Career Insight: BSc (Hons) Maritime Business & Management

Introduction Over the past few years there has been an increasing emphasis on transport and logistics in the UK and particularly in Liverpool with developments at the Port. A new in-river deep water container terminal has been built as part of a £300 investment programme to expand and develop the Port of Liverpool’s operations. The new development will enable the Port to accommodate 95% of the global container vessels. The benefits of the scheme will be felt around the North West as the 70 mile radius around Liverpool has the largest volume and density of large warehousing of any UK region, encapsulating 28% of the UK’s large warehousing. The skills provided on this degree will enable graduates to move into both maritime and more general business management roles and as a result it is important to start planning for your career early and explore opportunities to gain work experience and attending network events to gain an insight into the industry. You should also consider setting up a LinkedIn profile and following relevant organisations and jobs boards through Twitter. Many employers use social media to post work experience opportunities so take advantage of using the site to help you make links and find out more about what opportunities are out there.

Career options: Graduates from the course have a variety of opportunities available to them working as marine underwriters, shipping business analysts, trainee shipbrokers, trainee ship managers and trainee maritime lawyers in addition to roles within freight forwarding, shipping companies and port terminal operations in countries around the world. Recent graduates have secured employment in companies such as Bibby Line, P&O, Irish Ferries, Peel Ports, London P & I, Dynamar B.V., MacAndrews, Maersk Line, Norbulk Shipping, RV Shipping and EMR (European Metal Recycling). A selection of possible opportunities can be found below. Some of this information is taken from the Prospects website and both Prospects and TargetJobs have a detailed overview of the Transport and Logistics sector - www.prospects.ac.uk/jobs-and-work-experience/job-sectors/transport-andlogistics and https://targetjobs.co.uk/career-sectors/logistics-transport-and-supply-chain Trainee Shipbroker – A shipbroker acts as an intermediary between the owner of a ship and the person who wishes to have their goods freighted by ship. A broker also deals with the finer details when it comes to the buying and selling of ships, ensuring bother the buyer and the seller are awarded a fair price. The legal aspects of drawing up contracts ensure many shipbrokers gain legal qualifications during the course of their career. Increasingly shipbrokers also provide their clients with a wide range of market intelligence and advice. Freight forwarder – You will act on behalf of importers, exporters or other companies to organise the safe, efficient and cost–effective transportation of goods. You could be acting

as the agent or providing the transportation service directly. Most freight is handled by third-party logistics (3PL) companies rather than by individual companies managing their own logistics departments. Freight forwarding companies have diversified to also offer warehousing, sorting and packaging operations. Marine underwriter – Insurance underwriters decide if applications for insurance cover (risk) should be accepted and, if so, what the terms of that acceptance are. They assess a risk according to the likelihood of a claim being made by weighing up a number of factors and asking for detailed information from prospective clients (policyholders). The aim is to minimise losses for the company to help to make a profit. Logistics and Distribution Manager – This role involved organising the storage and distribution of goods, ensuring the right products are delivered to the right location on time and at a good cost. You will be using IT systems to manage stock levels and transportation and managing staff and other resources effectively. There are also a number of opportunities available to all graduates, regardless of course of study, so there may be other job options available to you, for example, based on previous work or voluntary experience, skills and interests. To explore job options by sector, check www.prospects.ac.uk/types_of_jobs.htm. You can also use career planning tools like www.prospects.ac.uk/myprospects_planner_login.htm and http://targetjobs.co.uk/careersreport to generate initial career ideas.

Postgraduate Study Graduates have also progressed on to postgraduate courses which can provide the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of transport and management. A new Postgraduate student loan was introduced for the 2016/17 academic year to support students considering this option. LJMU graduates can also receive a 20% discount on tuition fees for Postgraduate study at LJMU.

Possible employers You will find roles in an extremely wide range of employers including 3PLs, consultancies, rail, airlines, shipping lines and agents, warehousing, freight, manufacturing, retail and postal services. Some examples can be found below although a number of these can provide services across a number of sectors. Your Careers Adviser, Andy Byrne, also has a list of employers who offer opportunities for maritime and transport and logistics students. 

Sources of work experience As part of the Maritime Business & Management degree programme you will have the opportunity to complete a work placement. Gaining work experience or an insight into the maritime sector is really important for your future career so you should definitely consider this option. The websites listed previously should be your first port of call when researching possible placement opportunities and your Careers Adviser, Andy Byrne, may have additional examples of possible employers who offer these opportunities. experience through a more creative approach. Contacting companies directly through networking events, via email or through LinkedIn may lead to work experience. It is important to demonstrate that you are interested in the company and have spent some time researching what they do. Even when applying to secure work experience for the first time in this industry, show the employer what you have to offer. Briefly outline the relevancy of your course. Look at the skills outlined above and try to discuss these in your CV, drawing on examples from your course and other work experience or extra-curricular activities to demonstrate these skills. LJMU has also been facilitating a summer internship programme for Level 5 students in recent years, so keep an eye on your LJMU inbox for details of any opportunities. Useful websites to research a range of voluntary opportunities include www.do-it.org.uk/ and www.volunteeringliverpool.org.uk/. You could also contact LJMU Volunteering Manager Chris Prescott on 0151 904 6356 or c.j.prescott@ljmu.ac.uk to enquire about current opportunities. It is also worth researching relevant organisations/charities and contacting them directly to find out about voluntary roles on offer.

Recruitment schedules Many recruiters begin the graduate recruitment process during the autumn term for final year students. Some placements are advertised then as well. Closing dates can be as early as November and December for large employers so it is important to start researching companies that you want to apply to early on. The application process for graduate training schemes usually involves completing an online application form, which may require you to answer ‘competency based questions’. This may be followed by psychometric tests, a telephone/video interview and an assessment centre. You may also need to submit your CV. You may also find work through small or medium sized enterprises/businesses (SMEs) who make up a significant proportion of the maritime and wider logistics sectors. Often these companies don’t usually have structured training schemes but will recruit ‘as required’. These positions will be advertised on company websites, relevant recruitment websites and national and local newspapers. The ‘creative’ approach to job hunting, outlined above, is also important when looking for graduate roles. Making contacts and approaching organisations speculatively to look for work is a common route into employment. For more information about the speculative approach to job hunting, download a copy of our guide to ‘The Hidden Jobs Market’ from https://www2.ljmu.ac.uk/worldofwork/123871.htm. You can get advice about the recruitment process by booking a one-to-one appointment with a Careers or Employability Adviser or you can attend workshops run by the Careers Team.
