JULY 28-AUGUST 26, 2023 FESTIVAL SUBSCRIPTIONS NOW AVAILABLE
THE GREAT UNKNOWN
SummerFest 2023 celebrates The Great Unknown: The joy of discovery and rediscovery, the delight in the unexpected, and the mystery of the exotic. We explore fantastical and otherworldly pieces, myths, fairy tales, dreams, and memories, reveling both in the canon’s most beloved works and in hidden gems from well-known, lesser-known and previously silenced composers. Above all, The Great Unknown personifies the mysterious and intangible nature of music and how it continues to transform, inspire and surprise us all.
ALL PERFORMANCES IN THE BAKER-BAUM CONCERT HALL, UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
FRIDAY JULY 28 7:30 PM
SUMMERFEST OPENING NIGHT EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
This festival delights in the unknown, the surprising and the unexpected. In that spirit, music director Inon Barnatan has created a concert program that will not be disclosed in advance and which, like an Omakase meal at a sushi restaurant, invites you to trust the chef to create an unforgettable experience. Superstar conductor Alan Gilbert, principal conductor of Hamburg’s Elbephilharmonie and former music director of the New York Philharmonic, leads an all-star cast of musicians in an unmissable program of chamber and orchestral works, including a virtuosic showstopper, a lush symphony and an iconic piano concerto.
SATURDAY JULY 29 7:30 PM
