Career Insight: BSc (Hons) Nautical Science
Introduction This course is accredited by the Merchant Navy Training Board and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency as meeting the international and UK standards for deck officer training. Further training and 12 months experience at sea will enable you to achieve the Officer of the Watch certificate which is the minimum international qualification to work as a deck officer in charge of the navigational watch on a commercial vessel anywhere in the world. The combination of sea experience and academic qualifications is also in demand in many shore-based careers such as ship management, marine surveying, pilotage, marine insurance and maritime business.
Career options: Graduates from the course have secured a variety of Deck Officer roles at companies such as Holland America Cruise Liners, Shell, Princess Cruises, British Antarctic Survey, Maersk, Hanson Marine, Charterworld, Croisieres de France and Royal Navy. A selection of possible opportunities, both sea-based and shore-based, can be found below. For those students interested in shorebased roles both the Prospects and TargetJobs websites have a detailed overview of the Transport and Logistics sector - www.prospects.ac.uk/jobs-and-work-experience/job-sectors/transport-andlogistics and https://targetjobs.co.uk/career-sectors/logistics-transport-and-supply-chain Deck (Navigation) Officer – For the majority of students securing this role would have been the reason for completing a Nautical Science degree and opportunities exist across the commercial shipping industry – ferries and cruise ships; cargo container ships, oil, gas and chemical tankers; and, specialist support and rescue vessels. The role is a combination of hands-on practical tasks and manging staff and operations. Officers are responsible for navigating the vessel, checking weather and other communication systems, loading the ship safely, managing the care and safety of passengers and crew and maintaining legal and operational records. Trainee Shipbroker – A shipbroker acts as an intermediary between the owner of a ship and the person who wishes to have their goods freighted by ship. A broker also deals with the finer details when it comes to the buying and selling of ships, ensuring bother the buyer and the seller are awarded a fair price. The legal aspects of drawing up contracts ensure many shipbrokers gain legal qualifications during the course of their career. Increasingly shipbrokers also provide their clients with a wide range of market intelligence and advice. Freight forwarder – You will act on behalf of importers, exporters or other companies to organise the safe, efficient and cost–effective transportation of goods. You could be acting as the agent or providing the transportation service directly. Most freight is handled by third-party logistics (3PL) companies rather than by individual companies managing their own logistics departments. Freight forwarding companies have diversified to also offer warehousing, sorting and packaging operations.

Marine underwriter – Insurance underwriters decide if applications for insurance cover (risk) should be accepted and, if so, what the terms of that acceptance are. They assess a risk according to the likelihood of a claim being made by weighing up a number of factors and asking for detailed information from prospective clients (policyholders). The aim is to minimise losses for the company to help to make a profit. There are also a number of opportunities available to all graduates, regardless of course of study, so there may be other job options available to you, for example, based on previous work or voluntary experience, skills and interests. To explore job options by sector, check www.prospects.ac.uk/types_of_jobs.htm. You can also use career planning tools like www.prospects.ac.uk/myprospects_planner_login.htm and http://targetjobs.co.uk/careersreport to generate initial career ideas.
Employers Whilst some larger companies offer both sea-based and shore-based roles the majority will focus on one or the other. The major shipping lines will either recruit crew directly or via an agency and if you have a specific company in mind it is worthwhile exploring how they recruit before entering the final year of your studies. For shore-based roles you will find opportunities in an extremely wide range of employers including third party logistics (3PLs), consultancies, rail, airlines, shipping lines and agents, warehousing, freight, manufacturing, retail and postal services. Some examples can be found below and your Careers Adviser, Andy Byrne, will also have information on employers who offer opportunities within the maritime and transport and logistics sectors.

Recruitment schedules For sea-based roles companies may offer cadet training schemes and so it is important to research possible opportunities before you complete your studies. There are also a number of specialist recruitment agencies, some of which are listed above, who advertises deck officer vacancies as and when they arise. For shore-based roles within maritime or the wider transport and logistics sector there can be graduate training schemes available with large companies and the graduate recruitment process begins during the autumn term for final year students. Closing dates can be as early as November and December for large employers so it is important to start researching companies that you want to apply to early on. The application process for graduate training schemes usually involves completing an online application form, which may require you to answer ‘competency based questions’. This may be followed by psychometric tests, a telephone/video interview and an assessment centre. You may also need to submit your CV. You may also find work through small or medium sized enterprises/businesses (SMEs) who make up a significant proportion of the maritime and wider logistics sectors. Often these companies don’t usually have structured training schemes but will recruit ‘as required’. These positions will be advertised on company websites, relevant recruitment websites and national and local newspapers. The ‘creative’ approach to job hunting, outlined above, is
