Devin’s knowledge and experience into a tome that holistically encapsulates the mental, physical, and spiritual essence of our lives for a well-rounded crystal magic experience. What captures my enthusiasm the most is the respect and care Devin has for the spirits of the crystals and how we can create relationships with these spiritual beings so that we may incorporate them into the circle of our lives.

Often I speak on how important it is to just embrace not knowing—and to that end I am often saying that crystals are just an area I don’t know much about. Thanks to Devin Hunter and Crystal Magic for the Modern Witch, I can’t say that anymore! It’s a book from which I learned new things that I can put to work in my own practice and know that I will refer to often like a well-worn cookbook. A book that anyone— from beginner to established practitioner to collectors—can learn from, Crystal Magic for the Modern Witch is a real gem.

Introduction

A partnership is a relationship between two parties that agree to cooperate with one another to obtain mutual success. These relation ships cannot just be one-sided; they must involve cooperation in the form of respect and encouragement. I know that may come off as a little strange, but as you will soon discover, each of these minerals has its own unique personality and story. They will certainly get to know you while you work together, but you have to take the time to get to know them in return.

rystals, gemstones, and metals have been part of my magical life for almost thirty years, and as of the time

3

The key to ultimate success when working with the mineral king dom is in the word partnership.

C

I am writing this book, I have spent the past twenty years buying, selling, and trading them. I co-own a crystal shop, Datura Trading, here in the San Francisco Bay Area, a place known for its rich gold and silica deposits, and there I get to work with a wide range of minerals from all over the world and teach people how to do the same! I love crystals and minerals so much that I found a way to make them part of my day job.

When most people think of crystals, gemstones, and metals, they may only think of them as fashion statements, symbols of wealth and status, as resources to covet, or in the context of what their “spiritual meaning” might be. These viewpoints do little in the way of showing respect for these minerals, their stories, or the places they come from. These things grew in the deep caverns of the planet long before any plant or animal life came to be, and—as we will explore throughout this book—crystals, gemstones, and metals are like supplements to our spiritual bodies in the way vitamins are to the physical body. By working with them, we can strengthen our spiritual immune systems, support overall etheric health, and lay the groundwork for deep per sonal growth, but we can also do a lot more when we apply their magic to other parts of our craft.

I have been blessed to have spent the past twenty years as a buyer, seller, and trader of rare and fine minerals and gemstones. In this role I have been the middle man for the public and importers, acting as a broker at times when needed, and this has led me to truly appreciate the often untold stories and lives of the minerals we covet. With

Here’s the skinny on the dark side of crystals and crystal magic. This is an important discussion to have and continue to have because the abominable truth is this: there is no ethical way to mine for minerals, and humans have caused irrepara ble harm to themselves, the environment, and other species in the search for them. We have to take responsibility for our actions and then take steps to resolve them for the good of the planet; we cannot be good partners to the mineral kingdom if we do not address these atrocities. While not all minerals were mined before they make their way onto the market, the vast majority of them are the result of mining operations, which means that with almost every purchase, we are funneling money back to these mines and their continued operation.

The problem is that unless you are buying from a secondhand shop or flea mar ket, you are participating in a cycle that includes everything from deforestation and water contamination to human trafficking and, in some historical cases, even geno cide. While great steps have been taken to alleviate these issues, many persist. On the other hand, if we completely stopped mining, then entire economies would col lapse, as mineral exports may be a region’s only source of income.

So, where does that leave us as ethical people who also want to build a spiritual relationship with the mineral kingdom? Above all else, what crystals teach us is that where we put our mind, energy follows. By this, I mean that we need to get involved with the process of mining in whatever way we can and make conscious decisions to support organizations that help end the systemic problems related to mining.

Mystics from generations before us had the privilege of walking up to a stone and being mesmerized by it without knowing the true cost. The mystics of our genera tion have the responsibility to pair the teachings of those who came before us with the wisdom of conservation and restoration. To find a list of organizations that are

this book, we will explore the process of developing a partnership with these mystical allies that is built on respect and cooperation. Before we can really dive into all the amazing benefits of working with the mineral kingdom, we must address the giant elephant in the room: the ethics of mining.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

I highly recommend having a dedicated journal or notebook for your specific practices and experiences; even a Word file on your computer that you use for log ging information is better than nothing. You will also see exercises throughout this book meant to help you create the foundational framework for your own successful practice. When you have completed them, record your experience in your journal

As you read along, you might be tempted to say that I missed a stone that you think should be in one section or that I excluded a practice that you find necessary. Per haps those are lessons for another time and place—as we will see repeatedly, there is no one way to perform crystal magic; there is only your way.

Within these pages you will find a complete guide to the foundational aspects of crystal magic. From this foundation you will be able to build your own partnerships, create your own unique magic, and possibly even become enlightened to aspects of your witchcraft that lay dormant, waiting for you to discover them.

While we couldn’t possibly cover every mineral on the planet and explore its frequency together, I have included information on over one hundred of the most commonly seen varieties. If a specific stone isn’t found within these pages—and there were several I would have loved to include but could not—you can still find plenty of information on it in this book by partnering with an internet search engine or your favorite metaphysical mineralogical dictionary. Simply search for the miner alogical information pertaining to the specimen and reference the first few chapters to identify the metaphysical implications of that information. From the information here, you should be able to develop a better relationship with any stone you may have in your current collection as well as make an informed decision on which min erals to partner with next.

.com.Some of these minerals are also quite expensive to procure or are just hard to find on their own, as is the case with most metals. I highly encourage you to shop around, visit secondhand stores, and reuse antiques! Almost all the metals I use in magic are things such as antique silver spoons or bowls that I was able to get for pennies on the dollar.

itches haven’t always been associated with stones, but we have always been connected to the elements of life that are undoubtedly magical. The mineral kingdom is full of such examples, and a skilled witch works these to their advantage. The crystals, gemstones, and metals that we include in magic aren’t just tools to be used and then discarded or placed in some cabinet to only be gawked at; they are keys possessing the ability to unlock psychic and spiritual powers, and humanity has always been attracted to them.

Long before our ancient ancestors gained the ability to create and manipulate fire, they learned to make tools from stone. Without those stone tools, the evolution of our species would not have been the same, and researchers now believe that it was the making of stone tools that advanced the development of the human brain. The leap from carrying disposable jagged rocks to more complex and reliable tools meant that our ancestors had access to more nutrient-rich foods, which allowed for more energy to be used by the brain and meant that their offspring were healthier. Around 1.8 million years ago, the brain almost doubled in size as a result, and researchers believe that lan guage developed alongside toolmaking by piggybacking off the newly developed parts of the brain.

W

Our connection with the mineral kingdom goes further back than even the evo lution of our species, however. We can trace it all the way to the beginning of life as we know it. Life, regardless of its form, is derived from the mixing of elements under the right circumstances. We refer to this mix of elements here on earth as the primordial soup—a watery solution of organic materials that formed as the result of endogenous abiotic synthesis (this is the process wherein minerals are broken down and mixed by heat released from thermal vents). This solution was then struck by meteors, leading to the creation of proteins, which are the building blocks of life. All life on earth sprang forth from this broth and shares a common ancestor, known as LUCA, or the Last Universal Common Ancestor. LUCA is the ancestor that we share with all the plants and animals that have ever existed on our planet; kinda cool, huh?If

It is important to note that crystals are special among the mineral kingdom and are so beloved that colloquially we have started to refer to all minerals as “crystals.” In truth, every crystal is a stone, but not all stones are crystals. A crystal is made up of molecules that are arranged into highly patterned structures known as lattices. These structures are stable and repeatable, providing symmetry and unique forms of growth.

all life on earth comes from LUCA, then that means we are the descendants of minerals. Sure, that is a bit of a stretch, but the evidence is undeniable and physical, which means we can take cues from it and add them to our spiritual philosophies as a sort of shared inheritance. To take it one step further, we are comprised of the same elements that make up minerals, and those elements were first formed inside of a star. Those stars most likely are comprised of even older star stuff and—well, you get the picture. As we like to say in the occult, “All is one,” and that is both observed in and made literal through the mineral kingdom.

10 chapter one

Crystal magic involves the cultivation, study, and personal application of that connectivity. We recognize the analogous nature of the universe and work with the mineral kingdom to better understand our place within it, as well as how we might affect that universe through our relationship to the mineral kingdom. We do this by working with a mineral’s energy, vibration, and resonance.

Energy is an experiential force that is capable of transmitting spiritual or psychic properties and can be sensed through spiritual or psychic means. Vibration refers to the energy we sense or feel emanating from a mineral. And resonance is cre ated when two vibrations meet harmoniously and unite to create a new vibration. As witches we believe that we are capable of perceiving and interacting with these forces, yet we possess no instrumentation or empirical evidence on which to base our claims. We feel or sense these phenomena and seek to understand their influence on reality, but none of our stories would hold up in a court of law.

When the resonance is beneficial, we refer to this as being harmonic . This means that the two vibrations are syncretic and are sensed as a pleasant feeling by the observer. When the opposite happens, they are considered dissonant and are observed as a chaotic or heavy feeling.

While I am going to assume you already know all about energy and how that term is used in witchcraft, I think it is a good idea to make sure we are on the same page about how I will be using the following terms in this text, just in case we didn’t have the same teacher.

11 crystal awakening

ENERGY, VIBRATION, AND RESONANCE

Therestone.areseveral

factors to consider when we are determining what exactly the energy of a stone is or what it might resonate with. We have a classical understand ing of metaphysical properties, those attributes that the stone carries as a result of its vibration; mostly this comes from folklore, anthropology (and archeology), and unverified personal gnosis. You might have noticed that some stones come with quite the cultural heritage, giving us plenty of information to work with, while others are more recent discoveries and we have had to use our own intuitive skills to discern their properties. We know that even when we borrow the properties from historical reference, those original ideas still came from someone’s unverified personal gnosis (UPG); they were just the first ones to come up with a tradition around the stone’s correspondence.

You will see these terms often throughout the pages of this book, and no doubt you will also see them used freely on the internet and in other books. Each practi tioner has their own take on how this all works, and while we do tend to agree on most things, the exciting truth is that we are all still figuring it out. This brings me to the next point: when it comes to the properties and vibration of a mineral, nothing is set in

CRYSTAL SPIRITS

Crystals have vibration, but where does this vibration come from? Well, that depends on multiple factors, but for me, it all begins with the spiritual entities associated with each stone.

12 chapter one

The bad news is that this means there is no one set way to approach crystal mys ticism. The good news, on the other hand, is that your UPG is just as valid as the traditionally/classically accepted approach. I am not saying throw all the books out and make it up as you go along. I am, however, recommending that you trust your gut as much as you trust any expert. In my experience, if you feel like a stone is going to help with love or healing, even if no one else says it will, your intuitive hit is probably correct. Always remember that, in the end, it is up to you; your own personal energetic constitution is unique and responds differently to everything it encounters. We can be sensitive to these energies similarly to how we might be sen sitive to food.

From here on out, what you will see will be a healthy dose of my own personal gnosis with a foundation of traditional associations and practices from teachers all over the world. If you are interested in my sources, teachers, and inspirations, I highly encourage you to check out the bibliography. I will also direct you there for information on the metaphysical implications of mineral formations and typing. Here I would like to focus on where a mineral’s energy comes from and how we can work with it in witchcraft.

There are generally two primary types of spiritual entity associated with each mineral: angels/devas and dragons. While each min eral specimen contains its own vibration, these spirits are identified as being part of the shared vibration observed within mineral types, and in some traditions they are seen as the source of the crystal’s vibration.

In many traditions, the expression of the collective consciousness of minerals is referred to as a deva (or devi), which is a term from the Vedic period in Hinduism that means “heavenly or divine being.” In Western traditions this type of collective consciousness is often thought to be a form of angel or even fairy. Like angels, devas uphold natural order and maintain the flow of things in the universe through a direct line of communication with the source of all things. The similarities between the two types of beings are quite striking, and it is my belief that in the case of minerals, both terms are describing the same spiritual presence.

Go into this experience with no expectations; instead, allow the deva to present themselves to you in whatever form they see fit. Sometimes I end up visualizing squid-like creatures made of light floating in a dark crystal cave; other times I have seen puffs of shimmering, iridescent smoke! This is where you have to allow yourself to have a completely authentic experience so you can add to your own gnosis.

Meeting the Deva Exercise

Once you meet the deva, ask it any questions that you want and allow it to com municate anything it might possibly want back to you. Remember, this might hap pen in any number of ways; however, you aren’t likely to physically hear a response.

Grab a mineral that you have a natural affinity for and find yourself seated some where comfortable with it close by. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and bring your awareness totally into the moment.

13 crystal awakening

Starting with the body, feel the mineral in your hands. Notice the texture, weight, temperature, and vibration emanating from it. Next, focus on the mineral’s vibra tion and then allow your consciousness to follow that vibration to its point of origin.

What is clear, regardless of terminology, is that these beings are high vibrational and benevolent. When we talk of partnering with a mineral ally, we are mostly refer ring to these spiritual forces. It is they who we have to meet and develop relation ships with and they who will give us deeper access to the energy of each stone. They each have their own personality and are the only ones who can guide us through the process of unlocking each stone’s potential. When we communicate with the stone, it is this presence that we are speaking to. They are a necessary and unavoidable part of crystal magic, and there is no time like the present to meet them.

Angels and Devas

In Western mythology, dragons are classically depicted as hoarders of some great treasure (usually of gold and jewels) that they protect at all costs. Further back than that, they were seen as aspects of nature that protected the untamed places. In the East dragons are said to be the mounts of the gods and are seen as symbols of luck, fortune, and strength.

While working with you, how can I expect my life to change?

What are the best methods for working with you?

Do we have spiritual work to do together at this moment in my life?

Devas are just one side of the story, however. We can also connect to spiritual ener gies the mineral kingdom manifests that are not as high vibrational as the deva but that derive from a mineral’s lower frequency. Nature is all about balance, and drag ons are the yang to the deva’s yin. Where the deva is benevolent and gentle, the dragon is moody and aggressive.

14 chapter one

Are there any other minerals you would like me to partner with?

◊ What can I do in return for your guidance and support?

Before you end the session, ask the deva to show you a sign or symbol that you can recall later to help you connect to their specific energy. Once they show you this, thank them for spending time with you and then take three deep breaths. As you do this, remember the sensation of your physical body and allow your consciousness to gently pour itself back with each breath. Immediately journal about your experience and remember to draw the symbol they showed you.

What matters most after this is that you continue to visit the deva in this way and that you follow their guidance. Building a partnership takes time. Work with it often and treat it with the same respect you would as any of your other friends.

Dragons

Do we have spiritual work to do together in this life?

Wherever we take our cues from, dragons are known for being fickle and having a distrust of humans. This is believed to be because we are disrespectful of the natural world, have a history of breaking our oaths and contracts with the spiritual world, and are habitually warlike. Whereas devas are inclined to work with us, dragons

If you aren’t sure what to ask, you can let them do all the talking; however, here are a few questions you might consider asking:

You will need a mineral specimen of your choice to work with, preferably one that you already have a connection with. Since dragons can be difficult to partner with, I recommend working with tourmaline, moldavite, sunstone, moonstone, emerald, diamond, or labradorite, as the dragons of these crystals have proven to be more forthcoming.Standcomfortably with the specimen nearby. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and bring your awareness totally into the moment. Hold the stone in your hands and tune into its vibration. Unlike devas, whom we visit after connecting to them psychically, dragons need to come to us. We do this by connecting to the vibration of the mineral and then drawing that energy outward from the specimen rather than using it to guide us inward. Once you feel connected to the mineral’s frequency, visualize it emanating from the specimen like an aura. Take your domi nant hand and, using thumb, middle, and index fingers, gently tug on this aura and visualize it being malleable like Silly Putty. Now, pinch some of the mineral’s auric field and pull it so that it stretches from the specimen and wrap yourself with it.

would just as soon ignore us in hopes that we will give up and go away—that is, of course, unless you earn their trust.

It isn’t always necessary to reach out to the dragon of a stone; however, they are the ideal force to partner with when you are seeking to work with the elements of a mineral’s frequency that are related to protection, strength, and balance.

Dragons also reveal secrets to us about magic and the other planes of being. Some of the most precious magic in my collection of spells has come to me through a dragon spirit; while developing these relationships has taken many years, they have proven to be some of my most fruitful as an occultist.

Meeting a Dragon Exercise

15 crystal awakening

Dragons are intricately connected to the geology of the planet, and while there is a particular dragon that resides within each mineral as a collective expression of that crystal’s consciousness, dragons are also brought into being by the formation of larger mineralogical systems such as mountains, volcanoes, and tectonic plates. In the wild, dragons are known to frequent ley lines (the natural occurring veins of subtle energy that move throughout the planet) as a mode of travel.

As you visualize this happening, notice that even though the energy is elastic, it is far fromEnvisionlifeless.this energy growing thicker and taking on the form of a great serpent that wraps itself around you. As this happens, stop tugging at the energy from the specimen and simply observe. Be open to any and all forms of communication. If the dragon doesn’t want to be there, it will leave of its own accord. It may also appear for as long as its help is needed and then leave once it feels it has fulfilled its pur pose. It also may not appear at all. If you successfully begin communicating with the dragon, you should ask it the same set of questions I suggest you ask when meeting a deva.Itis taboo to ask the dragon to leave once it has appeared, as we have already been bold in our action by drawing them from the mineral. They will remain as long as they wish, but even the most tolerant dragon finds it difficult to remain in our company for too long, preferring the environment of the mineral to our own. As a general rule of thumb, dragons leave once the fun is over.

Arborescent/Dendritic: Treelike growth pattern. Arborescent is thought to be more reminiscent of a plant, whereas dendritic more resembles frost. These are so similar they are often grouped together. We see this most often with dendritic agate, also known as Merlinite. These make excellent guide stones for those along a spiri tual path or who are studying the Tree of Life. Work with these allies when you need to understand the big picture or whenever you are developing long-term goals.

18 chapter one

SHAPE, FORM, AND STRUCTURE

The way a crystal or other mineral is shaped and formed has a lot to do with how it transmits vibration to the world around it. There are internal and external elements to consider when determining what a stone’s vibration might be and how it is trans mitted. Shape, form, and crystal structure play a role in helping us determine which properties a stone might have. Here are a few special characteristics to keep an eye out for in your stones.

Botryoidal/Globular: Grapelike with interlocking masses. They look like a glob of solid bubbles. Hematite, chalcedony, and smithsonite often grow with these for mations. These make for excellent dream and mind allies, as they will help when

Encrusted: When tiny crystals form over a parent rock. These can develop in several ways but are almost always tiny in size and form out side of the parent stone. This means that the two minerals did not fuse in the same way and still remain separate, making their energies dif ficult to focus in the same way you can with other crystals. It is often recommended to pro gram the minerals separately but for a unified cause. They make great center stones in grid work and provide resonant ambient energy to their immediate environment.

Druse: These are tiny outward-facing crystals that line the inside of hollow structures like geodes. Fairy quartz is a popular form of druse amethyst. These allies are famous for rapidly lifting the vibration of a space and are often included in cleansing rites for the home. They make great partners for children, especially those with vivid dreams or emotional dis-ease. Many also report these stones being great mediators between humans and the spirit world.

LAMELLAR

Lamellar/Micaceous: Thin, compacted lay ers forming a larger mass resembling a stack of paper. The difference between the two is in the size of the crystals formed. Lamellar typically has smaller crystals than micaceous. Exam ples of both easily can be seen in members of the mica group of minerals, of which musco vite is the most common. As witches, we can work with these allies for all matters related to the mind, including meditation and prayer. These allies can be especially partnered with when developing spiritual or psychic space for others. They do this by facilitating an open environment where others can plug in and be led, making them great for ritual leaders and guided meditation/trance workers.

Geodes also make for excellent mini spirit shrines and are often given to loved ones who are about to embark on new projects or journeys.
