I wanted to move away for university, but I wanted it to be easy to get back home if I needed to. Liverpool seemed like the perfect city with great travel links to Belfast.

TRAVELLING TO LIVERPOOL FROM NORTHERN IRELAND

Liverpool is easily accessible, whether you choose to fly or take the ferry.

There are numerous daily and weekly flights departing from both Belfast City and Belfast International Airports, and City of Derry Airport - we are only a 30-minute flight away.

When you land at Liverpool John Lennon Airport you can jump on a bus outside the airport terminal. This takes you directly to the city centre in just 20 minutes. Visit the airport website for further details: liverpoolairport.com

If you arrive by ferry, you will disembark at Birkenhead Ferry Port (Twelve Quays Ferry Terminal, Birkenhead CH41 1FE) which is on the Wirral peninsula. If you are travelling by car it will then take just 10 minutes to reach Liverpool city centre from Birkenhead, travelling through either one of the two Mersey tunnels. If you are a foot passenger, Hamilton Square railway station is a 15 minute walk away from the ferry terminal, allowing you to complete your journey to Liverpool city centre in just 5 minutes by train. Taxis are also widely available.

Maya travelled from Belfast to Liverpool to join Liverpool John Moores University

At Liverpool John Moores University we welcome almost 2000* students from Northern Ireland, making us the most popular university in Great Britain for students from Northern Ireland.*

Moving away from home to study is an adventure. It’s an opportunity to gain experience, independence and a new perspective - but don’t just take our word for it!

Throughout this handbook you will meet some of our students from Northern Ireland who have made LJMU their home.

Some of them also appear in this video, which we recommend you watch as they talk about their experiences so far at LJMU, and what it is like to move away from home to study.

NORTHERN IRELAND

APPLICANT DAYS

BELFAST, SATURDAY 22 MARCH 2025

MORNING EVENT: 9:30am-12:30pm

AFTERNOON EVENT: 2:00pm -5:00pm

We appreciate that travelling to one of our Applicant Days in Liverpool is not always feasible, so we also give you the opportunity to attend an event closer to home, to discover why we are the most popular university in Great Britain for students from Northern Ireland.

You don’t need to commit to spending the whole day with us. Simply choose to attend either the morning or the afternoon event. Both events are identical, so you only need to choose the one most convenient to you.

These events present a fantastic opportunity for you to discuss your chosen course with academic staff and much, much more.

I chose LJMU after I attended the Applicant Day in Belfast, and found that it was really homely and felt a friendly atmosphere coming from the staff and students I spoke to there. I also chose LJMU as it has more students from Northern Ireland than any other university so it was going to be a home from home for me.

Andrew from County Down BSc (Hons) Computer Science

The effort LJMU puts in to organising an event in Northern Ireland, simply shows their commitment and dedication to the students, which is really appreciated. Thank you!

YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO FEES AND FUNDING

@ moneyadvice@ljmu.ac.uk @LJMUSaw

We want you to start your university experience with LJMU as you mean to go on: equipped with all the information you need and fully supported. That’s why our dedicated team of friendly, expert advisers have put together essential guidance relating to student funding.

We have covered the key facts and figures but if you have any questions, please just ask.

TUITION FEES AND LOANS

You will be charged a tuition fee for each year of your course. Tuition fees for courses commencing in the 2025/26 academic year are £9,535 per year*. The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees in accordance with any changes to the maximum allowable fees set by the UK Parliament. In the event of such a change, any fee increase will be subject to a maximum cap of 10% of the total course cost as originally stated at the time of your offer. For further details or queries, please contact our general Course Enquiries team on 0151 231 5090.

There is no need to pay your tuition fees up front as eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan for each year of their course. This loan is not means tested which means your household income will not affect your eligibility.

Your tuition fee loan will cover all of your tuition fee costs and will be paid direct to LJMU. See page 54 for information on loan repayments

*For some degrees with foundation year commencing in 2025/26, the fee for the foundation first year will differ from the fee for the second and subsequent years. Please refer to the relevant course page on ljmu. ac.uk for details of the fees for the course. The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees in accordance with any changes to the maximum allowable fees set by the UK Parliament. In the event of such a change, any fee increase will be subject to a maximum cap of 10% of the total course cost as originally stated at the time of your offer.

NORTHERN IRELAND APPLICANTS

If your permanent home is in Northern Ireland and you want to study at LJMU (or another English university) you will be eligible to apply for:

• Tuition fee loan which will cover the full cost of your tuition fees

• Maintenance loan up to £6,776 a year

• Maintenance grant up to £3,475 a year

If you take out a student loan, your repayments will begin after you have left LJMU and start earning more than £24,990.

See studentfinanceni.co.uk for more information.

EU APPLICANTS

From the 2021/22 academic year, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals and their family members will no longer be eligible for home fee status or student finance. If you would like to discuss you individual circumstances then get in touch with the Student Money Advice Team at LJMU.

For more information see www.gov.uk/studentfinance

These figures are correct at the time of publishing. For the latest information visit: ljmu.ac.uk/fees-and-funding

All figures in this booklet relate to the 2024/5 academic year unless otherwise stated as figures for 2025/6 were unavailable at the time of printing.

The amount of funding you will receive for your living costs varies depending on where in the UK you normally live, your household income and if you are living in your parental home or elsewhere while studying. Please only use this information as a guide, more detailed information is available here:

studentfinanceni.co.uk

STUDENT LOANS FOR LIVING COSTS (MAINTENANCE LOAN)

In addition to a tuition fee loan, you can also apply for money to help towards your living costs. The amount you will be eligible to receive depends on a number of factors such as your household income and where you live during term time. As you will see in the table below, you may be entitled to both the Maintenance Loan in addition to the non-repayable Maintenance Grant.

n In 2024/5 the maximum amount you will be eligible to receive while studying at LJMU is up to £8,136. You may also qualify for the £500 per year LJMU bursary if your household income is £25,000 per year, or less.

n Unlike the tuition fee loan which is paid direct to LJMU, this money will be paid into your bank account. It’s paid in three installments and it’s up to you how it is spent – and also how you budget!

You will pay for your accommodation on dates that coincide with your student maintenance payments, making it easier for you to plan your budget

TIP: Once you have paid your rent, work out how many weeks until your next loan and grant payment and then you will know approximately how much per week you have to live off.

STUDENTS AND BENEFITS

The majority of full-time students are not eligible for benefits while they are studying.

Exceptions to this are:

• lone parents with a dependent child/children. The age of your children can affect which benefits you are eligible for

• students with disabilities or ongoing health conditions

• students who are pensioners

• student couples with at least one dependent child

• students who have suspended their studies due to ill health or caring responsibilities

If you need advice about which benefits to claim or what counts as income for benefit purposes then please contact us.

HOW HOUSEHOLD INCOME AFFECTS STUDENT FUNDING

Some student funding is only allocated following an assessment of your household income (see table below for approximate figures). This process is called income assessment (or means testing) and if you are under 25 this is normally based on the income of your parents.

• If your parents are divorced/separated, the income of the parent you live with most of the time will be used

• If your parent cohabits or has remarried, the joint income will be assessed

• If you meet one of the following criteria you will be treated as independent from your parents and their income:

• You are 25 or over on the 1st Sept 2025

• Are married or in a civil relationship (but they will look at the income of your partner)

• Have a dependent child

• Have supported yourself financially for 3 years on 1st September 2025

• If you have been in local authority care for 3 months before your 16th birthday (see page 57)

• If you are estranged from your family (see page 57)

*You do not have to apply for the LJMU bursary.

NB. Figures for students from Northern Ireland for 2024 entry.

APPLYING FOR YOUR STUDENT FUNDING

LOAN REPAYMENTS

Any loans you take out to cover your tuition fees or living costs will be added together into a single loan account. This means that when you start paying back your student loans, you will only make one affordable monthly payment. Your repayment amount is always based on a percentage of your salary, not how much you have borrowed.

If your income is over £24,990* your employer will start taking repayments from your salary just like tax and national insurance, and after 25 years any money still owed is written off.

The table opposite will give you an idea of what your repayments might look like once you have left university and you’re earning over £24,990.*

*Northern Ireland repayment threshold 2023/24 figures Apply online studentfinanceni.co.uk from March 2025 if you are starting a course in September 2025

OPENING A STUDENT BANK ACCOUNT

Shop around for the best bank account for you and, if this is a bank near home, make sure you know how to access the account remotely. It is a good idea to set up online banking so you are in control of your money while you are at university. Make sure you do this before you move away to start your course.

• If your income falls below the repayment threshold (e.g. if you go travelling) your loan repayments will automatically stop

• After 25 years anything you owe on your student loans is written off

Most students say that the interest free overdraft is the most useful thing about their student bank account. There may be times in the year you need this. You can pay it back over the summer if you are working and then use it again in years two and three if you need to.

You will normally need to download your acceptance letter from UCAS after confirmation in order to open a student account with the bank.

SCAN AND

HAVE YOU STUDIED BEFORE

If you have not studied at university before, student funding is generally available for the length of your course, plus an additional year (if required). Additional funding may be available for students that have had to leave a course due to health problems or for other personal reasons.

It is really important that you seek advice if you have studied previously. We can clarify exactly how your prior study will impact on your future entitlement and advise you on what steps to take to maximise any funding available.

LJMU BURSARY

LJMU bursaries are automatically paid to eligible students every year of your course – you do not need to apply. The annual LJMU bursary is currently £500.

LJMU bursaries are additional, free money that you don’t have to pay back. How you spend it is up to you.

To qualify you must meet the residence requirements for student funding (grants and loans) and have a household income of £25,000/year or less. You must also be paying the annual maximum university tuition fee which is £9,535 for 2025/6.

STUDENT SUPPORT FUND

Sometimes despite your best efforts you can find yourself in financial difficulty. This could be due to a delay in funding or unforeseen circumstances.

LJMU’s Student Support Fund is available to students who find themselves in such a position. Last year we helped over 2500 students with support.

At LJMU this relates to applicants for Nursing (Adult, Child, Mental Health), Midwifery and Paramedic Science programmes. This financial support is in addition to your funding from Student Finance NI.

• A training grant of £5,000 per year: this grant is not means tested and all eligible students will receive this grant

• Parental support of £2,000 per year: this grant is not means tested. However, to be eligible to apply you have at least one dependent child under 15 years, or under 17

years if registered with special educational needs

• A specialist subject payment of £1,000 per year: this is for students studying on courses where the government have shortages. At LJMU this is currently mental health nursing

• Travel and dual accommodation: this is to help with additional costs of traveling to and remaining in placement

• Exceptional Support Fund: this is for students who find themselves in exceptional hardship

Payments will be made to eligible students over the year with the first payment being made in November (for autumn start courses).

DISABLED STUDENTS ALLOWANCE (DSA) STUDENTS WITH DEPENDANTS

If you declare a disability or medical condition to LJMU, you can access specialist support and guidance to assist you during your studies. This support can include, exam and study support, mental health support, ASC support, library support, mobility support and more. Please contact us for further information if you are unsure you are eligible or do not know what support you will need.

The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is designed to help meet the extra course costs students can face as a direct result of a disability, ongoing health condition, mental health condition or Specific Learning Difficulty. DSA is paid on top of the standard student finance package and does not have to be paid back.

You should apply for DSA when you apply for your student funding - please don’t wait. Don’t worry if you’re not 100% certain which course you will be studying, as just like your application for student finance it is possible to update your DSA application at a later date.

The Disability Advice Team at LJMU can help with all aspects of applying for DSA so please feel free to contact us at any point during the application process for help or advice.

If you have either an adult who is financially dependent on you or dependant children, you can apply for additional funding including a grant for childcare.

In addition, if you have an underlying eligibility for benefits (such as a lone parent) you can receive a higher rate of maintenance loan for living costs.

A Childcare Grant will cover up to 85% of approved or accredited childcare in both term time and holidays.

The Adult Dependants’ Grant is for students with a dependant partner and Parents Learning Allowance is a grant for those with children.

All grants are means tested on your household income. For more information please contact us.

• Careers and employability support

• Opportunities to meet other care experienced and estranged students in the LJMU community

LJMU was awarded the NNECL Quality Mark in Spring 2022 in recognition of the enhanced support we offer care experienced students throughout their time at the University. We were also one of the first universities in the country to take the StandAlone Pledge, committing to support students who are estranged studying in higher education.

YOUNG ADULT CARERS

LJMU is committed to supporting young adult carers and currently works in partnership with Barnardos Young Adult Carers Service in Liverpool. Our dedicated member of staff for young adult carers can provide you with further information and advise you on what support is available.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We believe everyone is good at something, and want to reward your success

Every year we award a range of scholarships to support students from a range of backgrounds. These pages give you an introduction of what scholarships you can apply for if you study at the Liverpool John Moores University.

Whether it’s a new laptop, help with accommodation costs or learning how to drive – how you spend your scholarship money is up to you. We don’t just award our scholarships to straight A students either (though academic ability is important); we are also interested in awarding scholarships to students who can show us that they are hardworking, passionate about something and a success at what they do. So what are you waiting for?

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Rewards academic excellence (at least 3 A grades at A2 or equivalent – 144 UCAS points) £1,000 per year for the duration of your course.

SIR BERT MASSIE SCHOLARSHIP

Recognising Sir Bert Massie, national disability rights champion and former student of LJMU. We are looking to award an outstanding disabled student who has campaigned or championed inclusion in some way.

COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

For participation in areas such as volunteering, sports, the arts or citizenship; awards of £1,000 per year for the duration of your course.

OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

The aim of the Opportunity Scholarship is to enhance diversity, supporting access, participation and outcomes of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who come to LJMU.

It would be expected that applicants have participated fully in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach programmes to be eligible and applicants must meet ethnically diverse criteria to apply.

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP

The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship has been introduced to recognise the diverse and inspiring nature of the LJMU student community. These high profile scholarships have been developed to reward the success of students that may have had a different and sometimes longer path into Higher Education or have overcome adversity in some way. So, if you are a care leaver, a young adult carer, disabled, (however, see Sir Bert Massie Scholarship), Black and Asian Minority Ethnic or a mature student, we would love to hear from you.

I always had an idea about wanting to go to a university outside of Northern Ireland, as I knew this would allow me to become more independent and open up a lot more opportunities. It was from the day I attended the LJMU applicant day in Belfast, where LJMU became my first choice of university I wanted to study at.

They had so much to offer academically, as well as giving me the chance to combine my studies with my sporting life; which was an extra bonus.

Rebecca was awarded the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship and studies BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science

RIO

Student Living Assistant

For me, living in student accommodation is a great way to move out for the first time and have your first real taste of independence. All your bills are included, which takes away the hassle, plus you get to meet so many people from different courses and backgrounds. I love the hustle and bustle of being in the city centre; there is always something to do on your doorstep! My advice for new students:

1

Be friendly with your flat mates and share certain foods, bread, salt, etc. so you don’t let food go to waste.

2 3

Clean as you go - it keeps mess to a minimum and makes your job easier.

Don’t suffer in silence - if you are struggling with anything talk to someone. The staff on reception or our friendly Student Living Assistants are there to help.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BOOKING YOUR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

CONTRACTS

Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found.

Tenancies commence on Saturday 13 September 2025 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 3 July 2026. Induction week for new students starts on 15 September and teaching begins on Monday 22 September 2025.

It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year – for example Midwifery – you will be given a full calendar year tenancy as standard. Don’t forget that you

don’t have to move out over the Christmas and Easter breaks, the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year in all cases.

MONEY MATTERS

Rent is paid in three equal instalments that coincide with your student funding payments if you are a UK student, who can provide a guarantor*, so it is important that you apply for your student funding as soon as possible – don’t put this off! It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford.

*Your guarantor will most likely be a parent or guardian, and they must agree to act in this capacity

If you have any concerns about money and student accommodation, please contact our Accommodation Office: accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk

MATURE STUDENTS

The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations.

If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation.

HEALTHCARE STUDENTS

Nursing, midwifery and paramedic students have different schedules due to placement work, often getting up when other students are going to bed! For this reason we strongly recommend healthcare students choose Atlantic Point, Glassworks, Marybone 1 or Marybone 3 and share their flat with students on similar courses.

Limited parking is available for students at Atlantic Point.

DISABLED STUDENTS

Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. We can also arrange for you to visit our accommodation to check that it will meet your needs. To discuss further contact our Disability Advice Team. disability@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 3164/3165

Don’t forget, booking your room via the LJMU Accommodation Office is the only way to be sure of living with other new LJMU students.
