celebrating the arts that bring us together.
Whether on the page, on the screen, on the stage, or anywhere else, art brings life to life. KeyBank is grateful for the passion and creativity that inspire and enrich all our lives, and we’re proud to support the arts.
Thank you, Tri-C JazzFest and the 2023 performing artists, for making a difference.
On behalf of KeyBank, the presenting sponsor of the 2023 Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, I am pleased to welcome you to this exciting community festival — a 44 -year musical tradition!
At KeyBank, supporting our community’s arts, culture and traditions is a priority and a privilege. This is why we are proud to support Tri-C JazzFest’s rich history of featuring talented musicians across the jazz spectrum while providing world-class cultural arts and music education opportunities. The KeyBank team is dedicated to helping our neighbors and neighborhoods thrive.
This event is a great example of a vibrant and vital community gathering together in celebration of — and appreciation for — Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) student musicians, jazz greats and their families, friends and fans.

Best regards,
Trina Evans

Welcome to the City of Cleveland and the 44th annual Tri-C JazzFest. I am proud of the many world-class arts organizations in this city and the fact that on any given weekend, there is something artistically significant to explore. This weekend, Tri-C takes the lead with Herbie Hancock, Trombone Shorty, Angélique Kidjo, Christian McBride and many other luminaries.
Congratulations to the festival organizers for a tremendous lineup in its 44th season. In addition to the ticketed concerts in the beautiful theaters at Playhouse Square, all Clevelanders and visitors can enjoy free entertainment on the plaza from 3 p.m. to midnight.
Not every city has a jazz festival, and Cleveland is fortunate to have one that celebrates the breadth and depth of American music.
Enjoy the festival and have a great weekend in our city.
With gratitude,

Welcome to the 44th annual Tri-C JazzFest!
As the new president of Tri-C, I am proud to be affiliated with an event that presents such a broad spectrum of national and international artists in an extraordinary celebration of American music.
It is rare for a community college to have a jazz festival of this scope and caliber, to say nothing of one with a four-decade history. Tri-C could not produce this festival without the continued generosity of KeyBank, our presenting sponsor, as well as Fran and Jules Belkin, Strassman Insurance Services, the George Gund Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, the Roy Minoff Family Fund, Margaret W. Wong & Associates LLC and the William M. Weiss Foundation.
While I’m new to Cleveland, I’ve been here long enough to know that Tri-C JazzFest is a nationally respected organization that impacts students, local musicians and all segments of our community in meaningful ways.
Very special thanks to Playhouse Square for their counsel and partnership and to the Tri-C JazzFest staff and advisory board for all they do to maintain the reputation of this world-class event.
Whether you’re attending the free shows and activities outside on the plaza or the concerts in Playhouse Square’s elegant theaters, I know you will be blown away by the quality of the performances and the spirit of unity.
Enjoy!

Message From the Director
On behalf of the JazzFest team, welcome to the 44th edition of Tri-C JazzFest! This lineup includes everything — from a young artist like Samara Joy, in the midst of a meteoric rise, to the legendary, iconic Herbie Hancock. Add to it our “out of Africa” opening night with Angélique Kidjo and Richard Bona, the magnetic Christian McBride, Dominick Farinacci, Dan Wilson’s tribute to Stevie Wonder, drum legend Steve Smith, artist-in-residence Braxton Cook and contemporary jazz greats Gerald Albright and Norman Brown — and you have a festival that covers a gamut of styles with a lot of heart.
In addition to the concerts in the theaters at Playhouse Square, we hope you’ll take advantage of the free outdoor concerts on the Strassman Insurance Stage, showcasing some of the best bands in Northeast Ohio, and the William M. Weiss Foundation Next Gen Stage, featuring students and alumni from Tri-C jazz programs. If you’re a foodie, check out the cooking demos in the Jazz Kitchen throughout the weekend. The chefs are graduates of Tri-C’s Hospitality Management Center who now run their own establishments, and the souschefs are jazz musicians. It’s highly entertaining, and the audience gets to sample the food.
The festival weekend is a huge collaborative effort. There are so many people to thank: Megan O’Bryan and the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation staff; Jenny Febbo and the Integrated Communications department staff; artist- in-residence Braxton Cook; Tri-C JazzFest Academy artistic director Dominick Farinacci; Kendra Willis and the Tri-C JazzFest volunteers; the donors, sponsors and pass holders; and the JazzFest Board of Advisors.
As I’ve said in the past, it all miraculously comes together as soon as the first note gets played! Celebrate this beautiful, expressive art form with us!

Janet Macoska Jazz Advocacy
For several decades, photographer Janet Macoska has preserved magical moments between the artists onstage and their appreciative audiences at Tri-C JazzFest.
While we love Macoska for her jazz photos, her work is world-renowned in rock ‘n’ roll. In 2003, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum presented her work in a major exhibit, It’s ALWAYS Rock and Roll, which later toured the United States, Canada and Europe. Her photos are in the permanent collections of the Rock Hall, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles and Hard Rock properties across the globe. In 2010, Macoska worked with the local designers at Vocon to combine music elements and edgy graphics for a mural in the main lobby of the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for the Creative Arts.
During the two years of the pandemic, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport featured a 43-piece exhibit of her work, entitled Long Live Rock, keeping Cleveland’s connection to rock ‘n’ roll music and history foremost in the minds and hearts of travelers. David Bowie, Dolly Parton, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, the Kinks and Hall & Oates are just some of the artists who have used her work in their books and on their album covers. Macoska’s photography has been published in Rolling Stone, People, US Weekly, Vogue, American Photo, The New York Times, The London Times and more.
Mark Mauldin Jazz Education and Performance
Mark Mauldin is an outstanding music educator in the Cleveland area. He has taught in the Woodridge, Hudson, Rocky River and East Cleveland school districts and is currently Solon City Schools’ director of bands. Mauldin also served as the coordinator of the Music Education department at Howard University for 11 years. Students in every public school where he taught instrumental music have become professional jazz musicians.
Throughout his career as an educator, Mauldin has maintained a robust schedule as a performer. Known as a versatile trombonist, arranger and composer, he performs regularly with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band, Sammy DeLeon y su Orquesta, the Jazz Heritage Orchestra, the Skatch Anderssen Orchestra and more. His outstanding musicianship has earned him opportunities to perform at Tri-C JazzFest in all-star bands with John Clayton, Christian McBride and Maria Schneider. Many local school bands and big bands have performed his compositions and arrangements. His piece “Water Bearer” is a favorite closer for many local bands.
Each year, the Tri-C JazzFest Legends Award is presented to Northeast Ohio individuals and organizations who demonstrate outstanding achievement in jazz performance, education, advocacy or philanthropy.
Evan Morse Jazz Advocacy
Dr. Evan Morse grew up in Richmond, Virginia, the son of a domestic worker and a barber who stressed the importance of education.
One day, when he heard the sounds of Gene Ammons and Sonny Rollins coming from the shoeshine parlor next to his father’s barbershop, he asked, “What is this music? Where can I hear more?”
Morse’s neighbor was a jazz bassist who kept records spinning day and night. When Morse heard Charlie Parker playing “Ornithology,” he decided to become an alto saxophonist. He joined his junior high school band under the direction of bandmaster Joe Kennedy Jr., a jazz violinist who arranged for and played with Ahmad Jamal, George Shearing and Benny Carter.
Morse earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee University and established the Warrensville Animal Center, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Throughout his career, however, his love of jazz never waned. In 1987, Larry Simpson, Ph.D. — then president of the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society — tapped Morse to be his successor, marking the dawn of an enormously prosperous era for jazz music in Northeast Ohio.
Within the first two years of Morse’s leadership, he created an advisory board of prominent civic leaders for the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society. He also secured funding from the Cleveland Foundation, the George Gund Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council and several others. He won Northern Ohio Live’s Award of Achievement, the Beck Center for the Arts Jazz Happening award and contributed two chapters on jazz artists to the book Black Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia
Char and Chuck Fowler
The Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation
As community leaders, Char and Chuck Fowler have nourished our students through philanthropy. Their contributions to Tri-C actively advance access to the arts, ensure wraparound services and promote student success.
For over a decade, the Fowlers have supported Tri-C JazzFest through generous contributions and outreach. Their commitment has ensured that jazz remains accessible and prominent to a diverse audience in the heart of Cleveland. JazzFest evokes happy memories of how the Fowlers became acquainted with Cleveland. As they drove around when they first arrived in the city, their radio auto scanner kept returning to a jazz station. Falling in love with the music, they started visiting local jazz establishments to hear new artists and attended Tri-C JazzFest every year.
The Fowlers were instrumental in creating the Food Pantry on Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus, a safe and holistic space that supports thousands of students and their families. They support numerous arts and nonprofit organizations throughout Northeast Ohio. Char has served on many boards that promote the arts in the community, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland International Film Festival, the BorderLight Fringe Festival and the Near West Theatre.
The Fowlers and their family are dedicated to ensuring that Northeast Ohio is an inclusive and prosperous community for everyone. We are honored to recognize Char and Chuck Fowler as 2023 JazzFest Legends.

“Kidjo’s voice is constant, an instrument of such power and clarity that it sounds equally capable of polishing glass or announcing Judgment Day.” — The New Yorker
Five-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo is one of today’s greatest artists in international music. Known as “Africa’s premier diva,” she was named one of 2021’s 100 Most Influential People by Time for her striking voice, stage presence and fluency in multiple cultures and languages.
Kidjo has been included in the BBC’s 50 Most Iconic Figures, and The Guardian named her one of the Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World in 2011. Ranked first on the Forbes list of Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa, she has cross-pollinated the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk and jazz, as well as European and Latin American influences.
As an ambassador for UNICEF and Oxfam, Kidjo travels the world advocating for children. In 2019, President Emmanuel Macron of France named her spokesperson for the Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa initiative, which helps close the financing gap for women entrepreneurs in Africa. Her own charitable foundation Batonga is dedicated to supporting the education of young African girls. Her band includes Dominic James (guitar), Michael Olatuja (bass guitar), Magatte Sow (percussion), and Edgardo “Yayo” Serko (drums).
“Imagine an artist with Jaco Pastorious’ virtuosity, George Benson’s vocal fluidity, João Gilberto’s sense of song and harmony, all mixed up with African culture. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you Richard Bona!” — The Los Angeles Times
Grammy winner Richard Bona is one of the world’s most accomplished bass players, composers and multi-instrumentalists. He has toured, composed and recorded with Herbie Hancock, Harry Belafonte, Steps Ahead, Quincy Jones, Chick Corea, Buena Vista Social Club, Cesária Évora, Sting, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Stevie Wonder, Bobby McFerrin, Chucho Valdés, George Benson, Oumou Sangaré and many more.
The Cameroon-born musician’s unique sound and vocal gift represent his African origins, addressing the continent’s traditions, culture, beauty and issues. His purpose and method of connecting with his audience have made him a staple of world, jazz and Afropop music.
Bona has taught jazz improvisation at New York University and continues to mentor young talent throughout the world. He’s also a TED speaker and an ambassador for various nonprofit projects.
Christian McBride/ Samara Joy
Friday, June 23
5 p.m.
Mimi Ohio Theatre Playhouse Square
Christian McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at The Juilliard School and was promptly recruited by saxophonist Bobby Watson, leading to a decade’s worth of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians.
His longest-running project, the Christian McBride Band (CMB), was formed in 2000. Praised by writer Alan Leeds as “one of the most intoxicating, least predictable bands on the scene today,” the CMB — saxophonist Ron Blake, keyboardist Geoffrey Keezer and drummer Terreon Gully — is built on a framework of experience and powered by unfettered creativity.
McBride focused his energy through a more traditional lens with the 2009 debut of his Inside Straight quintet and the Christian McBride Big Band, whose 2012 release The Good Feeling won a Grammy for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album. McBride later added the role of mentor, tapping pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. for the Christian McBride Trio’s Grammy-nominated album Out Here.
A respected educator and advocate, McBride was named the artistic director of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions (2000), co-director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem (2005) and creative chair for jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association (2005). He now serves as the artistic advisor for jazz programming at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and as the artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival.
McBride hosts and produces The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian on SiriusXM and Jazz Night in America, a collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center that showcases live jazz from across the country. His staggering body of work and gift for storytelling help bridge the gap between artist, music and audience.
From jazz to R&B, pop/rock to hip-hop, and neo-soul to classical, McBride is a luminary with one hand ever reaching for new heights — and the other extended in fellowship. His band includes Nicole Glover (saxophone), Ely Perlman (guitar), Mike King (piano) and Savannah Harris (drums).
Awarded a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2023, vocalist Samara Joy also won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019. Since then, she has appeared on The Today Show and released several viral video performances. With more than 200,000 TikTok followers, Joy is introducing jazz to a whole new generation. Her musical lineage stretches back to her paternal grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, who performed with Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes, and runs through her father, Antonio McLendon, a singer, songwriter and producer who toured with gospel artist Andraé Crouch. Her band includes Evan Sherman (drums), Miguel Migliore (bass) and Luther Allison (piano).
Norman Brown/ Gerald Albright
Margot James Copeland
Smooth Jazz Night
Friday, June 23
7:30 p.m.
Connor Palace Playhouse Square
“A culmination of Jimi Hendrix and George Benson, with some Wes Montgomery thrown in.” — JazzTimes
The joy that emanates from guitarist Norman Brown is palpable — the guitar is simply an extension of the man. A musician’s musician, he has collaborated with George Benson, Brian McKnight, Kirk Whalum, Miki Howard, Jeff Lorber, Gerald Albright, Rick Braun, Chanté Moore, Peabo Bryson and many more over the past three decades. Brown’s many accolades include a Grammy Award and a Soul Train Music Award. His bandmates include: Louis Newsom (drums), Hamilton Hardin (keys), and Nathanial Kearney, Jr. (bass).
Grammy-nominated jazz artist Gerald Albright has established himself as the consummate session and touring musician on both saxophone and bass. The Los Angeles native has worked with Anita Baker, Ray Parker Jr., Atlantic Starr, the Temptations, Maurice White, Les McCann, Teena Marie, Patrice Rushen, the Winans, Phil Collins and Whitney Houston.
“Top to bottom,” Albright says. “Whether in concert, listening to my music over the radio or CD player, I always want my listeners to be taken on a musical journey with different textures, rhythms, chord progressions and moods.”
Albright has also appeared on many television programs, such as A Different World, and numerous jazz segments for Black Entertainment Television. He was one of 10 saxophonists to perform at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton. In September 2021, Albright received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Joseph R. Biden. His band includes Collin Clauson (keyboards), James Roberson (drums) and Cory Baker (bass).

Friday, June 23 | 10 p.m.
Allen Theatre | Playhouse Square
Grammy-nominated guitarist and Akron native Dan Wilson attributes his artistry to Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Joe Pass and George Benson. He played with the late Joey DeFrancesco for several years before meeting bassist Christian McBride and touring with his Tip City trio.
Trumpeter and vocalist Jennifer Hartswick will join Wilson for a tribute to legend Stevie Wonder. Hartswick has performed with Herbie Hancock, Phish, Christian McBride, Tom Petty, Aaron Neville, Carlos Santana, the Rolling Stones, Big Gigantic, Dave Matthews and countless others. Included in the band are David Throckmorton (drums), Brandon Rose (bass), Phillip Jones (keys), and vocalists Alexis Lombre, Jessica Yafanaro and Hamilton Hardin.
Dominick Farinacci and Triad/ Braxton Cook
Saturday, June 24
2 p.m.
Mimi Ohio Theatre Playhouse Square
Trumpeter and Cleveland Arts Prize recipient Dominick Farinacci is an alumnus of The Juilliard School’s first jazz program. At 17, he opened for Wynton Marsalis and his big band at Tri-C JazzFest. Marsalis later invited him to New York City to perform on a live PBS broadcast, Live From Lincoln Center: A Tribute to Louis Armstrong, with Trombone Shorty and Brandon Lee. Farinacci’s newest group, Triad — created with Christian Tamburr, Michael Ward-Bergeman and Patrick Graney — weaves together the diverse realms of jazz, blues, orchestral and world music.
Emmy winner Braxton Cook (2023 Tri-C JazzFest artist-in-residence) is one of his generation’s most exciting voices. Not only does he exhibit world-class virtuosity on the alto saxophone, but he is also a uniquely talented vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer who blends jazz, soul and alternative R&B into a sound all his own.
Cook studied saxophone under world-class educator Paul Carr. By 18, he had made a name for himself, leading his own band at venues throughout the Washington D.C. area. While at The Juilliard School, he met trumpeter Christian Scott and became a long-term member of his band. He also toured and performed with Christian McBride, Jon Batiste, Marquis Hill and others.
He released his debut EP Sketch in 2014 and launched his solo career in 2015 with Braxton Cook Meets Butcher Brown. Cook’s first full-length album Somewhere in Between, released in 2017, amassed millions of streams and downloads on Spotify and Apple Music. No Doubt debuted at No. 2 on the iTunes Jazz Charts in 2018, while 2020’s Fire Sign garnered over 1 million streams in just a few weeks.
The FADER magazine named Cook a Jazz Marvel and Jazz Prodigy in 2017, and he was one of Ebony magazine’s Top 5 Jazz Artists to Watch in 2018. Outside the jazz sphere, he has worked alongside Rihanna, Solange Knowles and Phony Ppl and was featured on Tom Misch’s 2018 U.S. tour. His band includes Andrew Renfroe (guitar), Taber Gable (piano), Joshua Crumbly (bass) and Curtis Nowosad (drums).
Steve Smith and Vital Information:
Steve Smith (drums), Manuel Valera (keys) and Janek Gwizdala (bass)
Saturday, June 24 | 5 p.m.
Allen Theatre | Playhouse Square
Vital Information is a jazz fusion group led by critically acclaimed drummer Steve Smith. Appearing on recordings that have sold over 100 million copies worldwide, Smith has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz and rock, including Journey, Bryan Adams, Mariah Carey, Zucchero and Jean-Luc Ponty. Modern Drummer magazine named him one of their Top 25 Drummers of All Time in 2001. Vital Information celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
Herbie Hancock
Saturday, June 24
7 p.m.
Connor Palace Playhouse Square
“New material was mixed in with warhorse favorites, but, as with all Hancock gigs, you were never quite sure where things were heading. The band’s personality and solo strength played their part. But mostly the sense of discovery was due to the new angles Hancock continues to find and the way he pushes his band to the edge.” — Financial Times
Now in the sixth decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: at the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. This legendary pianist and composer has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960s.
A member of the groundbreaking Miles Davis Quintet, Hancock developed new approaches to his recordings. His recordbreaking 1973 album Head Hunters combines electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music, while 1983’s Future Shock marked his foray into electronic dance sounds. Hancock continued to work in an acoustic setting with the V.S.O.P. Quintet featuring ex-bandmates Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.
He received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for 2007’s River: The Joni Letters and two for 2010’s The Imagine Project. Many of his compositions, including “Cantaloupe Island,” “Maiden Voyage,” “Watermelon Man” and “Chameleon,” are modern standards.
Hancock serves as creative chair for jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and as chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. He is a founder of the International Committee of Artists for Peace and received the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres from former French Prime Minister François Fillon.
In 2011, Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. He received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2013 and was awarded a Charles Eliot Norton Professorship in Poetry at Harvard University in 2014. His memoir, Herbie Hancock: Possibilities, was published by Viking that same year, and he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. His band includes Lionel Loueke (guitar), James Genus (bass), and Jaylen Petinaud (drums).
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
Presented by The Roy Minoff Family Fund
Saturday, June 24
9:30 p.m.
Connor Palace Playhouse Square
Born Troy Andrews, Trombone Shorty got his start (and nickname) earlier than most. At 4, he made his first appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, performing with Bo Diddley. At 6, he was leading his own brass band. While still in his teens, he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band assembled for his Electric Church World Tour.
But Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player. Catch a gig, open The New York Times or Vanity Fair, or flip on any late-night TV show, and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma — a natural-born showman who can command an audience with the best of them.
Since 2010, he’s released four chart-topping studio albums; toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, Zhu, Zac Brown, Normani, Ringo Starr and countless others; and played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Newport Jazz and nearly every other major festival.
He’s performed four times at the Grammy Awards, five times at the White House, on dozens of TV shows and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honored with his own Muppet. He launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation in 2011 to support youth music education, and he received the prestigious Caldecott Honor in 2016 for his first children’s book, Trombone Shorty
In New Orleans, Shorty leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness; hosts the annual Voodoo Threauxdown, which has drawn guests such as Usher, Nick Jonas, Dierks Bentley, Andra Day and Leon Bridges to sit in with his band; and has taken over Jazz Fest’s hallowed final set, which has seen him close out the internationally renowned gathering after performances by the likes of Neil Young, the Black Keys and Kings of Leon. Trombone Shorty’s band includes Pete Murano (guitar), David Raymond Jr. (bass guitar), Joshua Connelly (guitar), Dan Oestrichier (bari sax), Bernard Jackson (tenor sax), Tracci Lee (vocals), Nell Simmons (vocals), Brandon Butler (piano), Alvin Ford Jr. (drums), Robert Peebles (drums).

SANDERS/SHORTER SURROUND SOUND EXHIBIT
Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24 | 3 - 9 p.m.
Allen Theatre Lobby
This year, the jazz world lost two titans — saxophonists Wayne Shorter and Pharoah Sanders. Through a special exhibition in the Allen Theatre lobby, Tri-C JazzFest attendees can experience some of their prime recordings through immersive surround sound, powered by Déjà Vu.
This sound exhibit is free and open to the public during festival hours on Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24, from 3-9 p.m.
Déjà Vu is the brainchild of Clevelander Frank Foti, founder, chief developer and CEO of Syndicate of Sounds. A pioneer in broadcast audio processing and engineering for the last 40 years, Foti has won numerous awards, including the prestigious NAB Engineering Achievement Award. He is also the executive chairman and majority owner of Telos Alliance, a worldwide leader in audio solutions for all forms of broadcasting. Learn more about Foti and Déjà Vu technology at SyndicateOfSounds.com.
Sax-O-Matic
Sax-O-Matic was formed in the summer of 2000 for the Rimouski International Jazz Festival as a street band. Their unique and humoristic approach was an instant hit. Hailing from Quebec, the four saxophone players (Alain Baril, Sebastien Grenier, David Parker, Joel Thibaud) of Sax- O-Matic are full of surprises. The concept for Sax-O-Matic is based around four rather undisciplined characters, who under the guise of being refrigerator repair men blunder their way through one wacky scenario after another that is guaranteed to surprise, embarrass, and make people smile as they back up their antics with some pretty groovy playing. You will see them playing all over the festival this weekend.
Wrapping it up at the Lafayette
For JazzFest 2023, Robin VanLear premiers her new ensemble of puppets and dancers inspired by the 1974 collage, Wrapping it up at the Lafayette, by American artist, Romare Bearden (1912 - 1988).
Robin created her first giant puppet in homage to Romare’s collage in 1993, and a recent residency at Karamu House enabled her to create the full ensemble of four puppets premiering at JazzFest 2023.
Harlem’s Lafayette Theater was the first nonsegregated major theater in the United States, famous for its musical revues. Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Ella Fitzgerald played there. Romare’s father, Howard Bearden, who was a pianist at the theater, hosted many late-night jam sessions at his home after the
shows. Jazz influenced Romare’s life and his artistic technique. His collage style emanated directly from the spirit of improvisation in jazz. He liked the freedom of selecting from photos, pieces of fabric, magazine images, and paint to build his artwork. Bearden was also a musician. His most well-known composition, Sea Breeze, was a hit for Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie.
In creating these four new signature puppets, Robin used the technique of collage to create the surface of the dancers’ hands and heads. The forms were also influenced by the slightly abstracted, geometric shapes of the pieces of paper used to define them in the art work.

Carlos Jones has been entertaining audiences for over 35 years, first as a member of the reggae group I-Tal and then with the legendary First Light before pursuing a solo career with his current group, the Peace, Love, Unity Syndicate (aka “The P.L.U.S. Band”). The group brings a brand of high-energy reggae to its shows.
Thomas Schinabeck
Thomas Schinabeck is an alumnus of the Tri-C JazzFest Academy and attends the Peabody Institute, studying with the likes of Sean Jones and Quincy Phillips. The band will play Schinabeck’s original compositions with some of the best musicians in Cleveland and his peers at Peabody.
Cleveland Jazz Orchestra
The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra (CJO) has been Northeast Ohio’s premier jazz voice since 1985. Led by awardwinning composer and trombonist Paul Ferguson, the CJO presents “the best jazz you’ve ever heard and the best jazz you’ve never heard.”
The Strassman Insurance Stage features performances by local and regional bands June 23-24. From jazz and Latin to funk and pop, the free performances are sure to keep the dance floor hopping. InsuranceServices
Da Land Brass Band
The Da Land Brass Band was formed in 2016 under the leadership of William C. Washington, Kyle Sherepita, Nathan Hestley and Liam Smith. This versatile band features a modern take on New Orleans street bands with high-energy funk.
Tommy Lehman

He has played professionally in Northeast Ohio for the last 10 years, regularly recording and touring with Nathan-Paul Davis, Chris Coles, Nine Lives Project, Bassel and Dan Wilson. He released an EP entitled “Uplift,” which features a quartet with SmokeFace, Gabe Jones and Andru Senpai.
Nathan-Paul & The Admirables
The Admirables are a funky soul band based in Akron. The raw energy of the Admirables is a force to be reckoned with. Frontman Nathan-Paul Davis engages the audience with his vocals like a Baptist preacher in a packed church, encouraging the crowd to get up and dance until they drop. “It’s a big soul party, and everybody’s welcome, so come as you are!”
Becky Boyd and the Groove Train
Becky Boyd has been playing the Cleveland club scene for over 40 years. Her vocals are outstanding, combining great tone with tremendous feel.
“Becky Boyd…possesses a powerful blues/jazz voice that’s forceful, sensuous and as clear as spring water.”
— Steve Byrne, Scene Magazine
“Becky Boyd is a local pro who makes the magic happen.”
— Harmonica Blue, Strange Brew Magazine
Becky Boyd & The Groove Train consists of Boyd on vocals, Jim Wall on drums, Alfredo Guerrieri on bass and Chris Hanna on keyboards.
Sammy DeLeon y su Orquesta
Sammy de León is one of the most recognized Latin bandleaders in Northern Ohio. He plays the timbales, a twin set of metal-encased, single-headed drums with a cowbell and cymbal on the side. He began to play professionally at 13 and has since played alongside greats such as Tito Puente and El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.
For the past decade, he has fronted Sammy DeLeon y su Orquesta, which plays a broad spectrum of dance music styles and has sustained a multicultural audience.

A Year of
JAZZ EDUCATION IN REVIEW: 2022-2023
Education is central to our mission at Tri-C JazzFest, and we are thrilled to engage area students with seasoned artists. Our activities bring great joy to all segments of the community while nurturing the art form of jazz. In addition to clinics and workshops with visiting artists throughout the year, Tri-C JazzFest supports the Tri-C JazzFest Academy, the Tri-C JazzFest Summer Camp and the DownBeat Invitational.
STUDENT PERFORMANCES:
Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz Ensemble ........................... July 30, 2022
DownBeat Education Days ....................................... Apr. 18-20, 2023
Tri-C JazzFest Summer Camp June 12-24, 2023
DOWNBEAT EDUCATION DAYS
Through three days of adjudicated performances and workshops at Metro Campus, Tri-C JazzFest reached over 160 middle and high school students from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Teaching artists included Braxton Cook, Dominick Farinacci, bassist Bryan Thomas, pianist Grant Heineman, drummer Zaire Darden and saxophonist Dave Sterner. The student ensembles were critiqued and coached after their performances, engaged in rhythm section and improvisation sessions, and participated in interactive concerts with the artists.
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES
This summer, the students from Tri-C JazzFest Academy’s Spirit of the Groove ensemble will work on a special recording and songwriting project with Tri-C JazzFest artist-in-residence Braxton Cook. This weeklong experience will focus on music composition and production as they write, orchestrate and record original songs. The students will also learn about copyright and registering original music.
Thanks to the Char and Chuck FOWLER Family Foundation, Kulas Foundation and Fox Foundation for making these extraordinary events possible. }
