Design: A Small Artist Pavilion A small artist pavilion: a place for an artist to live, work, and display his or her creations. One of the exisiting conditions of the civic garden was a 10 ft. high concrete wall that traversed the site. Rather than removing the wall, I incorporated it into the design to create a dramatic progression through the gallery spaces. Transitioning through the wall signifies a change from private and enclosed space to public, open space that is flooded with natural light. The overall form was required to resemble a 32’ by 32’ cube and be based on a 3- or 4-square structural grid.
Design: A Coffee Kiosk A coffee kiosk: A small structure with the simple program of ordering, waiting for, and recieving coffee. This project was an exploration of how threshold can influence experience. The most challenging aspect of this project was the give siten: on the sidewalk directly in front of Cole Field House, University of Maryland’s massive brick and concrete stadium. My design transforms the simple geometry and materiality of Cole with a roof structure that breaks free of the cube to create a form that is dynamic and compelling.
Digital Fabrication: Waffling Techniques Waffling Techniques: A system for modeling a 3-D space using a series of contours. After generating the form in Rhino using solid editing tools, I explored the way that radial contours would emphasize the void in the middle of the form. I then designed the connections between the the contours so that the model could be assembled without the use of glue or any adhesive.
ANALYSIS: Deconstructing the Architecture Building
As a young architect, I understand the importance of learning by observing and studying the world around me. This project demonstrates my skills in visual analysis and documentation through explorations of University of Maryland’s Architecture Building.
