ARTS/CULTURE EXHIBITIONS Geoff Phillips: Plantscapes of the Prairies April 7 - 23 LCSC Created to bring more awareness to the unique landscapes of south western Saskatchewan, Plantscapes of the Prairies challenges viewers to take a closer look at their environments and to learn about the different species in the landscapes. Through capturing these vistas and landscapes, Phillips became interested in conservation, the role of the Parks and what they were preserving. His bold brushwork highlights seemingly underwhelming land, giving it colour in new ways for the public to experience. Many people rarely envision the species we walk on as having any artistic merit, interest or importance. The parks are very important in keeping rare species of plants and preserving the natural grasslands and forest ecosystems. Without these parks there would not be any natural land to explore for artists, but the real cost is to the ecosystems and animals they sustain.

May 1 - 31 LCSC Held in conjunction with National Youth Arts Week, this annual exhibit showcases local talent of artistic youth. Hosting a variety of mediums and subjects, with no limitations or competition, this show is meant to inspire, celebrate and share the creativity of our youth. Submissions will be accepted by the LCSC from April 18-28, 2020.
Arts Without Borders Fine Art Show June 5 - 28 LCSC Presented by Arts Without Borders, the Juried Fine Art Show showcases a varied offering of local and regional artists. This exhibition includes a Juried Show, a Photography Show and a Youth Show. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the voting of the People’s Choice Award while touring the exhibition. Don’t miss the chance to experience this visual arts opportunity, which is part of the Annual Arts Festival.

A Taste of Science April 28 – August 22 LCSC Have you ever wondered why food spoils? A Taste of Science highlights the role science plays in delaying food decay and keeping food nutritious and safe for us to eat. In this engaging experience, immerse yourself in an oversized “pantry” and discover what makes food spoil and different food preservation techniques. You’ll find lots to feed your mind and imagination on the menu!
July 6 - September 21 LCSC More than just a way to protect our bodies from the elements, our clothing is often used to represent our personality, points of view and how we express ourselves. Fashion is also affected by society - politics, war and pop-culture can drastically change how we dress. In this first-of-its-kind exhibit, explore the clothing and accessories collections of the LCSC and experience how fashion trends changed for our community’s early residents from the late-1800s through to the 1950s.
Produced by the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, this quirky exhibition will get audiences squirming at the sight of rotting food.

SPRING/SUMMER Program Guide
COURSES INSTRUCTOR PROGRAMS The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross Swim @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp, Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens and Red Cross Swim Adapted programs.
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) BAC The WSI Course includes four components: 1. O nline (20 hrs) Focuses on the theory of instruction through videos, virtual games, online activities, workbook exercises and knowledge evaluation at the end of each module. 2. Skills Evaluation (4 hrs) Ensures candidates have the necessary water safety skills, strokes and instructor emergency response skills equivalent to the Red Cross Swim Kids Level 10 performance criteria. 3. Teaching Experience (12 hrs) Candidates complete a minimum of eight hours; this allows candidates to have first-hand experience observing real progressions and swimmer skills with a mix of personalities. This gives them a frame of reference to reflect on the link to the theory of the course. Prerequisites: ▪ 15 years of age or older by the last day of the WSI – Classroom & Pool ▪ One of: Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard, Standard First Aid or higher, Bronze Cross (certifications do not need to be current) ▪ Perform the water safety skills and strokes to meet the highest level of performance in the Red Cross Swim Kids program
Candidates are evaluated on their knowledge and ability to apply the theory for effectively planning, teaching and evaluation of swimmers in the Red Cross Swim programs. Demonstrating skills, candidates complete a variety of practice-teaching exercises either with their peers or using actual swimmers in an existing program. WSI – Skills Evaluation: can be completed before, during or after the WSI – Online or WSI – Teaching Experience, but must be completed before attending the WSI – Classroom & Pool component. Candidates are evaluated on water safety skills and strokes to meet the highest level of performance criteria in the Red Cross Swim Kids program. Completed and signed Water Safety Instructor Skills Evaluation Worksheets remain valid for one year, if completing the skills evaluation prior to attending the WSI – Classroom & Pool component. WSI – Teaching Experience: complete a minimum of eight hours (total) of teaching experience (with 100% attendance and participation, including assisting a Supervising WSI in the water). The WSI – Teaching Experience is completed within six months of finishing the WSI – Online and before starting the WSI – Classroom & Pool component. Note, the Red Cross recommends completing an entire session, if possible, so candidates can follow swimmers’ progression from the first to the final lesson.

Skating Class Descriptions Parent and Child (Ages 2.5+) This program is recommended for children with little or no skating experience and who still require assistance to stand on the ice. The focus for this class will be teaching balance, posture and learning to stand up on the ice. Parents wearing skates must be comfortable enough on skates to physically support their child who may not yet be sturdy or balanced on the ice. Parents who are not stable on skates must have ice grippers on their shoes (limited supply available). Lil’ Skaters Step 1 (Ages 3+) To participate in this class, children are required to stand and walk on the ice with little or no assistance. It is an independent class where skaters are to follow instructions on the ice in a group setting. If the skaters are neither holding their balance on the ice nor following instruction, then the “Parent and Child” class is recommended. The fundamental movements of skating are being introduced in this class, including skating forward, walking backward, turning, stopping and jumping. Various activities such as action songs, teaching aids and group games are utilized to ensure fun and learning environment.
