Projects identified in the Loughborough Junction Plan

Page 1

Loughborough Junction Plan Visual Index of Projects To achieve the LJP vision, a bank of potential projects have been identified that could be delivered in the short, medium and long-term. These projects are illustrated here.

MASTERPLAN Loughborough Yards • Loughborough Junction’s railway network has given the area a number of unique yards, bridges and passageways. • Seven core projects have been identified, each containing a run of railway arches and at least one development opportunity.

Station Yard

• The grouping of the improvement works into seven projects is intended to offer multiple ways in which redevelopment can be bought forward by Lambeth Council or by private funding. For example, the yard can be developed as whole project, or the lighting across all yards can be prioritised.

1

• Provide a high-quality public realm that embodies the identity of the area. • A place for people to congregate. • Legible signage to the station and surrounding amenities. • Improvements for pedestrians & cyclists • Enhance the retail and commercial offer by improving access to hidden arches. • Refurbish the old station building.

Wickwood Yard

2

• Increase permeability through the arches to connect to the station. • Better connections with green spaces - a route between Wyck and Elam Gardens. • Address safety concerns via improved lighting and permeability. • Refurbish the rail substation as a public building. • Development opportunity

Padfield Yard

5

• Promote local manufacturing and employment. • A more positive aspect onto Coldharbour Lane with increased permeability. • Establish desired use of future development sites to protect neighbouring amenity and identity. • Subject of current planning application.

Cambria Yard

6

• Improve highways to manage the use of Padfield Road as a cut-through. • Promote Padfield Road as an alternative cycle route to the main junction. • Improve streetscape along Herne Hill Road. • Establish desired use of future development sites to protect neighbouring amenity and identity.

• Create a clear connection from Coldharbour Lane to Ruskin Park. • Improve lighting in the yard and bridge. • Consider a possible future connection through the UK Power Networks site. • Enhance the street presence to promote local businesses and amenities. • Guidance for development of the UKPN site in line with its KIBA designation.

• Two important spaces adjacent to the Hero of Switzerland pub have the potential to be enhanced to create an improved space for community activities. • The space is already used to host community events, but is also frequently used for parking. • Relocating parking and recycling facilities could allow an expanded programme.

• The Marcus Lipton Centre serves an important local need, but is under used by the wider community. • It is in need of refurbishment and improved management. • Improvements to its sports pitch and internal facilities are suggested to realise its potential.

Key routes have been identified to connect schools, local amenities and the wider area. Each route will be improved through enhancements to the public realm.

• These will act to build identity within the community, activate the key routes into Loughborough Junction and to tie the different neighbourhoods together through shared community facilities. • These projects will specifically target the creation, refurbishment and enhancement of community facilities and public realm. Opportunities for training and education will also be created through these projects.

viii

ix

• Lambeth currently owns a collection of buildings that accommodate some of the Council’s Public Health facilities. • In the future, these buildings may no longer be required by the Council leading to opportunities for the redevelopment of the site.
