In society, poets and songwriters play the essential role of dreamers, opening up avenues of hope for others. Despite the oppressive regimes which prevailed throughout much of Latin America and Spain in the twentieth century, what persevered from the dreamers was an unending love for beauty and humanity. Mexican-born songstress Magos Herrera and the omnivorous string quartet Brooklyn Rider join forces for an unforgettable musical journey, reinterpreting classics of the era from Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Spain, and celebrating such luminaries as Octavio Paz, Federico García Lorca, and Rubén Darío.

MASTERS OF PERCUSSION
SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 2023 · 7:30 PM
BALBOA THEATRE
Unbridled passion and torrid energy, never letting up, but spiraling higher and higher with a soul-searing musical power.
Since forming in 2014, The War & Treaty have amassed a following as eclectic as their sound itself, a bluesy but joyful fusion of Southern soul, gospel, country, and rock-and-roll. Known for live shows that are revival-like in their intensity, the husband-and-wife team of Michael Trotter, Jr. and Tanya Blount-Trotter create an exhilarating exchange of energy with their audience, a dynamic they’ve brought to the stage in opening for the legendary Al Green and touring with the likes of Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell.
Drumming crosses cultures and unites us in the dance of the heart. An international phenomenon, GRAMMY® Award-winning tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain is one of the foremost percussionists of the contemporary world. Widely recognized as a chief architect of the world music movement, Hussain has participated in historic collaborations, including Shakti, Remember Shakti, and his ever-changing musical feast, Masters of Percussion, a platform for rarely heard rhythm traditions from India. Over time, the Masters of Percussion ensemble has expanded to include great drummers and percussionists from many world traditions, including jazz, as well as the occasional stringed instrument.
