TRANSFORMATION WELCOME TO SUMMERFEST 2019! Mahler once said “tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.” As the new Music Director of Summerfest, I am proud to be the keeper of that flame, and I am even more honored to present to you the program for this year’s festival. I am extremely grateful to all of the incredible artists joining us this summer, and I hope to see you all at our new and wonderful home, The Conrad! For my first festival, I wanted to explore a question that I have always found fascinating, and one that is particularly appropriate during this transformative time for SummerFest: How do we build on the past and at the same time look to the future? This question led to this year’s theme of TRANSFORMATION, an idea we will examine from different angles throughout the festival. How does new music come from old music? How do composers transform other composers’ music, or rethink their own? How does one art-form interact with and change another? How does the physical space affect how we experience music? Join us in the exploration, and be transformed.
