arah essica Movie star, producer, fashionista, activist, wife and mother – we find out the truth behind the icon that is Sarah Jessica Parker Sarah Jessica Parker or SJP has not been an overnight sensation, having been a professional actress since the age of 10, joining a select group who have made the leap from child star to successful adult actress. Her likeability, quick comic wit, and “realness” have contributed to her longevity and appeal, making her a bankable star in a traditionally fickle industry. For many, she is indistinguishable from her Sex and the City character, however, there is more to her than the relationship columnist Carrie Bradshaw. Admittedly, she has played the role to perfection, winning four Golden Globe Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Emmy Awards. On comparisons to her character, she herself commented: “I have a team of style experts for being Carrie, but I am not Carrie. I’m not even much of a shopper. I don’t feel I need a lot of clothes.” Despite initial reservations about a television role, Sex and the City proved an instantly success and despite increasingly risqué storylines, she retained the strict no-nudity clause in her contract throughout the show’s run, eventually becoming a producer and subsequently executive producer of the show. She is a prominent member of the Hollywood’s Women’s Political Committee and UNICEF’s Representative for the Performing Arts; in 2006, she travelled to Liberia as a UNICEF celebrity ambassador and is also UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the USA.

Lloyds ‘Living the Dream’ was one of a select few publications invited to the McLaren technology centre in Woking to witness the launch of it’s new brand ‘McLaren Automotive’ and their first road car project, the MP4-12C. Upon arrival at the technology centre, we were greeted by a car park full of the latest supercars, most notably the new Audi R8 V10 Spyder, which has just been launched in the UK. From here, minibuses shuttled the guests via the LED lit road which circles the impressive Fosters + Partners designed building. The state-of-the-art centre is a sweeping wall of glass with what can only be described as a very ‘James Bond’ style lake which when viewed from above and combined with the building completes a full circle.

Reaching the entrance foyer and looking down through the futuristic building, the history of McLaren is mapped through a number of vehicles, from the iconic McLaren F1, through to Lewis Hamilton’s 2008 Formula 1 championship winning car. We were given a brief tour of the centre, highlights of which included the spotless production hall for the MP4-12C and a peep into the McLaren F1 research area. After being informed of the launch schedules, we had a brief period to take a closer look at many of the McLaren and McLaren/ Mercedes vehicles situated throughout the building. We took our seats for the presentation, which was streamed live online all over the world. The presentation included words from the McLaren CEO, chairman and former Formula 1 team boss Ron Dennis, who described his plans for the new Automotive brand and current F1 team boss Martin Whitmarsh who added details on the links between F1 and the MP4-12C. Following the presentation, the 150 strong audience were then given an unexpected treat when the new car was unveiled by the two McLaren F1 team drivers, and two most recent F1 world champions, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. McLaren is known for launching new cars in metallic orange, and the MP4-12C is no exception, an impressive looking vehicle with subtle links back to its older brother, the original supercar, the McLaren F1. However, the true hero was the car and we 30

are delighted to give you the low-down on a very impressive vehicle. The MP4-12C is derived from the same technology McLaren place into their Formula 1 cars. It is packed with innovations and the most cutting edge of automotive technologies. Ron Dennis stated “We have long held the dream of building a range of innovative McLaren sports cars. Sports cars that take the raw elements of Formula 1 principles, processes and performance and forge them into a unique package that adds the requirements of quality, efficiency, comfort and reliability – traditionally opposing goals that I know we can deliver.” The mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive ‘baby F1’ is aiming to go head-to-head with its two main rivals, the Ferrari 458 (as featured in LLTD issue 23) and the Mercedes SLS Gullwing. McLaren claims that the MP4-12C is lighter, more powerful and yet more environmentally friendly than either of its competitors. The MP4-12C is based around a single piece, carbonfibre ‘MonoCell’ structure that contains revolutionary hollow sections to reduce weight and increase strength. The Monocell is the first of its kind to be used in a production car and only weighs 80kg, some 25 per cent lighter than a comparable aluminium chassis. The structure is so rigid that it was used in

three separate crash tests without damage. To help keep the weight to a minimum, McLaren have also used ‘super light’ magnesium. To power their first production car for 20-years, McLaren has developed its own 3.8 litre V8 engine combined with two turbo chargers. The engine produces around 600bhp and 424lb ft of torque, allowing the car to accelerate to 124mph in less than 10 seconds and generate a top speed of around 200mph. The engine drives the rear wheels through two wet clutches and a seven-speed SSG Seamless Shift dual-clutch gearbox that is bespoke to the 12C. The Seamless Shift technology offers variable programmes ranging from ‘normal’ for road use and ‘sport’ for quicker changes still, right up to a lightning quick high performance ‘track’ mode. In addition, ‘automatic’ mode, ‘launch control’ and ‘winter’ modes can also be selected, the latter changing all electronic functions to suit low grip conditions and deliver maximum driver aid and support. There is no traditional manual transmission offered; the two pedal layout offers further scope to create a narrow, lighter, and more comfortable car.

The suspension for the McLaren MP4-12C breaks new ground, offering hitherto unseen levels of roll control and grip (an almost flat cornering attitude, depending on the Handling programme selected). Such behaviour appropriate for the race track would normally imply a rock-hard ride, but the 12C also delivers compliance and ride comfort more akin to an executive saloon car. The mix of occupant cosseting and sporting potential is truly unique. The 12C offers the driver both class-leading ride comfort and class-leading performance. The whole chassis package produces not only a unique relationship between ride and handling, but also astonishing lateral grip and outstanding traction. The 12C is poised and balanced whether negotiating high or low speed corners, during direction changes, under heavy or light braking and on tightening or opening corners. The trick behind blending such opposing objectives lies in the innovative ‘Proactive’ chassis control system, working from the car’s uncompromised geometry and weight distribution. The suspension is based on double wishbones with coil springs. The dampers are interconnected hydraulically and provide adaptive responses depending on both road conditions and driver preference. The Proactive system features driver-adjustable roll control which replaces the mechanical anti-roll bars that have been a standard feature of road cars 31

since time immemorial. It allows the car to maintain precise roll control under heavy cornering whilst decoupling the suspension in a straight line for excellent wheel articulation and compliance. Another feature that helps the 12C to handle at a new level is the development of an electronic system used by the McLaren-Mercedes-Benz 1997 MP4-12 Formula 1 car – Brake Steer. In essence, it is a system that applies braking forces to the inside rear wheel when the car is entering a corner too quickly to make the desired radius – supporting either a driver who has misjudged the corner, or an experienced driver trying to gain more exit speed from a corner. The cockpit of the MP4-12C has been designed around the driver, in a similar fashion to that of an F1 car, however the high quality finish of the interior is a long way away from that found within Lewis or Jenson’s cars. McLaren has added all the latest technologies to the cockpit of the car, including Wi-Fi, 7” touch screen panel, mp3 input, Bluetooth connectivity and an optional extra three exterior cameras which can record a track lap to the onboard hard drive.

McLaren aims to produce 1000 cars within 2011, and is currently developing a brand new production plant. The new MPC manufacturing facility will provide the perfect base to tailor make MP4-12Cs. It will have a clear McLaren style and will espouse all the virtues of the MTC. Like the Group headquarters, the MPC was designed by Fosters + Partners and great care has been taken to ensure that the building fits perfectly into its environment. Partnering the new production centre will be a worldwide network of dealerships focusing on luxury high-end customer service and aftersales. Following jobs at Chloe and Perry Ellis, Tom Ford made a name for himself in the fashion business relocating to Milan and landing a position with Gucci.

I remember clearly after graduating from university, my one overriding ambition was to own a Le Corbusier Chaise Longue LC4. If there is one aesthetic piece of contemporary furniture that any self respecting designer would love to own, the LC4 is it. This is in my book the ‘holy grail’ of modernist 21st century furniture design and the fact that the LC4 is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, pays testament to that. Le Corbusier was borne Charles Edouard Jeanneret, and is widely considered the most important Modernist designer of the 21st century. As a spirited advocate of Modernism, he created a range of chairs that express his ideals with great sophistication. The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 allows you to select from a variety of positions for guaranteed comfort. Chrome-plated frame structure and matte black steel base. Along with Walter Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe and Theo Van Doesburg, Le Corbusier was the father of Modernism. The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 is the best known and most successful of his designs that was first exhibited at the Salon D’Automne in 1929. This LC4 is finished in classic soft black Italian leather and is mounted on a highly finished tubular stainless steel frame. There is also the option, which is my personal favourite, the brown and white cow hide version. This piece of furniture has not dated in the slightest, and even today fits perfectly within any modern home. This is mainly due to Le Corbusier’s conviction that the binomial shape/ function value must be expressed in the three dimensional manifestation of any daily used and useful object. There is only one company in Italy, Cassina, that makes authentic Le Corbusier furniture. This piece is widely copied but only Cassina’s production of Le Corbusier designs is protected by an exclusive, worldwide rights license drawn up in 1964, when Le Corbusier was still alive. The LC4 produced by Cassina carries the signature of Le Corbusier and an authentic production number which indicates that it follows the precise manufacturing details and qualities as originally produced in 1928 by Le Corbusier. MANDARIN ORIENTAL HYDE PARK, LONDON

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London opened its doors in May 2000 following a £57 million restoration. The extensive work included: a luxurious renovation of the hotel’s 198 guestrooms and suites; the spectacular re-design of its restaurants and bar by internationally renowned designer Adam Tihany; new meeting rooms; and the creation of an exclusive spa, unique to London. Over a century after it first opened, the hotel is still London’s premier address. A London landmark and a “royal” hotel, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park has enjoyed a reputation as a great political meeting place for celebrated statesmen. A venue where princes and princesses, Maharajas and sultans, presidents and prime ministers have hosted high-level forums, receptions and society events. Royal Guests Members of the Royal Family have always been frequent guests - Queen Mary was a regular visitor; the Prince of Wales - later Edward VIII - came for society balls and most of his semi-official engagements; Princess Alexandra attended elegant dances; Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the late Princess Margaret first learned to dance here; Prince Philip held his polo and cocktail parties as well as often bringing Princess Anne and Prince Charles to tea when they were children; and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip were guests at Baroness Margaret Thatcher’s 80th birthday party. The Early Years Overlooking London’s finest Royal Park on one side and Knightsbridge on the other, the hotel was originally built in 1889 as a gentleman’s residence with lavishly furnished drawing and dining rooms, a billiard room and a smoking room.

A dramatically picturesque skyline was created using red brick and Portland stone in an eclectic Franco-Flemish style. Loggias were built to provide space for a pleasant summer’s evening lounge and promenade overlooking the park. Each of the first three floors was designed with four family suites and a bachelor’s suite. The upper floors were planned as single residences, however, more than half the tenants occupied two or more suites, with a certain dowager occupying six. A Royal Entrance As a gentleman’s residence the entrance to this magnificent building was through The Loggia, but in 1902 when it re-opened as Hyde Park Hotel, the postal address had changed from Albert Gate to 66 Knightsbridge. Tradition has it that the Queen would not allow any form of advertising within the Park, and therefore insisted that the main entrance, with the hotel’s name above it, should be moved from the Park side to Knightsbridge and that the original entrance be for Royal use alone. These were first used during the coronation of George VI in 1937 when the Crown gave special permission for guests to use the park entrance. Today, guests can still take part in this grand tradition of the hotel by requesting permission from the Royal Parks to use the ‘Royal Entrance’ for special occasions. Noteworthy Celebrations Spectacular parties that hold a special place in the hotel’s history include Lady Vyer’s silver wedding party in 1948 - and the legendary Balaclava Ball, hosted by the five cavalry regiments who had taken part in the charge.

Other celebrations have included the 1992 production of “Pavarotti in the Park”, the 1995 Anniversary of VE Day in which seven Heads of State and their delegations took up residence and ‘Party in the Park’, one of the largest music events of 2005 where many of the top acts made Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park their home away from home. Following its restoration and opening in May 2000, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park has been voted ‘Best Leisure Hotel in the UK’ and ‘Best Business Hotel in the UK’ by Condé Nast Traveller readers and has maintained five AA Red Stars for six consecutive years. According to the ancient Greeks, the letter ‘alpha’, the first letter in the Greek alphabet, was associated with the moon. It is no coincidence, therefore, that the Clive Christian Alpha furniture is fast becoming known as the “moonlight kitchen”. The integrated lighting system is designed to be a permanent feature when the natural light fades and electric light is too severe. Bespoke LED lighting is built in to emphasis the modular, freestanding furniture, creating the illusion of moonlight to stunning atmospheric effect. A unique feature of this style is the simple, wide surround that perfectly frames the furniture. The linear design of the cabinets is also reflected in the shape of the recessed chrome handles used throughout.The walnut finish, chosen for its’ warmth and depth, is laced with platinum leaf marquetry, creating a stunning contrast of dark and light. Central to the design shown is a large eccentric island unit with elongated trough sink. 102

Raised off the floor and lit to create a ‘floating’ effect, it features scrolled, hand carved corbelled legs with lions feet finished in platinum leaf, and end panels complete with matching lion’s head marquetry. Clive Christian then takes us right from the dark end of the spectrum to the opposite, with a smooth hand painted ivory finish, LED lighting in soft pink and white quartz worktop in keeping with the sleek design concept. Most recently revealed is the Alpha penthouse kitchen in grand style, seen here finished in Yew Antique Lustre with concealed plasma screen TV and Clive Christian monogram wallpaper in cream. The unique Alpha chandelier, created exclusively for the Clive Christian lighting range to complement this design, features smoke grey crystal droplets and platinum frame.

“I believe in beauty and elegance and communicating thoughts and dreams in a visual way. I started designing hats 15-years-ago while a student at the Royal College of Art. It was at a time when hats were perceived publicly as something worn by ladies of a certain age, and something from a bygone era. I thought this was totally ridiculous and simply believed “we all have a head, so everybody has the possibility to wear a hat”. I love to work with my hands making something from nothing - turning 2-dimensional material into a 3-dimensional object is the penultimate moment of creativity of my craft. I have had the greatest pleasure of having the opportunity to challenge people’s perceptions of what a hat should look like in the 21st century.” - Philip Treacy Philip Treacy has come a long way from the small Galway village of Ahascragh to become the legendary milliner he is today. Treacy studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin before moving to London to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art in London, eventually graduating with first class honours. It was there he specialised in hat design, as a guinea pig on the College’s first-ever hat design course. In 1991, at his graduation show he caused a fashion sensation, and it wasn’t long before his innovative and outrageous styles came to the notice of some of the world’s leading fashion designers. His extraordinary, exquisite headgear and enormous, flamboyant sculptures were soon seen alongside catwalk creations by top design houses including Chanel, Valentino, Versace and Alexander McQueen. In this same year, he established his own company and went on to win the title of Accessory Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 1991, 1992 and 1993, and again in 1996 and 1997. In 2000, he was invited by the Chambre Syndicale, the governing body of French fashion, to take part in the Paris haute couture shows, the first millinery designer to do so in 70-years. This reflected the high-esteem the industry held him in and also marked a major milestone in his career. His millinery designs have appeared on the heads of some of the most famous celebrities of our time. From Diana Rigg to Madonna, Joan Collins to Boy George, he has designed signature one-off pieces for a number of his famous client-base. The Duchess of York is just one of the many British aristocrats to have sported his headwear. In 2007, he was appointed as an honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) awarded by HRH Prince Charles and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in Clarence House surrounded by his family. The honour was conferred on Philip by Her Majesty The Queen in recognition of his services to the British Fashion Industry. Today, Treacy’s work has taken on legendary, artistic proportions and has earned the unique distinction of display space at both London’s V&A and the Met in New York. 107

The C.E.O. of cool With 40 million album Sales under his belt, Jay-Z is bigger than Presley, he cooly states that he has Obama’s mobile number and is famously quoted as sAying… “im not a businessman, I am a business, man!” Lloyds ‘Living the Dream’ takes a look at the man and the wisdom that took Jay-Z from the Brooklyn projects to millionaire penthouses, a vast art collection, and $20,000 bottles of wine. Shawn Corey Carter (born 4 December, 1969), better known by his stage name Jay-Z, is an American rapper and businessman. He is one of the most financially successful hip hop artists and entrepreneurs in America having a net worth of over $150 million in 2009. He has sold approximately 40 million albums worldwide, while receiving ten Grammy Awards for his musical work, and numerous more nominations. His greatest business successes has come from turning himself into one of the world’s biggest brands. Jay-Z co-owns The 40/40 Club, is part-owner of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and is also the creator of the clothing line Rocawear. He is the former CEO of Def Jam Recordings and one of the three founders of Roc-A-Fella Records and recently, the founder of his new venture Roc Nation. As an artist, he holds the record for most number one albums by a solo artist on the Billboard 200. Jay-Z has also had 4 number ones in America, “Heartbreaker” with Mariah Carey, “Crazy in Love” with his wife Beyoncé, “Umbrella” with Rihanna and his most recent, the brilliant and haunting “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keys. Jay-Z has established himself as an entrepreneur like his fellow hip hop moguls, and friends, Russell Simmons, Dr. Dre and Sean “Diddy” Combs, who also have business holdings such as record companies and clothing lines. In an interview, he stated “My brands are an extension of me. They’re close to me. It’s not like running GM, where there’s no emotional attachment.” 113

He is the founder of the urban clothing brand Rocawear along with Damon Dash. Rocawear has clothing lines and accessories for men, women and children. The line was taken over by Jay-Z in early 2006 following a falling out with Damon. In March 2007, Jay-Z sold the rights to the Rocawear brand to Iconix Brand Group, for $204 million. Jay-Z will retain his stake in the company and will continue to oversee the marketing, licensing and product development. In 2005, Jay-Z also became an investor in Carol’s Daughter, a line of beauty products, including products for hair, skin, and hands, as well as fragrances. Jay-Z serves as co-brand director for Budweiser Select and collaborates with the company on strategic marketing programmes and creative ad development. He provides direction on brand programmes and ads that appear on TV, radio, print, and high-profile events. He is a part-owner of the New Jersey Nets NBA team paying a reported $4.5 million for his share. In October 2005, he was reported in the UK as considering buying a stake of Arsenal F.C. but that deal did not come off, however it shows that for a rapper he has an accute business tenacity. You never know he may yet bid for an English football club. Jay-Z’s most public relationship has been with American R&B superstar Beyoncé Knowles, the former lead singer of Destiny’s Child. In 2002, Jay-Z & Beyoncé collaborated for the song “Bonnie & Clyde”. Jay-Z also

appeared on Knowles’ hit single “Crazy In Love” and as well as “That’s How You Like It” from her debut Dangerously in Love. On her second album, B’Day, he made appearances on the 2006 hits, “Déjà Vu” and “Upgrade U”. In the video for the latter song, she comically imitates his appearance. The couple generally avoid discussing their relationship, Beyoncé has stated that she believes that not publicly discussing their relationship has helped them and Jay-Z said in a recent article, “We don’t play with our relationship.” They keep a low public profile despite being photographed recently in Cannes. It is only recently that the world got to see her $5 million Lorraine Schwartz-designed wedding ring when she attended the Fashion Rocks concert in September 2008. Jay-Z has transcended all his origins and the world seems a different place since he was a child, he attended President Barack Obama’s party during the January 2009 inaugural festivities, the thought of rappers visiting the White House is ludicrous yet Jay-Z’s presence there feels appropriate especially as he is using his wealth in philanthropic activity. On 9 August, 2006, he met with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at the organiation’s headquarters in New York City. The rapper pledged to use his upcoming world tour to raise awareness of and combat global water shortage. Already on the look-out for a way to, in his own words, “become helpful”, he had been made aware of this issue during a visit to Africa. The effort took place in partnership with the UN and MTV, which produced a documentary entitled Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life.

Along with Sean “Diddy” Combs, Jay-Z pledged $1 million to the American Red Cross’ relief effort after Hurricane Katrina. He also addressed the issue of the Katrina disaster, and the government’s response, in his song “Minority Report”. Lloyds ’Living the Dream’ staff favourite Jay-Z moment has to be headlining Glastonbury, the very first rapper to do so, highly controversial a few years ago, which with the intervention of Noel Gallagher, became a battle for the hearts of the British music fan. With a superb performance that demonstrated his appeal he even did a version of ‘Wonderwall’ which immediately diffused Gallaghers small-minded attack; then demonstrated with his first song ’99 problems’ that he had a grip on rock dynamics. Jay-Z brings huge energy not only to his music but his business empire and will be playing two nights in London’s Hyde Park later this year, and headlining the famous Isle of Wight festival, a show which is sure to be the business, man!

RHODES Steph Brown chews the fat with celebrity chef Gary Rhodes

Celebrity, chef, restaurateur and author, are all labels associated with Gary Rhodes. His successful gastronomic career spans almost 30 years, establishing him as a household name, a regular personality on our TV screens and has most recently led him to the dance-floor with a brief, yet memorable appearance on Strictly Come Dancing and the expansion of his restaurant empire into Christchurch, Dorset. Since his graduation from Thanet Technical College in Kent, Gary’s approach to cooking with his fine attention to detail and exceptional mastery of the ‘Great British Classics’, has set him apart from other celebrity chefs of his generation. Michelin star winner Gary has a history of fabulous restaurants, all of which truly portray his culinary brilliance. Meeting up with Gary at his popular restaurant, ‘Rhodes South’ recently, I was able to take a first-hand look at his newest venture...

also allowing staff to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous exterior views. Sitting at the bar, Gary arrives; dressed in his classic chef whites and unmistakable, spiky hair do. The first and most obvious question… ‘Why Christchurch?”… “Back in 1981, I had a friend who was given the opportunity to be a head chef at a restaurant in Canford Cliffs. I helped him to get it started and absolutely loved it there. It whet my appetite for the South Coast, so it seemed like a good excuse to come back.” However, Gary is not new to Christchurch. In the same year that ‘Rhodes South’ opened, Gary launched his first restaurant in the area, ‘Kings Rhodes’; part of an extremely busy period, with ‘Rhodes W1’ being awarded a Michelin star (bringing Gary’s total to six) and also heralding the arrival of his nineteenth book ‘365’.

The building has a modern appearance, with wooden decking and a stainless steel balustrade. The entrance has large, walnut double doors that link the restaurant to the terrace. There is even a small bridge that connects the building to the car park at the front of the hotel. It’s certainly an eye-catching location, situated at the edge of the water, only five metres away from the Mudeford Estuary. The views are stunning and the setting truly peaceful and tranquil.

The menu that Gary has produced at ‘Rhodes South’ has elements of old and new, based on the restaurant’s extensive culinary range. The menu mirrors the location by offering diners the freshest seafood and fantastic local produce, presented in a uniquely ‘Rhodes’ style. Regional, seasonal and locally-grown food is important to the Rhodes brand, wherever the restaurant is located.

The sense of quality and occasion continues on the inside. The interior offers an attractive and impressive look, with modern and stylish furniture, providing enough seating for up to eighty guests to dine. There’s also a viewing panel in the kitchen enabling diners to see what is going on, whilst

Contemporary European Title. Gary is obviously very proud of these awards and beams with delight when congratulated. ‘Rhodes South has just appointed new head chef, Mike Jennings. Mike joins ‘Rhodes South’ after spending six years at Michelin Star restaurant, ‘Bohemia’ which is located in St. Helier on the channel Island of Jersey. So why did Gary choose Mike as his new head chef and what was it he was looking for in this role? “What you want is someone that you know is dedicated to their career. The thing I liked about Mike was that he used his words with passion. He just wanted to cook and has a true desire to be successful – and wants to carry on learning. That’s why Mike was the best person for the job”. With that said, is it the celebrity chef or the new head chef that decided on the menu choices? Gary explains, “To begin with I take control, however, I like input. Mike has made a good impression and I want to get him to get a feel of the concepts and throw in a little extra. He is included, but not in control.” Known for his passion for classic British cuisine, will Gary’s restaurant specialise in a more traditional menu, especially given its proximity to fresh fish and the central ethos of locally sourced ingredients? “British Classics is a huge statement and a very big title. Ingredients are the classic element. Yesterday I experienced a chef’s dream! Mike has discovered a local fisherman and I have never seen fish quite like it. 126

I thought, this is what I want to be serving up, something we can show off and which has come from our waters. Food just doesn’t get any fresher than this, buying straight from the boat.” With the interview nearing an end, I decided I couldn’t leave Gary without asking him whether he would consider taking part in any other future reality TV series after his somewhat ‘awkward’ performance on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ back in 2008. “No... I have been approached to do Big Brother and Dancing on Ice but it doesn’t appeal. The reason I took part in ‘Strictly’ was because I’d always wanted to dance like that. I would still consider taking it up as a hobby.” Thank God, I thought! On the evening of 8 April 2010, Gary hosted an exclusive Perrier-Jouet champagne dinner at ‘Rhodes South’, along with a champagne expert from Pernod Ricard. The evening consisted of six-courses based on a reputable menu, crafted and blended with some of the finest champagnes. The experts were also available to advise diners on the best way to appreciate the range of champagnes presented with each course. India Jane was originally opened in London over twenty years ago and during the intervening period its presence in the capital has grown to three stores, two in Chelsea & one in Kensington. Looking at the business model in 2009, it was decided by the family who own the company that they would explore the potential of franchising. The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the world’s greatest motor-racing events. Eric Witham caught up with Tom Doyle on his return from Monaco fresh with the roar of the F1 cars and the smell of burning rubber; Monaco 2010 was a vintage F1 year. Although we did not get a British driver on the podium, nobody could argue we had a great race. Mark Webber became the first Australian to win the Monaco Grand Prix since Sir Jack Brabham who won in 1959. Webber led a Red Bull 1-2 with his team-mate Sebastian Vettel finishing second, and put Webber into the lead of the world championship. “Absolutely incredible, for sure this is the greatest day of my life today,” Webber said immediately after the race. Webber led from pole to finish for his second victory in a row and fourth of his career. Staged around the narrow, winding streets of Monte Carlo, the main attraction of the Monaco Grand Prix is the close proximity of the cars to the spectators. The twisting 77-lap circuit offers incalculable opportunities for spectators to witness the thrill of screaming engines, smoking tyres and the genius of the drivers. The Monaco Grand Prix is not only about the race through the streets. It is also about the harbour, the yachts, the surrounding hills and the breathtaking views of the port and all the glamour that goes with it.

Tom and Ginny Doyle had a week’s well-earned break at the Royal Riviera at Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, overlooking the sparkling Cote d’Azur. An pleasant hour’s drive from Monaco. The Royal Riviera has beautiful pool, sun filled terraces, sandy beaches and stunning Mediterranean views. Tom explained they watched the Saturday qualifying from Casino square and other vantage points around Monaco and not only was the action exhilarating it was a chance to do a bit of celebrity spotting and shopping in the numerous boutiques. Tom and Ginny further explained that they had great views from ‘K’ stand right opposite the harbour and the million dollar yachts that are tightly packed in for race day. “We were so close to the action that they had to shout to be heard” said Ginny and Tom excitedly explained, “We got to see some fantastic racing …it was amazing” K Stand offers great views including the F1 cars exiting the Monaco tunnel and screaming downhill towards Tabac corner before accelerating in-between the glamorous yachts and the packed grandstands towards the swimming pool and the famous Rascasse corner at the end of the harbour stretch. Back at our hotel we relived the excitement of the last few days, the noise, the smell of burning brakes and molten rubber. A wonderful end to a truly memorable week. We are already thinking about our 2011 F1 trip. 138

Sea Events offer a professional, bespoke, nautical event management services for corporate and private clients. Lloyds ‘Living the Dream’ magazine spoke to founder Mark Everington about how he started the company. So Mark, how did you decide to go into business for yourself? 2007 was a big year for me and culminated in a major change of direction. I had been a Lloyd’s Broker for 26-years working for some of the world’s biggest Reinsurance Brokers. The hire and fire mentality was there for all to see and I fell “victim” twice, ironically the second redundancy occurred following the best appraisal report I’d ever had. Following this, I managed to become re-employed by the first company in a better role and with a better salary and great boss. So why did I leave? Well, for a start I wasn’t getting any younger and although fifty still seemed a way off - I had to admit that it wasn’t a million miles away. The job involved flying to Seoul on a regular basis and drinking copious amounts of “Sodu” the recreational drink of the South Koreans and this no longer appealed, least of all to my liver! Basically, I had taken the job as far as I had thought possible and while there were other parts of the world where life was more bearable within the Lloyd’s market, it would affectively mean starting all over again. I was convinced that the face-to-face negotiation, which has long been Lloyd’s tradition, would inevitably die out as more and more deals were struck on screen. I had considered a life on the ocean waves before but more on the sales side of things which most seemed to compliment my job skills.

How did you discover your love of boats? My love of boats had been discovered ever since my mother had first taught me how to sail in a 10ft clinker-built dinghy at the age of seven. A hot sunny Southampton boat show in 2006 would see me looking at much larger vessels but now with one thing in mind. ‘How to combine a passion with a job?’ I suddenly became very excited by the prospect of an entirely new career. I would buy a bigger boat and conduct corporate and private day charters based out of Poole. However, the prospect of running my own boat charter business seemed a much more exciting proposition. I managed to hang on until October 2006 when I handed in my notice to my surprised boss. He offered more incentives to hang around but quickly realised it was a futile gesture as I was after a goal that he could never grant me. I set off to buy the best boat within my budget, that would be both elegant yet practical and offer an excellent degree of comfort onboard. I would keep telling myself that it was NOT a toy - it was a business! Nothing matched the unbelievable amount of boat that was offered by Bavaria. It just stood out in everyway. The model I purchased was the 35 Sport at just under 40ft. On deck the large U shaped seating and rectangular table at the rear provide a comfortable seating area for 8 passengers, whether eating or enjoying the ride. While a double seat opposite the helm position ensures further capacity. I found no other boat this length that could match the entire downstairs area both in terms of headroom and overall space and it has the largest cabins in its class. How did you come up with the name for the business? I was looking for a name that would most representative the business that I would be doing on the water. Then it came to me – “Sea Events”. So I googled the name

and to my astonishment “Sea Events.co.uk” was for sale. I couldn’t believe that such an obvious name hadn’t been snapped up. I bought the domain name immediately and set about building the website www.seaevents.co.uk which has been continuously updated since it came on line in late 2007.

What plans did you put in place to start the business? By May 2007, I had sold my house and bought another in the New Forest, left my job, taken delivery of the Bavaria and gone “back to school” at Powerboat Training UK (Poole) to become a qualified RYA Commercially Endorsed Powerboat Skipper by May 2008. “Sea Events” was ready for business that same year.

How have you seen the business grow and how has this affected what you can offer? In June 2009, the licence was increased from 8 passengers to 12, which greatly increased business interest as well as offering fantastic value for money at just £120 per head for a full-day charter, (based on 10 people sharing excluding food and alcohol). Or £80 per head for a half-day charter, (based on ten people sharing excluding food and alcohol). The Bavaria has more than proved itself as a very comfortable entertainment boat, as well as a good sea boat for all occasions from corporate entertaining to family cruises down the Dorset Jurassic coastline. What sets you apart from the competition? At Sea Events, we also provide an extensive food menu, which marks us out from the competition. Tony Beale at Beales Gourmet catering in Canford Cliffs provides an outstanding quality of foods for all occasions and is quite simply excellent. The pre-ordered food is from a choice of six menus ranging from buffet food from the “dash & splash” menus, through to the “World Cruise” menu which is not for the faint hearted.
