2 White Adirondack chairs. Cedar shake siding. A rambling front porch and a chocolate lab named Mocha, lying on a shady front lawn. It’s an enviable picture of Hamptons living, set in Indian Hill. For Leigh Anne and Dean, there was no better blueprint for a welcoming family home than the iconic residences of New York’s coveted vacation destination. With classic coastal style and fresh details, the couple built a retreat that embodies relaxed sophistication. ✦ “We’re not fussy people,” Leigh Anne says. “We wanted it to look elegant but livable.”
Classic and coastal Designing the home with a first-floor master wasn’t simply a decision of convenience: along with the detached garage, it established the type of sprawling façade associated with Bridgehampton or Sagaponack. From quintessential white columns and a variegated roofline, dotted with turrets and dormers, the classic coastal features continue indoors, complementing the traditional-style furnishings. For authentic Hamptons charm, designer Sara Berninger enhanced every room with wainscoting, crown molding and other millwork, as well as moments of rural warmth. There are refined corbels over the stove and a coffered ceiling in the great room, but also cedar beams capping the hearth room and a farmhouse sink anchoring the kitchen island.

1 Adirondack chairs on the covered front porch add that classic Hampton touch. 2 To make way for the new home, the builder razed the existing home and rerouted the driveway and a creek that ran through the front yard. 3 Single seat cushions freshen the traditional silhouette of tufted sofas in the great room.

5 Light and breezy The “timeless feel” of an all-white kitchen, with concealed appliances, was a must for Leigh Anne, and this clean, airy aesthetic continues throughout the home. Crisp white molding, stone surfaces, transom windows and a calming palette balance the darker wood tones and add to the home’s natural elegance. White cabinetry in the kitchen and great room offsets the visual weight of richly molded knotty alder beams and built-ins. In the master suite, Berninger incorporated dusty blue walls and a cream area rug, softening the impact of a substantial carved-wood headboard and the distressed wide-plank hickory flooring, which runs throughout the first floor. The home’s muted shades also hint at a classic blue-andwhite color combo, capturing a carefree nautical vibe in refined style.

4 Walls of windows in the hearth room invite 180-degree views of the private back yard. 5 Due to the home’s distance from the main road, the Wolf range was converted to run on propane. 6 The breakfast area is beautifully framed within the curved walls and conical ceiling of the light-filled turret.

10 Fresh glamour Amid the home’s traditional architecture, chrome, acrylic, crystal and other shimmering elements lend modern sparkle. Crystal knobs accessorize the knotty alder interior doors. Crystal chandeliers play off marble basket weave tile in the master bath and a silver starburst accent in the dining room. In the great room, tufted sofas are tailored with chrome-finished nail head trim. These bits of shimmer frequently pair with curving geometric patterns to put a fresh face on standard features. Glass backsplash tiles in the kitchen reflect the arcing trim work on glass cabinet doors, while complementary tiles transform the nearby wet bar into a bold focal point.
Illuminating repetition Besides adding “a touch of fun” to each room, these elements are repeated to visually connect the various first-floor spaces. “Even down to the sinks, everything is relatable to each other,” Berninger says, referring to the kitchen faucet. With the addition of sparkling acrylic handles, the style is also used in the master bath. The quatrefoil shape of overhead lights in the mudroom also appears again, in an outdoor rug, and all of the home’s lighting incorporates chrome—from the fireplace and foyer sconces to acrylic chandeliers over the kitchen island. “Lighting was an integral part of pulling this look together,” Berninger says.

7 Custom woodwork, including the curved wainscoting in the breakfast room and the built-in wine storage, add to the elegant feel. 8 Occasional accents of blue are found throughout the home including the cabinetry in the butler pantry. 9 The dining room table was a gift from Leigh Anne’s father for the couple’s first anniversary. 10 A covered deck that connects to both the great room and master bedroom is a popular hangout for the family throughout all but the coldest of months.

12 A vacation home This retreat may not be a waterfront Hamptons property, but it’s outfitted with plenty of opportunities for coastal-style relaxation. With dead ash trees and rampant honeysuckle cleared away, the back yard offers a wooded view from bright-red Adirondack chairs, and sometimes even the sound of rushing water, when rain routed from the gutters cascades down a
landscaped gulley. A covered deck on the back of the house is made for entertaining, with a fireplace, sofas and a grilling station, while rocking chairs on the front porch are made for lazy afternoons or laid-back breakfasts. “I sit out there every morning and have my coffee,” Leigh Anne says.
