LloydMall crews work on re-opening TAYLOR WEAVER

In the early hours of Aug. 15, there was a water line break at the LloydMall, causing significant damage to the majority of the retailers and forcing the shopping centre to close until further notice.

“Due to that water line break, LloydMall continues to be temporarily closed at the moment, however, that being said, some of our retailer’s that have exterior entrances are open for business at this time,” said Shannon McEwen, marketing coordinator for LloydMall.

“Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, Ace Liquor and Dollarama are currently open.”

Due to the extent of the damage, LloydMall doesn’t have an update on a reopening date, but that information will be released “when it’s appropriate.”

Local restoration companies currently working on the project include First OnSite and First General Ser-

vices. Additional contractors have been brought in for the work at the request of individual businesses for insurance reasons.

“

It was an unfortunate event and we really just ask that the public and the community continues to understand and support our retailers.

“There was significant damages from the flooding and crews continue to work around the clock to get the mall reopened as soon as possible,” she said. “The retailers are working quickly to reopen the centre safely. It’s a matter of making sure that, when we do reopen, the building is safe for our community and our shoppers.”

Boston Pizza to fete cancer fighter

Boston Pizza is hosting a Jarrod Russell day.

The event will take place at the Lloydminster restaurant on Sept. 9 from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. to raise additional funds for Russell’s quest to end kids’ cancer.

The 45-year-old childhood brain cancer survivor wrapped up his sixth Great Cycle Challenge on Aug. 31 with $29,578 raised for the SickKids Foundation.

Restaurant owner, Marina Stephenson, wants to recognize the Lloydminster resident for his fundraising and his previous 10 years of employment at Boston Pizza “We’ve supported Jarrod in everything he’s done,” said Stephenson. “Really, we just want people to come down and learn about what Jarrod’s doing and we’re taking a day to celebrate him,

and hopefully, we can raise some more funds.”

There will be some prizes to give away along with face painting and balloon animals for kids.

“We’re going to have a donation box and we’re going to be donating from the sale of all medium and large pizzas for the entire day,” added Stephenson.

“We’ll have some free pizza sampling as well.”

Boston Pizza also helped to support a family and friends barbecue fundraiser at Bud Miller All Seasons Park last Sunday with those proceeds putting Russell on top of the cycle challenge leaderboard for the sixth straight year.

Russell took a short break during his final 40-kilometre ride on Aug. 31 to say it wouldn’t matter if he’s the top fundraiser, as long as the money he raises helps a family that has a child with cancer.

This year, he rode in honour of Braxton Weidman, a young boy from Alabama who is fighting for his life with brain cancer.

“I’m just riding for Braxton too, and I’m just worried about him and his family,” said Russell.

Russell was diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was just four and is still dealing with the side effects of his cancer treatment.

He has epilepsy and partial paralysis on his right side and limited movement of his arm, fingers and legs—but has no plans to stop riding to fight cancer.

“I will do it until I am crippled out of the bike,” he joked.

“That’s all I do in the summer is ride my bike.

It’s something to do.”

Russell rode his recumbent bike and a new e-bike every day in August, ending about 100 kilometres shy of his 1,200 km goal — for

good reason.

“I was thinking 1,100 is enough for me with my broken collarbone and all that,” he explained.

“I’ve lost about a week and a half just with that, recovering.”

His sister Tanya Robertson said when Russell broke his collarbone in the spring it took him a while to get his body going again.

“He set some high kilometres for his goal, but as we progressed through the summer, we knew it was going to be tough with his injuries,” said Robertson.

She says even during the extreme heat this summer, he had to be choosey when he rode.

“He’s done awesome and he always does it for the kids,” explained Robertson.

“We as a family have been telling him, it doesn’t matter how many kilometres in the end you get; it’s bringing awareness to the kids and going out daily and doing as much as you can, is what means the most.”

Russell’s extended family is also hoping to visit Braxton and his family in the U.S., but right now COVID is preventing them from crossing the border.

“We are definitely, as a family, trying to actually meet Braxton face to face and his family,” said Roberson.

“They’ve sent Jarrod some Team Brax T-shirts and wristbands. We wish all the

“With the restoration crews taking up our parking lot space that was going to be used for the fair, we had to cancel,” she said.

“I have been in touch with the organizers of the fair and let them know an alternative venue could be the Lloyd Ex, so that’s

McCormack stands up for freedom GEOFF LEE

Ann McCormack values freedom and less government control and is campaigning for both as the Lakeland candidate for the Peoples Party of Canada in the upcoming federal election.

The former pharmacist lives on a farm with her husband and two daughters and quickly raised her hand when asked to represent the riding when voters go to the polls on Sept. 20.

“It was short notice.

We thought we had a

candidate but that person chose not to participate,” explained McCormack.

“I feel very strongly that our freedoms are being infringed on more and more, and I think it’s now or never. We’ve got to stand up—If this is my way of expressing concern and representing people with similar concern, then I am happy to do it.”

McCormack says the PPC’s advocacy for individual freedom, personal responsibility, respect and fairness is in line with her own

values regarding election issues like COVID vaccines.

She is strongly in favour of informed consent when it comes to the vaccine and feels the idea of vaccine passports is a draconian measure that should not be entertained in a free Canada.

“If you look at B.C., they want a passport.

They want that a week before the federal election, so does that mean unvaccinated people are not welcome to vote,” said McCormack.

B.C. will require resi-

dents to show proof of vaccination to enter restaurants, gyms, casinos, sporting events, theatres, conferences and weddings.

“This is very troubling. I don’t agree with a segregated society. I think that’s a real step backwards,” said McCormack.

She notes both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated can get infected and transmit the virus, which negates the rationale for segregation and passports.

She thinks many of the policies of the PPC resonate with voters, with the party recently polling at about 16 percent in Alberta, essentially neck in neck with the Liberals, with the Conservatives in the lead.

“So that’s a jump from the 4 per cent from the 2019 election,” said McCormack.

“I think Albertans like freedom. I don’t think we like the dictatorial nature that we’re seeing from the federal government right now.”

McCormack traces her passion for more provincial powers to when she was a kid, hearing former Liberal Party prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau repeat over and over, that Canada needs a strong centralized government.

McCormack says that was the beginning of the disastrous national energy policy to control and nationalize all of the provinces’ natural resources.

Centralization of power is also promoted by current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on numerous issues.

“That means giving back provincial control over resources, resource management—taxation, a lot of these things,” explained McCormick.

She says the biggest problem getting that message out to voters, aside from the short election notice, is the sheer size of the Lakeland riding.

“I think this area measures just over 10,000 sq. miles, so we are relying on social media, word of mouth,

good wishes—volunteers,” said McCormack.

“We’re doing it on a shoestring. Elections Canada says a person could potentially spend up to about $160,000—I drive a Honda and my budget is not $160,000!

“We’re just spending what we can afford and doing the best we can with the wonderful people we’ve got because that’s our best resource,” she said.

McCormack will speak at several forums coming up in local communities and town halls.

Interval Home brings Wine, Stein and Spirits to Lloyd TAYLOR WEAVER

Rolling Green Fairways is the place to be on Sept. 24 as the Lloydminster Interval Home Society presents its first-ever Wine, Stein and Spirits event.

The event is boasted as an evening filled with wine, stein, spirits, a charcuterie tasting and live music, to celebrate local vendors and musical talent.

The evening will include five local vendors that will be sharing some of the products they carry.

“It’s about tasting something new for the first time, learning a little bit more about the products we have nearby and where it can be purchased in Lloydminster,” said Leanne Wildeman, community engagement coordinator, Lloydminster Interval Home Society.

“There’s also going to be a charcuterie bar, which is basically unlimited during the tasting time, and the vendors are also going to help pair some of those and explain what goes well with their products.”

Tickets went on sale roughly a week ago and Wildeman said they seem to be selling pretty well.

“Each ticket holder is going to get 10 tasting tickets and they can go around to the different vendors and taste differ-

ent products, whether that’s wine, beer, vodka, there’s some whiskey, things like that,” said Wildeman.

“

It’s about tasting something new for the first time, learning a little bit more about the products we have nearby.

“You can purchase more tasting tickets, but each person gets 10 tickets with the purchase of admission.”

After the tasting wraps up there’s going to be live music. There will also be a silent auction and a mystery wine pull. The mystery wine pull will include 41 wrapped bottles of wine so the type of wine is unknown. Attendees can buy a cork and they will then get the bottle of wine that matches that cork.

All funds raised will be supporting the Lloydminster Interval Home Society’s programs and services and Wildeman said they’re hoping to make it an annual event.

“We actually started planning this preCOVID with the hopes of having it last year for our 40th anniversary, however, the world had other plans, so we put it

on ice for the time being, but once we saw events were starting to open up again, we started putting the wheels in motion,” she said.

“I think it will be fun.

It’s not something that’s been done around here before, that we’re aware of, nothing recent anyways.”

There are 250 tickets available and tasting starts at 7 p.m. Tasting wraps up at 9 p.m. and the festivities continue into the night. There will also be a midnight lunch provided.

“We’re definitely keeping in mind that COVID isn’t gone,” said Wildeman.

“With the charcuterie, you can’t just walk by and pick a grape up off the plate; everyone will have their own individual boxes and you can select what you want, and we’ll have volun-

teers who will be filling your box for you, that way there aren’t 250 people reaching in and grabbing what they want.

“We’re also trying to provide DD rides home from the event, we’re just confirming some of those details.”

Tickets are still available and cost $80 per person or a corporate table of eight is $600.

“We’re also accepting silent auction items and it’s all coming together,” she said.

McCormack says voters in Lakeland are expressing some really strong feelings to her during the early going of the campaign.

“They’re worried about universal basic

income, they’re worried about the collapsing of natural resources. They read about our taxes going to the United Nations,” she said.

She said they are worried about what they are going to do if their kids have to go on a school bus and what will happens if their kid gets to school and they vaccinate kids without parental consent.

“People are hot,” she said.

For voters in the Border City, it’s now pretty clear who is running in the upcoming federal election in respective provincial ridings.

Elections Canada has just posted its list of confirmed candidates with the official nomination process for candidates complete.

Voters go to the polls on Sept. 20.

The Battlefords-Lloydminster riding in Sask is contested by (Liberal Party) Larry Ingram; (Conservative Party) Rosemarie Falk; (New Democratic Party) Erik Hansen; (Green Party) Kerri Wall; (Maverick Party) Ken Rutherford and (Peoples Party) Terry Sieben.

The Alberta candidates for Lakeland are (Liberal Party) John

Turvey; (Conservative Party), Shannon Stubbs; (New Democratic Party) Desiree Bissonnette; (Maverick Party) Fred Sirett; (Green Party) Kira Brunner and (Peoples Party), Ann McCormack.

The deadline to apply to vote by mail is Sept.

14 at 6 p.m.

An application form is available to fill out online at Elections Canada.

Once the application is accepted with a copy of proof of personal identity and current address, Elections Canada will deliver a voting kit in the mail.

The final step is to

return the completed ballot by mail and meet the deadline on election day or it won’t be counted.

Voting by mail is convenient for electors who can’t wear a mask, who are part of a vulnerable population, who are in self-isolation, who may have come in contact with COVID-19 or who work or study away from home.

Rotary learns where garbage goes

When it comes to solid waste, trash talk comes naturally for Karen Dela Rosa.

Dela Rosa is a senior manager of waste services for the City of Lloydminster who spoke to the Rotary Club of Lloydminster on Monday about curbside collection and landfill services.

She noted Lloydmin-

ster was the first community in Saskatchewan that rolled out a recycling program in the 90s and the first to start an organic collection program in 2013.

“The city has diverted more than 26,000 tonnes of waste from the landfill,” said Dela Rosa.

“I just want to thank the residents of Lloydminster for embracing all of these initiatives.”

The city provides more than 8,337 households with an ever-evolving collection of waste, organics and blue bag pick-up throughout the year.

“In August, we did a contamination spot check, so we wanted to know what people were putting out on their curb and if they are putting out the right materials on the curb,” said Dela Rosa.

“That way we can change our messaging and education pieces to be more deliberate and help residents with what they’re struggling with in the curbside program.”

The city also recently implemented radio-frequency identification (RFID) and a service verification system for collections.

RFID chips are installed on all of the collection carts to help the city improve its customer service for residents.

The chips track how many people are putting organic carts to the curb and how many people are putting out their waste carts each week.

Dela Rosa says the data will help determine if weekly collection is sufficient or if it can be optimized to switching to bi-weekly.

The verification system enables the service provider to confirm if a cart was picked up or missed during the route.

Dela Rosa says the city has also done a lot of really good work at t he la nd f i l l i n t e r ms of recovering materials including concrete, wood, clean fill and metal.

“We are only landfilling 27 per cent of the total amount of waste that comes into the site,” she said.

“We are going to be doing an integrated solid waste management plan in the next year and a bit to help us further identify what we can divert and what we can do as a city to protect the environment and divert more waste.”

been partly in reaction to China banning the import of certain types of plastic in 2018.

China is the world’s largest market for processed materials.

“Right now, we accept plastics #1 and 2, cardboard, and paper,” she said.

No longer accepted in the blue bag are nonrigid plastics #3 to 7 along with hinged plastic containers.

The city has also been asking residents to divert their shredded paper to their organics carts.

“The reason for that is, it’s more of an operational issue than anything else,” explained Dela Rosa.

“The recycling program largely remains the same, so 96 per cent of what we use to recycle, we are still able to recycle.”

Lloydminster will buck the national trend for virtual Terry Fox runs with its own socially distanced organized run.

The 41st annual fundraiser for cancer research will take place at Bud Miller All Seasons Park on Sept. 19 at 9 a.m.

People also have the option of taking on the run in their own way with members of their

family and friends with the theme, One Day Your Way, the same as last year.

Participants can also post their activities and photos online via #TryLikeTerry.

The organizing committee for the Lloydminster run is led by Jim Mcardle, who has posted a Lloydminster run page at www.facebook.com/groups/terryfoxrunlloydminster.

He encourages people to register online or

A table will be set up at Bud Miller for people who didn’t register online.

Terry’s maternal grandmother was Métis, so the shirt features traditional Métis beading representing the flow-

ers from the land Fox’s ancestors lived on.

The shirt message, “Try like Terry” is in English, French and the Métis traditional language of Michif.

Schools in Lloyd will hold their own Terry Fox runs in September.

All students learn that Fox was a one-legged Canadian runner who embarked on his crosscountry Marathon of Hope in 1980 to fund a cure for cancer.

He was forced to stop his run outside of Thunder Bay, Ont. because

cancer had appeared in his lungs. Fox died on June 28, 1981, at the age of 22.

The annual Terry Fox Run has become a fall tradition in Canada, with more than 650 communities, big and small, urban and rural, English and French, fundraising for cancer research.

To date, more than $850 million has been raised for cancer research in Fox’s name through the annual runs, held across Canada and around the world.

The Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce is set to roll out an allcandidates forum a week before the federal election.

The event will take place at the Lakeland

College cafeteria on Sept. 13 from 5:308:30 p.m. in two shifts.

Candidates in the Battlefords-Lloydminster riding will go first from 5:30-7 p.m. followed by candidates in Lakeland riding from 7-8:30 p.m.

The forum will be a hybrid event with guests who attend in person at the Lakeland cafeteria and live-streamed via the Chamber’s communication channels.

It’s September ... already?

And just like that, students are back in the classrooms and parents might get to breathe a sigh of relief as the kiddos are back in school.

I don’t know about you fine folks, but to me, it really feels as though we didn’t even have a summer!

Of course, we did have a summer, but it flew by in the blink of an eye.

Having said that, I must say, the Border City really came alive these past few months with events popping up, similar to Alberta’s COVID numbers when the pandemic first started to rule our lives. Is it too soon for COVID jokes?

I know we’re all pretty fed up and spent when it comes to talk of masking, social distancing and how long a Costcosized pack of toilet paper could potentially last, but guess what, it could have been much worse for us Prairie folk.

I’d say we had pretty relaxed government restrictions when compared to other parts of the country, and even with those restrictions, I’d say the Border City still had a pretty great summer.

As I mentioned in a previous column, this summer included some firsts for me. One of which was horseback riding ... you can take the kid out of the city, but you can’t take the city of the kid ... right? Wrong!

I also got out and played a couple of rounds of golf at Sandy Beach Regional Park, which was probably the most

fun I’ve had in a long time, while also being frustrated enough to channel my inner Happy Gilmore and perform his famous “Putter throw” (don’t forget this Sunday is the second and final Sandy Beach Summer Market for the season).

This was also my first summer since 2013 that didn’t include a trip to Ontario to visit my mom, brother, and other family I have back east. Sorry, mom, I know the lack of “Tay Time” is starting to get to you; in due time!

Maybe I’m the only one who feels they didn’t have much of a summer, after all, all work and no play makes Taylor a dull boy. But, the fact my line of work sometimes includes a weekend covering chuckwagons or baseball makes me love the job even more.

Leeway from Lloyd: Fox runs outlast expectations STAFF WRITER GEOFF LEE

It’s amazing the power or influence Terry Fox had on Canadians with his Marathon of Hope in 1980 to fund cancer by running across the country.

There are hundreds of runs around the world each year and more than $850 million raised to date for cancer research in Fox’s name.

The one-legged runner was forced to stop his run outside of Thunder Bay, Ont. because cancer had appeared in his lungs and he died on June 28, 1981.

When Fox died, his family passed the torch to us to keep the cause alive with an annual run.

Over 300,000 people took part in the first run on Sept.

13, 1981, raising $3.5 mil-

lion. I was one of them and completed a 10-kilometre route in Nelson, B.C. where I lived at that time.

I have several souvenirs from that initial run, including a completion certificate and my finishing time of 39 minutes and change on it.

Subsequent runs became mostly untimed participation events with the goal being to fundraise.

In the years that followed, I did a few other runs, including one in Calgary with the thought these events might have a lifespan of about 10 more years before they fizzled out.

Not even B.C.’s Rick Hansen and his 1985 Man in Motion world tour to make the world accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities, and to fund research for a cure for paralysis, could put a dent in the popularity of the Fox run.

The City of Lloydminster’s Social Programs and Services department will host a special event to recog n iz e t h e c o nt r i butions made by the many youth, organizations and community volunteers who participated in the 2021 Youth Graffiti Cleanup campaign.

This year’s proj-

ect saw the area of the 4900 block of 49 Avenue covered with two murals. The first being of traditional Indigenous elements such as animals, medicines and teepees. The second mural will include a cityscape with silhouettes of a skate park.

Following the presentation, the youth will have an opportunity to engage with members

of the various organizations and community members involved in this year’s graffiti cleanup program.

The event is taking place tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lloydminster Community Youth Centre, 4201 47 Ave.

“You mean, I have to kiss their butts?”

These were the loud and incredulous words my grandson hollered out in his sleep on our recent family getaway.

You can believe his grandfather and I asked him to explain this bizarre statement the next morning.

Sheepishly, he recalled the convoluted dream. He’d been vying with another buyer for the attention of two prize fish at the local pet store.

Someone had advised he try this unorthodox scheme to win the fish over to his side.

Although the suggested action was physically impossible, and highly objectionable (from the point of view of the fish—and the boy) the sentiment remained.

Kayden was prepared to do whatever it took to claim the slithery creatures for his very own.

Dreams are funny things. Over the course of a normal lifespan, a person is reckoned to spend six years dreaming, from anywhere between three and six times each night, yet seldom do we remember anything from these dreams.

Throughout the ages, people have questioned why we have them at all, and what, if anything, they mean.

Sometimes we have hypnagogic hallucinations, which are brief, involuntary and imagined experiences that occur between wakefulness and sleep.

I remember one, in particular, I had while driving for Bulldog Corral Cleaning. I hadn’t slept much the night before, but had been alert and feeling great until after lunch when a blazing sun warmed the cab of my truck.

As I motored slowly across a field, the spreader flinging a fine spray of muck into the afternoon breeze behind me, I found myself dreaming I was in Italy, driving an enormous cheese grater that scattered mozzarella across the biggest pizza in history.

Not a pleasant thought when you consider that I was, in fact, spreading a load of putrid manure across a stubble field.

I stopped immediately and ran around the truck a couple of times to bring myself back to wakefulness.

My husband had a dream that scared the life out of us.

He’d woken up in the middle of the night and had gone to sit on the sofa and read.

The book fell across his lap unheeded as he dropped back to sleep and dreamt he was on safari in the African jungle. Suddenly, a lion roared at him from a rock above his head!

Reacting in the only way that made sense to him in the dream, he lunged up from the couch, took a deep breath, and began beating on our daughter’s bedroom wall with his fists.

“ROAR, ROAR, ROAR!” he bellowed back at the beast. In the next room, Aliyah came up off her bed like she was under machinegun attack and dropped to the floor in fear and trembling.

Likewise, I leaped to attention and rushed from the room to see what in the heck was happening to the man.

Was he having some sort of conniption?

He stood in the gloom of the dimly lit living room in his pyjama pants, looking rather embarrassed.

Some dreams are ones we all have in common.

A few of the most popular are: falling, being chased, finding ourselves able to fly, or appearing naked in public. (Kissing the backend of a fish or roaring at lions wasn’t on the list, but not all dreams can be popular.) Sleep well!

Lloydminster oil output, second largest in Canada

A special edition of the Lloydminster Times in 1955 included columns showcasing the development of the oil and gas industry.

In June 1946, the Lloydminster field had a monthly output of 30,000 barrels and exceeded the area in

production.

This output skyrocketed the Lloydminster field to second place amongst Canada’s oilfields. There were 24 wells on the Saskatchewan side and 17 on the Alberta side.

To put the rising numbers in perspective, for the first three months of 1945 production was 2,000 barrels.

A year later from

April to June 1946 the total was 69,000 barrels. The ill-timed combination of the shortage of available storage space and poor distribution resulted in some oil wells being shut down.

A new refinery was expected to be fully operational in the fall.

This was welcome news to the oilmen.

The original plans included making

asphalt and tractor fuel as by-products of the heavy oil.

This tractor fuel would prove to be an immense benefit for farmers.

The refiners hoped to reach 150,000 barrels per month, although many felt it would take more than a year to get to this production level.

As soon as a market was confirmed, many proven locations were ready for drilling. Contracts were in place between the refiners and a majority of oil well owners in the Lloydminster area.

“The price is to be $1.20 per barrel. The CNR previously has paid $1.10 for its Rocky Mountain run.”

Lubricating oil was being imported into Canada, but there was a strong possibility it could be obtained from the area oil at some

point.

The Husky Refinery Co. planned to also drill wells and reserved 110,000 acres west and northwest of the Lloydminster field.

The cost for drilling shallow wells with depths of less than 2,000 feet was around $17,000 to complete.

In comparison, deep wells around the Foothills area were between $250,000 to $500,000.

With a growing presence in the oil industry, Lloydminster oilfields grew steadily as did our reputation in the production of heavy oil.

The Husky Oil & Gas No. 4 located near Lone Rock was the refiner’s first attempt at commercial production.

Their first exploratory drilling struck “both oil and gas and extended the potential field about 10 miles to the south and east.”

Mr. Messum spoke at a Board of Trade meeting with local and Calgary oilmen as their guests.

He shared how he had walked from Saskatoon to the new settlement of Lloydminster in 1903.

He hadn’t realized then that eventually there would be the discovery of a gas well just 100 feet away from where their wagon tongue was dropped.

Then a gas well blew in on Good Friday, March 1934 with such force the drilling bit was driven through the wood planks of the derrick. Each discovery helped to lead the way to a new era of development.

It was undoubtedly an enormous achievement and a truth that was stranger than fiction for the folks who dared to believe.

Time to reflect MIDWEST MINUTE VERN McCLELLAND

We s a t a r o u n d our (propane) fire on the deck last night with old friends discussing how c ra z y t h e s e p a s t t w o years have been.

I don’t need to go into the various stressors brought on by the pandemic, simply to say it has been hard to maintain normal connections with people.

The drought this year has brought added anxiety into rural districts, particularly for those who make their living raising livestock.

I don’t envy the cow/ calf producers who don’t have enough feed to take their herd through the winter.

Do you sell all or some of the herd at fire sale prices or pay a crippling cost for feed?

That is if you can. Many

can’t, particularly the younger ones just getting started.

My son and I were touring one of pastures this morning to check how our yearlings were doing on the remaining grass when I raised the prospect of this drought lasting another 12 months.

Not something you really want to think about, but a possibility which needs to be discussed.

This is not an unusual exercise for grain growers who often sketch out their plans several years in advance to prepare a proper rotation of crops to reduce losses from diseases and pests, plus of course, to optimize the commodity outputs from their land base.

So, business planning needs to go into next year, just when we think we may have the handle on what’s left of this one.

My phone is already starting to ring from landowners looking for input on the value of their land to discuss whether this is the right time to sell or to finalize their estate plan.

In the coming weeks, my team will be introducing a new type of tender system which is designed to improve the experience of both buyer and seller.

We have been working on the details with input from several local law firms and an appraisal group, plus having in-depth discussions with clients to see what they like, and what they don’t like, about the current process.

There are several ways to sell farmland and commercial properties; sealed bid tender, auction, and the Multiple Listing Service.

All have their pros and cons.

AgriRecovery program funding details for Sask MERIDIAN SOURCE STAFF

On Monday, Agriculture Minister David Marit announced details of the AgriRecovery program, now referred to as the 2021 Canada-Saskatchewan Drought Response Initiative. Applications toward the initiative were being accepted as of Sept. 1.

The Initiative will consist of two payments totaling up to $200/ head for cattle, with adjustments based on animal unit equivalents for other livestock.

The initial payment

will provide producers with $100 per breeding female equivalent in inventory as of Aug. 1.

Secondary payments will be up to $100 per breeding female equivalent in inventory as of Dec. 31.

“We are here to support livestock producers during this difficult time,” said Marit.

“We have worked efficiently to solidify initiative details and understand producers need financial assistance to help offset costs associated with herd management decisions. We are eager to

begin accepting applications for the Initiative on Sept. 1.”

Eligible livestock for the initiative include Canadian-owned female beef and dairy cattle, bison, elk, sheep or goats that are bred or intended to be bred.

The number of open replacement females that can be considered eligible livestock is 15 per cent of the total number of bred females.

Earlier this month, Minister Marit announced $119 million in direct support for drought-affected

File Photo livestock producers under the AgriRecovery program.

AgriRecovery is part of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership agreement, with funding

shared on a 60-40 federal-provincial basis.

The 2021 CanadaSaskatchewan Drought Response Initiative will provide financial relief to help off-

set the extraordinary costs livestock producers face related to the current drought, with a per head payment on female breeding livestock.

Rainy, cool weather throughout the prov-

ince delayed combining progress this week.

Harvest progressed to 29 per cent complete,

up from 20 per cent last week and well over the five-year average of 12 per cent.

An additional 21 per cent of the crop is now swathed or ready to straight-cut, ahead of the five-year average of 16 per cent. Producers would have rather had rain during critical stages of the growing season, but were happy to receive significant amounts of it this week.

Ninety-three per cent of winter wheat, 78 per cent of fall rye, 76 per cent of lentils, 81 per cent of field peas, 42 per cent of barley, 31 per cent of durum, 23 per cent of oats, 25 per cent of spring wheat and six per cent of canola has been combined.

An additional 30 per

cent of canola has been swathed or is ready to straight-cut.

Harvest progress is most advanced in the southern regions.

Producers in the southwest region have 43 per cent combined, the southeast region 30 per cent, the westcentral 27 per cent, the east-central 22 per cent, the northeast 25 per cent and the northwest 15 per cent.

Several large weather systems moved through the province last week, resulting in significant amounts of precipitation along with hail in some areas.

The Grenfell area received the most rain-

fall with 97 mm, the Moose Jaw area 77 mm, the Vanguard area 60 mm, the Jedburgh area 55 mm, the Harris area 50 mm and the Nether Hill area 46 mm.

The rain will result in downgrading of crops still in the field; however, it will benefit pastures and hopefully allow them to regrow for next year.

The cool weather and large amounts of rainfall across much of the province has helped with the hot and dry conditions, however, much more rain is needed to break out of the current drought.

Kevin Kusch, the Border City’s Mr. Baseball, was recently inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame with 11 other individuals across the province.

Originally from Prince Albert, Kusch, who was supposed to have his name added to the history books in 2020, attended the induction banquet in Battleford on Aug. 21 at the Alex Dillabough Centre.

The loving husband and proud father of three was inducted as an architect of the Lloydminster Minor Baseball Program over the past two decades.

it all boils down to the future of the sport as well as having fun.

“Throughout the tenure with minor ball, it was more or less trying to come up with ideas to make this game special for kids; the question was, how do we turn this into an activity they’re going to want to do for years,” he said.

“When you start talking to people and get like-minded people together with a vision, you can make things happen, and Lloydminster is a great city for that.”

Kusch also noted

those 18 years he spent with Lloyd minor ball didn’t feel like work as he loved working with the kids and fellow coaches and organizers.

“Baseball is a passion for me, so it’s all about bestowing that on kids,” he said.

“It’s about trying to find out what kids want, what families want from the sport, and catering to that.

“There’s a wide range of ball players in Lloydminster and area.

Some want to play recreational ball and others aspire to one day make the pros or go to college, and you have

to find a way to build a program for that.”

And build a program he did, which is how the Border City was able to get a Midget AAA ball team in the form of the Northwest Prairie Pirates, the city’s first team at that level.

“The kids guide you as to how far they want to take the sport, and you have to adapt to that,” he said.

“We have also always had an open-door policy with Lloyd minor ball, so if people had suggestions for us, we were always listening.”

A very humble man, Kusch explained the key to connecting with players over the years has been building relationships with them.

“I think you have to get to know them as people,” he said.

“They’re people first and ballplayers second, so when you get to know them and what makes them tick, it builds good relationships.”

A brief list of Kusch’s baseball achievements

includes: - in 2018, Kusch was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame - coached six Lloydminster Twins teams to Provincial Championships. Five of them were consecutive - was a Coach for two Lloydminster teams at Baseball Canada National Championships. In 2010, one of those teams won as the best team in Western Canada - founded the Lloydminster AAA Midget Northwest Prairie Pirates - lead the development, fundraising and construction of the Lloydminster Synergy Vault, an indoor baseball and sports training centre near Holy Rosary High School - worked closely, and in cooperation with the City of Lloydminster to upgrade many of the baseball diamonds across the city enhancing the game and the safety of players.

A little bit of rain wasn’t going to put a damper on Tuesday’s action at the Lloydminster Golf and Curling Centre.

The Lakeland College Rustlers took over the course as they hosted their annual golf tournament, with funds raised supporting the

college’s athletic programs and team trips to nationals.

Registration started at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

“This is our annual golf tournament that helps us raise funds for athletic teams, especially the teams that go to nationals, so that’s a huge part of our funding, and it usually costs

a lot of money to go to nationals, which is why we put this event on yearly,” said Sheray Thomas, coach of the Rustlers’ men’s basketball team and tournament organizer.

Hole prizes included 2021 Hyundai Veloster for a hole-in-one on Hole #4, sponsored

by Lloydminster Hyundai, a $2oo pro shop gift

card for the ladies longest drive on Hole #7, a putter for the longest putt on hole #9, $5,000 for a hole-in-one on Hole #13, sponsored by Harris Electric, a $2oo pro shop gift card for the men’s longest drive on Hole #14, and a hoop chip challenge on Hole #15.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have a tournament last year because COVID shut everything down, so we’re glad to get going again this year,” said Thomas, who has been the tournament’s organizer for the past six years.

“It feels great. This is a good mixer too; we have all of the athletes out here, including the men’s basketball team, which is my team. We also have women’s basketball, volleyball and soccer, so it’s a good mixer for the athletes, and it’s a good mixer for the businesses to meet the athletes and see what they’re looking like for the season.”

Thomas also noted it was great to be able to interact with the Rustlers’ sponsors, many of which are local.

lot of businesses from Edmonton and other places,” he said. “I think this is probably one of our better turnouts. We’re just over the 100-player mark, which is good. We’ve been a little bit lower than that the last couple of years, so it’s good it’s back running and people are supporting.

like this, our trips to nationals might not be possible due to the cost involved. To send one team to nationals would deplete the whole fund.”

Across the board, Thomas said he thinks the Rustlers will be pretty competitive this season and is hoping to send a team or two to nationals.

Obituaries & Memoriams

Church Directory EGGEN: Eivind Olav Eggen was born in Fåvang, Norway on November 24, 1922 and passed away on July 25, 2021 in the Lloydminster Hospital.

Eivind came to Canada with his family in 1929. His parents purchased land southeast of McLaughlin, where Eivind farmed until he retired. He and his sisters attended Crosslynde School until the age of 13, when they lost their mother and Eivind was needed on the farm.

Eivind married Doreen Cameron in 1948, and they spent the next 72 years together. They raised five children: Alan, Eivind, Catherine, Roy and Connie. When time allowed, he enjoyed playing hockey, ball, curling in bonspiels and in the later years, horseshoes. He finished his horseshoe days winning World’s in his division.

Eivind enjoyed his family of five children, 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

He was very proud that five generations of Eggen’s have lived on the original farm.

Eivind was predeceased by: his parents, Even and Magna Eggen; sisters, Rachel (Art) McLean, Berit (Cecil) Reece and Agnes McKay; and son, Roy Eggen.

Eivind will be sadly missed

by: his wife, Doreen; sons, Alan (Linda) Eggen and Eivind (Joyce) Eggen; daughters, Catherine (Martin) Willis, and Connie (Tim) Knull; 14 grandchildren, Heidi (Jay) Burzinski, Even (Kyla) Eggen, Kurt (Deanne) Eggen, Chelsey (Ryan) Zimmerman, Tyler (Pam) Eggen, Brenda (Connan) Kublik, Rebecca (Trent) Wennekamp, James (Tanya) Willis, Jens (Jen) Eggen, Kirsta (Alex) Fong, Jade Eggen, Daniel, Nathan and Breanne Knull (Josh); 21 great grandchildren, Jacob and Joe Burzinski, Matthew and Hunter Eggen, Emily and Joshua Eggen, Mason and Ryder Zimmerman, Brielle and Makynlee Eggen, Kira, Brysan, Evan and Rylan Kublik, Luke, Gabe, Paul and Ben Wennekamp, Ainsley and Taythan Willis and Lana Knull; along with many nieces and nephews.

Surrounded by his family, Eivind was laid to rest, beside his parents and son, Roy, at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS Eivind’s family wish to thank the staff at Hearthstone Place, for helping make the last 10 ½ years feel like home. To Dr. Govendor for his years of care and the nurses and doctors at the Hospital. To McCaw Funeral Service for their compassion and guidance. To all of those who made phone calls, sent cards and donations, delivered food and sent flowers. All was appreciated so much.

A Celebration of Life for Eivind will be held at the Legacy Centre in Lloydminster, Alberta on October 16, 2021 from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. There will be an open mic, in hopes that memories and stories will be shared about our dad.
