For me, living in student accommodation is a great way to move out for the first time and have your first real taste of independence. All your bills are included, which takes away the hassle, plus you get to meet so many people from different courses and backgrounds. I love the hustle and bustle of being in the city centre; there is always something to do on your doorstep!

MY ADVICE FOR NEW STUDENTS:

1 2 3

Be friendly with your flat mates and share certain foods, bread, salt, etc. so you don’t let food go to waste. Clean as you go - it keeps mess to a minimum and makes your job easier. Don’t suffer in silence - if you are struggling with anything talk to staff or Residential Assistants!

ACCOMMODATION

What you need to know when booking your student accommodation.

CONTRACTS Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found. Tenancies commence on Friday 18 September 2020 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 9 July 2021. Induction week for new students starts on 21 September and teaching begins on Monday 28 September 2020. It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year you can usually extend the tenancy period over the summer.

Don’t forget that you don’t have to move out over the Christmas and Easter breaks; the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year. All students from outside the UK are required to pay for their accommodation in full and in advance of their arrival in Liverpool. Please contact our Accommodation Office if you have any concerns. accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk + 44 (0)151 231 4166

17

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations. If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, or advice about family accommodation please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation

PRIVATE RENTED ACCOMMODATION Liverpool student homes or LSH is the official student housing agency used by LJMU. If you do not want to live in LJMUapproved student accommodation, LSH will be able to advise you on the type and availability of private houses and flats to rent in the city.

DISABLED STUDENTS Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. To discuss further contact our Disability Advice Team. disability@ljmu.ac.uk + 44 (0)151 231 3164/3165

YOUR DREAM JOB It might seem a little early to think about what you’ll be doing after graduation but it’s important that you study at a university that will give you the skills, experience and contacts you need for professional success. Every programme at LJMU is specifically designed to do just that and that’s why our students are highly valued by employers.

Over 95% of our students are in work or further study six months after they graduate DLHE survey 2016/17

21

Over 1000 local and regional

employers regularly list jobs on this website, which is only open to LJMU students. STUART WORKMAN GRADUATED FROM SOFTWARE ENGINEERING IN 2017 AND SECURED A GRADUATE ROLE AS A PRODUCT OWNER AT WEARENOVA AFTER COMPLETING A YEAR-LONG PLACEMENT AT THE COMPANY.

I felt very confident in so many of my final year modules using the knowledge and experience I’d gained from my placement. I was initially concerned as to how relevant it was for my course, but there was so much to take away from it. Even the areas of my course which weren’t part of my placement benefitted from the exposure I had working with others and seeing the different tasks that were required.

What advice would you give to other students to improve their employability? I’d definitely recommend taking some time to build up a network on LinkedIn, and perhaps build a small website demonstrating your key skills and interests. Don’t make the mistake of thinking employers are going to come to you. You need to get yourself out there, going to events, conferences, conducting your own research so you can lay a good foundation for your career.

24

CAREERS ADVICE FROM THE START

TRAVELLING TO THE UK TO START YOUR STUDIES OUR TRAVEL TIPS SHOULD MAKE TRAVELLING TO THE UK A SIMPLER AND MORE ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE. In this section you’ll find our tips for packing and travelling, as well as three steps you’ll need to follow when you first arrive in the UK. We have included details about our airport pick-up service too. WHAT TO PACK AND WHAT NOT TO PACK OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS: Make sure you bring all the documentation you’ll need to clear immigration and customs. You should also take a photocopy of all important documents, including your passport and immigration documents. Keep the photocopies in your hand luggage. LUGGAGE: Check the airline’s luggage allowance and only pack as much as you can carry. Make a list of everything you pack, so that if your luggage is lost you can account for any missing items. HAND LUGGAGE: If you are arriving into the UK in September it can feel quite cool. We recommend that you pack a jumper in your hand luggage. In case your luggage is delayed or lost, you should also pack any essential overnight items in your hand luggage, such as toiletries and a change of clothing.

CLOTHES: Liverpool’s climate ranges from warm in the Summer to frosty in the Winter. If you come from a very different climate it may be cheaper to buy suitable clothes for the different seasons when you arrive in Liverpool. FOOD: It is illegal to bring meat, fish, plants and honey into the UK. Please see the HM Custom and Excise website for prohibited goods. Liverpool has lots of supermarkets selling a variety of foods from all over the world. ELECTRICAL ITEMS: Please ensure all your electrical items are insured while in transit. You will be able to buy adaptors here, but they may be cheaper if you buy them before you travel.

PLANNING YOUR JOURNEY TO LIVERPOOL We offer an airport pick-up service which you’ll need to book in advance – find out more about this service at the following link: ljmu.ac.uk/international/holding-offerof-study/when-you-arrive Please check the start date on your CAS statement or your offer paperwork before booking flights. If you are able to enter the country in time for your indicated enrolment date, we strongly recommend you take part in all activities during your first week to help you integrate into life on campus. If you need more information or would like some advice, contact international@ljmu.ac.uk Or visit the following link: ljmu.ac.uk/international/holding-offerof-study/pre-departure-advice
