Alex Ross

In keeping with SummerFest 2024’s theme, I invite you to create your own Inside Stories by digging deeper into the music this summer. Over the course of four weeks, 21 performances, and nearly 50 FREE Learning & Engagement Activities, you’ll be surprised and delighted at every turn thanks to brilliant programming by SummerFest Music Director and pianist Inon Barnatan.

With the wide variety of activities detailed in this guide, there are endless opportunities to learn something new and create lasting memories at SummerFest.

Open Rehearsals illuminate the dedication, diligence, and passion that SummerFest artists put into every performance, while Artist Lounges reveal meaningful insights from some of the festival’s musicians and composers.

In our Encounters, we welcome founder of Beginner’s Ear and former New York Times contributing critic Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim to lead audiences through an ear-opening experience that brings together science, mindfulness, and live music. We’ll also explore how lives can be transformed by music with a screening of the Oscar-winning documentary short film The Last Repair Shop. And we welcome back Ara Guzelimian, the Artistic and Executive Director of the Ojai Festival in California, who will take us back in time to the 1930s and ’40s when an extraordinary array of artists fled wartime Europe to make a new home in the promised land of Southern California.

I’m proud to announce that we have expanded one of our most beloved and impactful education programs, welcoming eight new Fellowship Artists to the festival this year. Follow their musical journey and build relationships with these emerging musicians who have studied at some of the world’s leading conservatories by attending Coaching Workshops, Fellowship Artist Spotlight Encounters, and Musical Preludes.

I look forward to seeing you this summer!

Better Listening with Music

Lecture by Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim with musical performance by SooBeen Lee, Rebecca Benjamin, and Leland Ko

Open your mind and ear with former New York Times contributing critic Corinna da FonsecaWollheim in a workshop that brings together science, mindfulness and live music. At a time of digital overstimulation and political overwhelm, listening can feel like an endangered skill. In fact, humans are biologically hard-wired to be bad listeners. Find out how music can help turn a cognitive quirk to our advantage and develop the focus, patience and generosity needed to become better listeners beyond the concert hall.

Tuesday, August 6 · 2 PM · The Baker-Baum Concert Hall

The Last Repair Shop Film Screening and Q&A with Producer Josh Rosenberg

From Academy Award-winning directing duo Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers, The Last Repair Shop grants access to the nondescript warehouse in the heart of downtown Los Angeles in which a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople maintain over 80,000 student musical instruments, the largest remaining workshop in America of its kind. Meet four unforgettable characters whose broken-and-repaired lives have been dedicated to bringing so much more than music to the schoolchildren of the recording capital of the world. A screening of the film will be followed by a Q&A with one of the film’s producers, Josh Rosenberg.

Tuesday, August 13 · 2 PM · The Baker-Baum Concert Hall

Fellowship Artist Spotlight I with Violist Matthew Lipman

Praised by The New York Times for his “rich tone and elegant phrasing,” violist Matthew Lipman has become one of the most sought-after instrumentalists of his generation, frequently appearing as both a soloist and chamber musician. He joins the Abeo Quartet to perform Dvořák’s String Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 97 “The American” for our first Fellowship Artist Spotlight performance along with duets from members of the Cohda Quartet.

California Dreaming: Exiles and Emigrés

Lecture by Ara Guzelimian

In the 1930s and ’40s, an extraordinary array of artists fled wartime Europe to make a new home in the promised land of Southern California. Everyone from Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Alma Mahler and Rachmaninoff to Max Reinhardt, Billy Wilder, Hedy Lamarr and Peter Lorre intersected under the sun, drawn by the lure of the palm trees, the Pacific and the creative promise of the young film industry. With Ara Guzelimian, the Artistic and Executive Director of the Ojai Music Festival in California, we explore this remarkable community through personal memoirs, rare films, and musical performances by festival artists.

Tuesday, August 20 · 2 PM · The Baker-Baum Concert Hall

Fellowship Artist Spotlight II with Violinist Simone Porter

Violinist Simone Porter has been recognized as an artist with impassioned energy, interpretive integrity, and vibrant communication. She joins Cohda Quartet while Fellowship Artist Anna Han joins Abeo Quartet to perform Dvořák’s Piano Quintet in A Major, No. 2, Op. 81 for an inspiring afternoon of piano quintet repertoire.

ARTIST LOUNGES

The spark of creativity is unique for every individual. Drawing on the theme “Inside Stories,” the Artist Lounge is an intimate, in-depth conversation hosted by Artistic Director Leah Rosenthal. Come discover more about these great artists in a warm, intimate setting.

Monday, July 29 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room

One of today’s most intriguing artists on the British music scene, it would be wrong to describe Liverpool-born Mark Simpson as either clarinetist or composer. His musical life is a symbiosis of his performing on the concert platform and poring over his manuscripts. Hailed as a “revelation” (Bachtrack) and “standout” (Guardian), he has now established himself as a major new voice on the international stage.

Monday, August 5 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room

Acclaimed for his stellar stage presence and joyous musicianship, cellist Sterling Elliott is a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and the winner of the Senior Division of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition. Already in his young career, he has appeared with many major orchestras and is fast becoming a favorite on the summer festival circuit. This season, he received a Sphinx Medal of Excellence, the highest honor bestowed by the Sphinx Organization, awarded to artists who early in their careers demonstrate artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination, and an ongoing commitment to leadership and their communities.

Monday, August 12 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room

The Washington Post describes acclaimed composer and cellist Paul Wiancko as “a restless and multifaceted talent who plays well with others”—a reference to his substantial collaborations with diverse artists like Max Richter, Chick Corea, Norah Jones, Arcade Fire, and The National. In 2023, he was named Director of Chamber Music at Spoleto Festival USA. He also recently became the cellist of the internationally celebrated Kronos Quartet, in addition to his role as a founding member of the viola and cello duo Ayane & Paul and Owls, a quartet-collective dubbed a “dream group” by The New York Times

Monday, August 19 · 1 PM · The Atkinson Room

At age 12, Yura Lee became the youngest artist ever to receive the Debut Artist of the Year prize at the Performance Today awards given by National Public Radio. Since then, her record-breaking and award-winning achievements have only continued. She’s a multifaceted musician as both a violinist and violist, and one of the very few who is equally virtuosic on both instruments. As a soloist and a chamber musician, her performances cover various musical mediums, captivating audiences with music from baroque to modern and enjoying a career that spans three decades and takes her all over the world.

HISTORY

The Fellowship Artist Program is one of our longest-running SummerFest traditions. For over 30 years, young artists and ensembles from the program have gone on to lead major orchestras and win international competitions and awards, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Fischoff Competition, and the Banff International String Quartet Competition. They’ve all launched successful careers, and many have returned to the festival as senior musicians.
