Dear

Friends, We couldn’t be more excited to announce the 54th Winter Season of La Jolla Music Society!

From Yo-Yo Ma, Joyce DiDonato, and Daniil Trifonov to Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, The War and Treaty, Alisa Weilerstein, and Chucho Valdés Quartet, some of the greatest artists will grace our stage time and again over the coming year, and we hope you’ll join us to experience the Season with your friends and family.

Our roots may lie in classical and chamber music, but over the years our programming has grown to embrace many genres—always with the single goal of presenting the best artists in the world right here in San Diego. For the past 14 years, Artistic Director Leah Rosenthal’s leadership, taste and connections have helped guide each season, as she hand-picks artists and ensembles specifically for our community. From rising performers destined for greatness to established stars, our programming includes the best of chamber, piano, jazz, mariachi, dance, world music and more, and there is certainly something for everyone this season.

Subscribe now by calling our box office or visiting LJMS.org. We have ten series to choose from, —Piano, Chamber, Recital, Jazz, Dance, and Discovery, and more. Plan to join us for a season-long journey of unforgettable performances.

Described by The New York Times as one of the “most important artists of his generation,” Igor Levit places his art in the context of social events and understands it as inseparably linked to them. In 2020, Levit was named Musical America’s Recording Artist of the Year and nominated for a GRAMMY® Award in the category

“Best Classical Instrumental Solo.” This unique program riffs on the genre of musical preludes, including a jazz-influenced piece by Fred Hersch.

Exploring and building connections between music and the human experience, Midori consistently breaks with traditional boundaries, making her one of the most outstanding violinists of our time. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of her debut, she offers two different and exciting programs in which contemporary works dialogue with Bach compositions. Neither is to be missed.

In society, poets and songwriters play the essential role of dreamers, opening up avenues of hope for others. Despite the oppressive regimes which prevailed throughout much of Latin America and Spain in the twentieth century, what persevered from the dreamers was an unending love for beauty and humanity. Mexican-born songstress Magos Herrera and the omnivorous string quartet Brooklyn Rider join forces for an unforgettable musical journey, reinterpreting classics of the era from Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Spain, and celebrating such luminaries as Octavio Paz, Federico García Lorca, and Rubén Darío.

BALBOA THEATRE

Unbridled passion and torrid energy, never letting up, but spiraling higher and higher with a soul-searing musical power.

Since forming in 2014, The War & Treaty have amassed a following as eclectic as their sound itself, a bluesy but joyful fusion of Southern soul, gospel, country, and rock-and-roll. Known for live shows that are revival-like in their intensity, the husband-and-wife team of Michael Trotter, Jr. and Tanya Blount-Trotter create an exhilarating exchange of energy with their audience, a dynamic they’ve brought to the stage in opening for the legendary Al Green and touring with the likes of Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell.

Drumming crosses cultures and unites us in the dance of the heart. An international phenomenon, GRAMMY® Award-winning tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain is one of the foremost percussionists of the contemporary world. Widely recognized as a chief architect of the world music movement, Hussain has participated in historic collaborations, including Shakti, Remember Shakti, and his ever-changing musical feast, Masters of Percussion, a platform for rarely heard rhythm traditions from India. Over time, the Masters of Percussion ensemble has expanded to include great drummers and percussionists from many world traditions, including jazz, as well as the occasional stringed instrument.
