elcome to Llewellyn’s 2022 Witches’ Datebook! This datebook was designed especially for Witches, Pagans, and magical people. Use it to plan sabbat celebrations, magic, Full Moon rites, and even dentist and doctor appointments. At right is a symbol key to some of the features of this datebook. Moon Quarters: The Moon’s cycle is divided into four quarters, which are noted in the weekly pages along with their exact times. When the Moon changes quarter, both quarters are listed, as well as the time of the change. In addition, a symbol for the new quarter is placed where the numeral for the date usually appears. Moon in the Signs: Approximately every two and a half days, the Moon moves from one zodiac sign to the next. The sign that the Moon is in at the beginning of the day (midnight Eastern Time) is noted next to the quarter listing. If the Moon changes signs that day, there will be a notation saying “@ enters” followed by the symbol for the sign it is entering. Moon Void-of-Course: Just before the Moon enters a new sign, it will make one final aspect (angular relationship) to another planet. Between that last aspect and the entrance of the Moon into the next sign it is said to be void-of-course. Activities begun when the Moon is void-of-course rarely come to fruition, or they turn out very differently than planned. 4
1_wdb2022front.indd 4
2/19/21 1:59 PM
Planetary Movement: When a planet or asteroid moves from one sign into another, this change (called an ingress) is noted on the calendar pages with the exact time. The Moon and Sun are considered planets in this case. The planets (except for the Sun and Moon) can also appear to move backward as seen from the Earth. This is called a planetary retrograde, and is noted on the calendar pages with the symbol r. When the planet begins to move forward, or direct, again, it is marked D, and the time is also noted. Planting and Harvesting Days: The best days for planting and harvesting are noted on the calendar pages with a seedling icon (planting) and a basket icon (harvesting). Time Zone Changes: The times and dates of all astrological phenomena in this datebook are based on Eastern time. If you live outside the Eastern time zone, you will need to make the following changes: Pacific Time subtract three hours; Mountain Time subtract two hours; Central Time subtract one hour; Alaska subtract four hours; and Hawaii subtract five hours. All data is adjusted for Daylight Saving Time.

Working with the New Moon by Danielle Blackwood
T
he liminal moment of the New Moon signifies the birth of a new lunar cycle. Although the Moon is dark at its inception, it begins waxing the moment it is new, and we can connect with that unfolding momentum to create new beginnings and seed intentions. While Witches have worked with the phases of the Moon since time immemorial, the New Moon has become a particularly popular time to set new intentions over the last decade or so. It’s important to stop and reflect on the underpinnings of why. During a New Moon, the gravitational pulls of the Sun and Moon are aligned with the Earth. The gravity of the Sun increases the Moon’s gravity, causing spring tides, the most extreme tides in the lunar month. Note that “spring” here is not a seasonal reference but infers to bound, surge, or rise. As gardeners have known since the beginning of agriculture, just as the New Moon pulls on the tides of the sea, it also exerts its gravitational pull on the water table beneath the earth’s surface. Water is pulled up from the earth, and seeds planted on the New Moon absorb more water than usual, causing the seeds to swell, crack open, and germinate. It is said that planting seeds on the New Moon accelerates germination and makes for stronger, more viable plants. Aligning our energies and intent with the Moon’s cycles can be a powerful catalyst for creating potent magic and bringing desired changes in our lives. Each month the New Moon is in a different sign and shows us the best ground to plant our new seeds of intention. 6

Garden Tool Blessing
Y
ou should cleanse and bless your gardening tools at the beginning of the growing season just as you periodically cleanse your altar tools. First, gather together the instruments you use, whether you only grow a few container plants or a large garden plot. Make sure the tools have been washed free of dirt and sharpened if need be. You can also have packets of seeds for planting when the time is right. Set up your sacred space according to your tradition. Green and yellow candles and incenses of bay and rosemary for purifying are appropriate, but use the incense that is favored by the agriculture deity of your tradition. For example, the Roman goddess Demeter prefers mint. Have ground flour or meal plus a grain beverage or milk for offerings. Call upon the deity to bless your tools as you smudge them. Ask for help for a successful growing season and bountiful harvest with promises to share that bounty. At the end of your ritual, cast the offerings and the ash from the incense into your growing space. —JD Hortwort

January Moon: Blessings & Beginnings
J
anuary marks the beginning of the new calendar year and gives us a chance to start fresh. Some people use this time to make New Year’s resolutions, most of which are abandoned by the end of February. As Witches, you may want instead to use this time to set goals for the year, both spiritual and practical, and set those intentions into place with a blessing for new beginnings that will carry you through the year ahead. If you want, put on an entirely new outfit to symbolize the new start. You can also write out your goals and have them in front of you. Light a white candle and visualize a long path. See yourself setting your feet on that path and say, I call down blessings on this new year / And on my endeavors in the days to come. / May the year be filled with joy, my path be clear, and my steps steady as I walk it. / Help me stay focused on my goals yet flexible in my intentions. / Bless this new year. —Deborah Blake
