and Van Wagenungen, T.O.P. consists of guitarist Jerry Cortez, Hammond B3 organist/keyboardist Roger Smith, first-tenor saxophonist Tom Politzer, trumpeters Adolfo Acosta and Sal Cracchiolo, and vocalist Marcus Scott.
“T.O.P. showed yet again why it is such a lovable act, with funky, soulful, high energy music and fun-loving (and love-loving) lyrics and themes. This was a tour‑de‑force performance as always … captivating the listeners’ attention and demanding movement from even the most stoic non-dancer. To say that T.O.P. is “still going strong” would be an understatement verging on the criminal.” — Josh Sweigert, Tahoe Onstage

A Celebration of the Music of Tadd Dameron and Henry Mancini featuring Dianne Reeves, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Gerald Clayton and Dominick Farinacci Sponsored by the Balogh Brothers Friday, June 28
| 6 p.m. | Ohio Theatre
John Clayton excels as a composer, arranger, conductor, producer, educator and bassist. He has won a Grammy Award and eight Grammy nominations. A graduate of Indiana University, Clayton toured with the Monty Alexander Trio, the Count Basie Orchestra, and served as principal bassist with the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He co-founded the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, the Clayton Brothers quintet and taught bass at multiple universities. In addition to teaching residencies all over the world, Clayton has directed educational components associated with the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Centrum Festival and Vail Jazz Party. Career highlights include arranging the “Star Spangled Banner” for Whitney Houston’s performance at the 1990 Super Bowl; playing bass on Paul McCartney’s album Kisses on the Bottom; arranging and playing with Yo-Yo Ma & Friends on Songs of Joy & Peace; arranging, conducting and performing on the 2009 album Charles Aznavour & the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra; recording with Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Monty Alexander and many others; and working with Queen Latifah, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Gladys Knight.
Dianne Reeves is the preeminent jazz vocalist in the world today, with her arsenal of talents richly displayed on every song in her limitless repertoire. Her virtuosity, improvisational prowess and unique jazz and R&B stylings have earned Reeves five Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album, an honorary doctorate of music from Juilliard and designation as a National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master. Reeves’ magical, timeless voice, exceptional personality and the sheer force of her performance mark her as a captivating, world-class artist. Wynton Marsalis has praised her as “one of the most powerful, purposeful and accurate voices of this or any time.” Her Grammy-winning album, Beautiful Life, epitomizes the spirit of her storied and extraordinary career, traversing many genres and collaborating with a diverse collection of artists. Adored by audiences and critics alike throughout the world, Reeves is a natural wonder.

Béla Fleck & The Flecktones featuring Victor Wooten, Roy “Futureman” Wooten and Howard Levy/ John Scofield’s Combo 66 Friday, June 28 7:45 p.m. | KeyBank State Theatre Thirty years later, groundbreaking banjoist Béla Fleck has reconvened the extraordinary initial lineup of his combo, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones. Rocket Science marks the first recording by the Flecktones in almost two decades, with pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy back in the fold alongside Fleck, bassist Victor Wooten and percussionist/drumitarist Roy “Futureman” Wooten. Far from being a wistful trip back in time, the album sees the Grammy-winning quartet creating some of the most forward-thinking music of their long, storied career. While a mix of genres come into play — from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances — the result is a sound all its own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Simply put, it is The Flecktones, the music made only when these four individuals come together. Aside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar, John Scofield is a creative artist of an even rarer sort: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent, rock-solid aesthetic identity. Looking to commemorate his 66th year, Scofield penned 12 original compositions and formed a swinging new group to record and tour the music. Rising star Gerald Clayton was an obvious choice on piano, an instrument central to the new tunes. The connection between Scofield and drummer Bill Stewart strengthens as the decades pass. Stewart introduced bassist Vicente Archer to the project, having worked with him on a Nicholas Payton recording. Scofield is thrilled with Combo 66 and, in addition to the musical combustion, especially enjoys the group’s intergenerational quality.

Akiko/Hamilton/Dechter B-3 Trio Friday, June 28 10:15 p.m. | Allen Theatre Originality is what versatile drummer Jeff Hamilton brings to the groups he performs with and one of the reasons he is in constant demand. In addition to his work with Ray Brown and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Hamilton appears on nearly 200 recordings with artists such as Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Barbara Streisand, Mel Tormé, John Pizzarelli, Benny Carter, Lalo Schifrin, George Shearing, Clark Terry, Gene Harris, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Scott Hamilton, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Keely Smith, Bill Holman, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel and Mark Murphy. Accomplished guitarist, composer and arranger Graham Dechter plays with the kind of swinging authority and seasoned maturity that belies his years. The 28-year-old Los Angeles native, a member of the ClaytonHamilton Jazz Orchestra since he was 19, shows a deep reverence for the jazz guitar tradition in his warm-toned renditions of ballads, bossas, bebop and blues. A formidable soloist and consummate accompanist, he imbues standards with rare enthusiasm and an inherent bluesiness while carving out his own path with several affecting original compositions. Raised in Osaka, Japan, Akiko Tsuruga began studying the organ at age 3, at the famed Yamaha Music School. After discovering her passion for jazz very early on in her musical journey, she launched her career immediately upon graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living and playing in Osaka, Tsuruga had many opportunities to perform with world-renowned U.S. jazz musicians. After landing in New York City, the mecca for jazz, it didn’t take long for her to make her mark — she was soon embraced not only by audiences, but also by her fellow musicians, as one of the top organ players in the city. But it was organ legend Dr. Lonnie Smith who proved to have the greatest impact on her musical development and career. He became a mentor to Tsuruga, and she considers him her greatest influence.

Regina Carter and Xavier Davis/ Helen Sung and Michela Marino Lerman Saturday, June 29 1 p.m. | Ohio Theatre For Grammy-nominated artist Regina Carter, the violin isn’t simply an improvisational vehicle; it’s a passport to unexpected realms. Her quest for beauty, combined with her passion for excellence, did not escape the attention of the MacArthur Foundation, which awarded Carter their prestigious MacArthur fellowship “Genius Grant.” The acclaimed violinist was selected as the 2017 Showcase Artist for Monterey Jazz Festival and, in 2018, was appointed as director of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s All-Female Jazz Residency, a unique summer immersion program for aspiring women jazz professionals. Her duo with pianist Xavier Davis is a simpatico merging of two musical minds. Davis’ professional career as a jazz pianist took off when the legendary vocalist Betty Carter spotted his outstanding talent at the 1994 International Association of Jazz Educators convention in Boston while he performed with his college ensemble. She brought Davis to New York, hiring him exclusively as the pianist in her working trio. Today, Davis is one of the most accomplished jazz pianists worldwide. A prize-winning classical pianist before jazz intervened, pianist/composer Helen Sung captivates listeners with an imaginative, modern artistry that seamlessly integrates the jazz and classical worlds. She has worked with such jazz luminaries as Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Ron Carter, Jon Faddis, Wayne Shorter and Regina Carter. Sung will be joined by tap dancer Michela Marino Lerman, the only woman of her generation inducted as an honorary member of the Copasetics — an organization comprised of mostly male black tap dancers, founded in 1949. The Huffington Post has called her a “hurricane of rhythm,” and The New York Times has called her a “prodigy” and described her dancing as “flashes of brilliance.” She is a proud student of Buster Brown, Gregory Hines, Leroy Myers and Marion Coles. The floor that Michela Marino Lerman chooses above all others is O’Mara Sprung Floors which “...provides superior comfort, support and above all, sound!!” - Michela Marino Lerman

Dominick Farinacci’s “Rhapsody in Blue: Revisited”/ Matthew Whitaker Saturday, June 29 3:30 p.m. | Allen Theatre Trumpeter Dominick Farinacci presents his newly commissioned arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue,” George Gershwin’s groundbreaking masterwork from 1924. Farinacci built this interpretation around the cultural influences and events of both the time it premiered as well as today, featuring accordionist Julien Labro with a multigenerational and multicultural ensemble. Commissioned by the Catskill Jazz Factory, this piece debuted in New York City last summer. Farinacci and Labro will be joined on stage by Chris Pattishall (piano), Aidan Plank (bass), Gabe Jones (drums), Keita Ogawa (percussion), Jamey Haddad (percussion), Michela Marino Lerman (tap), Evelyn Wright (vocals) and Orlando Watson (spoken word). The floor that Michela Marino Lerman chooses above all others is O’Mara Sprung Floors which “...provides superior comfort, support and above all, sound!!” - Michela Marino Lerman
Eighteen-year-old pianist Matthew Whitaker grew up surrounded by music. Since winning the Apollo Theater’s amateur night at age 9, Whitaker has toured the world, played Carnegie Hall and become the youngest artist to be endorsed by Hammond in its 80+ year history. A prolific composer, he heads his own publishing company and names Dr. Lonnie Smith, Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea as artistic influences. In 2017, Whitaker was named one of the 17 people to watch in New Jersey by The Record, one of New Jersey’s largest newspapers; made Crain’s New York Business’ breakout list of 20 under 20 as a performing artist; and was named one of seven rising stars for 2018 by USA Today network’s 201 Magazine. Joining Whitaker on stage is Marcus Robinson (guitar), Karim Hutton (bass) and Isaiah Johnson (drums).

Tribute to Bobby Womack featuring Christian McBride with Avery Sunshine, Nona Hendryx and Nigel Hall Saturday, June 29
| 6 p.m. | Ohio Theatre
It’s not simply his abundant virtuosity that has made Christian McBride the most in-demand bassist of his generation. Bandleader and national jazz spokesman McBride consistently combines his deft musicianship with a showmanship that transforms his passion into infectious joy. Although he is known for jazz, McBride has a strong strain of funk and soul in his DNA, and he jumped at the chance to celebrate the music of Cleveland native Bobby Womack. Known for songs such as “I’m a Midnight Mover,” “California Dreamin’,” and “Breezin’,” Womack, a 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, was also known for his session work as a guitarist. McBride will be joined for this one-of-a-kind performance by special guest vocalists Avery Sunshine, Nona Hendryx and Nigel Hall and a slamming jump band featuring guitarist Woody Aplanalp, who performed with Womack in his day. Sunshine is a mercurial singer and composer who weds soul, gospel, jazz and R&B in a signature mix. She has worked everywhere from Broadway to the Democratic National Convention to the European club and festival scenes. Though she lives in Atlanta, Sunshine originates from Chester, Pennsylvania, where she began her musical vocation by singing and playing piano in church. She attended Spelman College in Atlanta, where she started her musical apprenticeship on the city’s R&B scene. One-third of the pop/soul act Labelle, Hendryx, by far and away, made the hippest solo records of any member of that group. After Labelle called it quits in 1976, Hendryx released her self-titled debut record — an amazingly strong amalgam of soul and hard rock. LaBelle reunited in 2007 and issued Back to Now on Verve in 2008. The reunion was the impetus for Hendryx to begin recording and touring as a solo artist again. Most recently, she collaborated with eclectic guitarist Gary Lucas for the 2017 album The World of Captain Beefheart, featuring new interpretations of the experimental rock icon’s music. Hall is, in many ways, an artist who needs no introduction. An in-demand sideman, he’s built a mighty foundation of funk over the years onstage and in the studio with collaborators including the Warren Haynes Band, Jon Cleary, Soulive, Oteil Burbridge and Roosevelt Collier, Ledisi, the Soul Rebels, Lettuce and countless others. Legions of fans are already in the know about Hall’s copious keyboard chops and powerful vocal style. Along with Aplanalp, the band includes Quincy Phillips (drums), Bobby Floyd (B3/keys), Scott McKee (trumpet), Chis Coles (tenor sax), Anthony Spicer (alto sax), Frank Walton (trumpet), Mark Mauldin (trombone), Dan Wilson (guitar) and Tasheka Washington, David Peake and Reagan Gray (backup vocals).

Along with maestros Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample and Bob James, Lorber is a groundbreaking Fender Rhodes pioneer. Having produced for everyone from Dave Koz to Kenny G, the Grammy-nominated pianist is now touring with acclaimed ensemble Jazz Funk Soul, featuring Everette Harp and Paul Jackson Jr. Harp’s soulful and trademark blend of jazz, R&B, funk and pop have made him a favorite among fans, fellow musicians and critics alike. His impressive career has allowed him to collaborate with everyone from Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross and Patti LaBelle to George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel and Kenny Loggins. Jackson Jr. is one of the most recorded guitarists in the world. His seven successful albums contain several top ten releases, including the Grammy-nominated “I Came to Play.” In 2014, Jackson contributed several tracks to the album Random Access Memories by Daft Punk, which garnered five Grammy Awards and was the No. 1 album in 104 countries. Jazz Brunch with Diego Figueiredo and Jeff Hamilton Sunday, June 30 Noon | Nighttown What’s the best way to end JazzFest? A special jazz brunch featuring Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Figueiredo is a new star of the guitar world. He has released 23 CDs, three DVDs, and has played in more than 60 countries around the world. He is the winner of important competitions including the Montreux Jazz Competition and the VISA Prize. Figueiredo displays tremendous technique and emotion, and makes new fans every time he takes the stage. Hamilton cites Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, “Philly Joe” Jones and Shelly Manne as influences. In 1974, he got his first big break playing with the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He then joined Lionel Hampton’s Band until 1975 when he, along with bassist John Clayton, became members of the Monty Alexander Trio. He attained a childhood goal in 1977 when he joined Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd, with whom he made several recordings. In 1978, Hamilton was offered the position vacated by Shelly Manne in the L.A. 4 with Ray Brown, Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida. From 1983 to 1987, Hamilton performed with Ella Fitzgerald, the Count Basie Orchestra, Rosemary Clooney and Monty Alexander. He began his association with the Ray Brown Trio in 1988 and left in March 1995 to concentrate on his own trio.

On Nov. 4, 2018, Terence Blanchard completed his three-year residency at Tri-C JazzFest with a mind-blowing performance of a commissioned work at the Maltz Performing Arts Center.
JAZZFEST ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE RECAP
TERENCE BLANCHARD
Tri-C JazzFest and the Tri-C Performing Arts Series presented the world premiere by Blanchard, titled OUR VOICES: DEMOCRACY RE:visited, which featured CityMusic Cleveland, Blanchard and his E-Collective, spoken word artists RA Washington and Orlando Watson, Tri-C JazzFest Academy’s Spirit of the Groove student ensemble, Dominick Farinacci, and a gospel choir.
The work focused on the 1965 Voting Rights Act and included messages by Martin Luther King Jr., Lyndon Johnson and Barack Obama. More than 700 people attended the free event, broadcast nationally this past February on NPR’s Jazz Night in America. “With gravity, Blanchard offered a stunning solo on ‘Amazing Grace.’ He spanned humility and exaltation, using slight echo and delay to drive home and refresh the tune’s spirituality. It was a perfect way to usher in OUR VOICES, Blanchard’s singular blend of music and poetry. Sparked by E-Collective guitarist Charles Altura, with lyrics by local poets RA Washington and Orlando Watson, and eerie, swirling choir ululations, the 15-minute piece powerfully blended anger and exultation.” —CARLO WOLFF, DOWNBEAT OUR VOICES: DEMOCRACY RE:visited received support from the Joyce Foundation and MAP Fund. With support from the Kulas Foundation, John P. Murphy Foundation and The Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation, Blanchard engaged in numerous projects, classes, performances and workshops with students in Tri-C’s Creative Arts programs. He worked with student film composers, participated in public discussions on social issues and incorporated Tri-C Recording Arts and Technology students on his latest album, Live, released in April 2018.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE 2019 STUDENT POSTER Zhasmina Danallova Visual Communication and Design student
Part of the JazzFest mission is to provide educational opportunities for students of all ages and in all walks of life. In 2014, we asked graphic design students at Tri-C to come up with unique designs for festival organizers to use as the official JazzFest poster. The project not only helped the students build their skills, but also their portfolio. It grew into a valued tradition. Today, Zhasmina Danailova becomes part of that tradition. Her design, featuring an illustration of a dancer enjoying music by Sax-O-Matic, one of JazzFest’s most popular street performing groups, marks the 40th annual festival. She created it under the guidance of faculty member Seong-Ae Mun. Danailova’s inspiration? A photo from last year’s festival. “Seong-Ae showed me a picture of the group, and I drew it,” she said. “I tried to incorporate movement and show a different perspective of JazzFest.” She really wanted to convey the outdoor experience of the festival. Her design does just that, with a moving quick-shot of Playhouse Square as the background. Danailova is grateful she had the opportunity to design a poster to represent the festival. “I actually designed five posters,” she said. “The one I submitted was me really stepping out of my comfort zone. I didn’t think it was going to be chosen.” Born and raised in Bulgaria, Danailova started attending Tri-C when she moved to the U.S. in 2012. “I couldn’t speak English at all and took language classes for the first two years,” she said. “I decided on Tri-C because of the transfer options.” Once she was finished with her language classes, she started taking graphic design courses. She was always an artistic person and thought she might like the program. It turns out she had a knack for it, and she’s been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA. She’ll graduate from Tri-C this fall with an Associate of Applied Business degree in Visual Communication and Design with a concentration in Graphic Design. Danailova plans to transfer to either Kent State University or the Cleveland Institute of Art to get her bachelor’s degree. She’s not sure what she wants to do after she completes her bachelor’s, but she knows she wants to work with creative people in the publication field.
