Yes you can although we would advise no more than two guests where possible.

–Will student accommodation be available to view?

Yes, all of our available accommodation will be available to view but halls may not be open once they become fully booked. The latest information is available at ljmu.ac.uk/ accommodation.

How do I book onto the student life webinars and opt in for a phone call about the course?

Once you’ve booked a place, you will receive an email giving you the option to sign up to receive a phone call about the course. We will then call you at a time most suitable to you.

If you book onto one of our on-campus Applicant Days, here is an example of what you might expect. Please be aware that this is just a sample itinerary. You will be sent a confirmed itinerary for your event a few days beforehand.

Some courses may also require you to attend an interview or conduct an assessment. Full details on what you’ll be expected to do will be sent to you in advance so you are fully prepared. RESULTS DAY AND CONFIRMATION

A Level results are released on 14 August. Provided you’ve selected LJMU as your conditional firm choice and you meet all the conditions of your offer, you will automatically be accepted onto your course at the university. If you don’t meet your offer requirements, we will carefully review your application and we may still be able to accept you onto your chosen course.

If that’s not possible, we may see if we can make you an offer for an alternative relevant course. Please see your UCAS Hub for details on the day or contact our confirmation hotline.

STARTING AT LJMU

You will complete your student registration online before you arrive at the university for enrolment and start your induction programme. Full details will be included in your LJMU starter pack.

Your first week at LJMU will be packed full of things to do and places to see. You will receive an invitation to attend a welcome event where you will be able to find out more about university services, what’s happening in the city and meet other new students.

As a new student you will be expected to complete an induction programme prior to the official start of the academic year. Induction is your opportunity to get to know your academic team, meet your personal tutor and start to make friends with people on your course. Your starter pack will give you more details on what to expect and when.

John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU, see page 28) also organise a programme of activities to help you settle into university life and find out more about Liverpool’s exciting student scene. These events usually start during the official moving in weekend and continue until week one of semester one. Look out for updates from JMSU after confirmation.

Located in the heart of the city, our landmark three and a half acre development, Copperas Hill, is at the centre of your student experience.

A five-storey building housing a range of student-facing services, including advice and wellbeing, careers advice, international exchanges, chaplaincy, an area for individual and group study, the Students’ Union (JMSU) and general teaching spaces.

Our ActiveLJMU programme combines recreational sport and semi-competitive leagues and competitions. Sports clubs need more than just the players – from managers to coaches, treasurers to social secretaries - and that’s just for starters! Volunteering within sport provides a great opportunity to take on additional responsibility and develop transferable skills all whilst supporting your teammates and making lifelong friends.

Take your game to the next level by joining one of our 50+ LJMU sports teams currently competing within British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS). By joining one of the BUCS teams, you’ll be able to represent Team LJMU playing competitive sport against other universities across the country.

Can’t see a sport that takes your fancy? Why not start your own! Remember: you can join a sports club even if you have no previous experience of playing the sport. We’re all about trying something new. So go on, give it a go! You never know, you might uncover a hidden talent, achieve your personal best or help lift your team’s trophy.

Our Sports Scholarship scheme is a leading initiative in the UK, helping talented students fulfil both their sporting and academic potential. Sports Scholars receive specialist guidance from experts in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, extra study support and cash bursaries.

OUTSTANDING TEACHING AND LEARNING

All our degrees are designed and delivered in a way that best suits the subject being taught, and the knowledge and skills you are expected to develop as part of your studies.

During your induction, your tutors will outline what modules and topics you’ll be studying during your first year at LJMU. You’ll find out more about any examinations or assignments you’ll be expected to complete and they will also explain what background reading and independent study you are required to undertake in addition to scheduled activities in your timetable.

Scheduled activities take a wide variety of forms. Depending on your subject these may include:

The ‘at home’ feeling created by the team has without a shadow of a doubt made our university a safer, better place for students from across the university. Though they always seem to have a million and one things to do, they always find the time to help and support me and other students.

Making the jump into degree-level study can be challenging at first. We can support and help you develop good study habits, giving you the confidence to succeed in your course every step of the way.

Academic skills such as searching for information, critical thinking, academic writing and referencing play a key part in university study and assessment. You may also need to develop your maths or English, and use of digital technology.

To help you develop these skills, library services provide online learning resources, regular classes and drop-ins, as well as one-toone appointments for all students.

SUPPORTING YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY

Our Student Advice and Wellbeing team can give you advice and guidance on everything from accommodation, money management, mental health and wellbeing and support for disabled students. The University can also advise you about your eligibility for student funding, such as grants, loans, childcare and bursaries.

It’s totally normal to feel slightly worried or overwhelmed about starting university, so it’s important to remember that you are not on your own at LJMU. There is a range of support in place to help you get the best start.

Each Hall has a dedicated SLA mentor. They are the first point of contact for new students living and settling into LJMU partner accommodation.

We run a programme of events to support you settling into university life. This can be a useful way to meet people, share experiences and learn new skills such as cooking meals on a budget and self-care tips.

SUMMER SCHOOL

Each year, LJMU sends groups of students on 1-4 week programmes that focus on UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and combine cultural immersion with academic projects and community engagement activities. STUDY ABROAD

Most LJMU students can study abroad for a semester or year as part of their LJMU degree. Whether you study in Japan or Norway, USA or France you will be taught in English and it will count towards your degree. If you want to immerse yourself in a different culture while enhancing your academic learning, this is the thing for you!

This has definitely been the most independent and enriching experience that I have ever done and I am so grateful that I have completed this internship… I feel that I have gained valuable work experience as well as learning so much about another culture that is so different from my own.

TUITION FEES AND LOANS

You will be charged a tuition fee for each year of your course. Tuition fees for courses commencing in the 2025/26 academic year are £9,535 per year*. The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees in accordance with any changes to the maximum allowable fees set by the UK Parliament. In the event of such a change, any fee increase will be subject to a maximum cap of 10% of the total course cost as originally stated at the time of your offer. There is no need to pay your tuition fees up front as eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan for each year of their course. This loan is not means tested which means your household income will not affect your eligibility.

Your tuition fee loan will cover all of your tuition fee costs and will be paid direct to LJMU. See page 10 for information on loan repayments.

You will pay for your accommodation on dates that coincide with your student maintenance payments, making it easier for you to plan your budget

STUDENT LOANS FOR LIVING COSTS (MAINTENENCE LOANS)

In addition to a tuition fee loan, you can also apply for a loan for your living costs. The amount you will be eligible to receive depends on a number of factors such as your household income and if you are living in your parental home or elsewhere. The following are the maximum loan rates for the 2024/25 year for a student from England**.

• £8,610 if you are living in your parental home

• £10,227 if you are living elsewhere

Unlike the tuition fee loan which is paid direct to LJMU, maintenance loans are paid into your bank account. They are paid in three instalments and it’s up to you how it is spent – and also how you budget!

*For some degrees with foundation year commencing in 2025/26, the fee for the foundation first year will differ from the fee for the second and subsequent years. Please refer to the relevant course page on ljmu. ac.uk for details of the fees for the course.

If you’re eligible, you can get:

• a training grant of £5,000 per academic year

• parental support of £2,000, if you have at least one dependent child under 15 years, or under 17 years if registered with special educational needs.

**This only applies to students from England as those from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales can be eligible to receive grants

STUDENTS AND BENEFITS

The majority of full-time students are not eligible for benefits while they are studying.

Exceptions to this are:

• lone parents with a dependent child/children. The age of your children can affect which benefits you are eligible for

• students with disabilities or ongoing health conditions

• students who are pensioners

• student couples with at least one dependent child

• students who have suspended their studies due to ill health or caring responsibilities

HOW HOUSEHOLD INCOME AFFECTS STUDENT FUNDING

Some student funding is only allocated following an assessment of your household income (see table below for approximate figures). This process is called income assessment (or means testing) and if you are under 25 this is normally based on the income of your parents.

• If your parents are divorced/separated, the income of the parent you live with most of the time will be used

• If your parent cohabits or has remarried, the joint income will be assessed

• If you meet one of the following criteria you will be treated as independent from your parents and their income:

• You are 25 or over on the 1st Sept 2025

• Are married or in a civil relationship (but they will look at the income of your partner)

• Have a dependent child

• Have supported yourself financially for 3 years on 1st September 2025

• If you have been in local authority care for 3 months before your 16th birthday (see page 11)

• If you are estranged from your family (see page 11)

*You do not have to apply for the LJMU bursary. NB. Figures for students from England for 2024 entry.

APPLYING FOR YOUR STUDENT FUNDING

Apply online at gov.uk/student-finance from February 2025 if you are starting your course in September 2025.

REPAYING YOUR STUDENT LOAN

Any loans you take out to cover your tuition fees or living costs will be added together into a single loan account. This means that when you start paying back your student loans, you will only make one affordable monthly payment. Your repayment amount is always the same, as it is based on a percentage of your salary not how much you have borrowed.

If your income is over £25,000* your employer will start taking repayments from your salary just like tax and national insurance, and after 40 years any money still owed is written off.

The table opposite will give you an idea of what your repayments might look like once you have left university and you’re earning over £25,000*:

• If your income falls below £25,000* your loan repayments will automatically stop

• After 40 years anything you owe on your student loans is written off

* £25,000 repayment threshold applies to students that normally live in England only. Repayments will differ depending on where in the UK you live. Please consult your funding body’s website.

HAVE YOU STUDIED BEFORE

In higher education, student funding is generally available for the length of your course, plus an additional year (if required). Additional funding may be available for students that have had to leave a course due to health problems or for other personal reasons.

It is really important that you seek advice if you have studied previously. We can clarify exactly how your prior study will impact on your future entitlement and advise you what steps to take to maximise any funding available.

LJMU BURSARY

LJMU bursaries are automatically paid to eligible students every year of your course – you do not need to apply. The annual LJMU bursary is currently £500.

LJMU bursaries are additional, free money that you don’t have to pay back. How you spend it is up to you.

To qualify you must meet the residence requirements for student funding (grants and loans) and have a household income of £25,000/year or less. You must also be paying the annual maximum University tuition fee for 2025/26 year.

STUDENT SUPPORT FUND

Sometimes despite your best efforts you can find yourself in financial difficulty. This could be due to a delay in funding or unforeseen circumstances. LJMU’s Student Support Fund is available to students who find themselves in such a position. Last year we helped over 2500 students with support.

DISABLED STUDENTS ALLOWANCE (DSA)

If you declare a disability or medical condition to LJMU, you can access specialist support and guidance to assist you during your studies. This support can include, exam and study support, mental health support, ASC support, library support, mobility support and more. Please contact us for further information if you are unsure you are eligible or do not know what support you will need.

The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is designed to help meet the extra course costs students can face as a direct result of a disability, ongoing health condition, mental health condition or Specific Learning Difficulty. DSA is paid on top of the standard student finance package and does not have to be paid back.

You should apply for DSA when you apply for your student funding - please don’t wait. Don’t worry if you’re not 100% certain which course you will be studying, as just like your application for student finance it is possible to update your DSA application at a later date.

STUDENTS WITH DEPENDANTS

If you have either an adult who is financially dependent on you or dependant children, you can apply for additional funding including a grant for childcare.

In addition, if you have an underlying eligibility for benefits (such as a lone parent) you can receive a higher rate of maintenance loan for living costs.

A Childcare Grant will cover up to 85% of approved or accredited childcare in both term time and holidays.

The Adult Dependants’ Grant is for students with a dependant partner and Parents Learning Allowance is a grant for those with children.

SUPPORT FOR CARE LEAVERS AND STUDENTS ESTRANGED FROM THEIR FAMILIES

If you are care experienced or estranged from your family, we recognise that you may have specific questions about starting your studies at LJMU. Our dedicated staff within Student Advice and Wellbeing Services can work with you to plan out what support you might benefit from at each stage of your journey.

Our support includes:

• Meeting you at university events such as Open Days, Campus Tours and Applicant Days

• Liaising with you and any support workers you might have

• A dedicated point of contact within Student Advice and Wellbeing Services to provide ongoing advice and support

In addition we offer:

• The Imagine Award, an annual bursary of £1000 per academic year for eligible students.

• Access to 365-day accommodation in an LJMU partner hall

• Wellbeing, counselling and mental health support

• Careers and employability support

• Opportunities to meet other care experienced and estranged students in the LJMU community

LJMU was awarded the NNECL Quality Mark in Spring 2022 in recognition of the enhanced support we offer care experienced students throughout their time at the University. We were also one of the first universities in the country to take the StandAlone Pledge, committing to support students who are estranged studying in higher education.

LJMU is committed to supporting young adult carers and currently works in partnership with Barnardos Young Adult Carers Service in Liverpool. Our dedicated member of staff for young adult carers can provide you with further information and advise you on what support is available.

Every year we award a range of scholarships to support students from a range of backgrounds. These pages give you an introduction of what scholarships you can apply for if you study at the Liverpool John Moores University.

OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

The aim of the Opportunity Scholarship is to enhance diversity, supporting access, participation and outcomes of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who come to LJMU.

It would be expected that applicants have participated fully in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach programmes to be eligible and applicants must meet ethnically diverse criteria to apply.

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP

The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship has been introduced to recognise the diverse and inspiring nature of the LJMU student community. These high profile scholarships have been developed to reward the success of students that may have had a different and sometimes longer path into Higher Education or have overcome adversity in some way. So, if you are a care leaver, a young adult carer, disabled, (however, see Sir Bert Massie Scholarship), Black and Asian Minority Ethnic or a mature student, we would love to hear from you.

I was awarded the LJMU Community Excellence Scholarship based on my work with arts in the community. I used my videography skills to raise money for charity, making several fundraisers and generally got involved in as much community work within the arts as I could. Don’t hesitate to apply for scholarship - it’s definitely made life easier, it gives you a safety net and just takes some of the pressure off.

For me, living in student accommodation is a great way to move out for the first time and have your first real taste of independence. All your bills are included, which takes away the hassle, plus you get to meet so many people from different courses and backgrounds. I love the hustle and bustle of being in the city centre; there is always something to do on your doorstep! My advice for new students:

Be friendly with your flat mates and share certain foods, bread, salt, etc. so you don’t let food go to waste.

Clean as you go - it keeps mess to a minimum and makes your job easier.

Don’t suffer in silence - if you are struggling with anything talk to someone. The staff on reception or our friendly Student Living Assistants are there to help.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BOOKING YOUR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

CONTRACTS

Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found.

Tenancies commence on Saturday 13 September 2025 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 3 July 2026. Induction week for new students starts on 15 September and teaching begins on Monday 22 September 2025.

It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year – for example Midwifery – you will be given a full calendar year tenancy as standard. Don’t forget that you

don’t have to move out over the Christmas and Easter breaks, the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year in all cases.

MONEY MATTERS

Rent is paid in three equal instalments that coincide with your student funding payments if you are a UK student, who can provide a guarantor*, so it is important that you apply for your student funding as soon as possible – don’t put this off! It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford.

*Your guarantor will most likely be a parent or guardian, and they must agree to act in this capacity

MATURE STUDENTS

The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations.

If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. HEALTHCARE STUDENTS

Nursing, midwifery and paramedic students have different schedules due to placement work, often getting up when other students are going to bed! For this reason we strongly recommend healthcare students choose Atlantic Point, Glassworks, Marybone 1 or Marybone 3 and share their flat with students on similar courses.

Limited parking is available for students at Atlantic Point.

SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST

If LJMU is your Firm (first) choice, you can submit your accommodation request via the LJMU Applicant Hub. You can submit your request regardless of whether you hold a conditional or unconditional offer. You will instantly receive an email to confirm that your request has been received and to explain the next steps in the process. The first date that accommodation requests for 2025/26 will be accepted is Monday, 7 April 2025.

FINALISE YOUR BOOKING

Within a few days of submitting your request you will be contacted by your chosen accommodation provider by email. You must follow their instructions in order to finalise the booking of your room. If you hold a conditional offerfrom LJMU and are unsuccessful, any payment made for accommodation will be refunded and your tenancy agreement cancelled. You can contact our Accommodation Office at any time for advice and guidance.

ACCOMMODATION FOR MOUNT PLEASANT STUDENTS

Mount Pleasant Campus is home to the Faculty of Society and Culture

The following accommodation options are ideal for students undertaking courses in the Mount Pleasant Campus.

Limelight is the newest hall available as it only fully opened in 2024. It offers premium en-suite accommodation with extensive communal facilities and great views across the city.

Albert Court and Prospect Point are two excellent value, en-suite options which are suitable for students at either campus. Many rooms at Albert Court were upgraded in summer 2022 and now feature small double beds. Rooms at Prospect Point are larger than in many other halls.

Agnes Jones House and St Andrew’s Gardens are excellent choices for students seeking good value accommodation because they both feature flats with shared bathrooms.

Grand Central is one of the liveliest of all the accommodation options, with two en-suite room options available.

Copperas House is one of the newest options available, as it opened in summer 2021. It is well located close to the Student Life Building and LJMU Sport Building and is suitable for students at either campus.

St Luke’s View is an excellent option for students located in the Mount Pleasant Campus, with large flats and a private courtyard space.

Horizon Heights and Hardman House are two modern options in this campus. All rooms at both sites feature en-suite bathrooms.

Grenville Street and The Arch are two contemporary options, located close to the vibrant student nightlife area and the shops and amenities of Liverpool One. Both halls have larger rooms than many others within the campus and hence they represent excellent value.

ACCOMMODATION FOR CITY CAMPUS STUDENTS

The City Campus is home to the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science

The following accommodation options are ideal for students undertaking courses in City Campus.

Marybone is a large, three phase complex and is ideally located adjacent to the Avril Robarts Library and the Tithebarn Street Building. Marybone 1 features flats with shared bathrooms and double beds at very reasonable rents. Marybone 2 and 3 are almost identical and are fully en-suite.

Ablett House, Glassworks and Byrom Point are three newer accommodation sites located within the City Campus and are fully ensuite. They each have a common room and study area to meet and socialise with other residents.

Atlantic Point is an excellent value en-suite option, located opposite the Byrom Street teaching buildings. It is one of the largest sites offered to new students and has a limited number of parking spaces.

Students based in the City Campus can also choose accommodation located in the centre of the city such as Albert Court, Copperas House, Grand Central, Horizon Heights, Limelight or Prospect Point.
