Hyde Yachts can not only find just the boat for you, but can also act as a bespoke travel service, arranging charter flights through their affiliated jet operators, as well as organizing excursions, on board entertainment, and anything else to make your holiday at sea perfect. For a real taste of decadent boating, RM Elegant has proven the yacht of choice for high profile parties and celebrations. This purpose-built charter yacht was built in 2005 in Greece, and hosted George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts et al during the launch party for Ocean’s 13. Wayne Rooney thought it a romantic setting for his first night with Colleen as a married couple, and P Diddy is also a recent guest, so you will be in good company. RM Elegant is one of only a handful of yachts that can accommodate 30 guests, which means it has ‘passenger status’, and spends 10 weeks a year on charter for both corporate and private events. As it is such a large vessel, it not only cruises the Mediterranean, but also the Caribbean waters around the Maldives and Seychelles, and comes fully equipped for spa treatments, jet skis and a speedboat. If spending time on this amazing piece of engineering isn’t enough, and you want something just that bit extra special for an event or celebration, entertainers and musicians can be arranged. For example, one property developer wanted different musicians available in different locations, and Hyde were able to arrange everything, including the vocal talents of the wonderful Beverley Knight. The boat comes fully crewed (31 with their own quarters), including a world-class private chef. If you should feel the need for a little extra pampering, chefs like Tom Aitken can be flown in to cater for individual events. So what about looks? RM Elegant is true to her name. With her futuristic profile she stands out in any harbour. The sundeck has a 12-person Jacuzzi directly accessible from the outside cocktail bar, sunbathing and entertaining area and shower rooms. The bridge deck saloon mixes traditional ambience with state-ofthe-art entertainment systems. The main saloon is finished in brushed oak with marquetry inlays, silk curtains and classical furniture while the art deco dining room can seat 30 for formal dinners. From the gymnasium to the home theatre, multiple watersports toys and passenger lift nothing has been overlooked on this extraordinary vessel.

About Hyde Yachts So how does chartering work? Hyde yachts have access to over 1,000 yachts globally: that’s every yacht that is charterable, from Australia, Asia, Thailand, Seychelles, Maldives and beyond. The customer enquires about where they want to go, when and for how many people, and Hyde find a selection of boats in area, or can arrange to have a specific boat delivered. They can then take care of all other arrangements from flights, to entertainment, and even security. Sometimes they might be required to make top secret arrangements for royalty, heads of state or film stars, which necessitates the presence of trustworthy security and utmost privacy. At your request, the yacht will take you wherever you want to go: away from crowds, away from politics, away from clocks and diaries, or, if you prefer, into the heart of the action. Whatever your destination of choice, enjoy it from the luxury of your private floating hotel with the ocean as your swimming pool.

The next generation of Jaguars, witnessed by the stunning new XF, are already pushing the boundaries of modernity that the XK broke through, and new cars will add in new relevances, such as environmental responsibility. Alongside these product issues, earlier this year Ford sold Jaguar and its sister company, Land Rover to the Indian car manufacturer, Tata. Despite the change in ownership and the current uncertain financial market Ian Callum is confident Jaguar will be around for a long time to come. He says he and his team have exciting plans for the future: “The focus will be on design and performance. ‘Fast, beautiful cars’ is our in-house tagline, so they will continue to be very beautiful, but more importantly they will be very modern and very contemporary. It’s my objective that within five years Jaguar will be noted for producing the most contemporary cars in its class. I think that will be a surprise for some people coming from a very traditional background. For so long now I think Jaguars have been seen as being quite traditional. DISTINCTIVE INSPIRATIONAL OPULENT REVOLUTIONARY IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO SPICE UP YOUR WARDROBE THIS WINTER, WHETHER FOR UNFORGETTABLE EVENING WEAR, OR DAY WEAR WITH ATTITUDE, GALLIANO’S LATEST COLLECTION FOR DIOR SHOULD KEEP YOUR CREDIT CARD WARM.

T

HE HOUSE OF DIOR is renowned for its ability to ride the ups and downs, and rise like a phoenix from both global and personal disaster. From the stock market crash of 1929, which ruined his family’s finances, to the iconic ‘New Look’, which

heralded a new post-war optimism in 1947, Christian Dior has always found a way to turn fortune on its head and set trends for others to follow. With Dior’s untimely death in 1957, the figurehead of the business may have been lost, but his is still the name on everyone’s lips. Few words conjure such an image of elegance and style, and the House of Dior maintains its place in the highest echelons of haute couture. Dior counted among his high-profile clients women as stylish and diverse as Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, the Duchess of Windsor, Elizabeth Taylor and Evan Peron and was remarkable on the world fashion stage as one of its most adventurous and prescient players. Stars continue to be enchanted by Dior under its new design inspiration, and the latest collection is no exception. Billed as an excursion into the ‘optimism and opulence’ of the Sixties, John Galliano’s latest collection is a glamorous trip down memory lane. Luxurious fabrics and striking silhouettes define the Haute Couture, while the Ready to Wear collection is all about striking a pose in bold colours and prints to chase away the winter blues.

INTELLIGENT SOUND 36

Living the Dream

AUDIO ICON BANG & OLUFSEN HAS LAUNCHED BEOSOUND 5, A MASTER-CLASS IN DIGITAL MUSIC. THIS LATEST INNOVATION IS AN ICON IN THE MAKING, OFFERING THE EXPECTED HIGHQUALITY DIGITAL MUSIC EXPERIENCE WITH EXTRAS THAT WILL ADD MORE THAN A FRISSON OF EXCITEMENT TO YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE.

W

E are living in a digital world where our experience of sound is quickly disappearing into music players as small as the sound they are able to play. But all that is about to

change. Designed to make music much more visible and with a sound that is nothing less than outstanding, BeoSound 5 from Bang & Olufsen brings music out into the open to listen to and enjoy with others.

Perfectly synchronized An icon of elegance and intelligence, BeoSound 5 gives you instant access to your music. Seamlessly integrating the old world into the new, the navigation wheel into the digital screen, this audio master makes the digital world tangible and real as the physical and virtual movements of the user interface are perfectly synchronized. The aluminium wheel and pointer mounted on the side of BeoSound 5 give users complete control over their content and all on-screen actions. This also facilitates one-hand operation for optimal ease-of-use and an astonishingly tactile experience. While the aluminium wheel lets you scroll swiftly through your music collection and countless internet radio stations, the graphical user interface is at once intuitive and inspiring. A clever combination of graphics and mechanics, BeoSound 5 provides an easy way to overview and navigate large amounts of content. Make a selection and every move you make is mirrored on the screen in an aesthetic array of colours, fonts and carefully choreographed graphic displays. By selecting only the necessary elements and giving them an elegant presence on the screen, Bang & Olufsen provides you with only the features you need, combining ease-of-use with a surprisingly sensual experience.

‘More of the same’ BeoSound 5 appeals to your instincts and desires. It is designed to make you want to come closer and play with your entire music collection. It also has some special ways of letting you get much more out of your music, like for instance the algorithm called MOTS (More Of The Same). An award-winning concept with two patents pending, MOTS takes you to the cutting edge of convenience. With MOTS, the intelligent playlist of the future, playing a song is like planting

a seed. Whenever you start playing your favourite music on BeoSound 5, MOTS automatically scans your library and finds similar tracks based on parameters such as rhythm, syncopation, key tonality and vocal harmonies. As the algorithm uses the actual music, not just the genre or mood tags, to match tracks, MOTS effectively lets you rediscover the hidden gems of your record collection on the basis of your initial choice. Every time you sow a seed, MOTS responds by playing selections that are musically similar, taking you on a musical journey, which is more than likely to please and surprise you. Not only will you rediscover tracks that you had long forgotten, the journey will also hold subtle surprises and unexpected choices, which will only serve to make it all the more interesting. Variation within the boundaries of your choice is the spice that will bring a new dimension and new life to your music collection.

leaving the opera he would not have been punished. But once you get a tag for liking a taste of the high life it is hard to shift it. There was also the assignation with a Cheeky Girl and a reported fling with a girl, named Larissa, who was called Darren before a sexchange, that led to merciless ribbing on the training ground and in the press.

T

O THE casual observer Danny Cipriani is the sort of bloke to whom everything comes easily. Good looks, model girlfriend, at the moment Kelly Brook, and a seemingly God-given talent on the rugby field all combine to make him the type of man who makes the rest of the male sex turn a ghastly shade green

with envy at the mention of his name. There were a lot of spectators turning green – and it was not with envy – when Cipriani’s life was shattered in May by a horrific ankle injury that saw his foot splayed a right angles to his leg. The injury, about as bad as it can come in rugby, put the fly-half out of England’s summer tour to New Zealand, and the initial prognosis, once he had had four pins put in the joint, was that he would be out for six months. He was a certainty for that trip with Jonny Wilkinson, also injured, but faced a lay-off that would knock the stuffing out of most young players. Cipriani’s dramatic recovery gives a hint to what is behind the man. He was back in action in just over four months – defying medical experts – thanks to that age-old remedy, sheer hard work. Cipriani might be photographed regularly in nightclubs with a goodlooking girl on his arm but there is rarely anything stronger than pineapple juice sitting in front of him. And he is quick to hit back at the carpers who said his celebrity lifestyle contributed to his being dropped from the England side for the final international of the autumn against New Zealand. It seemed he might have been rushed back into the side too quickly. He was previously left out of the team for the Six Nations game against Scotland after being snapped leaving a nightclub but again had not been drinking and was only dropping some match tickets off to friend. Naïve certainly but unlikely to affect his performance on the pitch. But once the red-top photographers know what you look like it is hard to escape their lens short of locking yourself in your room. “I did get a lot of banter,” he says. “But it’ll be forgotten about. I wasn’t proud of it but the only thing I was upset about was my mum having to read it.” And the critics were at it again following the beating by South Africa. It was Brook’s 29th birthday and although she reportedly entered into the spirit of it all at a West End nightspot, Cipriani stuck to the soft drinks. You wouldn’t have seen Jonny Wilkinson out after a match England had just lost 42-6 but everyone is different and that is the beauty of rugby. Even Jake White, the man who coached South Africa to the World Cup chipped in saying Cipriani had done more in the West End than on the rugby pitch. Cipriani said: “What celebrity lifestyle? It was my girlfriend’s birthday. I’m going to go out with her, aren’t I? Every single one of the players went out ... you’ve still got to enjoy yourself. “Just because I was photographed doesn’t make me a celebrity. I’m just very lucky to have a gorgeous girlfriend. I wasn’t drinking, I was back home early. It’s an easy stick to use but there is no celebrity lifestyle. Like I said, I’m just lucky in my choice of girlfriend.” Cipriani’s dedication to his sport is backed up by his coach at Wasps Shaun Edwards, a notoriously hard taskmaster and a former rugby league star who had his taste of the limelight as a player when he was married to Heather Small the lead singer for the band M People. As Edwards says: “He’s one of the most dedicated lads I’ve ever come across. Time off is time off... some people are just luckier with their time off than those of us who just take the dogs for a walk. I never pulled birds like that.” Lawrence Dallaglio, himself no stranger to serious injury or

It seems Anne Cipriani is the only person around who can strike fear into the youngster. THE NEW BMW X6 IS A FLAVOURSOME CONCOCTION OF POWER, DESIGN AND EFFICIENCY. FAR FROM THE STEREOTYPE OF ‘CHELSEA TRACTOR’ ON A SCHOOL RUN, THIS IS ONE CAR THAT YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY ‘SHOW AND TELL’.

absent-mindedly picking your nose, because your nasal ablutions will end up on numerous camera phones. Why is the X6 such a draw? Because BMW has taken the comforting foursquare proportions of the SUV and wedded them to a sleek coupe roofline. This could be a disaster, some automotive Blumenthalian concoction of snails and ice cream but instead it looks spectacular, muscular, sporty. It bulges out from the wheelarches, sitting on wide, low profile wheels, and surrounded by a smattering of gaping air intakes to cool the engines. But above the doorline is where the real drama takes place because instead of a big square glasshouse, is a BMW 6 Series, with squinting dark windows and

as a confluence of global financial meltdown and global climate

Living the Dream

It means you can buy an X6 and enjoy the pleasure without any guilt. The tremendous 3.0 diesel engine produces a hefty 235bhp, but manages 35mpg – a combination that no other manufacturer can touch for a car of this size. The other engines are even more spectacular with the twin turbo xDrive35d a triumph of engineering: diesel economy of 34mpg with smoothness, revvy ability and serious pace managing 0-62mph in less than seven seconds. Gorgeous. The X6 xDrive35i is powered by the twin-turbocharged 2007 and 2008 International Engine of the Year winner that produces 306hp, which is 89

capable of propelling it from zero to 62mph in 6.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph. At the top of the range is the all-new 4.4-litre V8 engine producing 408hp, called the xDrive50i. How fast is this? Well it will reach 60mph from standstill quicker than a Porsche Boxster, in 5.4 seconds. So you’ve got the wild looks sorted, and it is replete with a range of engines that offer performance and economy. Unfortunately the one thing SUVs are always a massive let down about is the way they drive. The BMW X5 is probably the best handling, but they are big, heavy, high things which means that most handle with all the deft of a cow on a skateboard. The X6 is very different. Very different indeed. So different that you have to recalibrate your expectations. The xDrive chassis it uses actually directs more power to wheels when it senses slippage. You and I, and every other car on the market lift off the gas and brake when things start to go a bit pear-shaped. The X6’s system redirects power to the wheels that will drive you through the corner or keep you accelerating in a straight line, correcting any slipping, just as Lewis Hamilton would. Add in state-of-the art suspension systems and precise, weighty steering and what you have is a car that handles like no other car in its sector, skating round corners with mind-bending ease. Surely something this big shouldn’t feel this small and precise? The school run will never be dull again. Just don’t give the kids a big breakfast. If your brood has taken on Walton proportions, you might find the X6 is not for you, because with only four seats the X6 is not a car designed for mundane and workmanlike practices. Although the cabin is typical high quality BMW fare, there are only two seats in the back, and for adults there isn’t much headroom thanks to that roofline. And because of that roofline, bootspace is compromised too. The things we put up with for fashion. There is something utterly brilliant about the X6. Those that criticise the practicality issues of boot space and the like completely miss the point. If those things really matter, buy an X5, a very fine car in its own right, instead. Rather than being compromised, BMW have refused to compromise at all with the X6. It wanted to build something unique, and it has. The X6 is a purchase for those who love it, who find its individuality and bold flourish suits their own character. It is what it is. And what that is, is stupendous, in every sense.

Sports Utility Vehicles are… as popular as a Russell Brand stand-up show at a Saga evening

WHEN YOU MOVE IN TO A NEW HOME, IT’S GREAT TO HAVE A BLANK CANVAS TO WORK WITH, BUT WHAT IF THAT CANVAS LEAVES YOUR MIND BLANK TOO? TIME TO CALL AN INTERIOR DESIGN TEAM TO YOUR RESCUE

two clients priceless transformations of their abodes, with the team able to take the strengths of the properties and give them a unique, but warm setting.

One recent client took on the services of BoConcept Bournemouth’s interior

designer Tom Clintworth after buying a home and needing it decorated from top to bottom. For Tom, it was a chance to flex his creativity, while also offering advice that worked within the client’s guidelines. He said: “I suggested a home visit after Mr Melville came into the store and said he pretty much needed everything for the home. “The beauty of doing this was that we were able to see exactly what was needed and by visiting the house, we were able to see what would work and what wouldn’t.” The first challenge for the home came from the client’s wish that the house would be light, but still able to cope with the rigours of children running about. Tom said: “Children can be messy – by accident as often as by design – and darker colours can be better for hiding that, but Mr Melville’s home was bathed in a lot of natural light. “We worked out that in the sitting room, almost half of the walls were windows, which made it a very bright area – and as such one that would pick up everything.” The client also wanted a home where his guests would feel comfortable, whilst still reflecting his personal taste. This was most apparent when it came to designing the dining room. It may have seemed unusual for Tom to ask how often he had dinner parties and how many people attended, but it’s that level of detail that helps create the best home possible. Tom said: “It might have seemed a strange question, but by knowing this information we were able to work out what was the best kind of dining room table.” He chose the Occa 4300 round dining table, which offers more flexible seating space than a tradition square design. This one-of-a-kind piece of furnishing includes a functional yet attractive turntable. Brown Zarra leather chairs completed the look for a room that was both functional and contemporary. Again, it was attention to detail that helped decorate the living room. By asking how often the room would be used and who would be there, the client was able to pick a luxurious, comfortable sofa that was contemporary yet practical. A sleek and dramatic black sofa with stitching details on the cushions and

adjustable back cushions for extra comfort was chosen. The functional coffee table provides storage for books and remote controls and the movable tops double up as TV dinner trays or can even hold a laptop. When it came to the bedroom, BoConcept’s strengths came to the fore as the client picked from three different ranges. Tom said: “With a lot of companies, if you picked from three different designs, it would look like a horrible mishmash – no matter how good the designer was. “However our ranges are designed to be modular and flexible and they all coordinate because there are many possible configurations of beds, night-stands and chests of drawers with a wide choice of legs, handles and headboards – allowing customers to choose a design that works for them.” “Overall, working on the house was a joy because the client was serious about using BoConcept’s interior design expertise.” “He listened to our opinions and understood our explanations for our suggestions and we looked to work together to get the most beautiful possible house.” “What he appreciated was that like any good investment, choosing the right piece of furniture needs careful thought and consideration.” “However, by taking measurements and putting it all into ‘Furnish’ – our software – we were able to play around and look at a number of concepts, taking in different colours, prices and designs.”

94

Lloyds

Living the Dream

“What the client was particularly impressed with was that with the software, he was able to see how much space the furniture would take up and play about to see where it would look best.” “But the thing to remember is that while we are trained in the latest styles, it’s not about telling the customer what they should get, it’s about advising them and seeing what they want because every person is unique – and similarly, every person’s taste is different.” “What we like to do is show the best options and then, once the client has

made their decisions, work with them on tailoring it, so that their home looks the best it can.” “To us, it’s not just a case of ‘take this, have this colour and put this over there’ – it’s an ongoing relationship because this is about people’s homes and that’s something that is very emotional and involving to people. You want the best for your home because it reflects a lot about you and we’re here to bring out the best in each home and the owner’s personality.” “I must have done a good job because the client ended up so excited about what we had created that he brought the family into the store to see everything – he was so excited he couldn’t wait until it was delivered.” Another client who recently benefited from the BoConcept team brainstorming and coming up with décor suggestions were Colin and Patsy Berry – but there couldn’t be a home visit to aid the design process as their home wasn’t finished yet. According to designer Rachel Pearce, it wasn’t too much of a challenge to work around. She said: “Using our software and getting the measurements we were able to show the couple how everything would look, which was very important as they had stressed they wanted a lack of clutter in their new home.” What also helped was that they had already decided that they wanted neutral colours - either black or brown and then decided that black would be too austere. The couple wanted a contemporary look, but wished to be able to incorporate some of their favourite and most personal oriental pieces. Rachel added: “From the plans it was a lovely-looking home they were moving into, but the sitting room was an unusual shape. “Again ‘Furnish’ helped out as we were able to see a number of options in the right colour scheme and dimensions.” When helping to pick BoConcept furnishings, the software also showed the couple that they wouldn’t be able to have large units around their TV area. Rachel said: “‘Furnish’ isn’t just about showing you where BoConcept furniture can go; it’s a fantastic tool for planning out every aspect of a home and seeing how it can look.” BoConcept’s professional interior design service is free and available to everyone – just book a visit with one of their skilled interiors consultants in store to help you create your home, your way. Like any good investment, choosing the right piece of furniture needs careful thought and consideration so take your time and let the experts help you get it just right. AMERICA’S WORLD-FAMOUS HAUNT OF PRESIDENTS, ROCK STARS AND THE CREAM OF HOLLYWOOD’S GLITTERATI IS THE HOME OF MINKTRIMMED SKI SUITS, AND THE BEST-MANICURED SKIERS AROUND. BUT DELVE A LITTLE DEEPER AND YOU WILL DISCOVER THAT THESE A-LISTERS MIGHT BE THERE FOR MORE THAN JUST A PHOTO OPPORTUNITY. THE REAL STARS HERE ARE THE MOUNTAINS, THE SNOW AND THE BREATHTAKING SKIING.

making skiing both on- and off-piste a divine experience. Unlike the grey, craggy scenery of many European resorts, Aspen’s forests reach almost to the mountain tops, giving you the luxury of tree-lined runs and fantastic gladed adventures. Anyone familiar with European skiing, will be used to queuing for lifts and battling for space on the pistes. In Aspen you can leave those memories behind. The sophisticated lift system can carry 6,500 riders an hour. But statistics show that, on average, there are just two to four skiers an acre. Where do they all go? Experience this and it’s hard to imagine ever returning to the madness of Europe’s skiing equivalent of the rush hour. You can often have whole runs to yourself, which can leave you wondering if you’ve missed a ‘trail closed’ sign at the top. Get there first thing in the morning and it’s possible to ski your favourite run two or three times and see no-one except the lonely lift attendant at the bottom. With each mountain having its own personality, whether you fancy taking it easy, or testing your technique, it’s easy to pick and choose. The ski-bus can take you wherever you want to go, and there’s no need to carry those pesky skis around. For a nominal charge, skis and boards are whisked away to your chosen mountain, ready for the next day’s challenge. This, and other niceties such as complimentary

Aspen Mountain – Ajax The original mountain that put Aspen on the world skiing map in the 1940s. In the heart of downtown, it would be easy to forget about skiing and just spend the day shopping and people-watching in this picturesque Victorian mining town. But get up the mountain – it’s worth it! You’ll find black diamond glades, bumps and finely manicured pistes. Aspen Highlands The most challenging mountain of the four and, indeed, of North America. It does have great groomed, cruising runs that flatter your style, but it’s best known for its abundance of expert terrain and back bowls piled high with glittering powder. Buttermilk The name hints at a pleasing, gentle experience, and that’s just how it is. This is a mountain for families and beginners, with wide open, gently rolling trails. If you fancy a go at powder skiing, but don’t yet have the technique to carry it off, this is a great place to practise. The powder is there in bucket loads, but the gentle incline is forgiving. In contrast, the fearless can pit their wits against the legendary terrain park – home of the Winter X Games.

when taking a breather.

Off the beaten track Aspen has a few treats in store for anyone willing to go off the beaten track and explore. First Tracks This one is easy. It’s all laid on for you – all you have to do is get up early. If fresh snow is forecast during your stay, make sure you book in for First Tracks at Aspen Mountain or Snowmass. You can get up the mountain before the lifts open to the public, fill up with breakfast at a mountain-top restaurant, and then be the first to leave your mark on the fresh powder. Numbers are limited to 10, so there is room on the fresh stuff for everyone. To be the first one down an expanse of virgin snow is an experience you will never forget. As you look back up the slope, you can kid yourself that your tracks are as perfectly formed as those on the postcards in the gift shops. Longshot at Snowmass This is the resort’s longest run at 5.3 miles, skimming the boundary of the ski area to the 100

Just as you think you must be nearly there, you reach a sign in the trees announcing that you are just a quarter of the way down, and it hits you just how long this run is. Don’t rush to the finish. Pack a snack, grab a bench on the way down and sit for while. Marvel at the tranquillity. Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands This one is not for the faint hearted. Skiing in the back bowls of any resort is a treat. You expect a bit of a trek, but are rewarded with freedom and

acres of barely touched powder. Part of what makes Highland Bowl stand out above the rest is what you go through just to get there. From the top of the Loge Peak and Deep Temerity lifts it’s skis off, head down and walk. The smart guys cadge a lift on a snow cat, but that will only get you a little way up. You still have to walk to reach your reward. The top of the bowl is at 3,777 metres, a literally breathtaking altitude. The metre wide track along the crescent shaped lip is steep and seemingly endless. How far you walk is up to you. Just how deep is your desire to ski that fresh snow in the distance? Persevere. The further you go, the better it gets.

Lloyds

Living the Dream

Once you’ve chosen your launch point and readied yourself for the descent, you will realise that, at front and back, your skis are overhanging the path you have just walked. When you look down, you notice that the bowl is so steep that you can’t actually see the stuff you are about to launch yourself into. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to jump off the edge of the earth, this must come close. But don’t panic, the bowl’s bark is worse than its bite and once you are over the initial shock of the take off, you are treated to superb, creamy powder, untouched by all but a few. It’s graded as a double diamond (a challenging black run in European terms) but that’s largely a mark of respect for the nerve it takes to get there and launch yourself into the abyss. Once you’re in, you can relax and enjoy yourself to the sound of distant ‘yips’ of delight from your fellow adventurers. Whatever you want from your skiing holiday can be found in Aspen, with loads to do, both on and off the mountains. It is famously glamorous, but exudes such a friendly atmosphere that you instantly feel at home. The customer-care ethic running through the resort ensures everything is in place to give you the time of your life. Above all, the skiing is sublime. You can ski some of the best terrain in the world and, if you’re lucky, you’ll have it all to yourself. Only a few places can claim to equal Aspen, but I’m not sure anywhere can beat it. In short, it’s awesome (as the Americans say).

S

EPIA IMAGES of nannies in the park pushing smartly turned-out children in even smarter prams may no longer be a thing of the past if the current taste for vintage baby clothing is

anything to go by. Since the 13th century, people have been wearing smocked clothing, but it is the fond memories of little girls’ dresses that has brought about a revival of smocking in new designs with a taste of nostalgia. Smocking has its roots far from the cute baby clothes of childhood. Originally, smocked shirts were worn by rural workers, and quite often depicted their occupation by the type of stitch, with the colour of the shirt indicating which part of the country someone was from. The smocks would be worn over their outer clothing and were generally made out of linen, and waterproofed with linseed oil. By the late 1800s, smocked clothing took on a whole new look brought about by Liberty’s. They introduced silk gowns that bore no resemblance to the fashion of the day, and the look was completely re-born. At that time, as was the vogue, children’s clothes were mini versions of the adult versions, but when the style went out of favour with grown-ups, it remained popular with babies and toddlers. With a taste of nostalgia in the air, this highly skilled stiching is making a comeback with quality fabrics and classic designs at the forefront. You can have not only dresses smocked, but pyjamas, detailing on collars and pockets, babies’ bedding on the sheets and pillowcases. Christening gowns are also a favourite for the traditional smocking across the front as well as boys’ rompers with beautiful detailing of boats and trains. Sometimes they are even smocked on the front and back giving an even more precious look. To complement this bygone look, the Silver Cross pram is making a comeback. Almost everybody has a memory of the Silver Cross, but then that is hardly surprising as the company has been around since 1877. These beautiful carriage prams have been used by the Royals and more recently by famous celebrities including Helena BonhamCarter, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. With recent reports advising that it is better to have your baby facing you when out and about, the Silver Cross is the perfect height and design. The family-run business still makes these exclusive prams the same way as they have done for more than 50 years. The beautiful hand-crafted Balmoral, with its spoked wheels and leather straps gives amazing suspension, and the Kensington, designed with a fold-down chassis and removable wheels for easy transportation is also fully sprung. This truly is the Rolls Royce of baby travel. All stock available at Twinkle of Westbourne.

Anything salady, any crustacean, all Asian food and sushi, goats’ cheese, prawns on a barbie, whatever – bring it on because this wine is epic. It is also very, very well priced.

Starters and nibbles – Red 2006 South Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, Elgin, South Africa, £13.95 per bottle (£167.40 per case) We very rarely recommend Cape Cabernets, preferring to shop in Bordeaux and Australia, but this wine is a head-turner. This terrific red wine will appeal to those of you who enjoy medium-weight, fragrant, wellpriced reds. It is cool climate, supple and Bordeaux-shaped, but with a much earlier drinking curve than you could ever imagine. The breezy, chilly nights in Elgin make this wine so controlled and refreshing it is a joy to behold. With cassis notes and a bright leafiness lifting the aroma, just half an hour in a decanter make this the everyday Cabernet of the moment. You will love this wine!

TOO BUTCH FOR BALLET, AND TOO LYRICAL FOR JAZZ, WHERE DOES CONTEMPORARY DANCE STAND IN THE ARTISTIC SPECTRUM? COULD IT IN FACT BE THE BRIDGE THAT ENTICES DANCE-PHOBES OVER TO THE LIGHT SIDE? WE SPEAK TO AWARD-WINNING DANCER JONATHAN GODDARD.

For the long answer, turn to Jonathan Goddard - award-winning soloist for the renowned Richard Alston dance company, and contemporary teacher at ‘The Place’ in London.

With contemporary dance coming out of the shadows and being given a wider audience, now is a good time to find out, from the horse’s mouth, what there is to love and loathe about this unique art. When asked to describe contemporary to someone who’s never seen it before, Jonathan’s initial answer is: “Ballet dancing without shoes.” But that is to downplay

involved. Most of us don’t know a thing about ballroom dancing, but we’ve all screamed at the judges and cheered along with the TV show. Watching the journey of the rookie dancers gives some idea of what’s involved. To reach the top of this demanding and competitive profession is just like being successful in any field – talent is not enough: it takes strength, determination, thick skin and ambition. When we met Jonathan he was rehearsing a new piece called ‘Shuffle it Right’ to the music of Hoagy Carmichael – a piece choreographed by Richard Alston. The first surprise was the upbeat and infectious music, which is ideal for his loose, rhythmic style of dance, and evidence of the much broader appeal that contemporary dance now has. Having been with the RADC for almost seven years, Jonathan has had the opportunity to Photo: © Pari Naderi

work closely with the choreographer whose dances are always a pure response to music. The dancers who he’s working with influence the choreography, and unlike many others who create moves on their own bodies for dancers to replicate, Alston plays to a dancer’s strengths and pushes them forward: tests them. He is rare in that he makes material for the dancer, and it is a testament to Jonathan’s talents that he is given about 100 steps a minute, made harder by twisting and turning shapes. This approach to choreography is unusual and gratifying for a dancer. In the current piece there are 10 dancers, all soloists in their own right who are able to come together, almost like a corps de ballet. These moments of unity serve to make this dance style more accessible, and although they are easy on the eye, the dancers work hardest to make those uniform patterns. Jonathan’s bruised and battered feet are a testament to the hard work involved in looking so graceful. The physical strength involved in being able to jump to almost your own height whilst

UESS is a company known for innovative style and up-tothe-minute fashion trends, and this season is no different. Now a global presence, Guess got its start with a great pair of jeans.

In the early 1980s denim was dated and lacked a fashion edge. The

French Marciano brothers saw this as an opportunity to combine their

European style with a traditional American fabric. Through their ingenious designs, they changed the perception of denim forever by creating a line that was sensuous, innovative and timeless. Their famous three-zip Marilyn jean was so sexy and fresh that within hours the entire stock sold out at Bloomingdales. The Guess label was born. Now one of the world’s leading brand names, Guess continues to push fashion forward throughout the world. Each garment and accessory in the Guess collection reflects the unique aesthetic that is the core of their design philosophy. With a distinct style created by its first pair of jeans sewn more than two decades ago, Guess continues to be an innovator of fashion for the young, daring, and sexy. By contrast, the Peter Werth brand reflects the clean lines and classic styling of the 1970s. Voted FHM brand of the year in 2002, this British label has it roots in music and fashion defined in their carefully used icon of a ‘Rockerman’, which illustrates the brand’s identity. Peter Werth has consistently produced commercial, wearable and affordable fashion since the early 70s. All items featured are available at Baks of Westbourne, with two floors of men’s and ladies’ fashion, and top quality brands and labels to choose from. Salle du Vin THINK QUINTESSENTIAL BRITISH STYLE: ELEGANT AND UNPRETENTIOUS. COMBINE THIS WITH GREAT SPIRIT, WIT, AN UNQUESTIONABLE DEVOTION TO WINE, AND YOU HAVE CAPTURED THE ESSENCE OF HOTEL DU VIN.

S

ET IN THE HEART OF WINCHESTER the historic capital of ancient Wessex. The original Hotel du Vin is a unique luxury boutique hotel, housed in the fine architecture of one of central Winchester’s most important Georgian buildings, which dates back to 1715.

It is the group’s smallest hotel, and boasts 24 exquisite bedrooms and suites all

complemented by luxurious Egyptian linen and unique décor. The hotel has an intimate ambience emphasised by the warmth of the Hotel du Vin Bistro and Champagne Bar and pretty walled garden. The cosy Champagne bar is ideal for a pre-dinner drink or glass of champagne, and their extensive and eclectic wine list is a key feature of the hotel, including an impressive array by the glass. The bistro provides a tantalizing menu of ’simple classics’ that change seasonally, with head chef, Marcela Morales, adding her own selections daily. As you would expect, the extensive and eclectic wine list is a key feature of the hotel. In addition to the main list, there is a small daily selection of good value wines to complement the menu. Head sommelier, Yohann Jousselin, and his team are always on hand to give friendly, knowledgeable advice to help make the most of your selection and enhance enjoyment of your meal.

Thanks to the dedication of the design team, the building is now a seamless mix of old and new which has been sympathetically decorated to accommodate all tastes. For special occasions, the executive suite ‘Dom Pérignon’ has an enormous 8x8 foot bed, two roll-top baths and a private terrace. Of course, a hotel is not just about the rooms themselves: the overall ambience is vital to a pleasant stay. The architects and designers have gone out of their way to create a décor that complements the history of the building, whilst incorporating the more modern elements in a sympathetic way. From the humour and style of the murals in the entrance and Reception, to the warmth and intimacy of the Crow’s Nest, the emphasis is on the comfort and amusement of the guests. Leading off from the Crow’s Nest is the large, bright flagstoned bar, which opens out into the Bistro. The two areas flow naturally into each other, whilst maintaining their own identity. GOLF AMID THE DESERT DUNES 2009 will see Tiger Woods’ first course design

WITHOUT QUESTION THE FASTEST GROWING GOLF DESTINATION IN THE WORLD, THE STAGGERING GROWTH OF DUBAI IS TAKING ANOTHER LEAP FORWARD AT JUMEIRAH GOLF ESTATES. ROBIN BARWICK REPORTS…

T

O THE NORTH AND WEST OF DUBAI lies the glittering Persian Gulf, and to the south and east lies the barren expanse of the Rub ‘Al Khali desert. Temperatures in summer hover around 40 degrees during the day and the annual rainfall averages about 12 centimetres. With

natural sources of fresh water virtually non-existent, the natural conditions in the United Arab Emirates hardly lend themselves to golf – in the traditional sense – but in Dubai, anything is possible. Climate-defying golf courses and opulent hotels continue to transform this once dusty and monotonous terrain beyond recognition, and enormous investment from this oil-rich Emirate has persuaded some of the biggest names in golf to design golf courses here. Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie and South Africa’s Ernie Els are two of the players to have their signatures adorning young Dubai courses, while world number one Tiger Woods will see his first ever course design, Al Ruwaya (meaning ‘Serenity’), open in Dubai late in 2009. While it will cost developers tens of millions of pounds to build a golf resort in this climate, with a household name as designer, the clubhouse, obligatory spa, extra leisure facilities, hotel and holiday homes to go with it, the business model leads to hundreds of millions eventually coming back from green fees, club memberships, room rates and above all, those properties. Setting a new benchmark for residential golf resorts in Dubai right now is Jumeirah Golf Estates, which is being built by international developers Leisurecorp, a company which last year also bought the Turnberry resort in Scotland, stage of the 2009 Open Championship. By 2010, four 18-hole golf courses will have opened at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

“This is the premier golf destination under construction anywhere in the world,”

The first two courses, Earth and Fire, designed by Australian legend Greg Norman

claims David Spencer, chief executive of Leisurecorp’s golf activities. It is certainly

professional golf tournaments outside the United States, is expanding from its current headquarters in Wentworth, Surrey, to establish an International headquarters at Jumeirah Golf Estates, complete with a Centre of Excellence for the use of all Tour members. And that’s just the beginning. The European Tour’s Order of Merit – as its list of prize money winners was previously known – has been re-branded the ‘Race to Dubai’ for the 2009 season, and the Race will culminate in a new tournament, The Dubai World Championship, played on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. This will be the world’s richest golf tournament when it is played for the first time in November 2009, with a prize fund of $10 million, a first prize of $1.66 million, and a limited field of only 60 golfers. The Dubai World Championship has the potential to become the world’s most important and most watched golf event after the game’s fourcornered Holy Grail, the Majors (the US Masters; US Open; Open Championship; US PGA Championship).

Dream Team: Greg Norman and Chris Evert

So the collective golfing elements of Jumeirah Golf Estates are astonishing, but Leisurecorp is doing a pretty good job attracting non-golfers too. For instance, Norman’s wife is setting up a tennis academy with grass, clay and hard courts. It just so happens that Norman’s wife is former Wimbledon Ladies champion Chris Evert. Leisurecorp has also just announced that nestled among the putative luxury villas and apartments surrounding Singh’s Water course will be two restaurants – one Italian and one a barbeque concept – created by our very own Jamie Oliver. A Jamie Oliver delicatessen will also be opening there. With such an array of unique attractions, it won’t come as a surprise to learn that Leisurecorp has so far seen its off-plan property sales fly out the door. All the resort’s early releases have sold out. For the record, the most exclusive community planned for the entire resort is called ‘Fireside by Greg Norman’, in which Norman and Evert are building their Dubai home. This most select of neighbourhoods will comprise 66 properties, each with at least five bedrooms, and with price tags between £4.5 and £7.5 million each. As a little incentive to the super rich looking for a bolt hole

in the Middle East, when each Fireside homeowner walks into the garage of their new property they will find their very own limited edition ‘Greg Norman Collection’ Range Rover Sport: All part of the service in this particular neighbourhood. Luxury wheels aside, Jumeirah Golf Estates represents a hugely significant step for both the European Tour, and for Dubai as a golf destination. With the Race to Dubai, the European Tour is offering the world’s best players a serious alternative to the previously all-powerful US PGA Tour, at a time when the American circuit is feeling the sharp end of the global economic climate, with much of its sponsorship coming from US banks and car manufacturers who are finding themselves in dire straits. In contrast, the European Tour continues to expand and dominate world Tour golf outside North America. For Dubai, Jumeirah Golf Estates confirms Dubai’s intentions to become the world’s leading golf destination outside the United States. In effect, Dubai and the European Tour have become partners in ‘Rest of the World’ golf domination. Norman, Garcia and Dye in discussion
