Welcome to the Faculty of Creative Industries The Faculty brings together the many creative disciplines at the University of South Wales. Our taught courses, research and collaborative partnerships cover a wide range of subjects that reflect the creative economy. The creative industries move fast, with more content being produced and consumed than ever before, resulting in new techniques, technologies and environments which inspire new ideas and ways of working. Our undergraduate courses are designed to challenge and engage you with the creative and practical skills that will enable you to innovate with new ideas and operate professionally within the industry. These are organised within our Schools of ‘Art and Design’, ‘Drama and Music’ and ‘Media’, and are delivered in specialist centres at our campuses in Cardiff, Newport, Caerleon and Treforest. We continually strive to ensure that our courses remain relevant and our graduates are prepared to engage successfully with this major global sector to build their own careers. This includes offering our students the opportunity during their course to have significant work experience and to work in cross-disciplinary teams on ‘live’ projects with industry. For example, in production teams for a film project that includes

scriptwriters, actors, film makers, sound and post-production. In addition to learning the skills of collaboration and teamwork, these activities enable you to gain distinctive experience and develop valuable skills such as entrepreneurship, employability and an understanding of how the industry works – all of which puts you a step ahead when you graduate. This brochure includes a host of courses for you to choose from. Some have been established for a number of years, others are quite new. Some titles sound similar to each other, but each course within a discipline takes a distinct and specific approach. When choosing a course, please investigate all of the information available, particularly on our website and at Open Days, and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions – we are here to help you make the best decision. Gill Sandford Dean

Locations The University of South Wales offers creative industries courses at four different campuses, located across south-east Wales. These handy guides will give you a brief introduction to the exciting locations at which you will study:

6

Cardiff

Newport

Our Cardiff Campus is based right at the heart of the city centre in Wales’ capital city, and has all the facilities and sightseeing attractions you would expect from a major European city, including the Wales Millennium Centre and Cardiff Castle. The city is home to a thriving music and arts scene, with venues including the Motorpoint Arena, St David’s Hall, the New Theatre, and Chapter Arts Centre. A thriving media hub, Cardiff is the base for a number of local and national radio stations and publishers, while the new BBC Wales Drama Village in Cardiff Bay means that world-famous shows like Dr Who and Casualty are regularly filmed and produced here. Cardiff is a sports-mad city, home to the 75,000 seat Millennium Stadium, but also to Premiership football team Cardiff City, Cardiff Blues Rugby and a number of other major sporting teams and venues. A green and cosmopolitan city, Cardiff is a major shopping destination, with the £750m St David’s development including a number of major household names.

City Campus, is in the heart of Newport city centre. On the banks of the River Usk, it is adjacent to the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre, and student accommodation, and is opposite many of the new developments in Newport’s current regeneration programme. The city has a strong industrial history, and is now home to major employers such as Gocompare-online.com, the Office for National Statistics and the Patent Office. There are also a number of small and medium-size industries, particularly in the creative industries. Newport might be a small city but it has lots of brilliant attractions, and including a vibrant student scene, and fabulous sports facilities, including one of only five Velodromes in the UK and the Celtic Manor Resort, home to the Ryder Cup in 2010. In addition, the recently redeveloped Rodney Parade on the banks of the river opposite the City Campus is home to rugby team Newport Gwent Dragons and Newport County FC.

Caerleon

Treforest

Our Caerleon Campus is located in the small, picturesque village of Caerleon just a few miles from Newport and served by excellent transport routes. It’s a real contrast from the city centre, and it’s where the majority of our student accommodation is – so you can get the best of both worlds if you choose to live in Caerleon, but study or socialise in the city.

Treforest is a compact campus with a friendly, close-knit atmosphere. Twenty minutes from Cardiff and surrounded by green rolling hills, Treforest draws students from all over the world. The campus has mostly modern buildings, but the beautifully restored Tŷ Crawshay, home to the University’s Law School, is a reminder of its proud past. Everything you need is right here on campus, from cafes, a shop, sport centre, health centre, bookshop and Chaplaincy, to a shiny new Students’ Union and Halls of Residence.

Once home to thousands of Roman soldiers and horsemen, the village still retains a Roman amphitheatre amongst other relics. For such a small village there are also a large number of pubs, together with lovely cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which have outdoor seating. There’s also a vibrant arts scene in Caerleon, including an arts festival and outdoor theatre every summer.

Fashion Marketing and Retail Design BA (Hons)

It is essential that brands connect with their customers across a variety of channels. They need to offer a choice of shopping experiences that allow the customer to access products when, where and how it is convenient for them. This specialist, industry-focused course is for those who wish to pursue a career in creating concepts for fashion retailing environments. Your studies will examine consumer behaviour and the way fashion retail products are presented and marketed. This centres on the idea of omni-channel distribution; a new wave of retailing that responds to the demands and lifestyle of an increasingly sophisticated 21st century consumer. There is no other course in the UK that focuses on the design of these customer touch points. By concentrating purely on fashion retailing, this course emphasises the unique characteristics of the fashion market. This makes it different from other retail-related awards, because it considers fit, adoption of trends, and identity. You will be set live briefs, which are projects that replicate the workplace and involve working closely with external organisations, helping to develop the skills that you will need to work successfully in the creative industries. Work experience is an important part of this course, and previous students have gained placements with a number of high-profile fashion retailers, including Browns, Urban Outfitters, Monsoon/Accessorize, Diesel and John Lewis. During the course you will also have an opportunity to travel to cities known for their cutting-edge approach to fashion and retail, such as London and New York.

Tuition Fees and Scholarships Paying for tuition is a significant part of the cost of going to university, but there is financial support available to help you get the education you need. Below are some frequently asked questions that will help you understand the funding options at the University of South Wales. What fees will the University of South Wales charge in 2014-15?

I normally live in Wales – how much will I pay?

The University will charge £9,000 per year for full-time Honours degrees in areas where the cost of provision is high, eg, science, technology, engineering and maths. All other full-time Honours degrees will be £8,250 per year. Students studying a full-time Foundation Degree or HND will be charged £6,750 per year.

Most full-time students who normally live in Wales prior to study, will only have to pay £3,575 per year in tuition fees themselves, irrespective of the university fee level.* This can be paid by taking out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company. The remaining fee will be paid by the Welsh Government on behalf of eligible students through the Tuition Fee Grant. This grant is not means-tested and does not have to be repaid. Please note that the Welsh Government will decide whether you are eligible for this grant when you apply for student support.

Why do fees for full-time Honours degrees differ? It costs the University more money to provide technical courses than classroom-based courses. The technical equipment needed to teach students specialist skills requires continued investment to ensure that it is suitable and up-to-date. The University is a registered charity and not a profit-making organisation, so the cost charged is reflective of the specialist equipment required.

Do I have to pay fees up front? The good news is that no eligible student has to pay fees up front. If you take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, the loan money is paid directly to the University on your behalf. 100

I normally live elsewhere in the UK – how much will I pay? Full-time students from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will need to meet their tuition fees in full. In most cases, this can be done by taking out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company. If you have to pay your tuition fees in full and you live further than 45 miles from the University, we offer an exceptional bursary that will help with your first year’s accommodation in Halls.

I normally live outside of the EU – how much will I pay?

Scholarships

Full-time students from outside the EU are normally classified as international students for fee paying purposes. The University will charge £11,300 for fulltime undergraduate Honours degrees for international students enrolling in September 2014.

At the University of South Wales, we are committed to achieving excellence in all that we do – and this extends to helping our students progress to their full potential. Here are details of the scholarships we have available for our students:

Research

International

The Faculty of Creative Industries promotes a vibrant, cross-disciplinary research culture that provides a supportive environment for all researchers.

The University has an established international reputation, welcoming nearly 4,000 overseas students to the University every year, from more than 60 countries.

This research underpins teaching and learning throughout the Faculty, and we engage with the wider academic community, industry and business.

At the Faculty of Creative Industries, our dynamic courses and great student experience mean that more and more international students are joining us every year, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are very active in visiting many different regions each year and meeting students in their home countries, providing advice and information to those who are interested in joining us, as well as establishing partnerships with institutions across the world.

During the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), 75% of the research submitted by academic staff in the Faculty* was graded as international or world-leading standard. We offer a flexible approach that allows students to move fluidly between different modes of research, working across established disciplines within the Faculty and outside, and in so doing, forming new paradigms for research in the creative industries. For more information about our research, visit: www.southwales.ac.uk/research *The RAE assessment was based on research submissions by the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries as part of the University of Glamorgan.

Students have a chance to spend a year abroad, studying at one of our partner universities in the USA, Canada, Australia or Mexico, to gain valuable experience.

For detailed information on the services that the University offers our international students, please visit our main international website: www.southwales.ac.uk/international Our Enquiries & Admissions Unit has been awarded the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2008 accreditation following an independent quality management audit of processes and practice. Certification relates specifically to handling student enquiries and applications to study at the University.
