tripartite
tripartie
The challenge of an unknown site is the infinite possibilities for the space. With a empty plaza situated in a mysterious urban context, the project is to create a pavillion-type museum over a landscape of ancient ruins. Tripartite is a cascading concrete structure that rises up to reveal the corner edge of the existing postal office building as a gesture to anchor the pavillion onto the site. The north and south wings of the museum enclose the existing large plaza to create an informal gathering space. The arches frame imaginary views from the interior as well as act as gate for the plaza from the street edge.

With the selection of the structural supports becoming the preliminary conceptual idea, the selection of the cycloid vault is used to both support a large span over the ruins and to divide the museum into a series of elongated rooms. To fade in controlled light for the artifacts, the zenith of the arches are split to transmit light into baffles that continue to direct light down the sides of the arches. 5

| PRODUCTIVE ARCHIVE | As a city museum, the locale should act as a city-making hub where visitors have free access to the history and research being done on the city. The workshops, studios, and classrooms are enmeshed into a single space to activiate ideas for the city so the space acts as a forum.
10
What is the role of a museum when the museum is part of the very thing it is documenting? This paradox is what generates the conceptual idea for the Exploratory, where the museum has the task of not only capturing and documenting the spirit and complexity of the urban fabric at many different scales, but also must have an active role in the cities narrative. The introduction of city-making programs integrates these workshops, studios, meeting rooms, and classrooms in a 6-storey, 25,000 square metre productive archive for citizens to use as both research lab and as an exhibit of the current city of Toronto and its history. The two brick massings that house the productive archives derives its exterior qualities from the designated heritage buildings on the site. These archives are the drivers of the museum and within each mass, the archives act as striations that are broken up by two interlocking ramps that slips and slides within them creating intimate and distance relationship between the objects and the viewer.

| URBAN LANDSCAPE | The Toronto City Museum and Exploratory is made up of three buildings: The Observation tower, the Archive and The Viewing Pavillion. The observation tower has a camera obscura that constantly records and feeds information to the archive.

| ATRIUM AND RAIN GARDEN | The atrium directs filtered light into the archival and gallery spaces and offers a break from the density of the archives. On the east side of the site is a rain garden and bioretention pond that act as a natural axis to future rail deck park and provides a lush separation and acoustic barrier for the draper street residents as well as referencing the old shoreline and the marshland that existed before Lake Ontario was infilled.

| DISCOVERY RAMP | Each ramp offers a unique experience: the silver ramp is the innovation ramp and the grey ramp is the discovery ramp. The discovery ramp winds through the archive and gallery spaces and the innovation ramp climbs through the fishtank and workshop areas to see how the artifacts are made and restored.

Following a previous project, the architecture candidates were teamed with landscape architecture students to continue developing an urban design proposal for the City Place. The new proposal, Air Rights, creates a diverse public realm by incorporating for families and lower income people and connecting the rail deck park to the larger flyway network of Toronto. nature education centre

The project continues to mitigate the vernacular high-rise condomoniums with bridging residential buildings suspended over rail deck park. As an exploration of the relationship between public and private space, the bridging buildings visually separates the park into sections and provides eyes on the park for safety. The proposal began by identifying key east-west street corridors and transitioning them into future commercial, market, and green characters. Then landscape and pedestrian connections were created then to link these new corridors for a
walkable neighbourhood. 21

The Lost Villages was a series of villages that were submerged under St. Lawrence River in a large scale damming event in order to widen the passages for nautical transportation. With seven villages sunken and their stories along with them, the only remnants are ten rescued buildings that sit on a re-purposed park off of a highway. Faced with the problem of a dislocated site for a new museum housing artifacts from the past, the urge to connect the park back to the river in the museum provided the preliminary inspiration for the project. The museum is a 200 m loop that ramps up into a pier over the water. The pier becomes a launching port for visitors to sail to the locations of the water relics of the musem. Formally, the building acts as a linear measuring device to mark the displacement of narratives as well as the displacement of the village. As the visitor traverses through the exhibition spaces, there are portals to reveal the older buildings and the surrounding river landscape.

#iseeyou? Do you see me? Peek through the windows to see somebody new or a different view. Or lie down and and take a break to watch people’s feet meander by. Inspired by the idea of a periscope, #iseeyou is a public installation that provides both seating and play for the Robson Square. The project is a series of interlocking periscopes that wrap create various types of gathering spaces from one to twenty people. Each window connects to another mysterious window and leads to an unexpected perspective. The complex form evokes a curiousity in both children and adults to interact with the installation to find the window they were gazing through. The window can be to another friend looking back, yourself or bring one eye to eye with a stranger.

| VARIED SEATING | The installation aggregates the periscopes together to create small to large seating areas. Each window aligns with the busking areas and bustling thoroughfare of Robson Street.

| MATERIALS AND TEXTURE | The work/live design is very public at the front end and on the ground floor yet private on the upper floors. The concrete ties into the material palette of the alley but is softened for residential housing by a wood imprint. The permeable paving visually connects the green areas in the alley with the homes.

Laneway housing is an initiative to allow building in backyards and gardens facing the back alley. To address the issue of affordable housing in Vancouver, laneway homes are slowly becoming the norm. The project imagines the possibility of populating the alleys with microhousing.

of a small laneway house in a shaded parking spot. Sited on the north of two parking lots in the alley between Robson and Alberni St., the vertical site conditions inspired a laneway home balancing between the light and dark and the public and private extremities. The tale of Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole arose from staring down at the darkened site from the top of adjacent vertical walls. The design extends a hole to create a light well from the roof to the floor below. During the day, light brightens the bedroom and workspace and at night, the shadows create a warm hearth in the kitchen and living spaces. The staircase spirals down from the walls. The bathtub projected into the centre of the home where Alice can float in her bathroom, perpetually falling. 45

|SECTION AND EXPLODED MODEL | The bathtub is unconventionally suspended between the floors. Derived from the inspiration of Alice falling down the rabbit hole, users are indefinitely suspended with a view up through the skylight.

The Acadia Apartments are located in Strathcona, one of Vancouver’s oldest residential neighbourhoods. Their primary heritage value lies in their relative rarity as apartment buildings within a single family residential housing context, and significantly, their existence as rental housing, which speaks to what would have been their historic role in providing affordable accommodation for new residents and small families. The continued provision of that use appears key to the buildings’ historic role and operation in the neighbourhood.

As a west coast native, I’m fascinated with the ambivalent relationship between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. My work focuses on the integration of architecture, landscape, and urbanism, especially, in the tracings and re-tracings of their assumed boundaries. Outside of studio, I'm found trekking through temperate rain forests, baking banana bread, and dreaming of one-day completing the NYT Saturday Crossword.
