ONE FAMILY SPECIALISING IN FINE FURNITURE SINCE 1866

A specially commissioned oil painting on canvas interpreting "Scotland Forever!" by Lady Butler. Scotland Forever! depicts the start of the charge of the Royal Scots Greys at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The horses which dominate the picture are the heavy grey mounts used by the regiment throughout its history until mechanization. The original painting was exhibited at the Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly in 1881. It is now housed at the Leeds Art Gallery, having been one of its earliest acquisitions, a gift from Colonel Thomas Walter Harding in 1888. The image was used during the First World War by both the British and the Germans in their propaganda material. The painting has been stretched and mounted in a hand-made bespoke 3.5" frame in metal leaf finish. £4,105 Width: 66¾ inches (151.5cm) | Depth: 2¾ inches (7cm) | Height: 36 inches (92cm)

Meet Our Experts

Rarely seen without a fishing rod in the boot of his car, our Head of Residential in Scotland brings over 17 years of knowledge and an appreciation for both the old style and emerging tools into the role.

Cameron Ewer Head of Residential, Savills Scotland

I arrived in this industry perhaps more by luck than design but quite honestly, I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I finished University on a Friday and started with Savills the following Monday - and haven’t looked back. The first house I saw overlooked the 18th Green on the Old Course at St Andrews. Since then, properties have ranged from fishermen’s cottages in Fife, family homes in Glasgow’s West End, to stunning country houses set in multiple acres. Any day of the week I could be travelling up and down the west coast utilising the full range of my experience and enjoying the incredible Scottish coastline. It’s an exceptionally busy market: there are now three times as many buyers per properties available as there were in 2019*. The affordability of Scotland has driven interest and the lifestyle is unbeatable: alongside great schools and good infrastructure, within an hour you can be on the coast, beside a loch or walking in breath-taking glens. To find out more about the market in Scotland, watch my video update: http://sav.li/meetourexperts

Majestic Scotland Peace, grandeur and productive lifestyles are all to be had north of the border, as offered by several excellent estates An idyllic family home, as well as a top farming and sporting estate, Ardhuncart, Aberdeenshire, has 903 acres. £2.95m for the whole

R

OBERT MCCULLOCH of Strutt & Parker attributes the recent surge in demand from English buyers for Scottish country properties of all shapes and sizes to three main factors: firstly, a reaction to the Covid pandemic among buyers from congested parts of the UK seeking more space in a picturesque and sparsely populated landscape; secondly, a greater awareness of the threat posed by climate change, which has boosted demand for environmental investment opportunities; thirdly, a more relaxed attitude among purchasers of large landed estates to the question of Scottish independence now that Britain has left the EU. Reflecting the broad spectrum of purchasers seeking to buy north of the Border, Strutt & Parker (0131–226 2500) are offering the tranquil, 903-acre, Ardhuncart residential, farming and sporting estate in the Don valley,

seven miles from the village of Alford and 31 miles from Aberdeen airport, for sale in nine lots on behalf of the estate’s trustees. Prices range from ‘offers over £50,000’ for a redundant range of farm buildings with development potential, to ‘offers over £2.95 million’ for the mixed-use estate as a whole. Closing date for bids is noon on September 7. Ardhuncart is for sale for the first time since 1952, when Col Harold Phillips bought the estate that straddles the River Don in the foothills of the Grampians as a summer retreat for his wife, Georgina (later Lady Kennard), and their five children. For the Phillips family, Ardhuncart was a muchloved holiday home, where they fished for salmon and sea trout, shot grouse on the Ardhuncart moor, played tennis and hosted parties at Ardhuncart Lodge, a manageable, 5,400sq ft, nine-bedroom country house built

in the Arts-and-Crafts style in 1901. Ardhuncart remained Lady Kennard’s country home until her death, aged 91, in 2011. If ‘the good life’ appeals, you can find it in Sutherland, where Rod Christie of Galbraith in Inverness (01463 224343) proposes the pristine, 937-acre Challenger estate, two miles from the Highland village of Lairg and 49 miles from Inverness, of which he says, ‘although the main focus in recent years has been on conservation, there is significant potential to further develop the forestry, upland livestock farming, natural capital and, indeed, the residential properties on the estate’. The estate comes with superb trout fishing on Lochs Craggie and Dola, together with permanent pasture and more than 700 acres of hill grazing. The land rises to about 1,000ft above sea level at the summit of Meall Dola, with dramatic views towards the peaks

Find the best properties at countrylife.co.uk of Ben Klibreck, Ben Hope and Ben More Assynt. Some 42 acres of native woodland, primarily birch, have been managed to encourage regeneration over the past 20 years and the rest of the land offers significant woodland planting potential, the agents suggest. The residential element of the estate is equally uncomplicated, comprising a 2,549sq ft, three-bedroom main lodge, a neat, timberframe, 1990s building with harled block walls under a pitched slate roof. Close by is The Bothy, a single-storey, tin-clad structure with two reception rooms, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. Both houses are powered by a wind turbine located behind Challenger Lodge. At the westernmost point of the estate stands a two-bedroom farmhouse erected in 2004, which could be bought with a farm building and 9½ acres of land for £300,000; the estate as a whole is on offer at £1.7m.

The idyll that is Castleton is completed by its 23-acre island, majestic Eilean Mor If the dream is an active sporting lifestyle with total privacy, the Castleton estate on Loch Fyne, Argyll, on Scotland’s wild west coast, could be just the ticket at ‘offers over £1.95m’ through Knight Frank (0131–222 9600). The picturesque, 68-acre estate stands on the northern shore of Loch Fyne, 2½ miles from the coastal town of Lochgilphead and 39 miles south of Oban, the main commercial centre for north Argyll and the Inner Hebrides. Castleton offers walking, cycling, sailing, wild swimming, kayaking, horse riding and golf all on the doorstep, with boating on the estate itself, via its own private boathouse and pier with 230 yards of foreshore frontage to Loch Fyne; for serious sailors, nearby Crinan harbour offers sheltered yacht moorings. The area is renowned for its rare and abundant wildlife, with whales, dolphins and basking sharks regular offshore visitors in the summer months, and the nearby Knapdale Forest has been home to beavers since 2009. Castleton itself welcomes red squirrels, otters, deer and a wide variety of birdlife; sightings of sea eagles are always a source of wonder. At the heart of the estate, surrounded by mature formal gardens and woodland, stands Category C-listed Castleton House, described by Historic Scotland as ‘a large, well-detailed mid-19th-century dwelling that has been extended in stages. Built in about 1830, it incorporates an earlier, probably 18th-century

Top: The 937-acre Challenger estate, Sutherland. £1.7m. Above: Castleton, Argyll. £1.95m building, possibly the home of one of the Duke of Argyll’s tacksmen. The two-storey gabled wing added in 1875 by renowned architects Dick Peddie and Kinnear is particularly fine [and] the distinguished Scots-Baronial wing of 2000 by Crerar and Partners utilises elements drawn from earlier parts of the house’. The house was once part of the GrahamCampbell family’s Shirvan estate, where copper ore was mined between 1862 and 1910. The earliest part of the house, which features a stone tablet initialled J. G. C. and dated 1875, was added by John Graham-Campbell. Approached by two tree-lined driveways, the house provides 9,235sq ft of luxurious accommodation on three floors, including five reception rooms, nine bedrooms, six bathrooms and a swimming pool. Worthy of special mention are the majestic drawing room (the former ballroom) with its trompe

l’oeil ceiling, panelled billiards room, and oak-panelled library on the first floor. The principal bedroom suite has a terrace with views over the gardens to Loch Fyne. The gardens at Castleton are an outstanding feature of the estate. To the front of the house, they include extensive lawns with herbaceous borders flanked by mixed mature woodland; to the north, a large walled garden conceals a kitchen garden, an orchard and a tennis court. To the north of the main driveway is a separate block of mainly sitka spruce planted in 1995 and some native woodland, some 28 acres in all. The idyll that is Castleton is completed by its own 23-acre island, majestic Eilean Mor, sitting opposite the foreshore of the estate between Glac Mhor Bay and Loch Fyne; access at low tide is on foot or via a short boat-ride from the slipway. In the 1800s, there was 105

Bonnie Prince Charlie landed at and left from Arisaig House, Inverness-shire. £2.25m

a working croft on the island and a thriving herring fishing community in Castleton Bay. The remains of the croft buildings and the herring-boat piers can still be seen, although, for now, the only occupants of the island are the resident herons. But perhaps not forever, given that a site at the southern end of the island has rare planning consent for a singlestorey, one-bedroom stone and slate house, the foundations for which were laid in 2015. Not only is the consent still active, but a licence is in place from the Crown Estate to reinstate the island’s pier and pontoon. Still on the romantic west coast, imposing Arisaig House, near the village of that name, 26 miles west of Fort William and eight miles from the fishing port of Mallaig, is steeped in history, both Scottish and English. It was here, on Prince’s Beach in front of the house, that Bonnie Prince Charlie, Prince Charles Edward Stewart, first set foot on the British mainland. Reputedly, it was in a cave nearby that he hid after defeat at Culloden, before escaping to Skye and then to exile in France. In the Second World War, the remoteness of the house and the rugged nature of the surrounding countryside was deemed ideal for special operations training and, in 1941, Arisaig House was requisitioned by the British Army as the base for the Special Operations Executive, an elite corps of undercover agents operating in occupied Europe that was Winston Churchill’s brainchild. Another reason why English buyers may be drawn to Arisaig House is that the original house was built in 1864 to a picturesque design by the celebrated English architect, Philip Webb, who envisaged a large country house with the main rooms looking towards Loch Nan Uamh and the Moidart coast. Work started in 1863 and included the Gardener’s

Bothy, now the five-bedroom Orchard House. The old main house was largely burnt down in the mid 1930s, but rebuilt a few years later. Currently for sale through Savills in Glasgow (0141–222 5896) and Rettie & Co in Edinburgh (0131–220 4160) for ‘offers over £2.25m’, Arisaig House stands in more than 18 acres of gardens and wooded policies, with access to the sea via a private jetty. The house is arranged around five grand reception rooms, 12 bedroom suites and four self-contained flats. In the grounds are four well-equipped estate houses, used in recent times as owner’s accommodation, holiday lets and for staff. Finally, if peace and quiet in a beautiful rural setting is the prime objective, Argrennan House, near Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, which launches in today’s COUNTRY L IFE , will surely fit the bill. Hamish SpencerNairn of Strutt & Parker’s Perth office (01738 783350) seeks ‘offers over £2.75m’ for the

Category A-listed house set in 46 acres of lush Dumfries and Galloway countryside. It comes with a gate lodge, a guest cottage, further cottages and outbuildings, two miles of single-bank salmon fishing on the Dee and a proper nine-hole golf course. From the 18th century to the present day, Argrennan has had relatively few owners, passing from the Gordon family to the Kerrs and the Aikman-Smiths, who lived there until 1984. The current owner bought the house in 2004 and carried out a major programme of repairs and refurbishment, including roofing and lead work, the rebuilding of chimney stacks, the installation of a pressurised hot water and heating system and the redecoration and restoration of the interior. The Georgian manse of 1818 now represents the rear, east-facing wing of the present house. It was probably the work of James Gillespie Graham, well known for his ability to add to existing houses in a sympathetic way and for his passion for grand interiors. An Adam-style addition to the south holds the main bedrooms. Grand the interior of Argrennan House certainly is, from the entrance hall to the impressive reception area that leads to the elegant dining room and the bow-ended drawing room. The main rooms are beautifully proportioned, with high sash windows, original mouldings and some Adam-style fireplaces. All are located on the ground floor and first floor, although the lower ground floor also contains an excellent range of rooms, including the magnificent former Georgian kitchen. The gardens and grounds at Argrennan perfectly complement the splendour of the house, with extensive areas of mature woodland interspersed with ornamental ponds and sweeping lawns; the nearly 1¾-acre walled garden is generally much admired.

Happy hideaways Gloriously middle-of-nowhere retreats in Scotland’s Highlands and islands Ross-shire, £1.1 million The opportunity to own eight extraordinarily beautiful lochs, together with all their leaping trout, may be irresistible for some. Fresh to the market, the Morefield estate covers 4,649 acres north and east of the road between Ullapool and the village of Ardmair, lying from nearly sea level at Loch Kanaird to some 978ft at the summit of Creag na-h-Iolaire. Apart from fishing, stalking, walked-up shooting, gardens and woodland, there’s renewableenergy potential—indeed, the pretty four-bedroom main house, Strathain, is powered by solar panels and a 15kw wind turbine—as well as commercial lets. The majority of the estate is regulated crofted common grazings. Strutt & Parker (01463 723593)

Sutherland, offers over £250,000 With two bedrooms plus two barns on a 15-acre plot, Shepherd’s Cottage is a fixer-upper requiring full renovation or potentially a rebuild, say agents, but it’ll be worth it to appreciate better the surrounding rugged mountainous landscape with the River Runie running through the middle, only 10 miles from Ullapool. ‘Given the beauty of the setting and its prime location on the route of the NC500, there is clear potential to develop a tourism business or simply to create your own private sanctuary,’ says Claire Macdonald of Galbraith (01463 224343)

Isle of Mull, £395,000 It may seem hard to believe, but the little hamlet of Calgary on the Isle of Mull was the inspiration for naming the city of Calgary in Canada—which one of the two best suits the Gaelic cala ghearraidh meaning ‘beach of the meadow’ is for anyone to decide. All three bedrooms at substantial and well-maintained Calgary Farmhouse are en suite; there’s also a sauna and shower room downstairs, off a sitting room with a woodburning stove. Inverness, £1.35 million There’s good sea trout and salmon to be had on the one-third of a mile stretch of River Nairn within Cantray House’s almost 10 acres of grounds, through which a drive winds slowly, passing mature trees, rhododendrons, azaleas, stables, a large greenhouse and other outbuildings, before approaching the 1920s Scottish neo-Palladian house. The agents describe its interiors as Scots/French style, with a large, modern kitchen, three reception rooms, six bedrooms and six bathrooms (including a one-bedroom apartment) over three floors, plus a butler’s pantry, gun room and wine store. Close to the village of Cawdor, with its famous castle, and a multitude of golf courses, Cantray House is four miles from the site of the Battle of Culloden, where its then heir, Bonnie James Dallas, fell. Murdo is known for being good with new wives, having lost count of the number of bores who have patronisingly intoned: ‘I know I can rely on you to keep Belinda/Sophie/Margo amused while I go off with the boys.’ Murdo takes them down to Old Wives’ beat, a stretch of river where there is a nice bit of beach on one bank and deep, shady water on the other. Funnily enough, however, Belinda/Sophie/ Margo invariably turns out to be adept at tying a fly and, having been a tennis blue at Oxford, is a natural at casting. Murdo has never been south of Bonar Bridge, but he knows a thing or two about human nature, retreating subtly into the rod room to the gritted-teeth echoes of ‘Oh, well done, darling’. KG

Sutherland, £700,000 Wild moors, sandy beaches and panoramic views are the draw at Forsinain Steading, a conversion that has been a 10-year labour of love for the vendors. All six bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and two dressing rooms; the four reception rooms are roomy and light-filled with exposed beams, skylights and a mezzanine walkway that contains a library, complementing the characterful stone exterior, freshly repointed, with its jaunty green window and door frames. The garden room (where a log-fired boiler fuels the underfloor heating), kitchen and sitting room, with its reclaimed Caithness flagstones and log burner, all overlook the courtyard and, outside, there’s a garage, workshop, store and natural pond. The village of Armadale is about 20 minutes away and Thurso town 45. Potential buyers should note that Forsinain Steading is an ‘80% complete’ property, with a few remaining fixtures and fittings on site awaiting installation. Monster Moves (01463 263063) 109
