Scene of crash a valuable lesson It was a tragic scene with twisted metal, broken windshields and dead students at Lloydminster Comprehensive High School (LCHS) on Wednesday, but luckily it wasn’t real. Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) partnered up with emergency services across the city to stage a mock collision, spreading a visual message on why distracted and drunk driving are bad ideas. “I think the for us, the purpose of the event is to work in partnership with the schools and give them an opportunity to see what happens when there’s alcohol or distracted driving involved, and when people aren’t paying attention, this is the consequence of what happened, said Norm Namur, chief of the Lloydminster Rescue Squad. “We like to go out and do public demonstrations

and just see if we can get that message across, that it’s not okay to drink and drive, that it’s not okay to distracted drive, and that’s the message we want to get across. Other crews on the scene were WPD Ambulance, Lloydminster RCMP, the Lloydminster Fire Department, with vehicles supplied by Midway Towing. SADD then had students in bloodied make up play the roles of collision victims while emergency crews came in to clean up the scene. LCHS students sat back on the school lawn and watched everything unfold. Some of the student actors were taken away in handcuffs, while some left in body bags, showing that nobody wins in a preventable accident. “If we can get that message across to one individual

and it makes a difference at one of these parties, that this individual will say, ‘No, it’s not okay to drive. I need to phone my parents or a friend,’ that’s the message we want to get across, said Namur. “And the local SADD group there do a real good job to convey that message to their students. Namur said he feels the event went great and it was great for the Rescue Squad to work with the other emergency services. Mock collisions are something they try to do every year and he said the Rescue Squad would be interested in partnering up with SADD again next year. “I think its important all emergency services go out there and showcase what we can do, how we work together, and try to make it as real as we can for the students to see this is real and not make belief.

Occasionally, the Lloydminster and District SPCA receives guests that are not of the feline or canine variety. Herman, a 1 year old Guinea Pig has that distinction. Although he may be small in stature, don’t underestimate this little guy. Herman is bursting with personality. He loves to explore and is very curious. He is often at the front of his cage observing the staff, whistling and purring his little heart out. Herman loves getting nose rubs and will squeal with delight. He also just loves feeding time. A plate full of fresh vegetables along with a steady diet of timothy hay will send him over the moon. Herman doesn’t like to be held too much. He’d much rather have all four feet on the floor, ready to explore. A large exercise pen where he can run and play will suit this guy just fine. If you are looking for a great little companion that will put a smile on your face, then you really need to meet Herman. Stop by the SPCA and say hi, today.

The Arts Without Borders Quickdraw event will see another veteran return this year, as Dawn Lawrence Floen returns back to make more of her precious metal clay jewelry. When it comes to the Quickdraw, an event that gives artists a 90 minute time frame to create a piece of work, Floen takes the safe route with a couple trial runs before showing up. “I go through three of the same pendant just to get the idea—to know how long it's going to take me so it's not an unknown when I'm there,” she said. Floen works with precious metal clay, a clay made from small recycled silver particles that are held together with a vegetable binder, and after it's shaped and fired, the binder dissolves into the atmosphere leaving her with a piece that's 99 per cent silver. She said this year it's likely she'll be crafting a necklace, though she's not sure exactly what kind, but has been tossing a couple ideas about in her mind. “It'll be a precious metal clay no matter what it is, I'm just not sure what the shape will be for a pendant,” she said. “(Last time) I made a seahorse necklace with beads and a stone.” As part of the Quickdraw, all the pieces artists create go up for auction, then the proceeds go toward bursaries for the arts. Coincidentally, the last time Floen took part about three or four years ago, she applied for one of the bursaries and won. She laughed as she recounted the fact she helped make money for her own bursary, which she used to take an art course to further her skills. Floen started honing those skills at an early age, saying she's painted and drawn her whole life, and even did a 25 year stint

Artist Dawn Lawrence Floen will be making a return to the Arts Without Borders Quickdraw event, where she’ll be making jewelry out of precious metal clay. All artists have 90 minutes to create a piece of art, which is then auctioned off for money that goes into art bursaries.

teaching art at E.S. Laird Middle School. “And I've been working with precious metal clay since 2009 and I started beading in 2006, so I've been painting and drawing my whole life, but jewelry has only been since 2006,” she said. “It's become my big passion.” She was bitten by the jewelry bug when a friend of hers had a beaded watch she really liked, prompting her to buy some beads and make one of her own. From there she said she just couldn't stop.

Floen was a sculpture major in clay while in university, but couldn't do that for a long time after graduating due to the lack of a kiln, and because she finds precious metal clay similar to her major, she's been drawn to it in a big way. “It just really hit my buttons, I don't know how to explain it any better,” she said. The Quickdraw event takes place at the Lakeland College cafeteria on June 13, is free of charge and offers wine and snacks for those in attendance.

Teach kids healthy (money) habits DOLLARS & SENSE by Jill McKenzie

Most parents today are doing their best to teach their kids healthy habits: we read to them, give them healthy food, get them to bed on time and encourage activities that will boost their confidence and teach them to persevere. The ultimate goal is a child who grows up to function in society to his or her highest ability. But as hard as we try provide them with the toys and lifestyle we think they need, we are not always teaching them the skills needed to maintain that lifestyle once they are out on their own. By neglecting to teach children the basics of money management, many parents are inadvertently setting their kids up for stress and failure down the road. Begin the conversation Kids need to understand if your home is not paid off, the rent or mortgage comes first. Groceries, payments and bills come next. Kids as young as three years old can begin to learn that once money has been spent it is gone until more has been earned. Don’t scare them, but be honest, and use age-appropriate examples to help them understand. If you have experienced a loss of income and have had to adjust your

lifestyle, sitting down to create a family budget that kids can understand might help take the stress out of dodging requests for toys and money. Within reason, including older kids in discussions can empower them to help save towards family goals. Using a chart to illustrate progress towards saving for a vacation, for example, is good motivation to curb other discretionary spending. Be sure to discuss privacy and tell the kids only what they can handle without causing them to feel stressed. Set an example Even if you’re a smart shopper and stick to a budget every month, your kids may not be aware of the skills that you are using. They may observe you buying what you want and need and not realize that you have carefully set aside the money to do so. On the other hand, kids may also watch their parents spend on things they cannot afford and develop the belief that bad debt is just a way of life. Remember your children are learning from what you do as well as what you say. Recognize opportunities to discuss how and why you are spending and resist the urge to preach. If your child grows up feeling comfortable discussing money with you they may avoid costly mistakes later on. Learning to spend wisely It’s tempting to deny children access to money—if they don’t have

it they can’t waste it! But experts agree kids must receive money in order to learn to spend it wisely. At the same time, experts caution against giving an allowance for doing simple household tasks. Teach your kids that helping out is expected of them as a member of the family and keep their allowance a separate transaction. Randomly purchasing what kids ask for ensures that they will always desire the next new thing that they see. By providing an allowance— however small that may be in today’s reality—and allowing them to shop for themselves, kids learn to wait until they have enough money for what they want. When spending their own money, they will also be much choosier about what to buy. Learning to delay gratification is very important for kids and is something that many adults need help with, too. Saving and giving Money experts agree that dividing a child’s allowance into separate jars or containers is an effective way to teach them to save for different purposes (because we all do that, right?). Do what works for you, but an example is 10 per cent towards both short and long-term goals, 10 per cent towards charity and the remaining 70 per cent used at the discretion of the child (within agreed upon guidelines). At first, you may dread seeing more cheap plastic toys being brought into

your home. But, given guidance and time, having access to a small amount of spending money teaches kids responsibility and thrift. Kids today are inheriting a world that is increasingly unpredictable; the drop in the price of oil is just one example of that. Teaching them to handle money wisely is one more way you can prepare your kids to cope in changing times. Allow them to make some financial decisions while they are young so that they can learn about buyer’s remorse and debt on a smaller scale. Let them discover that there is as much reward in helping those in need as there is in purchasing a new gadget. It will be a relief to watch them move on to independence knowing they have the skills to live within their means.

Real Estate has been an interest of mine all my life. While growing up, my mother and I spent many Saturdays touring show homes.Shortly after our wedding, my husband and I built a Nelson Lumber package home stick by stick. Our favourite book that year was one called How To Build Your Own House. We poured our own basement, with a cement mixer, an uncle, two brothers and several cousins. With great determination, we turned that pile of lumber into our home. We learned a great deal that year. Our marriage survived and we went on to purchasing, renovating and renting houses in addition to a plumbing and electrical contracting business. My hands on experiences have given me some insight on home construction and renovations. In addition, I worked as a Special Needs Aide at the Kitscoty Kindergarten for many years. Working with children and their families in their homes made me aware of the importance of matching a home to a family. Paint on the walls and the size of the baseboards are important, but not nearly as important as how your family will thrive and enjoy life in your new home. Family is the most important part of my life. My husband and I were blessed with four wonderful children and so far five adorable grandchildren. Our children all put family life as a priority, so we have many interesting family gatherings in our home. My goal is to find homes for my clients that can bring as much joy to them as ours has to us!

Lakeland student wins top apprentice award Lakeland College apprentice, Mason Mehl, is among the best of the best Alberta apprentices. Mehl was recognized as the province’s top parts technician apprentice and was one of only 58 apprentices to receive a 2015 Top Apprentice Award. This marks the eighth time a Lakeland parts technician apprentice has won this provincial award. “This is a well-deserved accomplishment for Mason and we are quite proud of him,” said Randy Hobbis, Lakeland College instructor. “Mason would be in class studying an hour before class started. He’s a personable, skilled and top-notch journeyman.” Presented by the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Advanced Education, Mehl was honoured at the annual Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Awards on April 15. “It was lots of fun and really nice to see that when people put in an honest effort they are able to achieve their goals and be recognized,” says Mehl, of Oyen, Alta. To achieve his goal of becoming a parts technician, Mehl enrolled in Lakeland’s apprenticeship program. He completed three periods of technical training at the Vermilion campus as well as the

required 4,500 hours of on-thejob training. Excelling in his studies at Lakeland, Mason was one of the recipients of the Trades Staff Award, which is awarded to the top graduating apprentice student in each program based on leadership, enthusiasm and academic ability. “It was pretty incredible at Lakeland to see that the instructors weren’t only willing to help you succeed but, on top of that, they were willing to help you excel,” said Mehl “They wanted to see everyone reach their full potential not only at college but in life (and) you could tell they all genuinely cared about the students,” he said. “ I’d like to thank the instructors at Lakeland because without them we wouldn’t be able to learn and achieve our goals.” Alberta’s annual Top Apprentice Award honours apprentices in each trade who achieved the highest overall marks in their final period of training, and received strong employer recommendations. Mehl credits Rocky Mountain Equipment—his employer of 10 years—for supporting him throughout his apprenticeship and on the job today. “They’re a great business because they want everyone to get the education and training they need to do their work

well,” Mehl said. “I’m very fortunate to be able to be employed with them and have their support. Rocky Mountain Equipment has 39 stores so if you can’t find the answer at your own branch, we’re all linked together and someone at a different branch will have an answer.” Though Mehl is now a journeyman, he said he’s still learning something new every day on the job. “One of the best things about this trade is that it’s never boring” said Mehl, who has a farming background and training in agricultural mechanics. “It’s very seasonal with the line of work that I am doing in ag equipment,” he said.“Being able to help someone with equipment problems is what I enjoy the most, that way they can continue with their work and be able to support their families once we help them out.” Parts technician is one of nine apprenticeship trades offered at Lakeland College’s Trades Centre at the Vermilion campus. Lakeland also offers periods one and three of the parts technician program online. To learn more about the School of Trades and Technology Apprenticeship, visit lakelandcollege.ca/trades.

Letters to the editor

Letter writer’s comments on the mark Dear editor: I want to thank Erwin Warkentin for his courage in writing openly (May 26 Source: Lloyd Airport costs could be cheaper) with pragmatism, clarity, sensibilities, knowledge, skills in providing and allowing Lloydminster residents to better understand how cost saving measures in our pocket books can take place through the Municipal Airport where in the end, it’s a good fit for all stakeholders invested in this city. Saying that, Lloydminster management team (Fred Ackerman and Wade Frasz), council and city manager failed to listen to an engaging voice in that they chose to go ahead with a more expensive format for the new airport system in spite of being cautioned of a better overall long term operation of the airport, saving tens of thousands of dollars.

So then one bemoans “Who is to benefit from the decision?” “What corporate investment holding benefits from the decision?” Lloydminster residents fail to benefit from the decision when more monies are demanded through increased costs in general services, taxes, water rates, business fees, those selling tobacco business fees and the list continues. Deaf ears may need hearing aids, an accommodation, to better learn, understand, process information to function and have better performances rather than to continue to frustrate seemingly without accountability to the ones who pay their wages. Some may see this as careless, reckless and without respect for residents. Worse yet, this could be deemed for themselves and without pride.

We hear “transparency” yet deaf ears failed to listen to their own words. A clear example is prior to this new council, while with our former mayor, the public was able to view, each month, at the end of each council meeting the financial accounts register of payables that could be matched to monies received, the current city balance of monies the city had, such as Sept. 4, 2007 cheque payable to .... At the end of several pages, residents knew how much money was in city accounts, where it was spent, by whom, for the purposes and acknowledged by council. Thank you Erwin for your civic duty, candour and putting things out there. Dawn Dalton-Hodd Lloydminster

The Lloydminster Xtreme earned an 8-4 victory over the Westlock Rock on Saturday to secure first place in the North Conference.

Xtreme left standing on top of conference by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com

A battle between the top two teams in Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League junior B tier 2 North conference ended with the Lloydminster Xtreme picking up an 8-4 victory over the Westlock Rock on Saturday, putting them on top of the conference standings with an 8-1 record this season. After a Branden Petersen goal in the first period for a 1-0 lead, Petersen added his second as part of a three goal period for Lloydminster, that led 4-1 heading into the final period of play. There they would add four more goals from Gage Lychak, Jaden Bouvier, Rob Poole and Skyler Shynuk, while Westlock scored three in the period in what was a strong defensive outing to give Lloydminster the top spot in the conference.

“Top two teams in the league, so it was nice to get a decisive victory over them,” said head coach Graham Murray. “I thought we played the whole sixty minutes against them and came out with good results.” The victory, Xtreme’s third straight, is also the first game in their last four to not need overtime to get a winner, as the Xtreme allowed two leads against Sherwood Park and one against the Edmonton Warriors to slip, resulting in their only loss of the season, though they did manage to sneak out two victories. While Westlock is tied for second best in the North conference with Sherwood Park at 6-2 for the season, Murray felt the team still didn’t play to the level they are playing at, and again played down to the Rock, allowing plenty of turnovers in Saturday afternoon’s victory. “I still feel like we played down

to those guys,” said Murray. “We still have far too many turnovers for what I like seeing, but we are still building. There were times when our offence was sputtering, but we got the movement eventually and started sniping goals again.” Lloydminster expected a physical game with the Rock, as last season the Xtreme eliminated Westlock from the post-season. With a defensive backing, including hard nose play from Chase Guest and Tanner Ringland, the Xtreme limited one of the leagues best offences to just four goals, the lowest Westlock had scored in a game all season. “Defence was really on point today,” said Guest. “They took their man and stayed with them and didn’t give a while bunch of opportunities.” The Xtreme this season haven’t needed many comebacks through the first half of the schedule, instead getting out to quick starts in each

game and forcing the attack to come the other way. It has led them to the top of the standings with six games remaining this season. Next week the Xtreme are home on Saturday to the Lakeland Heat before taking on the Vermilion Roar on Wednesday. A victory on Saturday against the Heat would also guarantee the Xtreme a playoff spot, as the top six from the eight team conference will make the playoffs. But there is still plenty of work to be done if Lloydminster wants to host playoff games all post-season, rather than hitting the road. “We are sitting pretty in the middle of the season,” said Murray. “Right now we should be worried about locking up a home playoff spot. We should be the first place team overall and get that bye and then we get that home series here guaranteed. That’s the goal right now.”

Barons host rugby sevens

by Andrew Brethauer andrew@lloydminstersource.com

Rugby sevens will make its Olympic debut this summer at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, marking the first time the sport has been played at the Summer Olympics since 1924. So it seemed like the perfect year for the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School rugby teams to invite a handful of teams for a sevens tournaments on Friday, breaking away from the traditional 15 person, or rugby union, game they have played all season long. Rugby hasn’t been played in the Olympics since 1924, largely because traditional 15 person teams need up to 80 hours of rest between games, which doesn’t work well for the short two week window of time that the Olympic Games runs. Rugby sevens, however, as was played at the Barons tournament, is two seven-minute halves, played on a traditional rugby size field, so multiple games can be played in a single day, allowing a medal at the Olympics to be awarded within two days. Or in the Barons case, where they had teams from Cold Lake and St. Albert, in one day. “It’s a more exciting brand of rugby to watch,” said Mark Grillandini, head coach of the Barons rugby team. “When you take 16 players off the field it really opens the game. It always more flow to the game and a lot more scoring.” Lloyd Comp does have the tradi-

tional 15 person teams, but Grillandini said it can be a challenge for other smaller high schools to get a full team together, including extra players, whereas a sevens team requires half as many. As of today, the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association only has 15 player rugby championships, which both Baron teams qualified for this year after the girl’s team defeated Cold Lake 22-0 last Wednesday, and the boy’s team also defeated Cold Lake 40-33. They will now head to Lethbridge on June 3 to compete in the provincial tournament. In the future, Grillandini would like to see sevens added, giving other schools a chance to participate in rugby. “It’s hopefully coming there in a couple of years as there are plenty of tournaments around the province,” said Grillandini. “It is a growing sport. We are definitely going to do both. The more times the kids can play the better.” A few of the Baron players, such as Leith MacEwen, have played rugby sevens at a high level, as he recently played as part of Team Saskatchewan at the National U18 7s Rugby Championships. For other players, such as Levi Morris, the tournament on Friday was their first try at the smaller version and noticed the difference right away. “Fifteens is a lot less running, where sevens you work a lot harder, a lot more effort goes into it,” said Morris. “Sevens you are passing a lot more and trying to get it wide around their

defence. There is a lot more space to run in sevens with less people.” MacEwen’s experience with Team Saskatchewan showed that with fewer people on the field, the quality of those players goes up. Rugby sevens is a faster and stronger game, and while in traditional 15 player rugby you can find a few weak spots in the line, sevens generally has the best of the best from each team. “Sevens you are expecting more muscular guys, faster guys, 15s you are expecting half and half,” said

MacEwen. “Everyone is part of the team and there is no weak spot. As soon as you go individual there is a weak spot, otherwise, if you work together and communicate, there is no weak spot.” Rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics will run from Aug. 6 to 11. Canada will compete in the women’s tournament after finishing second in the 2014-15 World Rugby Sevens Series. The Canadian men’s team did not qualify, finishing ninth and out of the top four.
