BARCELONA, SPAIN I was able to visit some of the most beautiful and renowned sites, museums, parks, and buildings in the world during my time abroad in good company. Here I strengthened friendships with a girl from Miami University and other classmates traveling abroad, but I also made friends from schools around the country (even “that other” Miami). This picture depicts me at Parc Güell, Antoni Gaudí’s gated-community-turned-public-park with two new friends I made during my time in Barcelona.
Why study abroad? IMMERSE YOURSELF IN A NEW CULTURE. PREPARE TO COMPETE IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. There are few experiences that will help you develop personally, academically and professionally like study abroad. Students who study abroad report increased self-confidence, independence, and flexibility following their program, not to mention improved cross-cultural communication skills. You will navigate new cultures and environments, which will result in the knowledge that you can face challenges head on! Studying abroad also provides the opportunity to study your discipline from a new perspective or focus on other areas of interest. At Miami, you can use study abroad to complete major, minor, or Miami Plan requirements while taking courses that encourage you to learn or think in a new exciting way, or experience the content firsthand! The result? Knowledge, skills and international experience employers are looking for in potential employees entering the global workforce.

Nick Thompson, Class of 2015 Major: Marketing
“I studied abroad to fulfill some of my required credits while getting outside of Oxford and experiencing the world. I studied at three different universities in Europe. It was very interesting to see the different teaching styles and how people pursue their academic careers.”

“Study Abroad affects my life every day. I learned how to get along with people from different cultures and how to work in a different environment than I’m used to. I think this is a really important life skill – something you really can’t learn in a classroom.”

MIAMI GIVES YOU
a world of options! YOU ARE SURE TO FIND A PROGRAM THAT FITS YOUR ACADEMIC NEEDS, SCHEDULE AND BUDGET.
STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS RANGE FROM A WEEK LONG WORKSHOP TO A FULL YEAR EXCHANGE PROGRAM. At Miami University’s Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg (MUDEC) in the heart of Europe, students can choose from a variety of classes that count towards thematic sequences, majors and some Miami Plan foundation requirements. Classes are taught by European and Ohio-based Miami faculty members. Students who participate in the MUDEC program pay Miami University for tuition, fees, housing and meals. Many Miami students choose Faculty-led Study Abroad and Study Away Programs all over the world to complete major, minor and capstone requirements. Miami faculty members teach the courses and students receive Miami University academic credit. Students will pay tuition fees on a per-credit-hour to Miami as if they were at the Oxford campus as well as associated program fees. Most faculty-led programs take place during Summer or Winter term. Exchange Programs allow Miami students to exchange places with a student from another university. More than 100 international universities are accessible to Miami students through exchange partnerships. On an exchange program, students pay Miami tuition and fees. Depending on the program, room and board costs can be paid to Miami or to the host university directly. In Third-Party Provider Programs, students will directly enroll in another university or through international education organizations and earn transfer credit for the coursework completed during the program. These programs can offer expansive academic and geographic options that Miami alone cannot offer. Students pay most fees for tuition, housing and excursions directly to the provider in many cases, your Miami scholarships can travel with you. NEW ZEALAND New Zealand is a country of adventure, and what better way is there to adventure than with fellow explorers. People make an experience a memory. New Zealand is by far the most beautiful place that I have ever been, but it was made more beautiful by the people with whom I shared it. It was a time of excitement, challenges, and growth in ways that I’m still trying to understand. .

Warrior in Training,
Calvin Perfall
TANZANIA The Maasai ‘warriors’ are young men who take their cattle into the bush to graze for fresh grasses. These men are deemed warriors because of the dangerous wildlife that they face in the bush on a daily basis. Warriors typically wear red because the color is supposed to warn lions of their presence. Before venturing into the bush, the Maasai warriors perform a dance that features many high jumps that coincide with piercing yells. This picture captures myself attempting to learn the warrior dance with local school staff and Maasai warriors themselves.
Message from the Assistant Provost Miami University does not limit its vision to the view from Oxford, Ohio. Miami ventures beyond the horizon because future leaders will tread in the global community. We encourage study abroad to enrich the classroom experience by providing students with transformative and immersive education abroad experiences. Students choose to study abroad for many reasons – language acquisition, understanding their own personal culture and identity, increased self-confidence and self-reliance, gaining a new perspective, or to enhance an academic interest. These are what is at the core of the education abroad experience, but the results can be much more as relationships are built around the world and people come together to make our world a stronger place. Discover all that Miami University has to offer in opportunities for study abroad – you won’t be disappointed.

COSTA RICA My classmates and I wanted a group picture of the amazing landscape we saw while we drove right on the edge of the Costa Rican mountains. What a beautiful place, full of wonderful people. As the saying would go in Costa Rica, Pura Vida! ____________________________ All study abroad photos were student entries in Miami’s annual study abroad photo contest.
