How to Use Llewellyn’s Witches’ Datebook

W

elcome to Llewellyn’s 2025 Witches’ Datebook! This datebook was designed especially for Witches, Pagans, and magical people. Use it to plan sabbat celebrations, magic, Full Moon rites, and even dentist and doctor appointments. At right is a symbol key to some of the features of this datebook. Moon Quarters: The Moon’s cycle is divided into four quarters, which are noted in the weekly pages along with their exact times. When the Moon changes quarter, both quarters are listed, as well as the time of the change. In addition, a symbol for the new quarter is placed where the numeral for the date usually appears. Moon in the Signs: Approximately every two and a half days, the Moon moves from one zodiac sign to the next. The sign that the Moon is in at the beginning of the day (midnight Eastern Time) is noted next to the quarter listing. If the Moon changes signs that day, there will be a notation saying “@ enters” followed by the symbol for the sign it is entering. Moon Void-of-Course: Just before the Moon enters a new sign, it will make one final aspect (angular relationship) to another planet. Between that last aspect and the entrance of the Moon into the next sign it is said to be void-of-course. Activities begun when the Moon is void-of-course rarely come to fruition, or they turn out very differently than planned. 4

Planetary Movement: When a planet or asteroid moves from one sign into another, this change (called an ingress) is noted on the calendar pages with the exact time. The Moon and Sun are considered planets in this case. The planets (except for the Sun and Moon) can also appear to move backward as seen from Earth. This is called a planetary retrograde, and is noted on the calendar pages with the symbol r. When the planet begins to move forward, or direct, again, it is marked D, and the time is also noted. Planting and Harvesting Days: The best days for planting and harvesting are noted on the calendar pages with a seedling icon (planting) and a basket icon (harvesting). Time Zone Changes: The times and dates of all astrological phenomena in this datebook are based on Eastern Time. If you live outside the Eastern Time zone, you will need to make the following changes: Pacific Time subtract three hours; Mountain Time subtract two hours; Central Time subtract one hour; Alaska subtract four hours; and Hawaii subtract five hours. All data is adjusted for Daylight Saving Time.

Twelve Powers, Twelve Perspectives by Ivo Dominguez Jr.

M

any Witches pay attention to the phases of the Moon and the seasonal stations of the Sun in their celebrations and workings. It is a time-honored way to become more attuned to the energetic tides and cycles of nature. The Moon moves through all twelve signs of the zodiac every lunar cycle, spending about two and a half days in each. The Sun moves through the signs over the course of a year, marking twelve zodiacal seasons in addition to the climatological seasons and anchoring the eight holidays of the Wheel of the Year. You can use the information in this article to either pick the best times for certain types of work or to adapt to whatever is available when you need to do your work. The power that can be drawn from the Sun and the Moon is affected by their travel through each sign. Think of each sign as acting like a filter through which the energy of the luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, passes through and is changed. Their energies take on the color, qualities, and patterns of a sign and then radiate down to everyone and everything on Earth. Moreover, each sign brings its own perspective on the world, mood, and styles of Witchcraft. If you know what kind of power is available and which perspectives are favored, you can improve the outcomes of your work. The energies of the Sun and Moon are different to begin with, so even when they are in the same sign, they produce dissimilar effects. The following are a few ideas to give you a sense of how this works. 6

2025 Witches' Datebook.indb 6

Imagine that the luminaries are like two different types of drums and that each of the signs is a unique rhythmic sequence. The sound of that drumming is felt by everyone, and over time more and more people begin to move, think, and act in time with the beat, even if they are not actively paying attention. Since the Moon only spends two and a half days in a sign, its influence builds up quickly and also ends abruptly. The Sun takes about thirty days to move through a sign, so there is a longer span of time to work with the same sign. The Moon pulls the tides of your emotions, imaginings, and perceptions to match the sign that it is in. The Sun is a spotlight that directs your attention and thoughts toward the interests of the sign it is in. Let’s take a spin through the wheel of the zodiac, describe these qualities, and learn how you can use the astrological information in this datebook to better your life as a Witch. The Moon has a more immediate impact, so you may want to start working with it first. Then you can experiment with the Sun in a sign. When you are ready, pay attention to the signs of both to plan your spells and rituals.

Aries Use this sign for starting new projects and planting seeds, whether physical or metaphorical. Aries strengthens competitive and assertive tendencies, so be aware: choose your battles or sidestep them. There is lots of pure life force that can be used for healing or reinvigoration. This sign wants to rush things, so moderate it by taking a beat and thinking things through before taking action. Aries is the power to be, to bring things into existence.

Taurus Use this sign to maintain momentum and build stamina in your work. Taurus is sensual and heightens the capacity to enjoy the physical world. It is a “stop and smell the roses” vibe. This sign encourages grounded thinking and making practical choices. It is slow to alter its course and slow to adopt new ideas, so it is not a time for proposing big changes. Taurus is the power to have, to preserve and sustain things.

Gemini If you need to find a way to say it, communicate it, or learn it, this is the time. Gemini fosters a desire for new experiences, so if you or someone else needs encouragement, now is the time. This sign also brings out a desire for quickly changing games or tasks requiring flexible perspectives. There is a tendency to become distracted or say yes 7

to too many activities at this time. Gemini is the power to think, to interpret and convey ideas.

Cancer If you want to make a place feel like a home, this is the time. As such, Cancer has the power to either enforce emotional boundaries or bring them down and open the heart. This sign also has a special connection to the past, past lives, and the renewal of traditions. Conflict should be avoided, as it is easy to create or reopen emotional wounds at this time. Cancer is the power to feel, to nurture, and to protect what matters.

Leo This sign brings verve, panache, charisma, and the power to inspire confidence and achievements. Leo has the energy and the skills to awaken leadership skills. It also knows how to have fun and create stupendous events and extravaganzas. It tends to look at the best in people and bring that out. But too many cooks spoil the broth. This sign can bring out too much ego and lessen cooperation. Leo is the power of will and courage.

Virgo This sign is practical and can analyze, implement, problem-solve, and organize in almost any situation. Virgo has the power of healing and integration and finding the healthiest ways to live. When you need to make what you have go the furthest, this is the energy you need. The downside is that Virgo energy can be too critical, create stress, and diminish confidence for yourself and others. Virgo is the power to analyze and to discern.

Libra When you need to make peace, mediate differences, or create mutually beneficial agreements, this is your best option. Libra’s influence also stimulates creativity, your appreciation for the arts and beauty, and the ability to bring things into harmony. This sign is good for finding the right balance between work and play, quiet time and social time, and so on. It is not good for coming to a firm decision because Libra sees too many options. Libra is the power to balance ideas and hearts.

Scorpio This sign opens the way to mysteries, magick, secrets, and hidden lore. Scorpio is the sign for passion, seduction, and sexual energy. This energy is also excellent for working with the spirits, the dead, and the 8

otherworlds. If you need to plumb the depths of your soul, this is the right sign. Emotional intensity can be a strength, but sometimes Scorpio is too much. The Scorpion’s sting can hurt. Scorpio is the power to desire and to regenerate.

Sagittarius When you need enthusiasm, optimism, and big plans, this is the sign to work with. Sagittarius is a source of resilience, inventiveness, and persuasion. This energy attracts good luck, friendship, and camaraderie. This sign is also good for creating or understanding systems and philosophies for how things work or relate to each other. Be careful that you don’t spread yourself too thin or give in to excessive behaviors under this sign’s influence. Sagittarius is the power to understand and to embrace differences.

Capricorn This sign is the go-to for achieving success, forging your own path, and being the sovereign of your life. Capricorn will climb from the depths of the ocean to the top of the highest mountain. If you need perseverance and a strategy, this is the right energy. This sign’s energy assists in making long-lasting creations with solid foundations. However, be careful with pessimism and getting stuck in perfectionism with this sign. Capricorn is the power to utilize and to manage wisely.

Aquarius When you want to build a better future, a better community, this is the sign to use. Aquarius also helps you make friends, network, and create groups. If you need to challenge the status quo, get unstuck, or get unblocked, this sign helps open the way. This sign also gives inspiration for innovative and out-of-the-box thinking for a fresh look on old questions. Shock value without a purpose other than rebellion is the peril of this sign. Aquarius is the power to know and to improve.

Pisces This sign heightens connections to other planes, to spirits, and to all things psychic or intuitive. Pisces helps you sense the web of life and the interconnection of all beings with compassion. There is also a great degree of imagination, artistry, and creativity that comes with this energy. Glamours and illusions are easier to create with this sign. Being practical or being grounded is more difficult when the Sun or the Moon is in Pisces. Pisces is the power to believe and to dream. 9

January Full Moon

J

anuary’s Full Moon brings a special kind of hope along with the new calendar year. The months lie ahead of you like a field of fresh sparkling snow without a single footprint in it, a blank page to be filled. Every snowflake begins as a dust particle far up in the sky that accumulates water as it floats down through the darkness. On its travels, it freezes, forming stunning crystal facets, transforming into a completely unique, one-of-a-kind thing of beauty. If it snows in your area, gather some snowflakes and look at their mesmerizing perfection, formed effortlessly by nature and circumstance. Each one really is wondrous when you think about it. Nature creates magic every day, and life is full of simple marvels like this one. Begin this year by allowing the light of January’s Full Moon to open your eyes to the everyday magic around you. Think about the possibilities to come and how you are also changing all the time, transforming into something wondrous. —Kate Freuler
