ERIC LU — PROGRAM NOTES

Program Notes by Eric Bromberger

Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, K.333

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Born January 27, 1756, Salzburg Died December 5, 1791, Vienna Composed: 1783 Approximate Duration: 18 minutes

Mozart published the Sonata in B-flat Major in Vienna in 1784, when he was 28. It was part of a set of three sonatas that formed one of his first publications in his newlyadopted home, and for many years this sonata was thought to have been composed during Mozart’s visit to Paris five years earlier, in 1778. During that visit Mozart had renewed his acquaintance with Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian. The two had first met in London in 1764 when Bach was 29 and Mozart was 8; they had played duets then with Mozart seated in Bach’s lap, and the two retained a musical respect and affection. Some critics were quick to detect the influence of Johann Christian Bach on this sonata, and they came to believe that Mozart had composed it during that visit Paris. More recent evidence has shown that this sonata is a later work, and it now appears that it was actually written in November 1783, when Mozart was on his way back to Vienna after taking his new wife to Salzburg to meet his father. But in fact J.C. Bach did have a strong influence on this sonata. The opening theme of the Sonata in B-flat Major bears an extremely close similarity to the opening of J.C. Bach’s Piano Sonata in G Major, Opus 17, No. 4, which Bach had shown to Mozart in Paris five years earlier. J.C. Bach composed in the galant style fashionable in mid-century Paris, a style that emphasized attractive melodies, clear textures, and an absence of contrapuntal complexities. Mozart had little use for the musical life of Paris, but he did admire Johann Christian, and the close similarity between these themes may be a gesture of admiration by Mozart for J.C. Bach’s keyboard writing. Mozart’s opening Allegro, very much in galant style, is graceful and smooth: even its big chords suddenly melt away into relaxed music, and the brief agitation at the beginning of the development does not really roil the waters. The marking for the second movement, Andante cantabile, is noteworthy because Mozart specified cantabile only when he wanted an unusually lyric performance. He moves to E-flat major here and marks the opening idea espressivo, but the really interesting part of this sonata

comes at the beginning of the second half, where this theme is taken through some daring modulations—there is a wildness to the harmonic freedom here, even in music otherwise so gentle, and Mozart concludes by bringing back his opening material, now richly embellished. But the most striking movement of all may be the last. This Allegretto grazioso, a rondo, opens with a poised central theme—and then come the surprises. The episodes are so beautifully worked out that each becomes an interlude with its own distinct character, and along the way even the rondo theme itself begins to evolve. Near the end comes the biggest surprise of all: with a great flourish the music arrives at a pause, and then Mozart writes out an impressive cadenza for the pianist, as if this movement were the finale of a piano concerto. What had been a gentle piano sonata suddenly erupts into powerful keyboard virtuosity, full of hammered chords and blazing 64th-note runs before the excitement subsides and the cadenza makes its way to a delicate close—we almost expect to hear the sound of an orchestra rejoining the piano at this point. Mozart rounds matters off with yet one more infinitely graceful evolution of his rondo theme.

Piano Sonata in A Major, D.959

FRANZ SCHUBERT Born January 31, 1797, Vienna Died November 19, 1828, Vienna Composed: 1828 Approximate Duration: 40 minutes

Schubert’s final year was dreadful. Ill for years, he went into steady decline in 1828 and died in November at age 31. Yet from those last months came a steady stream of masterpieces, and few of the achievements of that miraculous—and agonizing—year seem more remarkable than the composition of three large-scale piano sonatas in the month of September, barely eight weeks before his death. In the years following Schubert’s death, many of the works from this final year were recognized as the masterpieces they are, but the three piano sonatas made their way much more slowly. When they appeared in 1838, a decade after Schubert’s death, the publisher dedicated them to Schumann, one of Schubert’s greatest admirers, but even Schumann confessed mystification, noting with a kind of dismayed condescension that “Always musical and rich in songlike themes, these pieces ripple on, page after page . . .” Even as late as 1949, Schubert’s adoring biographer Robert Haven Schauffler could rate them “considerably below the level of the last symphonies and quartets, the String Quintet,

ERIC LU — PROGRAM NOTES

and the best songs.” It took Artur Schnabel’s championing these sonatas to rescue them from obscurity. The last of them, in fact, has today become one of the most familiar of all piano sonatas, with over forty recordings available. Nevertheless, these sonatas remain a refined taste, and some of the problem may lie in the fact that our notion of a piano sonata has been so conditioned by Beethoven that Schubert’s late sonatas—which conform neither structurally nor emotionally to the Beethoven model—can seem mystifying. Certainly the opening Allegro of the Sonata in A Major seems to be in a sort of sonata form, with a sharply declarative opening theme-group and a more flowing second subject marked pianissimo, but the development does not do the things that a Beethoven development has taught us to expect: instead, it grows almost entirely out of a wisp of a phrase from the second theme group and then proceeds to go its own way. Alfred Einstein both describes and defends Schubert’s method: “in place of a development proper Schubert spins a dreamy, ballad-like web of sound, the very existence of which is its own best justification.” Schubert rounds this long movement off with an impressive—and very quiet—coda derived from the opening material. The really stunning movement in this sonata is the Andantino. Structurally, this is in ternary form, but what music lies within this simple form! It opens with a wistful little melody that treads along its steady 3/8 meter and spins an air of painful melancholy. It is moving music, but the simplicity of this opening in no way prepares us for what happens at the center of this movement, where the pace moves ahead gradually and the movement suddenly explodes into furious, tormented music that rips violently across the keyboard. This turbulence passes, and the opening music—subtly embellished—resumes. Now its steady, subdued pace seems all the more moving for having regained control. The sprightly Scherzo whips along on flashing, dancing chords, with much of its sparkling character coming from the right hand’s being set in the piano’s ringing high register. The final movement seems consciously to call up echoes of the past. Many have noted the similarity between this rondo-finale and the one that Beethoven wrote to close out his Sonata in G Major, Opus 31, No. 1, there are echoes of Schubert’s own song Im Frühling in the pianist’s left hand, and Schubert borrowed the main theme of this movement from his own Piano Sonata in A Minor, composed in 1817. Schubert’s rondo is built on only two themes, and—unusually—they begin to develop as this movement proceeds. But matters never become too serious, and the impression this movement creates is of relaxed and exalted

music-making. Schubert provides a measure of structural completeness by rounding off the sonata with a Presto coda that recalls the opening of the first movement.

THIRD COAST PERCUSSION — PROGRAM NOTES

Stage Direction Leslie Buxbaum Danzig Lighting and Video Design Joe Burke La Jolla Music Society Livestream Director Tristan Cook

This performance marks Third Coast Percussion and Quentin Robinson’s La Jolla Music Society debuts. Myles Yachts last performed for La Jolla Music Society’s Jazz Series on October 3, 2018.

Program Notes by Third Coast Percussion Collaboration and Transformation This performance is a meeting of fearless and generous collaborators from unique artistic backgrounds, creators deeply rooted in their own tradition but whose branches reach curiously into the broad expressive world surrounding them. Lil Buck and Jon Boogz founded Movement Art Is to explore how their virtuosic street dancing abilities, rooted in popping and Memphis jookin’, could tell the important stories of modern life. Third Coast Percussion has carved its own special place in the cultural landscape by showing the incredible flexibility of percussion chamber music to give voice to expressions from a diverse range of artists. At the heart of this collaboration is a celebration of each individual’s expressive language and the experiences that shaped it, as well as a curiosity to see each artist’s energy translated into the vocabulary of another. Just as the choreography created by Buck and Boogz is set onto different bodies — their proteges Myles Yachts and Quentin Robinson — for performance, tonight’s program highlights how music is also transformed as it is passed from one artist to another. The innovative producer Jlin (whose roots are in Chicago’s “Footwork” style of dance music) composed her Perspective as a series of electronic tracks, with the intent that Third Coast Percussion would reimagine this music on acoustic instruments for live performance. The music of minimalist icon Philip Glass that appears on this program is an arrangement of an arrangement, music finding its third incarnation in TCP’s distinctive sound world. In this year of isolation, the opportunity to make art together is valued in a new way. The full creative team — MAI, TCP, stage director Leslie Danzig and lighting

designer Joe Burke — had planned to come together in Seattle for a summer residency to build this project on the stage of the Meany Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Washington. When the residency could not take place, this determined team found ways—connecting via rehearsal videos shared on the cloud, simulated mockups of stage set-ups and light renderings, and of course, many Zoom meetings—to build this project together across long distances, and continues transforming the project into versions for audiences to experience through a screen, and eventually, in person. However you are experiencing this program, we hope this performance speaks to you, and we hope that you will have the joy of creating something together with others again soon. The Music Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times. His “Amazon River” and “Metamorphosis” were works originally composed for piano (as “Etude no. 2” and “Metamorphosis 1,” respectively), then arranged for Brazilian musical group Uakti as part of their project Aguas da Amazonia for their own gamut of instruments, many of which were custom-made and built by the performers. Drawing on both the Uakti arrangement and the original piano music, the members of Third Coast Percussion arranged and re-orchestrated these pieces utilizing mallet percussion instruments and other unique instrumental colors such as melodica, desk bells, and almglocken (tuned Swiss cowbells).

THIRD COAST PERCUSSION — PROGRAM NOTES

Jlin ( Jerrilynn Patton) is a producer based in Gary, Indiana. Her unique and evolving electronic sound is rooted in Chicago’s iconic footwork style, with additional influences ranging from Nina Simone to Igor Stravinsky. Jlin’s work assembles evocative and vivid sounds into a musical style that she describes as “clean, precise, and unpredictable.” Her debut album Dark Energ y was released to critical acclaim in 2015, and her second album Black Origami in 2017 to rave reviews from NPR Music and Pitchfork. She has composed for Kronos Quartet and choreographer Wayne McGregor, and has recently performed at the Big Ears Festival, Whitney Museum of Art, and Toledo Museum of Art, among others. Her seven-movement work Perspective was written for Third Coast Percussion through a highly collaborative process. After exploring and sampling instruments from TCP’s vast collection of percussion sounds at their studio in Chicago, she created an electronic version of each of the work’s seven movements using these samples and other sounds from her own library. The members of Third Coast Percussion then set about determining how to realize these pieces in live performance. Diving into each of the audio tracks, the percussionists found dozens of sonic layers, patterns that never seem to repeat when one would expect them to, and outrageous sounds that are hard to imagine recreating acoustically. Even typical percussion sounds like snare drum, hi-hat, or kick drum exist in multiple variations, subtle timbral shades in counterpoint or composite sounds. In pursuit of the broad expressive range of Jlin’s original tracks, TCP’s live version of this piece incorporates mixing bowls filled with water, bird calls, a variety of gongs and tambourines, and a metal spring coil, as well as many variations of drum set-like sounds: instruments that are like a hi-hat but not a hi-hat, or serve the function of a snare drum but are not a snare drum. Jlin named her piece Perspective as a reference to this unique collaborative process, that this work would exist in two forms, the same music as interpreted through different artists and their modes of expression. Perspective by Jlin was commissioned for Third Coast Percussion by the Boulanger Initiative, Carnegie Hall, the Lester & Hope Abelson Fund for the Performing Arts at the Chicago Community Foundation, the DEW Foundation, and Third Coast Percussion’s New Works Fund. Brooklyn-based composer and performer Tyondai Braxton has been writing and performing music under his own name and collaboratively under various group titles

and collectives since the mid-1990s, including in the art rock group Battles from its formation until 2010. Braxton has been commissioned by Kronos Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alarm Will Sound, and Brooklyn Rider, has had his orchestral work performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, and the Wordless Music Orchestra, and has worked with pioneering bands Mouse on Mars and Dirty Projectors. In collaboration with artist Uffe Surland Van Tams, Braxton premiered HIVE, a multimedia sculptural and electronic project for 2 electronic artists and 3 percussionists at The Guggenheim Museum in New York City in 2013, later transforming this music into the solo album HIVE1. Braxton’s new work for Third Coast Percussion, Sunny X, further develops his experiments with electronic sounds and live percussionists, utilizing more idiosyncratic instruments such as wooden and metal slats, steel pipes, Thai gongs, and crotales, with electronic playback generated with modular synthesizer.

“Predominantly set up as meditations on small phrases of non-pitched (or *partially* pitched) percussion and mercurial electronics, the piece explores different permutations of these meditations where the relationship between the acoustic and electronic realms seems to work together, slip around and contrast.” —Tyondai Braxton

Sunny X evolved through multiple workshops together in TCP’s studio, experimenting with combinations of these unique sounds and discovering musical content that emerges naturally from the idiomatics of the instruments and their physical layout. In particular, a musical and physical gesture that plays prominently in the piece revealed itself when the wooden planks were stacked on top of each other, rather that set side-by-side on a table. Sunny X was commissioned for Third Coast Percussion by the Sewanee Music Festival, George Mason University, and Carnegie Hall with additional support from Third Coast Percussion’s New Works Fund.

REMEMBERING LJMS IN YOUR WILL It is easy to make a bequest to La Jolla Music Society, and no amount is too small to make a difference. Here is a sample of language that can be incorporated into your will: “I hereby give ___% of my estate (or specific assets) to La Jolla Music Society, Tax ID 27-3147181, 7600 Fay Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037, for its artistic programs (or education, general operating, or where needed most).

The Legacy Society recognizes those generous individuals who have chosen to provide for La Jolla Music Society’s future. Members have remembered La Jolla Music Society in their estate plans in many ways — through their wills, retirement gifts, life income plans, and many other creative planned giving arrangements. We thank them for their vision and hope you will join this very special group of friends. If you have included LJMS in your estate plans, please let us know so we may recognize you. 7600 FAY AVENUE, LA JOLLA, CA 92037 • 858.459.3728 • LJMS.ORG | 23

JOIN OUR FAMILY For more than 50 years, La Jolla Music Society has helped nurture a love of music by keeping one vision in mind: To present diverse programs of great music performed by the best musicians in the world. Today, that vision has reached beyond the intimate beauty of the chamber music ensemble and into new and diverse offerings such as orchestras, jazz ensembles, dance companies, and robust education programs. This impressive growth has been carefully conducted by an active and highly committed volunteer board of directors and a dedicated staff. But most importantly, La Jolla Music Society’s progress has been sustained by the generosity of the community and ticket buyers.

...with a gift today! During these extraordinary and unprecedented times, gifts to La Jolla Music Society help bring the music you love to audiences in San Diego and around the world. Every contribution is significant in helping us to create engaging programs that can be experienced at home and at outdoor spaces. La Jolla Music Society’s legacy is one of resilience and has endured for half a century, and with your support, we will once again prevail during this precarious time. Through your patronage, you are setting the tone for the future. Please consider making a donation today. With help from devoted arts patrons like you, we can look forward to bringing back unforgettable live performances for all to enjoy.

We have so much to celebrate today, but just think of where we might be 50 years from now? There are creative endeavors yet to be imagined: young musicians now in training who could defy our highest expectations; and scores of young students that could be introduced to the joy of music for the first time. An endowment makes that possible. Please join us in ensuring that The Conrad, a cultural and community treasure, remains a vital resource to our generation and all those to follow.
